his year, World Dairy Expo will be celebrating 50 years and Brown Swiss have a lot of history involved in those years. Did you know Brown Swiss was the first breed to have a National Show at World Dairy Expo? There have been four Supreme Champions named from the Brown Swiss Show at Madison. In 1988, Lyndale Convincer Elaine became the first Brown Swiss to be named Supreme Champion over all breeds at World Dairy Expo. In 1989, Elaine returned to repeat the honor. In 1994, Hoosier Knoll Jade Monay became the second Brown Swiss to be named Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo. In 2003, Old Mill Snickerdoodle OCS became the third Brown Swiss to be named Supreme Champion and she also won Reserve Supreme Champion in 2008 and 2009. Will a Brown Swiss be named Supreme Champion in 2016? Brown Swiss breeders and exhibitors have always made the Brown Swiss show one of the best breed shows year after year at Expo. Notice around the ringside the interest from people from other breeds who watch the Swiss show? Many of those are purchasing Swiss not only to show, but to have and breed. The Alliant Center starts to fill with spectactors as the class winners parade across the color shavings and the selection of the Champions takes place. You can hear many say the Brown Swiss Champion process is the most spectacular of all the breed shows with the colored milking shirts, music and bells. The pageantry with the Alphorns and Swiss yodelers emphasizes the rich heritage of our breed. The Brown Swiss booth is on the lower level as always for you to visit. Take time to meet the staff that works for the Association. These are the people behind the scenes that make it work. Also come meet the new Superintendent of Records, Stephanie Miranda. Stephanie officially starts her position October 1.

Until next month,

David

a Rainbow Farms is located in the heart of a competitive dairy area in western Ohio. It is where two brothers are working together on a farm steeped in history pursuing a passion with the dairy cow. Brian and Blair Lammers are the fourth generation of dairy farmers, with children following closely in their footsteps. Their story begins on a small farm in New Knoxville, Ohio. Brian posted on his Facebook page at the New Year: “We begin our 98th year with the Big Brown Cow. Fred Lammers started with a Brown Swiss bull and a few cows in 1918. Many area farmers liked Fred’s bulls and had him bring one of his bulls to their farm to breed their cows and heifers in the 20s and 30s. Fred’s son, Silas, began showing his Brown Swiss at the county fair in the 20s and the Ohio State Fair in 1939. In the 50s he traveled by railroad box car with the La Rainbow show string to Waterloo, Iowa, and San Francisco, California. Fred’s grandson, Dennis, worked with the Lee’s Hill show string in the late 50s for two seasons. Dennis was best known for breeding the Butterfly cow family.” Today’s dairy operation is a bit different from the previous generations. Brian is a nutritionist for ADM, so he handles the nutrition analysis for the herd and mates and owns the Brown Swiss. Blair, who owns the home farm, handles the responsibilities of the management of the entire milking herd and producing feed, as well as mating and ownership of all the Holsteins. Their mother, Marlene, lives on one of the farms Brian has purchased, where heifers are raised. Brian lives a few miles down the road from the main farm on ground his grandfather Silas purchased many, many years ago. The Swiss calves are raised

in hutches in his back yard with the help of his wife Maria and son, Ben. Ben also helps milk at his uncle’s and with other farm duties. Brian’s daughters, Alexa and Tori, help show at the fairs. The milking herd of 100 cows is housed in a freestall barn that was built 15 years ago. Blair has made continuous improvements since completing a dairy science degree at The Ohio State University and taking over the home farm. He focuses his attention on running a productive, efficient dairy and raising crops to provide a high forage diet that consists currently of wheatlage, ryelage and corn silage. Roughly 270 acres is farmed year-round with cover crops and double crops. Blair says, “I use every hour of sun to its full potential to be efficient.” He also concentrates heavily on the SCC of the herd. “I never give up on the SCC – it is something I work at daily.” His wife, Beth, handles the bookkeeping for their dairy. They have three young children that are just entering showing age. The RHA on the Holsteins is 25,175M 1,007F 809P and the Swiss are just as competitive with a RHA of 22,578M 997F 785P. “We get paid on the pounds of fat and protein that goes on the milk truck,” says Brian, “so the components are key.” Both breeds are housed together in the barns and treated equally. Brian graduated from Ohio State with a B.S. in Dairy Science and received a Ph. D in Animal Science from Penn State. Along with

