2016 World Conference Edition

Greetings Everyone! It has been my pleasure to serve as the President of the World Ayrshire Federation for the last four years. And, it is my pleasure to be part of the US Ayrshire Digest special World Conference Issue. We are celebrating the 2016 World Conference that is being hosted by the US Ayrshire Breeders Association with a joint issue that includes the regular features of the Digest along with the World Ayrshire Photo Contest results and country reports from each of our 10 member countries, as well as many international advertisements. We will publish another joint issue next year that will have reviews and reports from the World Conference program. We realize that most of you were not able to join us for the conference, but we hope that this Digest will help you get to know other breeders from around the world. The WAF is devoted to promoting the Ayrshire breed. Each of the member countries appoints delegates to represent them at Federation meetings where different issues are debated and activities are shared. We maintain a website and publish a newsletter that shares interesting activities, issues and events from our member countries. It also allows you to have a little fun each year by participating in the fan judging portion of the World Photo Contest. We recently added a chart, The Ayrshire National Indexes, that breaks down the components and their value in each country’s genetic evaluation system. It may be a big help to you when you are considering using international genetics in your breeding program. We encourage you to visit our website often to keep up with all that is happening in the Ayrshire world. There have been some interesting issues that have come before the board and some that are yet to be resolved, but I am very pleased with the commitment each country and each director has shown to the Federation. I hope each of you appreciates the work they do on your behalf! I have greatly enjoyed my term as president. I need to thank my family for allowing me to take extra time to attend to details and travel for the Federation. They have been very understanding and supportive. I also need to extend my appreciation to the US Ayrshire Association for supporting and funding my travels as well. I have been fortunate to have visited all of our member countries and meet many, many breeders in each country. It has been wonderful to see so many herds and view so many outstanding cattle around the world. Without question the one thing that I have realized is the passion and dedication of our breeders no matter where they are. It is a tribute to the Ayrshire cow and an omen for our future. While each of our member countries has different climates, dairy industries, political structures and laws, and may vary from small to large populations, the one thing that is definitely the same is the love for Ayrshires. I look forward to a great Conference and wish all of our breeders success. Regards, Mary S. Creek World Ayrshire Federation President Palmyra Farm Ayrshires Hagerstown, Maryland, USA

On behalf of the Ayrshire breeders in the U.S., I welcome everyone to the 2016 World Ayrshire Conference. During these weeks you will see many different aspects of the dairy industry as well as some refreshing entertainment. The U.S. includes many different climate zones along with different landscapes. We have conventional farms along with organic farms; cattle raised on pastures and cattle raised in free stalls. We all have the same goal, and that is to treat our cows with care and provide consumers with the best dairy product possible. You will be able to see this first hand as you tour dairy farms. You will see the U.S. genetics in progress. We have outstanding herds that have used the right combination of Ayrshire genetics which produce milk with high components. Here in the U.S. the carbon footprint to produce milk has declined by 63 percent over the last 60 years, and dairy cows contribute only 0.54 percent of total U.S. greenhouse gases. This is a big accomplishment and the industry will continue to decrease this percentage. Milk is priced according to the four classes of milk. Class I is beverage milk; Class II is soft manufactured products; Class III is hard cheese and cream cheese and Class IV is dry milk products and butter. Most Ayrshire milk is in the Class III market and is priced according to three components: butterfat (butter); protein (cheddar cheese) and other solids (dry whey). Our premiums include a quality adjustment (using 350,000 somatic cell count as a base) and quantity (pounds shipped). Most processing plants add a premium for not using hormone injections because of consumer concern. Prices are also adjusted to what region you produce your milk. All 50 states produce milk, but the states are grouped in 12 different regions. It is a complicated system and has been questioned about its fairness. When the conference is over, our goal and desire is to give you a better understanding of the U.S. agriculture business. This way of life is known for sharing knowledge, opening its doors to competitors, hosting farm tours and having answer/question sessions. We share our success stories along with the “not-so-successful endeavors. The largest examples of this will be on full display during the World Dairy Expo where you can see the latest technology and techniques available in the dairy industry. Welcome Ayrshire Family, Our breeders in the USA have worked diligently and given financially so that you will enjoy your visit with us for the World Ayrshire Conference. We all have made many lifelong friends because of the Ayrshire cow, and we hope we will continue to make many more. The world economy and the current condition of the dairy industry has made it difficult for many to attend. We have planned for this with Dairy Agenda Today accompanying us for the entirety of the conference, and you will be able to follow along daily with their reports. Beginning at the Big E, the breeders from the East have worked to ensure that your first two days will be exciting. A big thank you to all those involved. On to the breeders who are hosting farm tours, who are pulling out all the stops for you to see their breeding programs and also serve you some fine American cuisine. A big thank you to all of those breeders. On to Wisconsin Dells, which will be a very relaxing venue, but most importantly the meetings that will enable us to grow as a breed. Finally, World Dairy Expo. There is so much to see and learn at this event. A thank you to the staff at World Dairy Expo for putting on such a first-class event. Thank you to all of the committee members who have worked to make this a great conference for the world to attend. We certainly can’t thank everyone enough for their efforts to make this a successful world conference. We would be remiss if we didn’t thank your World Ayrshire Federation President Mary Creek for all of her efforts. And lastly our US Ayrshire Executive Secretary Becky Payne for her endless work to make all of this happen. Combining the forces of nature -

Blue Spruce Farm

T

By Cheri Oechsle

here is a farm in Vermont just shy of its 60th birthday that offers a unique blend of creative diversity to its farming practices. The Audet family prides itself in the operation it is continuing to develop. “Our renewable energy project is a partnership between the farm, the utility and the community, utilizing an existing waste stream, protecting the environment and providing added value products for both the farm and community,” said the Audets. “Cow Power goes a long way to ensure social, environmental and economic sustainability for the future of our farm. Dairy farming is allconsuming, hard work, and we are fortunate that our fellow Vermonters recognize our contributions to the community, our landscape and our state’s culture by stepping up with creative solutions to help our farms remain viable.” Norman and Mary-Rose Audet purchased the Blue Spruce Farm when they married in 1958. Previously, Norman had worked on his family farm in Orwell, Vermont. Over the next seven years, the Audets produced five children. Together, with this energetic, built-in workforce, Norman and Mary-Rose set off to update and grow the farm. In 1970, they experienced a devastating barn fire. While grateful that the herd of 80 cows was saved, they lost the entire barn and a recently installed pipe line milking system. But this setback didn’t keep “Stormy Normy” (as he was affectionately called in his younger years) from investing in a state-of-the-art free stall barn and milking parlor— which was built to accommodate the short stature of his workers, as the kids were not yet teenagers! The team at Blue Spruce includes the second and now third generations of Audets. Norman and Mary-Rose’s son Eugene is in charge of cows and the herd, along with the next generation of cousins, Nathan and Troy. Eugene’s wife Marie is the farm bookkeeper. His brother Ernie manages the crop division of the business with cousins Tyler and Nicholas. These three also handle the manure management, water quality, and keeping up on all the Vermont regulations for those applications, along with the third brother, Earl who is the man in charge of all things mechanical. Their sister Elaine helps part time and in the summer, and her husband Brian is a contractor that builds barns and houses as needed for the business and family. The third generation’s spouses are also involved in areas of social media and helping as needed.

