pring planting is done or finishing up in most parts of the country and first cutting forage is being harvested. In some areas second cutting is not far from ready. Before we know it, it will be the end of June and that means many will be preparing to travel to the annual Swiss convention in Minnesota the first full week of July. One is sure to enjoy the few days of fellowship with other breeders. I hope all your travels are safe and that you take time to stop and see Swiss breeders on your way or going home. The Board of Directors will be meeting from the evening of July 4 through Wednesday morning. If you have an item or concern you would like to bring forward to be discussed, please let your director know or feel free to contact the office and it will be added to the agenda. The genetic, show, and type committees will have conference calls before the board meetings and items from each will be brought forward if deemed necessary by the committee. As you read this issue of the Bulletin, take time to read about the Brown Swiss youth that are participating in the programs and contests made available to them through the junior programs of your association. Since the beginning of 2012, the Youth Program has been solely supported by donations from individuals/companies and funds raised from the Annual Fun Auction held every year during the convention. The Fun Auction is the largest contributor to the Youth Program every year. It is a great evening of fun and laughs while benefitting the youth and the future of their programs. Regardless if you consign, bid, buy, or just enjoy the laughs and good times of this special evening, your support for the National Youth program is greatly appreciated and makes the future bright for Brown Swiss Youth. Remember, when you support the youth of your breed, you guarantee the foundation you have laid before them will be continued. This issue also highlights those Living Lifetime producers and All Time Top 10 cows in the breed. It is an impressive group of cows with outstanding numbers. The newest Honor Roll members are highlighted this month too. As I mentioned last month, despite the lower mik prices, these are the type of cows that pay the bills with both quantity and quality! A reminder that the next issue of the Bulletin will be published the end of July/first of August. Also published at that time will be a new National Directory. See more on this on page 28. Until next time, ~David

