I

would like to thank the breeders of Minnesota for a great convention. To everyone involved in planning and making it all happen, you did a great job. On Wednesday evening, the Welcome To Minnesota Nice - 2016 kick-off was underway. Special thanks to Glenn and Deb Johnson for hosting a wonderful evening. The next day were the tours and I heard many favorable comments and everyone enjoyed their day. Thursday evening was Youth Awards and the Fun Auction, and I want to congratulate all the youth winners and participants. Again the Fun Auction was a great success with donations of $13,000 plus. Special thanks to all of the consignors and the buyers for making this another great Fun Auction and supporting your Juniors. The last day was filled from start to finish, beginning with the awards breakfast and ending with the National Brown Swiss Sale that evening. The sale average of $5,300 plus again shows the value of the Brown Swiss cow and the dedication of you, the breeders. This issue is full of the convention highlights. For your quick reference, we have provided the motions for the board meeting below.

Until next month,

David

President Lee Barber called the 136th Annual Meeting of the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association of the USA (BSCBA) to order on July 8, 2016, in Owatonna, Minnesota. Executive Secretary David Wallace gave the notice of the annual meeting. President Barber then called for a moment of silence for those deceased breeders and friends over the past year. Janel Wailes, Chair of the Tally Committee, gave the report that as of April 30, 2016, the BSCBA had 848 members with a quorum requirement of 85 needed for a quorum. There were 120 members present in person or by proxy giving a quorum. A motion was made by Rita Kennedy to approve the minutes from 2015 with a second by Galen Fick. Motion passed. President’s Message President Barber thanked Minnesota for a great convention and introduced the Board of Directors and office staff in attendance. After which President Barber gave his speech highlighting staffing and the reduced fee for foreign bull registrations to $100 with a requirement of proof of parentage and Official 3-generation pedigree with seal. Beginning in 2017, all judges for the All-American contest must be on the approved judges list to vote. He also discussed the discontinued data collection on oxytocin use and also we will be testing the ability to add NM$ for heifers and 6

cows like the bull lists have with the August Sire Summary. Executive Secretary’s Report Executive Secretary Wallace gave the financial report stating finances are always a concern; but he would like to report that we have less expenses so we are in the black this year and that the roof repair was put into capital improvements. He also announced that staffing will be streamlined and that the position of Superintendent of Records will be filled but redefined. Executive Secretary Wallace also announced that an interbreed cooperation employee for classification will be hired as classification coordinator when agreed by all associations. This will hopefully happen by years end. Executive Secretary Wallace also says we are working on leads but it takes time and constant communication. He mentioned that an upgrade on the classification program is to be started by 2017. COMMITTEE REPORTS Youth Committee Carol Regusci gave the Youth Committee Report. She reported the participation for 2015 and the sponsors for 2016. The hiring of Skylar DeGroft as the youth coordinator will be a good addition providing the youth with someBrown Swiss Bulletin

one that they can relate to. Show Committee Chairman David Gunter announced the judges for the National shows. He also reported that we will be holding off on doing a genomic award for heifers in National shows. Chairman Gunter also notified members of the new show judges for 2017. Genetics Committee Chairman Tom Portner reported the uncertainty surrounding the utilization of the Oxytocin data that we have collected. He thanked Dr. Chad Dechow for all the research and data he has provided this committee over the last year. Chairman Portner also announced the potential for adjusting the PPR formula to have more weight for fat but we will be waiting a while before changing anything. Type Committee Chairman Richard Sparrow announced the updating of field equipment and the adding of traits for emphasis in the future. Old Business There was no old business to be addressed.

New Business New business began with Dan Gilbert of New Generation Genetics suggesting to have milk speed considered for genomics. Executive Secretary David Wallace replied that George Wiggins could work with the data. Lori Read of Reads Brown Swiss suggested the BSCBA do more marketing to other breeders other than Brown Swiss. President Lee Barber made mention of advertising in other magazines to help while still working with the Bulletin. Joe Loehr of Loehr Dairy had concern about the Front End Capacity trait for classification and how it would compete in commercial feed efficiency. Executive Secretary David Wallace replied that it was not about how tall or angular the cow is but more about the width of chest to accommodate for feed and to function better. Dennis Mashek of Hilltop Acres questioned the higher stature scores when cows are classified, he looks for more profitable cows and not high stature when a cow is scored. Dennis also asked if changes needed to start with judges to help stop this from happening? Executive Secretary David Wallace answered that when classifying it does not matter to him

