he time has come to make your plans to attend the 2016 National Convention hosted by the Minnesota Brown Swiss Breeders beginning July 6 and ending with the M & M Memorial Youth Heifer Show on July 9. The schedule on page 8 has something for all and looks like everyone can see some great Brown Swiss cattle as well. The Minnesota breeders have put countless hours into planning and seeing that every detail has been covered to ensure you have a great time during your stay in Owatonna, Minnesota. When traveling to the convention regardless of the direction you will be coming from, there are always Brown Swiss farms to stop and visit. Nothing is more rewarding than to have a fellow breeder stop and visit your farm and view your herd. Take advantage of the opportunity to see some additional operations and cattle. Although the milk prices are far from good, the Brown Swiss sale averages have remained strong as evidenced by sale reports on page 22. As in the past, when milk prices are low, Brown Swiss hold their value better than other breeds. Swiss components still put milk at a higher price per hundred weight. There are more sales in the near future and I hope to continue to see the strong demand for Swiss genetics continue. Also, have you noticed new buyers investing into the breed? This is the result of you the breeder, promoting your Swiss cows and why they are profitable to the masses. Remember to make plans to attend your National Convention. Enjoy a few days seeing great Swiss cows while enjoying the wonderful breeders of Minnesota and fellow breeders from across the country. Until Next Month ~David

Breeders Welcome You! Submitted by Deb Johnson Clover Glen Farms in Claremont, Minnesota, will host the Welcome to Minneosta Nice! dinner on Wednesday evening as the kick off to this year’s National Convention. Glenn and Deb Johnson are pleased to wel-

leadership where they can in the dairy industry. The Johnson’s have been honored for milk quality through their association with AMPI and most recently received a youth development award from Steele County Dairy Association for Clover Glen’s work with the Cow Camp Program.

come all convention attendees to their farm. Clover Glen Farms relocated to Claremont (Steele Co.) in 1993. The move to Steele Co. was an intentional migration to where the dairy industry infrastructure remained strong following the ag crisis of the 1980s. The Johnsons lease 180 crop acres and grow their own inputs. Alfalfa is regularly purchased to ensure a steady supply of quality forage for the milking herd. Commodities are purchased in bulk and grain rations are mixed right on the farm. Seventy cows are currently in milk. An equal number of heifers are also raised on the farm. Consultants play a vital role of the daily and long-range planning in the operation. A dairy nutritionist, farm business specialist, veterinarian and agronomist are an important part of the success the operation has experienced. A Dairy Advisory Project was deployed by the Johnsons in 1997 and laid the groundwork for capital improvements to aging facilities that were no longer cow or operator friendly. An expansion project to grow cow numbers in 2010 included the addition of the Brown Swiss breed. The Dutch Valley Brown Swiss herd of Kyle and Wanda VanHouweling of Prairie City, Iowa, came as a group to the farm. Brown Swiss have also been purchased from South Dakota State University and a number of Minnesota breeders through the Minnesota Brown Swiss Association’s annual fall State Sale. Additionally, Clover Glen is currently home to EL Dairy Brown Swiss owned by Matthew Laubach and Katie Elvejhem, formerly of Elkton, South Dakota, and recently relocated to Glenwood, Minnesota. Clover Glen provides “foster care” to dairy producers who need time to work through life situations without the challenges and stress of managing a dairy herd. To date, Clover Glen has hosted five different dairy herds. Clover Glen is also very proud of its work with the Steele Co. ADA and Owatonna Community Education to host “Cow Camp.” “Cow Camp” began in 2008 with seven students. Today, over 146 young people have enrolled in both Rookie and Pro Camps, with 14 students enrolling in 4-H to pursue the Dairy Project. The camps have an annual waiting list and have hosted children from as far away as Florida. 4-H’ers continue to lease animals from Clover Glen as 4-H projects. New in 2016 is the addition of Amber Rae Swiss (Ron and Michelle Heins & Family of Eyota, MN) as providers of 4-H and National Brown Swiss leases for young people participating in the Cow Camp Program. The entire team at Clover Glen works hard to produce quality dairy products, present a positive image for Steele Co. agriculture, and provide