As the second generation grew older, they had dreams of building a barn focused on the cows’ comfort. Tapping into modern dairy information and technology that had been gained over the years, the first of three new barns was constructed in 1996, with a milking parlor that could handle 48 cows at a time. The herd was gradually increased to 500 milking cows. A second barn was completed in 2001 providing better accommodations for dry cows and springing heifers. A third barn was added for young stock in 2009. The milking herd is now at 1500, along with 1500 young stock, comprised of registered Holsteins and Ayrshires. The barns are open and airy. The cows have free access to fresh feed, clean beds and water. A slow moving scraper that looks like a squeegee on wheels is constantly moving across the soft rubber coated barn floors collecting manure for their digester. They believe the digester allows them to capitalize on the huge feed investments by collecting the leftovers that the cows don’t utilize as part of their natural digestion. Blue Spruce Farm was the first Cow Power farm in Vermont. They built their first digester with the belief in creating a more sustainable operation. In 2000 they began looking for ways to create more bedding for the cattle and reducing the odor of the farm for their neighbors. “We wanted to be better neighbors, and the digester seemed to fit the order,” said Eugene. Marie commented, “This was not something we decided to just do – our desire came from Norman who believed in the need to produce quality milk, be good for environment and good for the community.” The Audets talked with many state people and farmers and Ernie visited some farms with digesters and “saw some failures.” But Eugene and Marie’s son was attending school

in Wisconsin, so on a visit, they took a whole group of people including some from the state, utilities and farmers and visited farms putting in successful DVO digesters and, as they say, the rest is history. Currently, over 30,000 gallons of manure is produced by the Audets’ cows. All the waste from the farm is collected and pumped into a biodigester. The biodigester looks like a concrete in-ground swimming pool with a concrete cover. Using excess heat from the generator, the digester is kept at the same temperature as a cow – simply continuing what was happening in the cows’ stomachs. The 16-foot-deep digester is filled up to 14 feet with manure, allowing the naturally occurring methane gas to collect at the top. That methane gas is used to power generators that push enough electricity onto the grid for about 300+ homes. Throughout each day, the freshest manure pushes the older manure around in the plug-flow digester system. After this 21-day cycle, the manure is pumped out of the digester and goes through a mechanical separator that squeezes the liquid apart from the undigested plant fibers. These plant fibers, having been cooked in the digester at 100 degrees for 21 days, are the consistency of peat moss, and they are used as bedding for the cows – replacing a tractor-trailer load of sawdust each week. This contributes to their carbon reduction simply by keeping a tractortrailer off the road to the farm and by reducing trips to the fields to spread that amount of sawdust with manure-based fertilizer. Because they produce plenty of bedding, they bed liberally, providing additional comfort for the animals. Blue Spruce Farms uses half of these separated plant fibers; the rest is sold to other farms for bedding and to gardeners and landscapers as a nutrient-rich, weed seedfree fertilizer. Every spring they have a supply

of finished compost for sale that is available until they run out, adding another income to the farm’s bottom line. After the bedding fibers are separated, the remaining liquids are stored in the manure pit until they can be used as an improved liquid fertilizer that is applied to the fields with an aerator onto the growing hay crops. This also effectively reduces potential for runoff and reduces the need to purchase commercial, fossil fuel-based fertilizers. The aerator application uses a piece of equipment to poke small holes into the ground, injecting the liquid directly into the soil at the root level. The liquid manure is pumped from the storage area through a hose that can go up to two miles, eliminating hundreds of hours of manure trucks on the road and on fields, further reducing the carbon foot print and reducing soil compaction. Another interesting fringe benefit of their renewable energy project comes from harnessing the excess heat from the methanepowered generator. Excess heat is captured through a heat exchanger, and used to keep the digester at 100 degrees, along with providing hot water to the farm for the daily cleaning of the milking system, and for radiant floor heat in the office and milking parlor in the winter. And because they simply just can’t stand to throw anything away, the used oil from the generator is utilized to run a waste oil furnace that heats the farm equipment repair shop. This entire process, affectionately called “Cow Power,” allows the Audets to be better neighbors by reducing farm odor, reducing the carbon footprint, removing methane emissions from the air, and generating electricity for their fellow Vermonters. With a Cow Power project, there are no fossil fuels consumed to make energy, therefore, the carbon released from the generators is considered global warming neutral. In May 2013, the Audets commissioned a Northern Power community-sized wind turbine to add to their renewable portfolio. “We have developed a good working relationship with the utility because of Cow Power and they were trying to evolve their wind energy portfolio and needed land. We have the land and we believe in renewable energy so we asked our neighbors about adding a turbine and they were all fine with it. We get some

power from it and it increased that portfolio for our business.” As far as they know, they are the only farm in the US that’s producing renewable electricity from Cow Power and from wind power. “People are always asking us ‘why don’t all farmers do this?’ Many of us in the dairy industry believe that any size farm can build a digester, and eventually most will. The barriers are the sizeable initial investments, and locking in a reliable revenue from the power sales. Operating a Cow Power facility also requires new skills, and more labor. But when a community gets together, these challenges can be met,” said the Audets. Eugene offered this piece of advice regarding implementing a digester to your program: “Have a key person who is mechanical. If it was just me,

“Our focus historically has been on efficiency and we’ve done a heck of a job we think. Now we are shifting from cows to the soil. We are making incredible changes on how we grow crops based on the changing climate and water quality. Our focus will be on that.” we probably would not be as successful. You need to have someone on staff or in the family that is mechanical.” Marie added, “It requires a new skill set. But who better than dairy farmers who are always using and learning new skill sets with the constantly-changing industry.” The Audets believe that along with cow comfort is growing the highest quality feed possible to provide their girls with a balanced, nutritious diet. They farm 3000 acres and are transitioning to more no-till for better soil health. The crops are, of course, used to maintain their 1300-cow dairy. The Audets currently have 60 Ayrshires that include 45 in milk with a rolling herd average over 21,000M. In the summer of 2006, they purchased an impressive young

10

heifer, Scapeland BBBK Cream Angel-ET from Cindy and James Crawford of Scapeland Farm. Soon after, they purchased an additional 15 milking cows and 15 yearlings from the Crawfords, creating the foundation for their Ayrshire herd today. Eugene laughed and said, “I call it a mid-life crisis. Instead of a girlfriend or an $80,000 car, I went and bought an Ayrshire heifer. Cindy and I were in 4-H as youngsters and we met up again at the county fair. They had a fancy heifer that I really liked so I bought her. That’s what got us started.” The Audets have shown their Ayrshires at local, state and national levels, resulting in many blue ribbons and All-American nominations. “We have found it is a little less expensive to show the Ayrshires than the Holsteins. It is also difficult to do the show circuit with two breeds so we try to stick to just one,” said Eugene. “We are working hard to make sure they are good sound cattle and milk well. We are starting to merchandize – we just sold some to Iowa and our goal is to someday put some in bull studs. We have IVF’d six cows per year a couple of times each – mostly to get more of these daughters to get pedigrees on the ground, put some in sales and get daughters in the herd. We do have the advantage of lots of recipients available,” said Eugene. As for future goals, Marie stated, “Our focus historically has been on efficiency and we’ve done a heck of a job we think. Now we are shifting from cows to the soil. We are making incredible changes on how we grow crops based on the changing climate and water quality. Our focus will be on that.” Eugene added, “Every good herdsman keeps records and the bulk tank keeps telling the milk balance. As we are shifting to crop efficiency, we are measuring every acre making it as profitable as possible.” Marie jumped back in with, “We are at the age of the middle generation – like we did, the next generation is taking over and the shift to making that happen and keeping all happy will be a major focus as well.” The Audet family has an educational and comprehensive website available at www. bluesprucefarms.com or you can find them on Facebook at Blue Spruce Farm for more information about their cattle or sustainable energy programs.