about the size but he would discuss this with classifiers and that he agreed that changes need to be made starting with judges. Pete Vanderham asked about what had happened to the SDSU research. Executive Secretary David Wallace stated that SDSU still had a herd that has an energetic herdsman that we hoped to do more work with. Lori Read mentioned that someone from SDSU would be attending convention the day of the meeting to buy new cows for the program. President Lee Barber stated to the attendees that the staff going to other countries is not paid for by the association office but by USLGE. Jake Hushon of New Generation Genetics asked about the decline in the use of social media. Executive Secretary David Wallace has acknowledged the decline and hopes to do more going forward once changes in the office have taken place. ELECTION OF DIRECTORS Richard Sparrow, Kentucky was elected as the President. Jeff Kennedy, Pennsylvania was re-elected as the District II Director. Gary Overstreet, Texas was re-elected as District VIII Director and Carol Regusci, California

was re-elected as the director from District IX. President Lee Barber was presented citations of leadership for his four years of dedication to the Board of Directors. Charlie Voelker moved to adjourn the meeting and Brian Voegeli seconded the motion. The meeting adjourned at 11:35 a.m. Respectfully Submitted, Allicia Horn Recording Secretary

Master Breeder Awards Submitted by Connie Gritton Winter

Historical Master Breeder

In 1936, a couple emigrated from Holland to southern California. In 1939, the 2016 Historical Master Breeder was born - Pete Vanderham. Upon his arrival in the U.S., Joe Vanderham got a job as a milker at a local dairy and eventually started his own herd. The first Brown Swiss were grades purchased in 1944. By age 18 Pete was milking half the herd, twice a day.

Pete Vanderham being presented the Historical Master Breeder Award by Roger Neitzel

Pete’s showing career began at 13 when he showed Holsteins in 4-H and FFA at the local city fairs. In June of 1957, Pete attended the first ever Great Western Dairy Show in Los Angeles. It was then Pete met Orville Kurtz who was there with his herd of Brown Swiss. At the show, Pete bought a cow from Orville - Rancho Rustic Lavanity - Pete’s first registered Brown Swiss female. In the next several years, Pete spent time at the shows with Orville Kurtz and another Brown Swiss breeder, Pete Gerger. The two men had a strong influence in teaching Pete to breed the “right kind of cow.” Pete Vanderham purchased Butte Meadows Juanita OCS as a 3 or 4 year old cow from Mr. Gerger. Born in 1958, she was bred by Orville and out of a Rancho Rustic sire and dam. In 1964, Pete purchased Butte Meadows Jane as a heifer from Mr. Gerger. He paid a total of $410 for the two animals. In 1967, Pete and his older brother, Corrie, formed a partnership and purchased their father’s herd of 290 cows. In 1975, the Norwalk property was sold and land was purchased near Mira Loma, where Pete currently lives. The new acreage was split in half with each brother developing their own herd in mirrorlike facilities. The partnership dissolved in 1978 and Pete Vanderham Dairy, Inc. was established. Pete’s 32 acres included corrals, a parlor, a calf facility and house. The herd 8

eventually grew to around 1100 cows with about 10% registered Brown Swiss. All feed was purchased. In 1968, Pete decided he had a two-yearold that could compete and win on the national level. She was Bridge View R. F. Joanne, from the aforementioned Butte Meadows Juanita OCS. Joanne traveled to World Dairy Expo for the national show with a Milking Shorthorn herd. Orville Kurtz was on hand to show her for Pete. Joanne was named Grand Champion. In September 1969, the LA County Fair hosted the Southwest Centennial Brown Swiss Show judged by Norman E. Magnussen. He made the two-year-old Bridge View Aristocrat Jolene Grand Champion and noted she had the best udder he’d seen since Jane of Vernon. He urged Pete to take Jolene to the National Show - that year in Columbus, Ohio. Jolene traveled to Columbus with Pete in a converted horse trailer and went on to place first and win Grand Champion. Jolene’s dam: Butte Meadows Jane. Pete’s $410 investment had given him two National Show Grand Champions in the very next generation. In 1970, the National Show returned to Columbus as did Jolene where she was again Grand Champion. Three consecutive years - three consecutive Grands at the National Show. And thus began a long history of National Shows, Grand Champions and All Americans. During the next decade as the multiple National Shows came into play, Pete and his family exhibited annually at the Western National. In 1971 he was Premier Exhibitor at the Western National and was Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor at the Western National in 1972, 77, 79, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85 and 86. At the 1980 Centennial National, Pete traveled again to Madison. He was Premier Breeder of the show and had the winning Best Three Females. At the 1981 Western National, a two-year-old was named Grand Champion. Following the show, Pete purchased the cow, Idyl Wild Improver Jinx, from a junior exhibitor. In 1982, he took her to the Eastern and Central Nationals. She was named Grand at both shows. The following spring, Jinx sold in the Springtime Show Window Sale and became the highest selling Brown Swiss at $60,000. In 1986, Pete returned to Madison, won Premier Breeder and tied for Premier ExhibiBrown Swiss Bulletin