managing the nutritional aspect of the herd, he has the Brown Swiss herd on an extensive IVF and embryo flushing program. His wife Maria and son Ben are instrumental in giving synchronization shots to both the donors and recipients as well as helping feed calves three times a day: 6 a.m., 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. “We have a demand for Brown Swiss bulls and daughters because our Swiss rank well for type, PPR, Cheese Merit and Productive Life. We put four bulls into stud in the last two years and we have a fifth going in, pending the contract signing.” Their recent sale of a high genomic heifer, La Rainbow Sweet Reality, in the Breeder’s Touch sale this past spring was evidence of the demand. She was purchased by Sexing Technologies. A young bull, La Rainbow Bfly DynamiteETV 14BS393, at Accelerated, is tied for first for PTAT at +1.4 on the genomic young sire list. He has a PPR of +147, +406 CM$ and +4.8 PL. He is a Cadence son from a December 2013 Durham with a genomic NM$ of +210 and plus deviations. The next dam is Very Good and all of these trace back to La Rainbow Butterfly ET. Scored ‘3E93,’ she was a Forest Lawn T J Rhythm daughter that had multiple show winnings to her name and multiple records over 28,000M 1,000F and 930P. Her lifetime credits were 143,200M 5,641F 4,923P. She is backed by a ‘3E90’ dam with over 163,800M. Another young bull at Accelerated is from the Sweet family. La Rainbow Sweet Brutus *TM is +135PPR, +375CM$, +2.0 PL and +1.1 PTAT on the genomic list. He is a Bosephus son out of an ‘EX91’ Zeus daughter with multiple records over 26,000M 1,000F and up to 1,023P. Her dam is ‘VG89’ with similar milk records. Another Sweet member, La Rainbow Sw Bodacious ETV is +132PPR +382 CM$ +5.6PL and +1.1 PTAT. He is a Sunny Acres Trace Deegan son out of two Very Good dams with projected or high components. One of the highest ranking PTAT young heifers on the genomic list is La Rainbow Sweet Silk ETV, a Cadence daughter born June 2015 with a +1.4 PTAT, +840M +335NM$ and +142 PPR. She is out of a young Durham two-

year-old with a 4.9% butterfat test out of an 87-point dam with records to 23,280M 4.3% 1,011F 3.6% 830P. The Sweet family traces back to La Rainbow Sweet Cherish, a ‘3E90’ Lar-le Stretch Titan OCS daughter bred by Brian. She produced over 180,400M 8,050F 6,175P in nine lactations. She is backed by two multiple ‘E’ cows from the Vel-Geen herd. Brian genomic tests all his Brown Swiss females and most of the bull calves born. “Genomics allows me to do three things: 1) identify the ranking of females to determine which ones to do embryo work on; 2) determine which ones to breed; 3) determine which ones to be recipients. Then I also use it to better mate animals. For example, an animal that has poor udder composites can be mated with a bull that is strong in udder composites to provide a better mating – it is more accurate than visual evaluation. I look at all the traits – components, PL, and more - to correct those traits.” Brian maintains a huge emphasis on type, components and productive life. “Our goal is to breed Component Merit cows – cows that can show, have a long productive life, be highly profitable in the barn at home and compete in the show ring with other high performance cows. Component Merit cows have a high component yield, long productive lives, type and show quality.” It shows in both the herd and show ring. La Rainbow Farms has been awarded the Brown Swiss Premier Breeder banner throughout all three generations at the Ohio State Fair. “Part of our goal is to win with our own breeding versus purchasing show winners,” said Brian.