USA Ayrshires US Ayrshire Highlights… A Year In Review The last year has been marked by successes as U. S. Ayrshire breeders strive to breed and develop cows that exhibit the desired traits of outstanding production, functional type, longevity and low somatic cell counts. The actual lactation average for the breed increased from 2014 to 2015 by 640 pounds of milk, 16 pounds of butterfat and 19 pounds of protein with an actual breed production average of 17,894M (8,117 kg). The Mature Equivalent (ME) average per cow is 19,191M (8,705 kg). The production winners and Elite Cow Performance Index (CPI) cows show the adaptability of the Ayrshire cow in the variety of climates and management systems used in the U.S. U. S. Sires Bulls on the Active AI list provide breeders with options in their breeding programs to focus on areas for improvement in production, type or health traits with 18 to 20 bulls listed. Anmar Passeli Passion-ET has topped with the list in the past year with PTAs of over 2,000 pounds of milk. A strong group of young sires also provide the opportunity to use the genetics from the top sires and outstanding maternal lines. Elite CPI Cows In the United States, Ayrshire cows are ranked by Cow Performance Index (CPI) three time a year (April, August and December) with the genetic evaluations calculated by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB). The CPI formula is based on six traits with the following emphasis: 25% butterfat, 25% type, 6% daughter pregnancy rate (DPR), 5% udder depth and 4% somatic cell. A list of the top cows is published. Cows must be documented 87% Ayrshire or higher to qualify for the list. The August 2016 Elite CPI list featured five

Australia Ayrshires Australian Ayrshires

Submitted by Mike Hentschke, Australian Ayrshire Cattle Society As Ayrshire enthusiasts gather in the United States for the 2016 World Conference, it reflects the worldwide interest in this breed of dairy cattle. Ayrshires have had a place in Australia since colonisation in 1788, and the Ayrshire Cattle Society was formed in 1891. This was commemorated with a tour of Australia in 1991 for the Centenary show at Shepparton in Victoria. In 2015, Australian Ayrshires was formed with the amalgamation of the two bodies responsible for the promotion of Ayrshires in our country. This has been wellreceived by our membership and generated considerable momentum for our breed in our country. Australia is a large country with a most diverse range of climates, yet Ayrshires are found in almost all dairy regions in our country, ranging from the sub-tropical climate in Queensland in the North to the cold, temperate climate in Tasmania to the South. Most cattle are found in the coastal regions of the country or in irrigation areas, as water availability is critical in the driest continent in the world. However, one can always be assured of a warm welcome from Australian members and we are proud of the quality of animals in our country. There are studs that have been breeding Ayrshires for more than 100 years, with our oldest member Roly Canobie celebrating his 100th birthday in March this year. While it is exciting to have history, the number of young breeders associated with Ayrshires across the country is a positive sign for our breed. They regularly feature in the finals of all dairy youth competitions across the country. Many of these have established their own Ayrshire studs, which is a strong sign for our future. While Ayrshires are one of the minor breeds in Australia based on herd numbers, our members are renowned for their promotion of the breed on the show circuit. In some cases, we are the breed with the largest number of entries at major shows. Each January we meet at Tatura for International Dairy Week, which is Australia’s largest dairy cattle show. Breeders travel from all parts of the country

to participate in this event, with 130 head of Ayrshires being presented for judging. An elite sale is held here and we also have a successful show and sale at Camperdown, which is the longest-running multi-vendor sale in the country. International visitors always comment positively on the quality of

animals presented at our shows. Results from the World Photo Competition indicate that our animals are competitive on the world stage, and reflect the breeding goals of our members to breed quality, productive animals. Breeders utilise genetics from across the world in their breeding with a high proportion of semen used being imported from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. A major change in recent times has been the importation of embryos which has allowed breeders to introduce new cow families to our genetics, and the full impact of this technology is still to be seen as we wait for these new cow families to develop. Currently we are experiencing difficulty fully utilizing technology as genomic testing is not currently available for Ayrshires in Australia. As we have a small number of Ayrshires in our country, we will need to link with other countries to be able to access this information for our cattle. Current milk prices are a concern for Australian dairy farmers as the cost of production is above income in many areas, and this will provide challenges for our breeders, but hopefully the efficiency and hardy nature of the Ayrshire cow will help our members through this time. On behalf of all Australian members, we wish you a successful conference tour which fosters the global fellowship of Ayrshire breeders.

World Conference 2020

Submitted by Mike Hentschke, Australian Ayrshire Australian Ayrshire members look to invite Ayrshire enthusiasts from across the world to visit us in January 2020 for the next World Conference. We look to the opportunity to showcase our cattle to the world and extend Australian hospitality from our members. Our members have chosen to hold the tour in January to coincide with International Dairy Week, which is the largest showcase of dairy cattle in our country. This has been the major show for Ayrshires and brings the best animals from across the country into one show ring. Members felt this show would provide the best opportunity to present our animals to international visitors. The tour would commence in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Adelaide is located close to the world-renowned Barossa Valley and Southern Vales wine districts. The majority of Ayrshires in this state are located within an hour of the city, allowing easy access for visits. Travel to Victoria will include the historic Blue Lake of Mount Gambier viewed from the edge of an extinct volcano before hugging the coastline along the Great Ocean Road. Visits will include the historic gold mining areas at Ballarat where you can try your hand at finding gold at Sovereign Hill. Victoria will be the location of International Dairy Week at Tatura which will be followed by a tour to Australia’s capital city Canberra, and then to Sydney. The Harbour Bridge and the Opera House are significant attractions in this city, the largest in Australia. A short distance from Sydney is Camden, which was the home of many well-known Australian Ayrshire studs. Organisers of the tour will try to give visitors the opportunity to visit Queensland and the Gold Coast to conclude their tour. Following our tour, it may be possible for visitors to continue to New Zealand for their Dairy Expo, a major all-breeds dairy cattle show. Visitors will be able to visit Ayrshire herds along the tour as we pass through the major dairy areas in Australia and also access many of the coastal tourist attractions along the way. We look forward to facilitating Ayrshire fellowship to members from across the globe.

Finland Ayrshires International Ayrshire Show

Submitted by Mirja Koljonen, Chairwoman of the Finnish Ayrshire Breeders Society The Finnish Ayrshire Breeders Society organized the International Ayrshire Show 2008 during the World Ayrshire Conference in Finland. With over 120 entries, it was the biggest breed display for decades. After this success and the experience to organize a show event indoors, the Society decided to develop this idea further. As a joint enterprise with Sarka Expo, the first Ayrshire Winter Show took place in January 2010. Mrs. Mary Creek from the United States judged Ayrshire classes with over 100 animals and Mr. Duncan Hunter from the United Kingdom was in charge of the showmanship classes. Thanks to the enthusiastic and committed group of member breeders, the Society has been able to raise its standards and offer breeders and public a memorable show each year. To improve the publicity of the breed, the show is livestreamed via internet and video recorded is available to everybody at the Society website. Junior and Youth activities are nowadays a significant part of the Winter Show. Almost every year, the Winter Show has hosted international youth events, such as the Scandinavian Red Showmanship 2014 and the World Federation Youth Tour in 2015. The Sale of Stars auction with quality Ayrshires has proven to be an important part of the event as it gives a good price level for consignments and widely interests the public. The next Ayrshire Winter Show will take place in January 26th -28th in 2017 at Seinäjoki Arena. The program will include a International Ayrshire Seminar, the National Ayrshire Show, a Scandinavian Youth Event

and the Sale of Stars. We are ready to organize herd visits for the international visitors. Welcome to Finland!