Submitted by Lori Read WELCOME TO READS BROWN SWISS DAIRY FARM! Here are some interesting facts about this farm and its owners: Roger and Lori Read began this dairy herd with two cows purchased from Mile Away Swiss in Wisconsin and a bull named X-Cell-O Lancelot Bert from Doug and Jeanne Tuman. These animals played a major role in their beginning herd and the bull sired their first two Excellent cows: Reads Bert Bridget and Reads Bert Summer. In 1989, they purchased his parents’ (James and Juanita Read) herd of 32 cows, most of which were registered Brown Swiss and rented the farm site. Roger and Lori purchased the farm site in 1995 and remodeled a 1967 hay shed into a freestall barn with manure containment. In 1999, they remodeled the barn into a double-six herringbone milking parlor and added a holding pen. In October of 2005, an addition to the freestall barn and updated milk house were completed. The addition is a bedded pack using soybean, and barley straws along with corn stover as bedding. The next process was monitoring their cattle through the use of SCR’s Cow Monitoring System. This has really improved reproduction and overall herd health. In 2014, due to the aging structure, the original freestall building was torn down, and a monoslope barn replaced it providing better coverage for housing and feeding dry cows and pregnant heifers and housing the new freestalls designed to better fit the cows and, of course, the continued use of water beds in those stalls completed that building. Most recently they have added a robotic feed pusher to their system. They are currently milking 120 cows along with approximately 140 youngstock at various ages divided between the two farm-sites. The farm consists of 320 acres of farmland with the crops being corn, soybeans, alfalfa, and contract foundation seed barley. The farm has been part of the University of Minnesota Manure Management study, and both facilities have feedlot permits and manure management plans. Crop farming uses a five-year crop rotation and has been part of the Soil and Water Conservation program for over 60 years. Their son, Greg, and his wife, Heather, live at the dairy farm in the recently remodeled home. Greg helps with the crops, does custom baling, and works off the farm. Heather, a radiological technician, also helps whenever and wherever a hand is needed and is responsible for managing the very active 4-H leasing program. Lori and Roger live 1.5 miles away and house young stock on that farm. The farm has one full-time employee and four seasonal part-time employees who are essential to the success of the farm. Roger and Lori have been very active in the Minnesota Brown Swiss Organization, with Roger a past president, Lori a former secretary, serving as hospitality chairs for the 2004 National Brown Swiss Conven-