AMBASSADOR FINALISTS

The National Youth Ambassador supports and promotes the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders’ Association and national programs. The Ambassador and an alternate will be chosen at the National Convention. Christy Achen is from Warner, South Dakota, and is the daughter of Craig and Cindy Achen. She and her siblings all work together on their 2000-cow dairy. They include Jessica, Emily, Jacob, Rachel, Roxann, Annie, Nicholas, John, Jack and Joseph. Christy states, “I have been involved with Brown Swiss cattle since I started milking them at the age of five. My first show calf was a Brown Swiss spring calf that I picked out over our Holstein and Milking Shorthorn calves. I have since purchased my own Brown Swiss to grow my herd. My involvement has been at the local, state, and national level in the Brown Swiss breed as well as in the Holstein breed. In the future I want to help feed the world and be a dairy farmer. I enjoy my family, friends and dairy cows.” Lauren Almasy is from Hubbard, Ohio. She is a junior at Hubbard High School. Lauren works part-time at Cannon Dairy Farm and this summer will be interning for the American Dairy Association-Mideast at the Ohio State Fair. Lauren says, “After owning and showing other breeds of cattle, I chose to raise Brown Swiss dairy cattle and purchased my first Brown Swiss heifer in 2013. I am a junior member of the National Brown Swiss Association and the Ohio Brown Swiss Association. I have shown Brown Swiss at our county fair, Spring Dairy Expo and the All American Dairy Show. I participated in junior showmanship with a Brown Swiss at the World Dairy Expo this year. I also attended the Brown Swiss National Convention last year. I participated in the stand-up poster contest and photo contest. I participated in the Youth Junior Achievement contest last year and was the winner for District III. I am the 2015 Ohio Brown Swiss Queen and am on the Ohio committee for food and decorations for the National Convention in 2017.” Currently a junior agricultural communications major at Tarleton State University, Morgan Cavitt was born and raised on her family’s farm in rural Erath County, Texas. She is the 19-year-old daughter of Barry and Paulette Cavitt of Stephenville, Texas. Morgan has earned a spot on the Dean’s List each semester. While in college she is working on campus, performing with multiple instruments in three of Tarleton’s top bands and competing as a member of Tarleton’s Dairy Judging Team. Her love and passion for dairy cattle, the dairy industry and the Brown Swiss breed began at an early age. With the support of her parents and a local dairy family, she raised and showed her first dairy heifer at the age of nine, immediately igniting a life-long passion. Exhibiting her Brown Swiss at the International Brown Swiss Show, earning a top 10 placing in showmanship, and judging in the National 4-H Contest at 2011 World Dairy Expo have been some of her most memorable moments. Morgan represented the Texas State Brown Swiss Association in 2009-2010 as the Texas State Swiss Miss and hopes to once again represent and promote the Brown Swiss breed as Youth Ambassador. She is looking forward to completion of her education in agricultural communications and to her future career in the dairy industry with hopes of also someday owning and operating an all-Brown Swiss dairy. Elise Regusci is the 18-year-old daughter of Central Valley farmers John and Carol Regusci of Modesto, California. She is attending California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and majoring in Dairy Science. At Cal Poly, she is a member of the Los Lecheros Dairy Club and the Dairy Judging Team. In addition, she is involved in a few Christian groups on campus including SLO Cru and Branded, which is an agriculture ministry on campus. During high school she participated in varsity athletics and is a lifetime member of the California Scholarship Federation. She participated in Dairy Bowl and Dairy Jeopardy at the state and national levels with the California Junior Holstein Association and was a part of two national winning Dairy Bowl teams. She has been showing Brown Swiss, Holsteins and Red and Whites for the past 10 years at shows in California and at the World Dairy Expo. All in all, growing up in the agriculture industry she has developed a love for the dairy cow, science and educating the public about production agriculture. Eventually her plan is to return to the Central Valley in California and start a Holstein and Brown Swiss dairy with her brother and sister. She would like to thank her mentors, parents and siblings for their support in getting her where she is today. Nicole Wright is the daughter of Mark and Linda Wright and lives on a 300 acre, 100head registered Holstein dairy farm in Johnson Creek, Wisconsin. She has one sister Kayla. Nicole has been involved in the Brown Swiss Association for nine years and currently owns six head of Brown Swiss. Nicole reigned as the Wisconsin Brown Swiss Queen in 2013, traveling around the state promoting the Brown Swiss breed and the dairy industry. In addition, she has attended state and national conventions earning The Nelson McCammon and Brown Swiss Youth Achievement (runner-up) award in 2014 and the 2010 intermediate showmanship contest and Reserve Bred & Owned Swiss heifer in 2013. A member of the Watertown FFA, Nikki has been active in dairy judging, was a National Finalist for Dairy Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency, Wisconsin State Farmer Finalist, star Greenhand, star Chapter Farmer and served as the Chapter President. Nikki is also active in the Junior Holstein Association. She is a graduate of the UW-Madison Farm and Industry Short Course where she served as the Campus Ambassador, a dairy judging team member and served on several committees. Having a passion for the dairy industry, Nikki wants to continue to develop her Brown Swiss herd to someday earn some All-American nominations and merchandize cattle with high genomics.

2015 NATIONAL CHEESE YIELD WINNERS

The Cheese Yield contest honors the junior members whose cows produce the highest cheese yield during a 30-day period. This program emphasizes the fact that Brown Swiss milk is ideal for cheese-making due to its high protein content and ideal fat-to-protein ratio. Since many dairymen are paid on component-merit basis, this program exemplifies the value of the Brown Swiss milk. There were 16 contestants this year. The overall winner is recognized at the national convention and receives a $100 cash award.