tor. In 87, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 97 and 98, Pete was Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor in Madison at the Central National. He was Premier Breeder in Madison in 1999 and 2001 and tied in 2002. Through the years, Pete accumulated over 200 All American Nominations, 58 All Americans and 44 Reserve All Americans. Frequently winning the Best Three Class, he had All American Best Three 15 times. He had nine cows named Grand Champion at a National Show. From such a strong breeding program evolved some high-profile bulls. Most influential across the U.S. was Bridge View Elegant Jade, sire of numerous All American honorees and show winners and Premier Sire at multiple national shows. In 1985, Pete Vanderham Dairy topped the Group II  division of the Ira Inman PTPR  Award. Pete was elected National Director in 1986 and served through 1989. In 1994, he was elected National President and served one term. The Bridge View Brown Swiss herd was dispersed in 2009.

Active Master Breeder

The 2016 Active Master Breeder has spent his entire life with the Brown Swiss breed. His involvement and contributions have been well-rounded from show winners, high index cows, top PPR bulls, being active in the state association, serving on the National Board and serving two terms as National President. This year’s honoree is Charles Voelker, Voelker’s Brown Swiss, Perryville, Missouri. Charlie and his family are the fifth generation to farm land that was homesteaded by the Voelker family in the 1860s. Their first Swiss were purchased in 1948 and during the 1960s it became a 100% Brown Swiss herd.

Young Breeder Award Joe Loehr

Vice President Tom Portner presents Joe Loehr the Young Breeder Award.

By Amber Dietz Joe Loehr, Loehr Dairy LLC, Mt. Calvary, Wisconsin Loehr Dairy LLC is operated by Joe and his two brothers and has been a family business for over 140 years. Joe handles all of the herd management decisions as well as the financial records for the farm. Joe’s younger brother Mark manages crop production and machinery and his older brother Dan is in charge of facilities and special projects. Joe’s father and older sister also help assist with seasonal crop work along with his other seven siblings helping out when needed. Growing up, Joe and his family milked 40 Holstein cows in a tie-stall stanchion barn. After graduating high school, Joe began working full time on the farm and the family added 12 more tie-stalls to their facility and a calf building onto the farm. Three years later, Joe and Dan formed Loehr Dairy LLC and added another 120 cows in a freestall barn with a doublefour-flat-barn milking parlor. As the years came, Joe and his brothers started expanding their herd even more and have built numerous facilities to help with their growing needs along with expanding their farming acreage. Master cont. from previous page

ents. The herd size grew, increasing in both production and type, and numbers around 150 in the milking herd at the moment. The current Rolling Herd Average on 132 cows is 20,659 pounds. Today’s work force includes Charlie, his son, Chad, and two full-time employees. They own 260 acres and rent an additional 100 for a total of 360 acres. Feed is home grown wheat for balage, corn for silage and alfalfa for hay. In 1991, Charlie showed at the Missouri State Fair for the first time. In 1993, he had Grand Champion with Voelkers J King Ida and in 1995, he was named Premier Breeder for the first time at the state fair. Voelkers have shown there every year since 1991. There have been numerous Champions and many Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners to take home to Perryville. 2004 was a banner year for Voelker Denmark Fergie. She was Grand Champion at the Central National Junior Show, Grand at the Southeast National and Honorable Mention All-American

