ongratulations to all the owners of All-American nominations and thank you to each and everyone who entered the contest. Many people who travel to other countries representing Brown Swiss always take Bulletins to distribute and this issue is by far the favorite. It not only has the nominations but also gets your farm in view of a market besides the domestic market. This issue and the April Bulletin are great marketing issues for your farm’s genetics, not only for foreign markets but also for your spring and early summer sale consignments. Advertise and let other breeders know what you have to offer the breed as well as what you might have for sale publicly or privately. The Progressive Young Sire Committee met and selected two bulls to enter the program for a Spring 2016 release. Northill Trace Haywire is a son of Cozy Nook Wonderment Trace TM and his dam is sired by Hilltop Acres H Driver. Northill Hazel Heather is scored ‘VG89’ with an Excellent-90 udder. She has a Dev: of +2675M +64F +63P over herdmates. Haywire is classified ‘VG87.’ His December 2015 Genomic breakdowns are PPR: +150, PTAT+0.8, PTA+ 190M, +34F, +18P, + 452NM$ 60%R PTA Pl: +5.6, DPR: +1.4. The second young sire is Double W Finnigan, sired by Manis Glenn Whiskey ET TM. His dam is CIE Double W EM Favor, ‘EX92’ with an Excellent-93 udder. Favor was the first place 4-year-old at the 2015 International Show and Southeast National. She is also nominated for All-American. Favor has records in excess of 23,000 for milk and plus 1,000 fat and 797 for protein. Finnigan’s December Genomics are PPR: +108, PTAT +.5, PTA: +668M, +31fF,+26P, +190NM$, 54%R, PTA Pl: -06, DPR: +1. Both of these young sires combine production and balanced, functional type. The Progressive Young Sire Program is another venue for testing Brown Swiss young sires and is a program of your Association. If you have questions concerning Progressive, or to place an order, please contact the Association. We will be accepting nominations for two more bulls to be selected for a September release. March 1st is fast approaching and that is the date for applications for many annual awards. One award that many seem to forget is the Young Breeder Award. There are many young Brown Swiss breeders that are under 40 who are very deserving of this award and need to be considered. Also juniors need to remember cheese yield and production award applications are due March 1st. Please check the website for applications. Until Next Month ~David

Hosting Sales from the Breeder’s Perspective It’s not as easy of a decision to have a sale as one thinks, according to those who have ventured into the world of sale hosting or dispersals. Roger Nierman commented that, “You second guess yourself. Are you doing the right thing financially, for the right reasons?” And successful sales revolve around key factors as well. Four breeders weigh in with their thoughts on hosting sales and the challenges and reasons that revolve around their decisions. Roger Nierman, Long Lane Farm, Brownstown, Indiana, Ken Main, along with Peter Vail, Mikey and Kyle Barton, milks 117 head of Brown Swiss with his son Brian. The Lynn, Tim Coon and crew make up the Elite Dairy in Cofirst Brown Swiss was purchased in 1945. pake, New York. Main has been involved with the dairy all his life. They currently milk 70 Brown Swiss cows with 175 total head. Steve Blessing of Blessing Farms, Fort Wayne, Indiana, have 145 head of Brown Swiss on test with 300 head total on the farm. Steve, his wife Rosy and brother Stan, along with one full-time employee, operate the farm that has been in the family for four generations. What sales have you hosted or if you are hosting a sale this spring – what is it and when? Nierman: We had a partial dispersal sale in late 80s and had another partial called The Fall Harvest Sale two years ago in September. We will be participating in the Breeders’ Touch Sale this spring in Columbia City, Indiana. Blessing: We are hosting a sale for the first time this spring, The Breeder’s Touch on April 23 at the Whitley Co. 4-H Fairgrounds in Columbia City, Indiana. Main: We have hosted two sales called the Elite Selections at the farm in Copake, two in Wisconsin referred to as the ‘Spring for Colors’ and ‘Summer for Colors Sale’ and will be involved with the Breeder’s Touch this spring. Kulp: We are hosting a sale at the farm this spring, May 7 called the “Colors of KulpDale.” What key factors go into deciding to host a sale? Nierman: The main reason for having registered cattle is to merchandise them or else the papers aren’t worth anything. Our decision for the first one revolved around our labor situation and my health reasons as well as having some really good cows to sell. The last sale, we wanted to reduce our numbers. We were milking close to 180 head and were going to be over 200 if we kept the heifers. Our facilities were going to be crowded. So it was either have a sale or do a massive expansion of the facilities. A sale would give us a reduction in numbers and there were also continuing health issues. I wanted to have more time to spend with my wife who was terminally ill. Blessing: Hard up and need money! Just kidding. We have never depended totally on a milk check for our income. Sale of breeding stock has always been a vital part of our business. For the last couple years, Brian Garrison and I had talked about hosting a sale, just conversation. This past fall in October, at Madison, we talked more seriously about 6