They have won the coveted banner six out of the last eight years at the Ohio State Fair. This past month they not only won the Premier Breeder banner but also the Production Award banner with their Component Merit cow that was third in a very competitive class. La Rainbow Sweet Vision ‘2E90’ is a Wonderment with 4-03 365D 37,610M 4.1% 1,527F 3.0% 1,147P. She is backed by two Excellent dams, one of which was the Component Merit Cow at the Southeast National Show in Louisville, Kentucky in 2002. Another Sweet family member won the 2013 All-American Brown Swiss Futurity at the Ohio State Fair. La Rainbow Sweet Milan ‘VG87’ is a Wonderment daughter with 1-11 365D 23,850M 4.6% 1,102F 3.7% 888P. She is backed by a 90-point dam with 31,990M 1,131F 1,078P. The next dam is Very Good with records to 31,260M 1,115F 1,009P. The third dam is also Very good with over 108,600M, also backed by the ‘2E92’ Component Merit Cow at the Southeast National Show. Brian has taken an aggressive role with genomics. “The genomic tested young sires are far superior than the proven bulls available – they offer greater advancements in genetic progress for profitability, component yield, type and productive life than proven sires.” He is currently using Brutus, Kannon and Deegan in the herd. When semen becomes available he plans to incorporate his two young sires, Bodacious and Dynamite, into the mating program as well. The Lammers’ contributions to the breed have not come from just their breeding pro-

gram. Silas was a National Director of the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders’ Association and Dennis served as president of the Ohio Brown Swiss Association. Brian is currently the president of the Ohio BSA and looking forward to seeing everyone in Ohio next year during the convention. “Our co-chairs, Sherri Smith and Renee Michalovich, and their committees are putting together some great things for next year that includes the Pro Football Hall of Fame, national junior heifer show and a tremendous sale. We have a great youth program with lots of participation. We always have a large number that show at both the Ohio State Fair and the National show in Cont. on pg. 8

Louisville.” Brian ended his Facebook post at the beginning of 2016 with the best summation of their plans and goals: “Today we look forward to what the Butterfly and Sweet cow families will do by producing daughters that will compete in the show ring, produce high volumes of fat and protein and have a long productive life. With six heifers in the top 60 U.S. genomic heifer list, we are confident that the Butterfly and Sweet girls will deliver on this quest.” Add in the sons of these cows and the family passion for excelling at what they do – it should result in success in the coming years for this current generation and the next.

National Office Hosts International Guests By Rebekah Bovee A group of eight Nicaraguan cattle experts, including cattle breeders/a milk cooperative director/an A.I. representative/and an Agricultural Specialist from USDA-FAS in Nicaragua, visited the Brown Swiss Association office on Friday, August 26, 2016, as part of a Cochran Fellowship activity, a program supported through USLGE and USDA-FAS. The training program was conducted by Martin Sieber, USLGE representative, assisted by a translator from Madison, Wisconsin. The group was in the US for both beef and dairy educational experience. Nicaragua has a tropical environment – 90-110 degrees in summer and humid. There are a lot of trees, however, and natural shade is the cooling system for their cattle. Beef, dairy, peanuts, and sugar cane are the main industries. About 60% of their national income derives from either beef or dairy cows. Nicaragua’s biggest export is beef. They also export cheese to other Central American countries. There are about five million head of beef and dairy cattle in Nicaragua, with 60-80% having varying levels of Brown Swiss in their genetics. Brown Swiss crossbreeding is prevalent with Brahman and Gyr. Including Brown Swiss genetics into the cattle population increased carcass weight 30 lbs. Cattle are mostly dual-purpose. The largest Brown Swiss herd has about 800 head. Average herd size is about 80-100 head. Breeders are still hand milking, and only about 5% use artificial insemination on their herds, the rest use herd bulls for natural service. There are two large milk co-ops in Nicaragua. The represented milk coop has 1300 members which includes about 130,000 cows. They are paid by milk quality and praised the value of Brown Swiss milk – especially the fat and protein levels of milk compared to Holstein for processed milk products.

Semen companies represented in Nicaragua are: Select Sires, Semex, Sexing Technologies, CRI, Accelerated, and New Generation Genetics. About 55% of cattle semen imported into Nicaragua is Brown Swiss. Breeders are interested in using some older genetics to catch up gradually to newer genetics. There is definite interest in importing bull calves. As genetics improve in the better herds, there will be a trickledown effect as bull calves are sold to neighboring ranches. There is a great deal of interest in conducting research on Brown Swiss/Gyr crosses and the group would encourage research by universities on animal health, adaptability to climate, longer productive life, and better feet & legs for grazing compared to Holsteins. Getting this type of research in print will benefit many breeders in the USA and all of Central America. The Brown Swiss Association staff were excited to welcome this enthusiastic group from Nicaragua and begin a relationship which could be advantageous to all.