tion, and they co-chaired the 2006 Minnesota All Breeds Convention. Lori recently chaired the 2013 Minnesota All Breeds Convention and they are active in the MN PDCA and All Breeds activities. Lori and Roger are cochairs of the 2016 National Convention. They have been active in the Mower County American Dairy Association, and still are dairy project leaders for Mower County 4-H. Lori works off the farm as a consultant for three electric utilities. They also have a daughter, Bethany, who is married to Kris Folland and they live in Halma, Minnesota. She is a busy mother to four children, Jazlynn, Isaac, McKinley and Track. She is active as a 4-H leader, and together with Kris, who is the NW Supervisor for Minnesota Crop Improvement, they farm about 1,600 acres along with a 200 cow-calf operation. And, when she has time, she runs! IT’S ALL ABOUT THE COWS! Reads’ 120-cow dairy herd consists of Registered Brown Swiss, a few Swiss-Holstein crosses and Holsteins. They do not use rGBH or BST and the milk is processed by Foremost Farms. The cows are on MN DHIA testing and are fed a Total Mixed Ration of corn silage, hay, haylage, high moisture corn, distiller’s grain, and a Reads Driver Kannon *TM purchased protein blend. The herd won the National Brown Swiss Progressive Genetic Award for 2004 and 2014, and was a Brown Swiss Genetic Honor Herd every year from 2002-2014. Special Excellent cows include Bridget, Shelby, Summer, Promise, Sunny, Kayla, Kaylee, Shellyn, Ally (aka Bella) and some close Very Good cows are Viola, Diana, Dayna, Kylie, Shelly, and Margo! The Reads have many animals making the 300 PPR Cow Listing and 100 PPR Genomic Heifer Listing. Roger and Lori believe that the best genetics lay in the future and use mainly the Young Sire Programs. Reads Beamer Kayla came from this type of breeding program. They look at young sires that have high milk production and components along with NM$ and then type, but continue to strive for herd longevity, mobility, and strength. Frail animals do not survive in a freestall/commercial operation. Roger and Lori are incredibly proud of the success of Reads Driver Kannon *TM who is ranked as the #1 NM$ bull and PPR Available Proven US Sire since December of 2014. They can track the genetics all the way back to Reads Mercedes Shelby, who was also one of their home bred Excellent cows. They also look forward to new sires taking over that spot, because it spells success for the breed. Reads Brown Swiss has started genomic testing to their genetic youngstock herd program. They believe that Lifetime NM$ is a valuable tool for the Brown Swiss breed and while it is not part of the current genetics program for the breed, feel that its consistency and characteristics used by other breeds have proved its value. The Midwest Revue Sale was held on March 31 at the Ohio State Fairgrounds in Columbus, Ohio, in conjunction with the Spring Dairy Expo. The sale averaged $4,130 on 46 head. Cattle sold to eight states and Canada. A number of the sale cattle were shown in the Brown Swiss Show Friday evening with pleasing results including the Junior Champion of the Jr. Show and Res. Jr. Champion of the open show for her new owner, William Hughes of Killbuck, Ohio. The winning heifer, Top Acres Braiden Winzit ET, was high seller in The Revue at $17,000 and is a fall calf by Braiden from the 2x Madison Reserve Champion, Top Acres Supreme Wizard ET, consigned by Top Acres, St. Paris, Ohio. Second-high seller was Top Acres Garbro Wave OCS ET at $14,100 to Ken Main and Peter Vail of Elite Dairy, Copake, New York. She was a March ’15 Tanbark out of the ‘2E91’ Round Hill Pre Wishful ET. She was consigned by Top Acres, Garbro Swiss and Hillpoint Partners. Contending bidders were Ayars and Manion of Mechanicsburg, Ohio. The Springtime Sale had a very respectable average of $2,570 on 63 head going to nine states and Canada. Thirty head were open heifers and calves. The sale was held on April 2 in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, and was managed by Brown Swiss Sale Service LLC of Lake Mills, Wisconsin. The weather sale morning was a very odd mix that went from white-out conditions to clear sunny skies and back again. This went on well into the afternoon. The high seller was a bred heifer, Cozy Nook Brkgs Terrific ET that topped the offerings at $5,600 and sold to Triangle Acres Farm, Freeport, Illinois. Terrific is a Brookings from Cozy Nook Pronto Twylight ‘3E92/93MS.’ She has 14 sons and grandsons in A.I. Consignors were Cozy Nook Farm, Tom & Joan Oberhaus, Waukesha, WI. Next in line at $5,200 was Cutting Edge S Willow, a March 2015 Supreme from Top Brown Swiss Bulletin

The 2016 Kentucky National Brown Swiss Show and Sale went down as a huge success. The sale boasted an average of $2,681 on 36 lots. Animals were sold to 10 states. The Sale was managed by Fairdale Farm LLC, with Lynn Lee serving as the auctioneer and Wayne Sliker reading pedigrees. Terry Trowbridge, Jared Major and Leonard Johnson accepted bidding. The sale crew consisted of Matt Manery, Josh Jones, Rob Landgraf, Jamie Ozburn. Tyler Buckley, Bob Walraven and Joe, Ben & Kirby Sparrow. High seller of the day was Hills Valley R Whistle ET, the consignment of Hills Val-

ley LLC, New York. She sold to Elise and Elisabeth Regusci of California for a price of $7,500. Contending bidders were a partnership of Saltzman Cavern View Farms, Ohio, and Buckmeadow Holsteins, Kentucky. Whistle is out of a Supreme daughter of Frosted Sieg Wammy ET ‘2E93.’ An interesting note on Whistle-her dam topped the sale two years ago and her granddam was a high-seller seven years ago --- it is a family tradition. Second-high seller was a Summer Yearling for the BIG Time, Niermans Durham Rhoda, consigned by Ryland Nierman, Indiana. She commanded a price of $5,750 and sold to Todd Hoesly, Wisconsin, with Fairdale & Dr. Megan Taylor as the contending bidders. Rhoda is a Durham granddaughter of Round Hill Prem Fiesta ET ‘3E92.’

Third high of the day was a fancy Fall Calf from Top Acres, Top Acres GS Salute ET. She is a Grandslam daughter out of ‘2E91’ Jetway out of the Snowstorm family. She sold to New View Swiss, John and Bonnie Ayars and Dr. Kenny Joe Manion, Ohio & Kentucky, with Alicia Lamb, Tennessee, as the contending bidder.