Finnish Ayrshires

Submitted by Minna Kotila, board member of the Finnish Ayrshire Breeders Society The Finnish Ayrshire Breeders was established in September 2000 to advance the Ayrshire breeding in Finland and to promote the Ayrshire cow. In 2003, the Finnish Ayrshire Breeders were accepted as a member of the World Ayrshire Federation and the international cooperation is very important to our association. There are nine members in the board of Finnish Ayrshire Breeders. Board members in 2016 are: Mirja Koljonen (chairwoman), Vilma Pohjola, Minna Kotila, Saija Räikkonen, Kristiina Iivarinen, Heli Teiskonlahti, Juha Rinkinen, Sanna Rintala and Hannakaisa Heikkinen. Ayrshire in Finland There have been Ayrshire cows in Finland since 1845. For many decades already the Ayrshire breed has been the most important dairy breed in Finland. There are about 8,450 dairy farms in Finland which have about 286,000 dairy cows in total, and 55 per cent of them are Ayrshires. So there are about 157,000 Ayrshire cows in Finland today. Average 305 days production for Ayrshire cows in Finland is 8,750 kilos of milk [19,290 pounds] with 3.55 % protein and 4.41 % fat. Ayrshire Finland Classification Ayrshire Finland Classification (AFClass) was started 12 years ago in 2004. Yves Charpentier from Ayrshire Canada is doing the classification by using the Canadian system and over 10,000 Ayrshire cows have been classified at least one time during the years. This is the most important member service of Finnish Ayrshire Breeders. AF-classification helps the breeders to do the mating decisions

20

and to develop the Ayrshire breed in Finland. In July 2016 Yves Charpentier classified 572 Ayrshire cows in Finland of which one was Excellent, 3.84 % Very Good and 42.3 % Good Plus. Best Ayrshire Herd The Finnish Ayrshire Breeders organises the Ayrshire Winter Show (pictured below) in Seinäjoki and in that event also the Best Ayrshire Herd competition awards are given. Best Ayrshire Herd is the herd that has had highest percentage of All Star cows compared to the total number of cows in that herd during each year. An All Star cow is an Ayrshire cow

that is classified Good Plus or better and has milked more than 9500 kilos [20,944 pounds] in 305 days. Best Ayrshire Herd 2015 was Joukolan Ayrshire owned by Laura and Jouko Laiholahti. Joukolan Ayrshires Submitted by Nina Nieminen Joukolan Ayrshires, Laura and Jouko Laiholahti and their family, is the 2015 Best Ayrshire Herd in Finland. Joukolan Ayrshire herd is also a living show-window for the breed due to successful appearances at exhibitions, fantastic home sites, several animals sold for breeding, open house days and for being an object for farm visits. Laura

is one of the people that founded the Finnish Ayrshire Breeders and she belonged to the board for 10 years, nine of them as secretary. Jouko Laiholahti started his path as a farmer in 1989 with seven cows. Very soon after Laura joined him, they started focusing on breeding and increased the number of cows. In 2002 a new free stall was built, but it was destroyed in a fire during Easter 2009. Luckily all the animals were saved and a new, improved free stall was built in 2009. The new stalls have curtain windows and a sloped straw bed, forage feeding and kiosks, a 2x8 herringbone parlour and room for 70-80 cows. Laura, as one of the founders of the Finnish Ayrshire Breeders, remembers it like this: “The World Ayrshire Conference in the United Kingdom in the year 2000 was very important to Finland. It gave the participants Mirja Koljonen, Sari Alhainen and AnnaMaija Pohjola a very clear vision that Finland needed an Ayrshire breed association of its own. They all, individually, gathered interested breeders together to a meeting, and the Finnish Ayrshire Breeders association was founded in September 2000.” Laura was selected secretary of the association and says that through that she got a good view into the Ayrshire world. The most important thing, according to Laura, is that as a member of the association she has been able to work for the breed. “The association isn’t there for me; I am there for the association.” According to Laura, the Finnish Ayrshire Breeders are so important to the breed that without them the breed would be in great trouble, and that’s why she appreciates all the breeders who voluntarily work for the association. When it comes to her own herd, Laura has a clear goal. The realization of the breeding is seen in the herd. The animals born have to be productive and work well in the cow barn. It isn’t enough that they are good on paper. Even if you perhaps never get the perfect cow, the breeder has to know where they are going and hold on to the goals; old ways can be forgotten. At Joukola the breeding was totally changed 10 years ago when they started to use Canadian sires. If you want a herd that is equal in exterior and production, you can’t go on changing the goals. If you use a bit of everything, you get a bit of everything, and in the end there aren’t many who want such a division in their herd. Even if the different results and reports are important, the breeder, who wants to be successful, has to know the breed, the families and the different animals, and you have to watch and watch the animals again and again, because only by watching you can learn. When you know your animals and see what kind of progeny the sires leave, you can learn to choose the right mate for your cow. When Laura, due to many commissions, has been away from home, the support and work contribution from her family have been 2016 World Conference Edition

crucial. Laura is happy that the whole family values the Ayrshire Breed and that no one has tried to limit her actions, as they have been considered important for the breed. Of the children in the family, Lilli is the one who has been most involved in the practical work with the cows, in the work with the exhibitions and in all the other activities concerning the cows. Laura is content that there is one other person in the family who is totally absorbed by Ayrshire Breeding. With Lilli there have been many a good conversations about the cows in the herd, pondering about which cows to take to the exhibition and discussing small details in the cows’ exteriors. Finally, Laura is delighted about the Ayrshire world which is

Increased focus on embryos in Finland and Sweden

Submitted by Johanna Aro, Coordinator – VG heifer and embryo program, VikingGenetics VikingGenetics (VG) has embryo production centers in Sweden, Denmark and Finland. During the last couple of years, there has been more emphasis on ET (Embryo Transfer) due to high genetic capacity among the females. VG buys top heifers and owns facilities for embryo production. They also make flushing contracts with farmers. Breeders in VG countries are very eager to genomic test young calves, which is good starting point for searching right candidates for breeding program. Quality embryos VG produce embryos by flushing and OPU (Ovum Pick Up) method. Co-operating with research has been important to reach good level in OPU production - focus on embryo quality and freezing. However, many of the embryos are implanted as fresh to recipients to shorten the generation interval as much as possible, and Viking has entered contracts with specific herds to take the fresh embryos. VG has worked together with Faba to construct the recipient embryo network. VG has put effort also to the overnight embryo transport.

around, and farmers receive profit by getting back good embryos and using the newest genetics. In heifer purchasing, focus is on high NTM, meaning long-lasting cows with high production, good health, good fertility and good conformation. One good example is the Ayrshire heifer Asmo Matami, gNTM +25 (VR Erkki x Pellpers). The first donor cow from this cow family was Tabor Sally from Sweden. The bull Asmo Andrei comes from this family and we can celebrate that his dam now has produced 100,000 kilos [220,462 pounds] of milk! At the moment we are

a profitable cow; that means high production, good health and functional conformation. VikingGenetics is unique when it comes to health traits, and that is what we believe in and have the power to work with because of our high partici-pation from the farmers in Denmark, Sweden and Finland in milk recording. ASMO Sale ET was one of the first Ayrshire bulls from the ET program who was used worldwide; since then it has been, for example, Siirakki, Tosikko, Taara, Ullimulli and Vauhti. Ullimulli was the bull who in-fluenced a lot to the later generations, leaving many sons to the breeding program. Among the others, VR Uudin ET, one of the Ullimulli’s sons, is a heavily used proven bull. In Finland, the nucleus herd is soon to celebrate their 20-year anniversary. has been fruitful to discuss Ayrshire breed with breeders all over the world. Thank you and you are welcome to visit! VikingRed – the strongest red breeding program in the world Submitted by Pirkko Taurén, Faba Since 2009 Finland (Finnish Ayrshire), Sweden (Swedish Red) and Denmark (Danish Red) have had a common Red breeding program. These three countries have had lot in common among cattle breeding for many years. They all are pioneers of collecting health recording data since the 1980s. Finland, Sweden and Denmark also have a common system to evaluate breeding values. This is done by NAV (Nordic Cattle Genetic Evaluation). VikingRed is the world-leading red breeding population. Canada Ayrshires The Canadian Ayrshire Breed: Resolutely Focused on Improving Its Performances By: Michel Boudreault, Ayrshire Canada More than 20 years ago, the Canadian Ayrshire breed adopted a well-structured and focused genetic program. Under the leadership of Ayrshire Canada’s Breed Improvement Committee, breeders agreed upon specific objectives and enabled the implementation of the means to not only achieve them but also stay the course. At that time, we were facing a lack of genetic diversity and a level of production that was restricting our competitiveness. We did, however, have excellent conformation and health. Health is an important part of profitability, but it hasn’t always been fully recognized here in Canada. So we met with all A.I. centres present in Canada and provided Ayrshire genetics to explain our objectives. We can indeed rely