Today, Loehr Dairy LLC milks a total of 425 cows three times a day with 35 of those cows being registered Brown Swiss. Joe has been married for nine years and has five young children who like to help out around the farm. Loehr Dairy LLC currently has four honored cows on the top 300 PPR cow list. These four cows come from different cow families. Holyland Tops and Holyland Treasure 2352 are both daughters of Cozy-Nook Joel Tipsy ‘EX90.’ Tipsy also has six sons in active AI use. Holyland Kicks 2083 is the daughter of Holyland Driver Kicks. Holyland Driver Kicks also has another very highranking daughter on the genomic heifer list. The fourth member of the top PPR cow list is Holyland Agenda Taffy who is developing well and is the daughter of Jakel Prestige Taffy, whom they developed into a 92-point cow with high lifetime production. Joe also has 11 heifers in the top 100. Joe has been involved in many different offices and organizations over his lifetime. He is an Ag-Source Delegate and started in 2012, he was a part of the Fond du Lac County Land Use Planning Committee from 2012-2013, he is a Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Parish Council Committee member, and is also a Third Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. Loehr Dairy LLC has received the BSA Genetic Honor Herd Award in 2012, 2013 and 2014, as well as the Progressive Genetic Herd award in 2013 and 2014. They earned the Holstein Association Progressive Genetic Herd Award in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Joe’s goals for their Brown Swiss herd

are to continue to improve the production and conformation of their cows and to breed higher-producing, more effective cows that provide the necessary nutrients and resources for the world. He would also like to bring their Brown Swiss herd average to 25,000 pounds of milk or higher while maintaining a minimum of 3.4 percent protein. Lastly, Joe wants to continue to market genetics from their herd to other people around the world.

4-Year-Old. Voelkers were Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder at the Southeast National in 2004 and 2005. Voelkers Migel Candid was the first 5-Year -Old at the Central National in 2009 and All American that year. Candid was scored ‘4E94/95MS’ with a high record of 33,460M. Voelkers Wndt Chilli Pepper, her son by Top Acres C Wonderment ET, has been one of the most popular sires in recent years. Candid’s daughter and full sister to Chilli Pepper, Voelkers Wndrnt Carabella, is ‘EX90’ with a high record of 32,300M. In 2011, Carabella was fourth on the PPR  Lists while Candid was tied for eighth. Carabella is the dam of Voelkers TD  Carter and Voelkers Galaxy Cosmo. Another popular sire, Carter is currently top of the PPR Type List at +1.3. Charlie served two terms as president of the Missouri Brown Swiss Association and co-chaired the 1994 National Convention hosted by Missouri. From 199 to 2000, he represented District VI as a National Direc-

tor. From 2004 to 2008, Charlie served the National Association as its president. He also served many years on the National Type Committee. The entire Voelker family was involved in the work growing up and all the kids showed their Swiss, bringing home many blue ribbons, championships and state and national Bell Ringer wins. Charlie and Nancy have five children: Chad, Suzanne, Katie, Dayne and Grant. Chad has joined the operation and Voelker dairy is currently undergoing a major expansion and construction upgrade. Ten years ago, a 160-cow compost barn was built. In the 2016 upgrade, a 40-cow compost barn is being added along with a new double-10 parallel parlor. RFID tracking is being installed to identify each cow as they enter the parlor and will aid in monitoring cow health and performance. The plan is to increase the milking herd to 190-200 head.

Troy and Lindsey Nevil The Nevil Family includes Troy, Lindsey and their one-year-old daughter, Tenley. Troy is a full-time farmer and Lindsey works as a full-time registered nurse. The family is currently milking 47 Brown Swiss. The herd at this time resides at Kadence Farm, Lindsey’s parents’ farm. Troy and Lindsey work alongside of her parents for all aspects of the farm. Troy assists with all field work on the 500 acres of alfalfa, wheat, corn and beans that are grown and also provides all of the care for their Brown Swiss cattle. Troy first got interested in the Brown Swiss breed when he worked at Voegeli Farms from 2000-2007. He bought his first Brown Swiss in partnership with Voegeli Farms and Hillpoint Partners when he worked there. It then became a passion within the years to come. Troy and Lindsey have had numerous awards over the years, including Bittersweet Legacy Daisy Dukes being the Unanimous All-American 3-Year-Old in 2015, receiving the 2013 Genetic Honors Herd Award and having their very first herd bull in stud, Bittersweet Carter Ben who is currently number five for G-milk. Troy and Lindsey’s goals for their herd are to develop a herd of medium-sized Brown Swiss with sound udders that milk well. They have put an emphasis on cow families in developing their herd. They would also like to breed cows with deep udder creases and long fore udders in their herd. Matthew & Megan Stuessel Matt and Megan Stuessel along with their boys, Jacob and Levi, own M&M Swiss. M&M Swiss was created in 2002 through a Christmas present that Matt gave to Megan’s dad, Gene. Matt and Megan spent a lot of time researching bulls for mating and preparing their Swiss for shows. Gene had noticed their