My year as the Brown Swiss youth ambassador is quickly coming to an end, and what a year it was. As I reflect back on my year I am overjoyed with the opportunities I was able to be a part of and humbled by the people I met. Throughout this year, one word continued to pop up as a new experience was presented: passion. In the past 365 days (almost), I was able to meet some of the best breeders in the country, and might I add, the world, who helped fuel my passion for our beloved breed even more. While attending the World Dairy Expo, I was emerged in a world of culture as I was presented with the opportunity to speak with Brown Swiss breeders from their home country of Switzerland. It was an amazing experience to share stories of our own herds, but it was evident that the passion extends from border to border. From show to show, I realized the trend continued. There is nothing quite like the passion that our Brown Swiss family has for our breed. While attending numerous shows from The Pennsylvania Farm Show to All- American and, of course, The World Dairy Expo, Shelby and I made a full circle. I am forever thankful that I was able to spend the year traveling with Shelby and sharing our passion with everyone who would listen and everyone who would share with us. We thank the Brown Swiss breeders from coast to coast for allowing us to have this opportunity to represent the Big Brown Cow. As for me, my year as the Brown Swiss Ambassador may be coming to an end, but this is just the beginning. I have a lifetime of supporting and advocating for the Brown Swiss cow ahead of me. I look forward to seeing you all at National Convention and for years to come in the show ring! -Michala Kuhlman 2015-2016 National Brown Swiss Ambassador

Sales MID-ATLANTIC CALF SALE

Pictured (L-R): Cindy Warner - buyer and sale committee and Dennis Smith- sale committee, and Jessica Martin at the halter. In the box is Wayne Sliker on the left - pedigrees, and Denny Remsburg- Auctioneer.

By: Cynthia L. Warner The Mid-Atlantic Brown Swiss Calf sale celebrated its 42nd year with another good spring sale. Consignors and buyers were met by a nice springtime day at the Frederick Fairgrounds, Frederick, Maryland. The Sale saw 26 head of “typey” calves with excellent pedigrees go through the ring and sell for an average of $2,100, of which eight were March calves. A unique and interesting fact is that the sale is small in numbers—but calves sold to nine different states—only five stayed in Maryland. Nine calves were sent to Pennsylvania, five to Virginia, two to New Jersey and one each going to Connecticut, New York, North Carolina, Kansas and Vermont. This sale has quite a following and reputation so the sale committee congratulates new buyers, as well as repeat buyers. Topping the sale at $4,500 was a very correct and stylish December calf ready to show this summer and get to the big fall shows! Rad-ical Goliath Good Luck is sired by Goliath and is out of a two-year-old Bonanza, then Top Acres Gaiety “2E92” with All-American credentials to her name. Next dam is Gredel “5E94” with All American honors through the years. This consignment is backed by a strong maternal line and has lots of potential. Good Luck sold to Terri Packard, Jenny Trapp, and Cindy Warner, Frederick, Maryland, and was the consignment of Lindsey Rucks, Okeechobee, Florida. The second-high seller of the day was Top Acres HP Peppy Glow selling for $4,400. She is a tall, dark and long calf who can take the competition in the Fall Calf class. This stylish September calf is sired by Chilli Pepper and out of Bo Joy Ensign Gloria “2E93” with All American nominations. Next dam is Gretchen. She was the purchase of Larry Geiwitz, Volant, Pennsylvania, and consigned by Top Acres and Hillpoint Partners, St. Paris, Ohio. Look for her in the show ring this year! The third-high selling animal was a great September Grandslam with great lines and 22