David Kulp of Kulp-Dale Farm milks 105 cows that consist of Brown Swiss, Holseins, Red and White Holsteins, Milking Shorthorns and Jerseys in Manheim, Pennsylvania. Kulp has been dairying for 35 years and is helped by his father, wife, and two neighborhood teens. He is the fourth generation on the farm. Kulp also raises 125 replacement and ET heifers on site.

it and that is when Wayne Sliker got involved. He came up with the ‘Master Breeders’ idea – inviting winners of the Historical Society’s Active Master Breeder Award to be the core of the consignors. It fit perfectly with the kind of consignors we wanted involved. And those breeders are what the sale is built around. Main: To spread ‘Cutting Edge’ genetics all across the country and it’s been an honor to see them being shown and developed by others. Kulp: We have an abundance of ET calves from many different breeds. During the past several years our emphasis has been to produce polled offspring from all breeds. We have also been working with some high genomic Brown Swiss and Red and White Holsteins. There will be polled heifers, offspring from WDE winners such as Busy, Tippy, Seisme, and Frosty, embryo lots, and choices selling. How far in advance did you make this decision? Nierman: The decision was made six months in advance for the first one. This last one we talked about for about a year but the final decision was made about four months prior to the sale. Blessing: This past fall. Main: Two years in advance. Kulp: Last summer. Once the decision is made – have you changed any management practices that you believe will enhance your sale? Nierman: Not really. We made sure all the cattle’s feet were trimmed and we tried to breed a lot of the cows going to be sold to popular bulls and higher index bulls. We made sure cattle were in good shape. Blessing: Haven’t changed any management practices. This sale is centered around show cattle and deep pedigree cattle and we manage those the same year-round – to always be looking their best. Main: None whatsoever. Kulp: We have changed the feeding of the Brown Swiss Bulletin

heifers to grow more “rib.” We have kept back September and December calves to sell rather than consigning them to sales. Hopefully we will also have some March calves to add to the sale lineup. We have been breeding many of the heifers rather than doing ET work on them. What, in your opinion, are key ingredients for a successful sale? Nierman: Advertising is one of the main ones. Have a good sales manager. Selecting the date and time of year to have the sale is important. Having good people to fit cattle and get them ready to go. Facilities are also important. Blessing: Our consignments will all come from the very top end of our herd and show string. From Blessing Farms and other master breeders involved, we are all consigning right from the top of our herds. Also included will be high-end consignments from other breeders around the country. In order to add a ‘Touch’ of diversity, we will offer a select group of higher-ranked genomic heifers from guest consignors. All the consignors and potential buyers will know the kind of special cattle we’re taking to the sale. Our goal is to make this one of the high profile sales of the year. To ensure the success of this goal, we’ve got Modern Associates management along with many of the top Brown Swiss people in the country involved. First-class promotion of the animals will be a high priority. We are using the local fairgrounds because of the very nice facilities for the cattle and people with plenty of room for parking. Columbia City has the motels and restaurants to accommodate everyone. And of course, we’ve put in our request for a beautiful day! Main: Good cattle, good people, and a good facility. Kulp: Having something worth selling. A good advertising program, aggressive sales staff and a good sale location. Cont. on pg. 8

Sales cont. from pg. 6

What is the most challenging aspect of hosting a sale? Nierman: Getting a proper facility and getting it ready to go. Making sure cows that we are going to sell stayed healthy and keep anything from happening to them. Having an enclosed facility in the event of bad weather was important. Choosing those animals that we were going to put in and putting something in that you would want to buy yourself, good pedigrees and good milk production and show quality type. We try to put in the top end of the herd – not middle or bottom part. Making sure breeding dates are all correct and double checking all the details. Blessing: Hardest part – which ones to sell. We want to put in the very best we have, but as all would understand, we want to keep a couple to make sure I have some fun showing next summer and fall too. Getting animals ready, details all lined up – bedding, feed, manure removal, good help for the setup and take down, motels. And I’m sure there are more details I haven’t thought of yet! Main: Selling a cross section of cattle that will suit all buyers. Kulp: Finding a date that works out and deciding what to sell.