10

passion and gave Matt and Megan back their two Brown Swiss cows in appreciation of all of their help on the farm. In 2006, Matt and Megan purchased 30 acres of land just a few miles from Megan’s family farm and started to build their own facilities. The first building to go up was the heifer shed that Matt and his father built. Their hay ground is on a five-year rotation and has three varieties of hay that they use throughout the year. They do all of their planting, tilling, and harvesting of their crops. Matt and Megan have been very involved in leadership roles and organizations. Matt is the President of the Jackson County Dairy Committee, an active member of the National Mastitis Council and an Alma Center Little League Assistant Coach. Megan is a Jackson County Farm Bureau Director, was the Co-Chair of the Brown Swiss National Convention Junior Heifer Show, was a Wisconsin Junior Brown Swiss Advisor and is a Hixton Lutheran Church Substitute Sunday School Teacher. Matt and Megan say this: “We put the blood, sweat, and tears in the success or failure of our animals at the farm. We show and breed what we have and they have been very good to us. We are proud of where we have come with the breeding and raising of our cattle and can look back over the many generations of M&M Swiss with the confidence that we did it together, while having fun along the way, and meeting great people who have the same passion for great cattle.” Tammy Lee Voegeli Tammy Lee Voegeli is a fifth-generation Voegeli Brown Swiss breeder. Tammy’s grandparents moved to the present-day location of VoGrin Brown Swiss in 1950. Tammy now farms with her parents Louie and Debbie, who own the farm in partnership with her.

Brown Swiss Bulletin

They have a 71-cow tie-stall barn with seven box stalls used for special and calving cows. Tammy owns 16 of the 95 milking cows and 17 of the heifers on the farm. Tammy and her mother are in charge of daily duties on the farm, as her father works full-time as a semi driver. Tammy’s main responsibilities are calf care, sire selection, show cattle care and advertising. Along with her boyfriend Allyn Paulson, Tammy has recently begun diversifying the farm, adding a boarding business for show heifers. They currently house over 10 head. Tammy has a long list of brood cows and show winners she is very proud of. Recently, she was awarded the Reserve All-American Junior Best Three Females title in 2014. That group consisted of the 2014 All-American Fall Yearling, VoGrin Pepper Woodsy OCS; the 2014 Honorable Mention All-American Winter Calf, VoGrin Renegade Why Not Me; as well as VoGrin Roscoe Snookie. Tammy believes that sharing her firsthand experience with Brown Swiss Cattle offers great knowledge to new breeders or those who may be interested in the breed. She also encourages new breeders to become involved in the BSCBA’s many programs. Starting small by becoming a member can lead to savings as well as connections that are valuable to new breeders. Several goals drive Tammy and construct her vision for the future. Some of her specific goals include: breeding a national show winner, 94-point cow and multi-generation Excellent cow family; having the Cow for All Seasons or the Total Performance winner; becoming a State Brown Swiss President; obtain a Brown Swiss RHA of 25,000M; having the inventory to be able to sell 10 animals a year; expanding the show boarding program; and having her son, Dakota, participate in junior programs.