on their excellent cooperation. Semex, which is owned by Canadian breeders, is our main genetic supplier. We contributed to the development of genetic tools that allow breeders to better understand the impact of genetics on performances. One of these tools is readily available to all Canadian breeders and makes it possible to compare, for each herd, the genetic potential (genotype) of females and their performances at the farm (phenotype). This tool enables us to show and raise greater awareness of the importance of better selecting females. The table below outlines comparative performance results for production at 305 days and conformation for the breed’s highest 10% (90th percentile) vs. the breed’s lowest

10%, for a selection based on LPI and cows in first lactation. The breed’s best sires are available to all. The best possible genetic gain to improve herd performances is accomplished by selecting the best females of each herd. Imagine the incredible improvement we could achieve if every Ayrshire herd in the country didn’t breed their herd’s lowest 10% anymore… The breeders’ acceptance and better understanding of the breed’s objectives and genetic tools now allow us to see results on the farms. Our genetic gain in Fat and Protein Yield has been, for the last three years, the best across all Canadian breeds. Our global conformation level has increased, to the great benefit of our Feet & Legs. And our SCC is the lowest among all dairy breeds in Canada, which enables us to focus on fertility. Below are last year’s results of Base Changes calculated by Canadian Dairy Network:

Genomics now constitute a key tool

The arrival of genomics enabled breeders to better select genetics – male and female - intended for the AI industry. Our breeders quickly adopted it and, today, it is commonly used to select females in the herds. In this regard, the Ayrshire breed displays the highest percentage of genotyped females across all Canadian dairy breeds. While its reliability is not as precise as for other major Canadian breeds, it has been beneficial to improve the accuracy of the young sires’ genetic evaluations. The use of young Ayrshire sires has followed the same trend as other breeds and has been increasing since the arrival of genomics, despite an impressive list of proven sires. Both the improvement of our production yield and the upholding of our excellent conformation probably have contributed to maintaining our number of registration entries over the last four years. We could sit idly by as herds leave the industry, but rather I bet on our good work by multiplying our efforts as well as the number of good Ayrshires among new herds. The growth of mixed herds also seems to be gaining in importance and this represents an excellent business opportunity for our Association. We are confident that our breed will gain in popularity with the means implemented. Our cows are indeed more profitable and ready to face tomorrow’s market.

New Genetic Reference Tool

The World Ayrshire Federation recently published “Three Components in Ayrshire National Indexes Relative Emphasis,” a genetic reference tool. This tool allows us to compare the composition of the main selection index for each country member of the World Ayrshire Federation and countries where Ayrshires can be found and genetic evaluations are calculated. It summarizes in percentages the importance given to each of the three main components for every national index.

Despite their different names, these indexes all share a common objective: to enable the ranking and identification of the best “overall performing” animals of a country. Criteria entered into this calculation should thus take into account the needs of the industry, the genetic reality, the breed’s performance, and, finally, improvement goals. Although this tool is useful to know which animals are the best in any given country, we must make sure to know each index’s composition in order to use it successfully. Take, for example, the following three countries: Canada, United-States, and New Zealand. They have similar emphases for the “Production/Efficiency” component: 51%, 60%, and 52.2%, respectively. Yet, we can notice a difference in the importance given to each individual element composing their “Production” components. For example, in New Zealand, 12.3% of the

2016 World Conference Edition

total index is dedicated to Milk yield, while in America Fat yield and Protein yield have more influence. Looking at “Longevity/Type/Body”, Sweden and Finland attribute 12.4% to the Mammary system, among the highest percentages across all countries. Therefore, it could be assumed that they wish to improve their cow udders. The classification criteria for a good udder probably differ in these 2 countries; we would actually have to dig deeper to know the exact composition of their respective classification sheets and which criteria they assess.

As for the “Functional” component, all countries agree on the importance of Daughters’ fertility, applying to it percentages varying between 6%, for the United States, and 20.7%, for England. The other point gathering unanimous support is mastitisrelated traits, namely Somatic Cell Score and Clinical Mastitis. In order to gain a better understanding and better compare animals across all countries, an adequate tool would be MACE (Multi-Trait Across Country Evaluations) evaluations. This methodology collects the data of one animal in his country of origin and produces new genetic evaluation data based on your own country’s criteria. The newly calculated evaluation then reflects the domestic genetic expectations of your own country. It is obviously not as precise as a domestic evaluation, as its accuracy may be influenced, among other things, by the quality of the data collection. In some cases, indexes will not be published if their reliability doesn’t meet a country’s minimum standards.

New Zealand Ayrshires Dairy Farming in New Zealand Traditionally, New Zealand’s temperate climate lends itself to a pasture-based grazing system. A pasture production profile that allows farm system to operate with relatively low input means that New Zealand farmers have relied on grazed pasture to feed their cows although over the past few years it has become more common to feed additional supplement. Most cows calve in a short period at the end of winter, with peak lactation during the period of high pasture production in spring. The index system in New Zealand is Breeding Worth (BW), which is used to rank bulls and cows on their expected ability to breed replacements that are efficient converters of feed into profit (for more information see www.dairynz.co.nz/animal/ animal-evaluation/interpreting-the-info/). The New Zealand dairy industry encourages higher rates of genetic gain for protein and fat than liveweight and volume. In the 2014-15 season the average herd size in New Zealand was 419 cows with an average yield of 377 kilograms [831 pounds] milk solids per cow. With over 11,900 herds nationwide, over 600 herds milk over 1,000 cows each. Ayrshire New Zealand Founded in 1909, the first Herd Book (a record of all registered pedigree Ayrshires by year) was published in 1910 and the first magazine in 1937. In 2016 we celebrate the 100th issue of the Herd Book. The first Ayrshire bull “Rob Roy” arrived in New Zealand in 1848 on the immigrant ship “Philip Lainge” in Glasgow, arriving in Otago carrying the main body of the first Scottish settlers to New Zealand and founding the settlement of Dunedin. The first cow arrived

the following year. Ayrshires now make up 0.6% of the national dairy herd in New Zealand, from a total population of 5.1 million herd tested cows. Cross breeds make up 45% of the national herd, followed by Holstein-Friesian at 35% and Jerseys at 11%. With a registered Ayrshire pedigree population of almost 18,000 females including young stock, over 13,600 cows were herd tested in the 14-15 season. Within this framework, Ayrshire New Zealand registers 5,700 animals per annum on a five-year rolling average, and classifies 3,500 cows per annum. Ayrshire New Zealand membership currently stands at approximately 375 members, and 43% of those members actively register stock. Ayrshire New Zealand is governed by a Board of eight Directors, elected on a geographical basis, and led by President Donald Green. Donald and his wife Anne farm over 1100 cows at Leeston, Canterbury, in partnership with their sons Chris and Tim (see story). Donald has been particularly active in the youth area during his time on the Board, chairing the Youth Committee for a number of years and implementing a number of new youth initiatives. In 2013, Ayrshire New Zealand took on the contract administration for the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association, and both Associations were administered by sole charge manager Pam Goodin. In early 2015 Pam took a management role with Jersey New Zealand, and subsequently Ayrshire New Zealand and Jersey New Zealand entered into a Memorandum of Understanding, where Jersey New Zealand now undertakes all administration for both Ayrshire New Zealand