By Robin Alden he Western National Brown Swiss Show was held Monday, July 18, 2016, as part of the California State Fair. Dean Dohle of Pleasant Hope, Missouri, served as the official. Thirty-seven head from across the state were exhibited. Two members of the Whizzbang family captured Junior Champion banners for their respective owners. Taking the Junior Champion prize was Top Acres HP B Wizer ETV, a Winter Yearling shown by Carol Regusci and Louis Oliveira of Modesto, California. Wizer is no stranger to those who follow the tanbark trail, placing well at several shows in 2015 and receiving the Reserve All-American Winter Calf title last year. She comes by her elite type naturally, being a Bonanza daughter of Top Acres Supreme Wizard ET ‘2E93,’ the Reserve All-American Five-Year-Old in 2015. Reserve Junior Champion went to Hills Valley R Whistle ET, the winning Winter Calf for Elise Regusci, also of Modesto. This Richard daughter is out of a ‘GP’ Supreme, then Frosted Sieg Wammy ET ‘2E93,’ two-time All-American. Blue Diamond PS Genevieve, the winning Junior Two-Year-Old, took home the Intermediate Champion banner for owner John Sagaria of Petaluma, California. Genevieve is a Power Surge daughter of a ‘VG87’ Starsky, then an ‘EX90’ Blue Chip from the Gredel family. Reserve Intermediate Champion was named TopDiMark Tbrk Just Dance ET, a Tanbark Senior Two-Year-Old out of Busy Bee Syndicate Jasper ‘2E93’ from the Idyl Wild Improver Jinx (M) family. 12

Senior and Grand Champion honors went to a pair of Aged Cows owned by sisters Elisabeth and Elise Regusci of Modesto. Grand was named TopDiMark Parker Frisky ET ‘2E90,’ a two-time All-American Nominee. She is a Parker daughter of a ‘VG88’ Payoff, another previous All-American Nominee. Busy Bee Syndicate Jasper followed in daughter Just Dance’s footsteps, being named Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion. The ‘3E94’ Zeus daughter was All-American FiveYear-Old in 2012, and as a four-year-old made nearly 30,000M with a 4.5% Fat. Jasper was also the winner of the Breed Champion Udder award at an impressive nine years of age. Elisabeth Regusci was named Premier Exhibitor, and John Paul Regusci Premier Breeder. Ambassador Alternate ~ Christy Achen Hello Brown Swiss breeders and enthusiasts!

I am the National Youth Alternate Ambassador. My name is Christy Achen and I am from the state of Kansas. My family owns and operates a feed yard and dairy farm in southwest Kansas. This includes my parents, Craig and Cindy Achen, along with my 10 siblings. I am 19 years old and transferred to Utah State this fall to study agriculture. My family got our start in the Brown Swiss breed back in 2002 when we purchased a herd of 20 grade Brown Swiss. We became a registered herd through the step-up program. The first heifer I owned was a Brown Swiss spring calf named Spice and the rest is history! I am happy to be an Ambassador for the awesome Brown Cow and look forward to meeting juniors and adults from around the country. If any juniors want to reach out for information or have ideas for conventions and shows, please contact Elise and myself through the National Brown Swiss Association Facebook page. I will be out at the Eastern National Show in Harrisburg so be sure to introduce yourself to me if you’re there! -Christy Achen, 2016-2017 National Brown Swiss Alternate Ambassador Elise Regusci, 2016-2017 National Brown Swiss Youth Ambassador

National Youth Advisor ~ Skyler DeGroft Greetings Brown Swiss Youth and Breeders! My name is Skyler DeGroft and I am excited to announce my new role as the Youth Advisor. Since my internship with the Association in 2014, I have been active on the Youth Committee and am always looking for ways to give back to the future of our breed, our Youth. I work for the Farm Service Agency as a Farm Loan Program Technician and milk on my family farm, Pine Spring Valley, where we milk 48 head of registered Brown Swiss and Jerseys. I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to grow our Youth Association and increase Youth participation in our national programs that are offered. If you have any ideas or concerns you would like addressed at the Youth Committee Meetings, please call me at 270-590-5881 or e-mail me at sdegroftbscba@gmail.com. I look forward to meeting all of you on the tanbark trail this fall! -Skyler DeGroft National Youth Advisor