By Marjorie Rida he excitement of the National Sale began in Owatonna, Minnesota, on Friday, July 8, following a marvelous national convention and annual meeting and a wonderful pulled pork dinner compliments of ST Genetics. Bringing the gavel down at an exciting $16,000 was something very special. Lot 56 Holyland Twilight Keeps 2332 was consigned by Joe and Mark Loehr of Mt. Calvary, Wisconsin. She sold as number 41 PPR on the Top cow list at +174. This Twilight daughter sold with a contract from New Generation Genetics and interest from Accelerated Genetics and ST Genetics. With a daughter at +224 PPR, this young cow holds some great potential for her new owners Roger and Lori Read of Minnesota. Cutting Edge Stratus Sue ‘EX91/92MS,’ a consignment from Ken Main and Peter Vail, sold for $15,500. Already a proven show winner, she was the 2014 Honorable Mention AllAmerican Sr. 2-Year-Old and a 2015 nominated All-American Sr. 3-Year-Old, she was a special one. With the right cut and style, a beautiful dry udder, and two ‘2E92’ dams with show winnings backing her, she sold ready to calve in and hit the tanbark trail. Due in July to Biver, this 4-year-old was purchased by Ron Kelm of Wisconsin. Finishing out the consignments with five-figure prices, and the third-high seller was the consignment from Jodi Coppini and Donald Graft of Oregon and Indiana. Selling

Her dam Jo-Dee Prelude Nancy ET ‘2E94’ has records to 35,740M and was a two-time All-American Component Merit Cow and Reserve All-American as a Jr. 3-Year-Old. The granddam Valligrove Jetway Nora ‘2E93/92MS’ was All-American Component Merit and Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2007. The high-selling embryo package came from Olson Dairy of Minnesota. The five number one DT embryos sired by BMG Lust Get Lucky ET *TM were from Olsons Driver Kate Kinsey ‘VG88/90MS.’ She is the current #4 top cow on the PPR list at +215 PPR and +491 NM$, and is the #1 Protein cow at +56P on the April list. Ambassador ~ Elise Regusci Sending warm wishes to all Brown Swiss breeders and enthusiasts from sunny California! My name is Elise Regusci and I am serving as the 2016-2017 National Brown Swiss Ambassador after being selected from a group of finalists at the National Brown Swiss Convention in Owatonna, Minnesota. I live in the Central Valley of California in Modesto on my parents’ farm. My family owns and operates Top diMark Swiss, which started as a 4-H project in 2005 and has grown to a herd of about 100 registered Brown Swiss, Holsteins and Red and White Holsteins. I have had the opportunity to show my Brown Swiss at the Western National and International Brown Swiss Shows for the past 10 years. Currently, I am a student at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo where I am majoring in Dairy Science. At Cal Poly, I am a member of the Cal Poly Dairy Judging team and the Los Lecheros Dairy Club. I am more than excited to fill this role in our association and share my passion for the Brown Swiss cow with others! I would like to thank my parents, friends, and mentors for their continuous support. Please like the National Youth Brown Swiss Association on Facebook to stay up to date on deadlines and news! I look forward to meeting many of you on the tanbark trail this fall! Please feel free to introduce yourself and let me know of any comments or concerns about the association or activities! -Elise Regusci, 2016-2017 National Brown Swiss Ambassador elise.regusci@gmail.com National Brown Swiss Ambassador Runner-up is Christy Achen, the daughter of Craig and Cindy Achen of Lakin, Kansis

Achievment Winner ~ Sara Harn Greetings from the lovely Dairy State! My name is Sara Harn, and I am the 21-year-old daughter of Michele and Darrin and younger sister to Katie. I am a senior, graduating in December, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Dairy Science and Agriculture Business Management. Kalos Brown Swiss in Brooklyn, Wisconsin, is home to my family, about 10 Brown Swiss show heifers, and four horses. What started out as a 4-H project quickly grew into a passion, a few award-winning Swiss, a college degree, and now (hopefully) a career. I have been privileged to show my Brown Swiss across the nation, be the National Brown Swiss Youth Ambassador, the National Brown Swiss Association Intern and in the process- meet many of you along the way. I am honored to be the 2016 National Achievement Award Winner. Growing up in the Brown Swiss Association, I have always looked up to those who won this award before me, so to win it in my final year as a junior is so special to me. I cannot say enough thank yous to those who have mentored, encouraged or befriended me in the Brown Swiss breed. Thank you to my parents, to the Beutel family for my start in Brown Swiss, to the Elite Dairy team for taking me under your wing, to Jeremy and Kelsi Mayer for the great care of my cows, to WI Canton I for welcoming me at my very first Brown Swiss show 11 years ago, and to the Wisconsin Association for giving me roots in the breed. National Junior Bell Ringer Program Rules