and the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association. Each Association remains a separate entity with their own Board and finances, Annual Conference, website, magazines, publications and Facebook page, but all activities are administered by Pam and her team. This allows for greater synergy across the Associations and efficiencies for members. Ayrshire Youth Ayrshire New Zealand has developed a number of youth initiatives over recent years, which have seen the participation of youth members in Association activities increase. As an Association, we encourage participation in all youth activities from the children, employees and show helpers of existing members up to the age of 20 before they must join the Association. We maintain a database of youth (both members and non-members) who receive all youth-related notifications. In the show ring, Ayrshire New Zealand operates three competitions for our youth participants. The Arran Trophy is presented to the winner of the Ayrshire Young Judge competition at the NZ Dairy Event annually. The first and second placegetters of that competition go on to represent the breed in the World Wide Sires All Breeds Young Judge Competition, with Ayrshire representatives winning this competition for the past three years – Michael Gilbert in 2014 and Kylee Perrett in 2015 and 2016. Kylee has also won the Arran Trophy a record four times. The Fredrickson and Greenlane Trophies are for senior (13-25) and junior (5-12) young handler classes, respectively. Both trophies are competed for twice in each season – at the North Island and South Island Championships. The Ayrshire Youth Achiever Competition is a points-based competition for all youth up to 25 years of age, split into three age classes. Entrants gain points based on show, breed and farm based activities relating to their age group. This competition is also keenly contested. The Ayrshire Seminar has been a particular success in more recent years. Moving to a different area each year, this three- or fourday seminar is for those 18 and over actively involved on farm. It involves a mixture of commercial and pedigree workshops along with some great social bonding. Ayrshire New Zealand also provides subsidies to youth members with opportunities to travel overseas. Most recently, Amy White visited Sweden in 2015. For this World

Conference, Imogen Steiner, Brookview Ayrshires, Tokoroa, has been selected to attend as the Ayrshire New Zealand Youth Ambassador with our assistance.

Hannah Lawson

In October 2016, youth member Hannah Lawson will travel to Hobart, Tasmania (Australia) where she will represent New Zealand at the Royal Show handler competition, against the winner of each Australian state. Hannah gained this honour by representing her District at the New Zealand Royal Show, and winning the RAS National Dairy Young Handler Competition. Annual Conference 2016 Hosted by the Bay of Plenty Ayrshire Club and held in the tourist mecca of Rotorua in early June 2016, the Awards night was memorable for the awards presented to our younger members. The Kiteroa Trophy for the member who contributed the most to the Ayrshire breed was presented to Kylee Perrett, Sentinal Ayrshires, Stratford (see story) and the Bell Booth Achiever Awards were presented to Hannah Lawson, Kylee Perrett, winner of the Starshine Ayrshires, Kiteroa Trophy Woodville, and Alicia McPike, Montrose Ayrshires, Waiuku. The inaugural Rob McIntosh Memorial Trophy for show encouragement was presented to Robyn Gordon of Inglewood. Distinguished Member awards were presented to Diarmid Somerville, Mayo Ayrshires, Reporoa and Graeme Leech, Aotearoa Ayrshires, Tirau. Ayrshire New Zealand was thrilled to host World Federation President Mary Creek at our Conference. Mary took part in all activities, attended part of the Board meeting and addressed the delegates at the Annual General Meeting. Semayr Breeding Services Semayr Breeding Services is the marketing division of Ayrshire New Zealand. Established in 1987, Semayr increased their Progeny Testing in 1998 when Ayrshire progeny testing was dropped by LIC. Between 1998 and 2010, an average of 25 young bulls were 2016 World Conference Edition

progeny tested by Semayr Breeding Services annually. That has now dropped to around 12-15 bulls per annum. At an international level, Semayr is second only to Finland in this area for the Ayrshire breed. In 2003, Semayr entered a joint venture with LIC and since that time all bulls, both proven and unproven, have been marketed solely by LIC. Semayr is also the only agency marketing unproven Ayrshire semen in New Zealand to run a formal Progeny Test Scheme. To encourage the use of Ayrshire Progeny Test bulls, the Association also offers free registration to all progeny of Semayr Progeny Test bulls and free TOP Classification where a minimum of 20% or two years olds are sired by Semayr Progeny Test bulls. Ace Herd In 1999, the Association implemented the Ayrshire Open Nucleus Herd. With the objective of hastening the rate of genetic improvement within the Ayrshire breed, the Nucleus Herd animals were selected from members’ herds, of high genetic ancestry with emphasis on a higher level of conformation. These animals were farmed on three different properties under commercial conditions. Once calved at two years, they were evaluated from their level of production and conformation with the best of these animals being considered as bull dams. It became evident that an expansion in one way or another was needed, and in 2001 the three groups of animals came together to form the basis for the Ace Herd, a 50/50 sharemilking venture in Taranaki, milking a total of 230 cows. In brief, the landowner allows us to put our herd of cows on his property, the owner supplies the fixed assets (e.g. Cowshed, milking plant etc) and we (the Ayrshire Association) supply the herd, tractor etc. The owner receives 50% of the income derived from milk supplied to the Dairy Company and we receive the other 50% of the income. From our share we have to pay for a lower order sharemilker who milks and does all stock work and farm maintenance. This equates to approximately 20% of the farm income so the final outcome is that the Association would receive approximately 30% of the total income derived from the milk produced. The herd was given the prefix ACEAYR, and in its first season of operation set a new farm-best production record, which was then broken again in two subsequent seasons. In 2008 the Ace farm moved from Taranaki to a new sharemilking position near Clinton, South Otago. The herd size was increased to 450, with many members taking the opportunity to sell a cow to the Association for $1000NZ ($721 USD) (at a time of recordhigh cow values) in return for receiving free registrations on all female stock born from 2008 onwards. The herd was successfully farmed at Clinton until the sharemilking

contract ended at the end of the 2014-15 season. With no new contract available, the cows from the herd have since been leased out. The Board are currently working with an investor in anticipation of being able to take on a new contract and bring the herd back together again for the 2017-18 season. All animals in the herd are now owned by Ayrshire New Zealand, which has added significantly to the assets of the Association. Website: www.ayrshire.org.nz Facebook: Ayrshire New Zealand AYRSHIRE PEDIGREEE SHINES THROUGH By Sue O’Dowd, reprinted courtesy The Taranaki Daily News, New Zealand A young Taranaki woman’s life-long love for Ayrshire cattle has been recognised with a national award.