deep body. Top Acres GS Snapple sold for $3,800. Her dam is Seigerts Jetway Sable “2E91,” then Shila “2E93,” and back to the famous Snowstorm family. This deep maternal line has been making the right kind for decades! There are generations of Excellent dams and All Americans in this cow family. Snapple sold to Richard Sharer, Laceyville, Pennsylvania, a new buyer at this year’s sale. She was the consignment of Wayne Sliker, St. Paris, Ohio. Cutting Edge T Brook ET sold for $3,200 to another new buyer, Patrick Kennedy, Cornwall, Connecticut. This nice September Teaton is out of an “EX-90” Supreme dam. The granddam is the famous Top Acres Pre Bouquet “3E94” with All American honors and nominations. This deep and strong maternal line has many generations of excellence in the pedigrees. She was the consignment of Ken Main and Peter Vail, Copake, New York. Two lots sold for fifth-high sellers at $3,000 each. The first was Random Luck B Priscilla ET, sold to Richard Sharer, Laceyville, Pennsylvania. Priscilla was a Bonanza backed by five generations of Excellent dams and was a June 2015 heifer. She was consigned by Ken Main and Peter Vail, Copake, New York. Also selling for $3000 was Dublin Hills Gib Sashay ET, a June 2015 heifer sired by Blessing Mort Garbro Gib, and out of Dublin Hills Sasha “4E93,” one of the great cows of the breed. This heifer is a potential ninth generation Excellent. She was the consignment of Jeff True, Perry, New York, and makes her new home with Darren Benfer, Longford, Kansas. Another highlight of the sale was the Youth Fun Auction which starts the sale. Bidding was brisk on many items and topping the sale at $600 was a lovely basket filled with various items and assembled by Bonnie Remsberg. This basket was sold to benefit Tyler McDonald, the son of Jeremy and Missy McDonald, Stephens City, Virginia. Our good friend and fellow breeder Jeremy was lost tragically in a farm accident in December 2015. The basket was donated by the Maryland Brown Swiss Association and bought by the Rucks family, Okeechobee, Florida; Cindy Warner, Frederick, Maryland, and Tom and Bonnie Remsberg, Middletown, Maryland. The Mid Atlantic Brown Swiss Calf Sale is managed by the Maryland Brown Swiss Association and is the major fundraiser for supporting shows, youth programs, scholarships, and sponsorships. The auctioneer for the sale was Denny Remsburg, while Wayne Sliker read pedigrees. Emmy Heffner and Jennifer Martin clerked the sale with assistance from Emmy Covell, who ran sales slips. Brown Swiss members and junior members were instrumental in helping in the barn and on sale day. Brown Swiss Bulletin

Sales THE BREEDER’S TOUCH SALE

Pictured (L-R): Lee Barber, sales staff; Ken Main, buyer; Brian Garrison, sales staff; Kathi Brown-Meier on the halter; Laurie, Jeannie, John Winkelman, consignors; In the box is Wayne Sliker, pedigrees and Darrell Worden, auctioneer.

A one-of-a-kind sale took place on April 23 in Columbia City, Indiana. Hosted by Blessing Farms, the sale boasted an average of $5,552 on 77 head that sold to 16 states, British Columbia and Ontario, Canada. Ten lots sold over $10,000. “We were pleased with the participation in The Breeder’s Touch Sale. The first ‘must’ in any successful offering is the highest level of consignments obtainable. We are proud to have enjoyed the support of all the Active Master Breeder Award winners as well as other leading breeders of today,” said sale manager Wayne Sliker. Topping the sale at $23,000 was the beautiful Twinkle-Hill Cadence Oakley, a Shiloh Brookings Cadence daughter that sold fresh at 1-11 and milking 72 lbs. She sold bred to Norwin and under AI contract with New Generation Genetics. Scored ‘VG85’ she is backed by six generations of Excellent dams, including the Superior Brood Cows Priscilla, Peggy and Paulene! Consigned by the Winkelmans of Watertown, Wisconsin, she was purchased by Ken Main and Peter Vail of Copake, New York. A very special offering from Ferme Brown Heaven of Vercheres, Quebec, Canada, sold in absentia. Brown Heaven Bloom Bublegum ET, the Reserve All-American Spring Calf, brought the gavel down at $19,000 to the Donaldsons of Bradner Farms, British Columbia, who purchased the heifer via the internet on cowbuyer.com. A small case of ringworm kept the calf from crossing the border, but did not dampen the bidding for the # 1 heifer for Type in Canada. Bublegum is a Scherma Glenn Blooming ET *TM daughter out of two Excellent high-producing dams. Built just like her mother, Cutting Edge C Kitty ET sold to Richard Love of Pennsylvania for $14,500. This December 2015 Carter daughter of the breed’s first 95-point cow, Eloc Wagor Kandid will be ready to hit the tanbark this summer. She was consigned by Ken Main and Peter Vail.