The National Junior Bell Ringer Program provides an opportunity for Juniors across the country to participate in a national activity. It recognizes outstanding Junior-owned or leased animals exhibited at the Junior’s shows. The application for this contest is a photo and label explained below. Included in the contest are 16 standard female classes: Spring Heifer Calf, Winter Heifer Calf, Fall Heifer Calf, Summer Yearling Heifer, Spring Yearling Heifer, Winter Yearling Heifer, Fall Yearling Heifer, Yearling in Milk, Junior Two-Year Old, Senior Two-Year Old, Junior Three-Year Old, Senior Three-Year Old, Four Year-old, Five YearOld, Aged Cow, and Component Merit. ELIGIBILITY The National Bell Ringer contest is open to all National Brown Swiss Junior Members that meet the following requirements. To be eligible for competition: 1.) In Junior Shows, the junior member who owns the animal is to show her. If the owner cannot attend the show, another Brown Swiss Association junior member may show the animal. Also, in a class where a junior member owns more than one animal, the owner must show one animal; another Brown Swiss Association junior member may show the second animal. 2.) An animal must have stood first or second at a junior show and must have been shown by the junior. 3.) Animals entered in the National Junior Bell Ringer Program must be registered in the Official Herdbook, including CIE animals (white registration certificate with green border) or Second Step of the Identity Enrollment Program (IE green certificate with black border). The animal must be registered before the show with the Certificate of Registry available for inspection at the show. 4.) For an animal to be exhibited as junior owned, in all classes, the recorded ownership must show in the sole ownership of the exhibitor or a partnership comprised of Brown Swiss Association Junior Members. (Adult-Junior partnerships and family partnerships are not acceptable). All transfers and recorded ownerships must be dated by August 1st of the current show year for all classes. If joint ownership, one of the owners must be declared the exhibitor during check-in. Awards will be presented as one unit, to all owners equally. Animals that are leased through the National Brown Swiss Association Lease Program are also eligible to be shown as juniors. The leased animal’s recorded owner will receive open show awards. 5.) Juniors must be 9 -21 years of age on January 1 of the current year.

ENTRIES A professional, color, unretouched 5X7 photo taken of the animal during the calendar year must be provided. Information on the back of the picture should include: The animal’s name and registration number, birthdate, class entered, up to three Junior Show placings at Junior Shows where animal is shown by the junior as described under Eligibility, and name and address of junior. Labels are available from your state secretary, youth chairman, Association web page, or the national office and should be completed and affixed to the back of the picture. No other information other than what is asked for on the label should be included on the back of the picture. RESPONSIBILITIES For State Bell Ringer contests, each state association should establish a deadline for entries. State entries should be sent to an officer or committee chairman of the state association. The state association is responsible for appointing a special committee to select the State Bell Ringer and Reserve State Bell Ringer in each class as soon as possible after the shows are completed and the pictures are available. A state officer or committee member is responsible for seeing that the State and Reserve Bell Ringer selections, properly identified and with the aforementioned label affixed to the back of the pictures, are sent to the National Office by December 1. It is not necessary to participate in or win a state contest to participate in the national contest, however, for those that do win at the state level and are interested in competing in the national contest, both State and Reserve pictures can be sent; remember the picture with the label attached is the entry. State Bell Ringer certificates will only be furnished for those animals for which an entry (i.e. picture) was sent to the National Office and which met all qualification requirements. Juniors living in states that do not hold state contests should send their entries directly to the national office. JUDGING AND AWARDS The State Bell Ringers and the Reserve State Bell Ringers will be recognized in the January issue of the Brown Swiss Bulletin. Each state is responsible for contacting the Bulletin if they want their state winners published. Owners of the State and Reserve Bell Ringers will be awarded certificates by the corresponding State Brown Swiss Association. The National Bell Ringers and a Reserve winner will be selected in each class. An Honorable Mention can be awarded in a class at the judges’ discretion. Winners will be chosen by a committee of three judges; one from each of the two largest National Junior Shows and a third judge chosen from one of the other National Shows on a rotational basis. Entries will be judged on pictures and Junior Show placings. The National Bell Ringer selections will receive a plaque and be published in the March issue of the Brown Swiss Bulletin. Submit by National Deadline: December 1 1 Professional Color 5X7 photo. 2 Completed sticker attached to back of photo.