THE ALL-AMERICAN NOMINEES

This year’s All-American contest boasted 149 entries from all over the United States and Canada vying for nomination. Every class was well-represented, with no classes under six entries and several with 10 or more! The nominating committee was compromised of the seven National Show Judges: Mike Berry, Northwest National; Gerrit DeBruin, Southeast National; Michael Heath, Eastern National; Richard Hill, Southwest National; Eric Topp, Western National; Keith Topp, Northeast National and Paul Trapp, International. The States Eighteen states and three Canadian provinces had nominated animals in 2015. The top state for nominees by far is Wisconsin, with 28. New York and Ohio were also very well represented with 18 and 14 nominations, respectively. Indiana achieved nine and Pennsylvania rounded out the top five states with eight nominations. The top Canadian province was Quebec, with five nominees. The Owners It’s no surprise to anyone that the most nominations from a single herd is 17 from Elite Dairy of Copake, New York! Four more animals bred by Elite Dairy were also nominated for new owners. Random Luck Farm of Darlington, Wisconsin, took home several cow and group class nominees for eight total. The groups from Topp-View Swiss, Botkins, Ohio, and Blessing Farms, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, achieved seven nominations each. Wayne Sliker of St. Paris, Ohio, performed an impressive feat of breeding three of the Junior Two-Year-Old nominees, contributing to a total of seven Top Acres prefixes in the group! The Sires Just as Top Acres-bred animals were well-represented in the contest, so were daughters of Top Acres C Wonderment ET *TM. Wonderment boasts the most nominated daughters with eight, and also has the most nominated cows with seven. Old Mill WDE Supreme ET *TM, premier sire at Madison, achieved six nominated daughters, all in the cow classes. Mort Legacy Bonanza *TM also had six nominated daughters. Two Wonderment sons also attained five nominated daughters each: Pit-Crew Wonder Tanbark ET *TM and Voelkers Wndt Chilli Pepper *TM. All five of Tanbark’s nominated daughters came from the heifer classes, making him the top sire of calves and heifers.

Hardy Joins Purebred Team It was with honor and eager excitement that I accepted the sales position with Purebred Publishing! My name is Marjorie Hardy and I am living in Worthington, Massachusetts, with my fiance, Ryan Rida, where we are building our barns and developing our Ridale Genetics herd. I have a strong love and passion for showing, promoting and marketing dairy. I am a graduate of the University of Connecticut-Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture with an Associates Degree in Animal Science. I was an active member of Block and Bridle, Dairy Club and the judging team, and won Brown Swiss and Milking Shorthorn placings at World Dairy Expo. Following college I moved to Vermont where I was the herdsman and social media manager for Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company for three and a half years. For the past five months, since moving to Massachusetts, I have been working as a Veterinary Assistant at a nearby small animal hospital. My family’s farm, Hardy Farm in Maine, has given me my dairy background. My parents are currently milking 45-50 head of Ayrshires with a few Holsteins at Hardy Farm. Through my years as a National Ayrshire Junior member, I received the Distinguished and Outstanding Ayrshire Youth Awards, was the 2007-2008 National Ayrshire Princess, and won many record book contests. It has been a dream of mine to work in the dairy industry, with and for the people that have the same kind of passion as I do. I have done many ad designs for my family, friends and colleagues that have been in a wide variety of publications and used as farm displays. I am thrilled to start working with the Purebred team and cannot wait to serve the breeders of the represented breeds in an industry that I am passionate about. PAST - PRESENT - AND FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES • Last year’s sale provided a great selection of show calves including 5 making the winner’s circle at National Shows in MA, PA, WI, OK and CA. Others made their mark at state and local shows for happy buyers. You can count on more this year that will “Walk the Walk.” • We have been fortunate to have supportive consignors for the Revue. This enables us to provide the high quality eye-pleasing cattle to suit your tastes. • Production is always paramount - we are very proud that Paris (pictured left) is a Midwest Revue alumni making breed history.