Kylee Perrett has won Ayrshire New Zealand’s prestigious Kiteroa Trophy for her contribution to the breed. The daughter of prominent Ayrshire breeder and exhibitor Ivan Fredrickson, she has inherited her father’s love of breeding, showing and judging cattle. As soon as she was old enough she fed calves, shifted cows and joined her father on the show circuit, grooming animals and ensuring they were fed. She’s now a New Zealand Ayrshire Association junior judge and is well on the way to establishing herself on the show circuit. A four-time winner of the Arran Trophy at the New Zealand Ayrshire Association youth judging competition at the New Zealand Dairy Event (NZDE) in Feilding, she is the only person to have won it more than once. She has also won the NZDE All Breeds Young Judge Competition twice, beating all placegetters in the Ayrshire, Jersey and Holstein-Friesian contests. Perrett said she would not have the eye for dairy cattle if it was not for her father. She and husband Danny bought her parents’ 260-cow Sentinal herd, which includes 220 pedigree Ayrshire cows, in the 2014-15 dairy season and are sharemilking on their 95 hectare [235 acre] (effective) farm at Ngaere in Central Taranaki, where their annual production exceeds 100,000 kilograms [220,462 pounds] of milk solids. Their cow, Fairleigh BS Bluebell, was 31

named 2015-16 Taranaki Ayrshire Cow of the Year, was the breed champion at last year’s Hawera and Stratford A&P shows and reserve champion at this year’s New Zealand Dairy Event. The five-year-old cow, bought as an in-calf heifer, produced 632 kilograms of milk solids last season. “I love the Ayrshire breed so it’s not hard to promote it,” said Perrett, who’s been Taranaki Ayrshire Club secretary for six years. She keeps in regular contact with the 40-strong membership and encourages breeders to take part in on-farm type and progeny competitions, farm walks and awards evenings. As the club’s delegate to the Egmont and Stratford A&P Associations, she helps prepare the show schedules. The Stratford A&P Association junior vice-president is following in the footsteps of her father who was president for eight years until he retired in 2010. “Ayrshires are what I’ve grown up with. They’re a hardy breed and calving’s a breeze. They have a great temperament and good longevity.” The couple’s Ayrshires maintain a low somatic cell count - the average of just 78 last season was achieved without dry cow therapy. Facing their third season of a low farmgate milk price, the couple were frugal in their spending, she said. “We just have to roll with it.” The part-time job she inherited from her father as a sales representative for Semex, the world’s largest artificial insemination company, tops up their farm income. “It’s surprising how many farmers have a few Ayrshires in their herds,” she said. GLENMORE AYRSHIRES By Pam Goodin, first printed in the New Zealand Ayrshire Bulletin #165 April 2016 What a difference six years makes! The last time the Ayrshire Bulletin included an article on Glenmore Farms was in Autumn 2010. Then, the farm covered 260 hectares, the family milked 500 cows out of one shed and Donald had just joined the Board of the Association. In October 2015 when the family was interviewed again, the farm was

320 hectares, they calved down 1100 cows at the start of the 2015-16 season, milk out of two sheds and Donald Green is the President of the Ayrshire Association. The Glenmore herd is now the largest Ayrshire Donald Green operation in New Zealand. The driving force behind the increase in scale has been the return to the farm of Donald and Anne’s sons, Chris and Tim. While they were already on farm back in 2010 and the expansion was already underway, the rate of increase has surprised them all. But with more land becoming available on neighbouring properties, the family have taken the opportunity to continue to expand to ensure the unit remains viable for both Chris and Tim into the future. Indeed, they have purchased even more neighbouring land in recent weeks, and will again be looking for more cows. The Green family have been on their farm near Leeston in Canterbury since 1962. Originally farming in partnership with his father Colin from 1972, Donald and Anne took over the land in 1982 and were farming in their own right by the late 1980s. In 2000 a 40-aside herringbone was built, and a couple of years ago another herringbone shed was added adjacent to the house. The locations of the two sheds clearly split the farm into two herds. Chris and Tim each now manage a separate herd at the height of the season. With the herd mixed for winter grazing on farm, the start calving date is 1 August and the herds are split based on calving date. All of the cows calve up the road in the older shed, and the first 500 or so will remain at that shed for the remainder of the season. The balance of the cows will move down to the new shed after calving. While that sees one herd in action a bit earlier than the other, at the end of May the herds are swapped around, again based on calving date, so that the earlier calvers are dried off first and they drop back to one shed in operation for the final weeks of the season.

32

Each herd will milk 550 cows at peak. Tim (at the new shed) has two full time workers, including Association member Sarah Greig, and Chris has one full time staff member and one milker. The main farm is 320 hectares (310 hectares effective) [790 acres, 766 effective]. The Green family have taken on a lease support block of 140 hectares over the river and approximately 10 kilometers [6.2 miles] away by road. The cows are wintered there, and the young stock also grazed there. While the young stock return to the home farm in time for mating, the cows are walked to and from the support block. This block has more free draining soils than the home farm and is also used for making baleage. Around 85% of the total farm area is now under irrigation from a total of eight centre pivot irrigators across both the home farm and the lease block. The balance of the farm is irrigated using rotorainers and sprinklers in the corners. The water is sourced from eight to nine bore wells throughout the farm, and there is approximately four kilometers [2.5 miles] of pivot irrigation. Donald, Chris and Tim grow most of their own supplement, only buying in some straw and palm kernel. The cows receive palm kernel at 1.5 kilograms [3.3 pounds] per day for around 130 days (approx. 200 kilograms [440 pounds] per cow). They are also dabbling with feeding molasses in the shed during calving, as it seems to help get the cows into the shed. The family are still growing fodder beet, and the 10 hectares [24.7 acres] sown last season yielded 250 tonnes of edible bulb. This is harvested, stored on-farm and fed out in the spring. Fodder beet is high in energy so it works to supplement grass and at a cost of only $0.19 per kilogram DM it is also costeffective. The young cows learn from the way that the older cows eat it. The Greens have entered the crop in the local A & P Winter Feed Competition for the last couple of years, with their crop of fodder beet beating out the local cropping farms. This competition is based on quality and yield, Glenmore achieves a yield of 32 tonne per hectare.

2016 World Conference Edition

Glenmore also enter the local A & P heifer competition. A conformation-based competition, the Glenmore heifers have won the Ellesmere section twice and also went on to win the Canterbury Competition in 2015. While neither of the boys is really interested in showing at this stage, Donald is still a regular at the local Ellesmere A & P Show. With a long string of Glenmore Champions coming from the farm, the latest is the 201516 South Island Reserve Champion Cow Glenmore B Lara, A8-8, a two-year-old cow sired by Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette-ET. Over the years, Glenmore has produced 15 South Island Ayrshire Champions and Reserve Champions dating back to the 1973-74 show season. Despite the huge increase in cow numbers over the last few years, the family has worked hard to maintain a rate of 95% Ayrshires. More replacements are kept each year, and in the 2015-16 season they also have approximately 150 cows on lease from the Ayrshire Association’s Ace Herd. Usually Donald will cull on mastitis and empty cows. The herd finally reached full capacity last season, but that was including the cows leased from the Ace Herd, so there were plenty of replacements reared last spring. Indeed, the only culling taking place now is a couple on temperament. In the 2014-15 season, the herd of 432 pedigree Ayrshire cows averaged 5,266 litres milk, 223 kilograms fat and 194 kilograms protein (417 kilograms milksolids) in 273 days [11,610M 4.2% 492F 3.7% 428P; 919 pounds milk solids], and the total herd supplied 352,000 kilograms [776,027 pounds] milksolids to the factory. In the current season they have supplied 350,000 kilograms [771,617 pounds] milksolids to the factory up to 20 March.

2016 World Conference Edition

The cows are mated to AI, mostly Ayrshire. A firm believer in the need to prove young Ayrshire sires, Donald also uses Semayr sire proving bulls alongside proven Ayrshire bulls. Donald has used Jersey over the heifers, and they come back onto the milking platform for 10 days of AI mating and are finished with an Angus bull. Donald will also use some short gestation Jersey for late matings, and the resultant calves are not retained as replacements. No calves are kept from any late calvers. Up to 10 Ayrshire homebred bulls are used on the farm to tail off the herd, and some will also have semen taken off for home use. The family have formed a four-way partnership between Donald, Anne Chis and Tim. The land is owned by a company with all four parties in the company holding shares. The cows are owned by a trading partnership, also owned by all four partners. This is an important step to provide a succession plan for Chris and Tim, ensuring their future on the farm. One of the reasons that the partnership within the family is so successful, according to Anne, is that each of the main players has different strengths and areas of interest. Donald enjoys the breeding side of the business, so all breeding decisions are left up to him. Chris carries the calculator, Tim the tools and father and sons all complement each other and work well together. Anne works off farm as the Practice Manager for the local medical centre. The boys prefer to grow the grass, feed the cows and harvest the milk. Chris is a former banker, and his financial skills are invaluable to the operation, although both sons are involved with finances and budgeting alongside Donald. Tim was a builder prior to

returning home to the farm, another skill that has proven to be invaluable. Tim built the new cowshed, extended both yards last winter and has built other buildings on the farm. Chris married partner Emma in January, while Tim is still single. Both boys are involved in the local young farmers club, and while Chris has now retired from rugby, Tim still plays his “last year” every year. Donald has been on the Board of Ayrshire New Zealand since 2009, representing members in the Canterbury ward. He was elevated to President in 2015. He is both a Senior Judge and TOP inspector. He has served for a number of years as Convenor of the Youth Committee and is attributed with the success of the youth programmes implemented in the Association over recent years. He has been a staunch behind-thescenes supporter of the Ayrshire seminars. Donald is also past President of the Ellesmere A & P Association and the local rugby club. The Glenmore setup is an excellent example of a family farming for the future. Their succession plan has been set up early and all parties to the partnership are benefiting from the structure. Donald and Anne have more time to explore interests off farm (Donald’s presidency being the prime example), and Chris and Tim have clear pathways to future farm ownership.

South Africa Ayrshires National Championships

Melkhout Free Beer 11 is the first Ayrshire Heifer to have won five shows. Among others, she was crowned National Heifer, National On Farm Champion and the interbreed heifer at Sandringham show. She also won several awards at the Swellendam show, Agri Megaweek 2014, Sandringham Show 2014 and the Mega National Championships. The National De Heus Ayrshire herd competition took place all over the country this year. Judge Walter Finlayson undertook the huge task and visited all the participants’ farms within two weeks. Northern Dairy Show

Bloemfontein, April 23, 2015 It was a first in the history of Bloemfontein show that three dairy societies made an effort to unite and presented the Meadow Northern Dairy show in conjunction with Jersey, Holstein and the Ayrshire Society. Walter Finlayson officiated as Ayrshire judge for the 2015 Meadow Northern Dairy Show. Walter has been a member of the Ayrshire Society since 1952 and has won the Gold Cup at the Ayrshire National Show four times; the first time in 1963 and most recently 2012. In addition to the national championship trophies his “Raigmore” prefix has won countless show titles over the years and Walter has also served on the Ayrshire society council as member and President for many years. United Kingdom Ayrshires Considering the downturn in the world milk market over the last year in particular, we at the Ayrshire Cattle Society in the UK have seen a continued growth of interest in our breed that as we all know can thrive under any system utilising forage economically. A number of new members have joined our breed over recent years and we had the pleasure to include one of these herds at our annual conference in May of this year.

Richard Harris of Harris Family Farm

The Harris family purchased Alkmonton Old Hall Farm in October 2008, and then Middleton Park Farm in August 2011 to create their farm today of 520 acres. The farm is near Ashbourne in the Derbyshire Dales. Until 2013 they farmed commercial breeding ewes, a pedigree Limousin suckler herd and arable. A relatively modern milking parlour was already installed in one of the buildings, so they decided that dairying was the way forward. After looking at various breeds of cows, and wanting to steer away from the Holstein, they eventually decided that Ayrshires were the cows for them. The herd has major influences from the Stamford, Willhome, Castern, Pylon and Oathall herds, with cows also purchased from Tessvale, Hunnington, Whitecroft and Gwynnog, to mention a few. Two and half years from the first cows arriving on the farm, their own heifers have just begun to calve into the herd, the first being Alkmonton Napier Maria who also had a heifer calf by Hilltown Oblique. The family were all very excited to say the least! The farm is approximately 200 acres arable and 320 acres grass, with roughly 100 acres of the grass grown as a two-year ley for silage as part of the arable rotation. The cows are fed in the winter on a TMR diet feeding for 20 litres [44 pounds], which is then topped up in the parlour feeding the higher-yielding cows. The cow’s diet includes grass silage, whole crop wheat, rolled beans, wheat and barley which is grown on the farm. During the summer the diet feeder is parked up for around four months, and the cows are expected to do

what Ayrshires do best - walk to the fields and graze! The herd is currently averaging 6,821 kgs milk [15,037 pounds], 3.77% F 3.34% P. The herd’s yields and solids are improving all the time! The herd is being bred as pure Ayrshire, as they are a low-maintenance, trouble-free cow with a real willingness to milk, both in a grazing and more intensive system. They feel that the Ayrshire has a lot to offer the modern dairy farmer. Looking forward they plan to build on some of the cow families they have purchased, and continue to improve them with modern genetics using British, American and Canadian blood to try to open up the gene pool without cross breeding and compromising the breed. They have recently classified and had four cows go Excellent. These are all families they would like to grow and improve in their herd - Stamford Flash Girl 37 EX 90, Stamford Flash Girl 39 EX 92, Pylon Magenta EX 91 and Castern Tulip 70 EX 90. A Limousin sweeper bull is used with around 40 cows being bulled to beef each year. Only the heifer calves are reared, with all bulls sold under 42 days old. The Limousin cross heifers are reared to use as recipients for embryos in their pedigree Limousin herd. They also plan to create a high health status herd, and are currently working closely with their vets and the SAC to become accredited for BVD, IBR and Johnes Disease. This in turn would hopefully enhance the value of their stock as potential buyers could purchase with piece of mind. In 2015 they had their first attempt at showing, starting with Stafford Show where Pylon Magenta took overall Champion Ayrshire which they were delighted with. They then headed to Leek Show with Whitecroft Ruth 120 and Hunnington Rose where they were the Interbreed Champion Pair. UK News Features & Events Yet another superb Ayrshire Young breeders event took place in Cheshire in April this year. This is an event where all of our young breeders get together for competitions and fun for three days. The competitions held are stock judging, bull mating, clipping and showmanship. Points are gained for each competition which go towards our Hugh Stevenson trophy for the highest-placed Young member over the three days. The winner also gets the opportunity to go overseas either on the World youth trips or on pre-arranged trips with another member country. The 2016 winner was Matthew McLean

from Northern Ireland who will travel to New Zealand in January 2017. At our recent AGM in Derbyshire welcomed our new President to office, Mr. Gilmour Lawrie from Monkton in Scotland, who runs the famous Brieryside herd. Vice President is Mr Philip Williams (Willhome Ayrshires) from Havorfordwest in Wales and the Junior Vice President is Mr Keith Davidson (Halmyre herd) from Castle Douglas in Scotland. A number of prestigious awards and accolades are presented during this time. Mr Chris Window Gilmour Lawrie (Hunnington) won a lifetime achievement award for his work to the breed and the society throughout his lifetime. The premier breeder award for the 2015 year was won by the Lawrie family at Cuthill Towers.

Much work has been done in finding the best cow families in the UK and monitoring their breeding going forward with the Breed Heritage programme. In many cases the Breed Heritage team suggest and supply the semen for the matings to secure the development of the breed in the UK for the future. Over 140 animals are now included on our watch list, which continues to grow as each female calf born is added. 2016 World Conference Edition

AYRSHIRE HIGH CPI COW LIST FOR AUGUST 2016

The CPI formula is based upon six traits with the following emphasis: 25% fat, 35% protein, 25% type, 6% daughter pregnancy rate (DPR), 5% udder depth and 4% somatic cell. Milk yield is not included as a separate trait in the formula because it is highly correlated to protein and fat yields. The top 125 cows are listed below.
