The Executive Report

Happy Holidays from the AMSS office! It is hard to believe that it is already the end of the year and we have wrapped up another show season. As I write this column, I am sitting through the first snow storm of the season and I am longing for the crisp fall show days. Fall has always been my favorite time of the year – I don’t know when I realized that it was not only the changing tree leaves but the excitement of the dairy shows. I still feel that way as I show up at any dairy show. 2016 has been another phenomenal year for the Milking Shorthorn breed. Cates Ruben Tulsa-Time EXP had another successful year of winning her second consecutive Jimmy King Triple Crown Award – three National Grand Champions in one year. We also had another star come onto the scene with two-time National Junior Champion, one-time Reserve Junior Champion, and three-time National Junior Show Junior Champion – Heavenly Zippy. Then we have a repeat cow - Kuszmar Arkansas Mud EXP who won the Total Performance Award at both National Shows she attended plus a Grand Champion title, and all after her 2015 success of two Total Performance Awards. These animals have dairy enthusiasts from other dairy breeds stepping up and wanting to become involved with the Milking Shorthorn breed. A key component of all three of these incredible animals are that they are all bred and owned animals. Which is an impressive accomplishment! Congratulations to Peter Cate, Brett Groebner and Steven and Susan Kuszlyk! As we head into the winter months, I will be working with Joanna Landrum and the AMSS Board as we analyze the results of the recent AMSS survey and begin to formulate a strategic plan for the future of the AMSS. This will take some time to complete but will be well worth the time and effort involved to move AMSS forward into the future. Stay tuned as we work on this important project. As you are receiving this Journal, your renewal membership packets should be close behind. They are smaller than last year but will contain an insert that lists all of the AMSS forms available on the website or by contacting the office. If you prefer to receive forms by mail, feel free to contact Kathy and she will send you what you need. Please be sure to review the letter enclosed with the packet closely. It will contain any new information that the AMSS Board decides at their Winter Board Meeting. As you prepare for the Holiday season remember to take time to enjoy and spend time with your families. This is a perfect time to be thankful for them and to rejoice in spending another year with them. Happy Holidays!! Junia Isiminger AMSS Executive Secretary

President's Corner

By Scott Cailteux Holiday Greetings to my fellow Milking Shorthorn enthusiasts. Another successful show season is behind us and Thanksgiving Day, an original American holiday, is upon us. We are so fortunate to live in such a free and prosperous country. AMSS has a lot to be thankful for. I am confident our future is bright. Registrations and transfers have increased from last year, interest and demand for Milking Shorthorn cattle appears to be on an upward trend, our financial position is strong, and we have two competent and dedicated employees as well as many members who tirelessly work to improve the breed. The quality and quantity of Milking Shorthorn cattle that are shown at our National Shows continues to be very impressive. Pete Cate’s Ruben Tulsa -Time EXP won the Jim King Triple Crown award again. Congratulations Pete! I am particularly thankful that we have finally stabilized our national office after many years of struggling to meet your needs and expectations. Registrations and transfers are being timely processed, accounting and billing is current, efforts are underway to enhance our website, and many other backlogs are being taken care of. We are fortunate to have Junia Isiminger and Kathy Lynch working for us. They are both passionate about our breed and work tirelessly to continuously improve the service quality of the national office. As with any organization, mistakes do happen from time to time. However, I can assure you we learn from these mistakes. The Board of Directors will be holding their winter meeting in Beloit the first week of December. As always, we have a full agenda and a busy two days ahead of us.

ason Lloyd of Middleburgh, New York had the pleasure of judging the Northeastern National Milking Shorthorn show on Tuesday, September 20 at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Massachusetts. A year ago from today, I had no idea what the future would hold for me, I had absolutely no clue that I would be traveling across the country, pursuing my passion, but here I am, doing just that. Throughout the 18th and 20th of September, I had the opportunity of taking my first flight out to the East Coast, to attend the 100th anniversary of the “Big E.” Although it may have been a surprise to many fellow breeders that my family and I chose to attend the Eastern States Exposition Expo, compared to the All-American Milking Shorthorn Show that occurred that same week at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, I believe we made the right choice with the help of the Clark family of GMC Farm. I met many wonderful people in my short time there, making me feel like I’ve known them my whole entire life. The East Coast breeders' beautiful red, white and roan cattle definitely stood their ground while parading along the golden shavings at World Dairy Expo in early October in Madison, Wisconsin. Congratulations to “Cates Ruben Tulsa-Time EXP” owned by Peter Cate, I laid a blanket along her back, made out of real flowers whom at the Big E honoring her with the title of Grand Champion Milking Shorthorn of the Open Show. Then once again with many of other awards at World Dairy Expo. Following, in early November, I drove hours down south to Louisville, Kentucky, to attend the North American International Livestock Exposition, where “Tulsa” would be granted with the title once again and the title of "The Triple Crown Winner” for the second year straight. I congratulate all Milking Shorthorn Breeders whom participated at this year’s National Shows, as well as thanking them to give me this opportunity to represent such stunning animals. I send out a huge thank you to my family members: Mike (Father), Darrin (Uncle), Dave (Grandfather), and Betty (Grandmother), Gregory, for sacrificing their time and needs, in order for me to have this title and to be able to travel to all the places my crown has taken me. However, with much greatness occurring in our association, as most have heard, a tragic event occurred as well, I send my thoughts and prayers out to the Halpin Family.

Milking Shorthorn Journal Holiday 2016

Jr. Officer Report

The leaves are beginning to turn colors, crops are being harvested, and no farmer is ready for Winter, especially here at Buckeye Knoll Farm! This summer has been tough for a lot of farmers around the United States, not only just dairy farmers. With all these tough times and the milk prices being low we all need to be reminded that when things hit rock bottom they can only go up from there. I know a lot of people are struggling right now with money, but remember it is only a piece of paper that we have given value to. The Milking Shorthorn breeders need to hold hands and encourage each other to keep going and look at the positive aspects in what this great industry withholds. The values, responsibilities, friendships and more couldn’t be learned the same anywhere else. You can either look at the glass half empty or half full. Milking Shorthorn Juniors, I would like all of you to thank your mom, dad, family, or friends who have helped you and make sure they know you appreciate everything they have done for you. I hope to see everyone next year out on the show circuit with all their extraordinary Milking Shorthorns. -Hannah Rhoades of Buckeye Knoll Farm National Milking Shorthorn Vice-President

Junior Spotlight Topanga McBride was born in Phoenix, Arizona where she lived for the first three years with her parents Scott and Shani McBride. Then they moved to Colorado where she grew up for the rest of her life in the Fort Collins area. She has one sister, Brianna McBride, who is just two-and-a-half years younger than her and is completing her senior year in high school. Topanga is now 20 years old and is a junior at Kansas State University where she is double majoring in agricultural communications and agricultural economics. Topanga’s connection to dairy starts with her grandparents. When they moved to Colorado, her mom was still very adamant that they were in 4-H and the agriculture industry. They traveled back to Arizona when she was eight to get her first heifer, a Milking Shorthorn she named Sevah. Topanga’s herd grew over time, being almost completely Milking Shorthorns with an occasional Holstein. They have a little bit of land where they keep most of the cows, giving her the opportunity to learn about farming. The milk cows stay on a dairy nearby. Growing up, her family still traveled to Arizona to participate in the Ari-

by Jaydyn Isiminger

zona State Fair while her family continues to do so now. When Topanga is home, she would help feed calves, clean pens, and give medical care to the cows. She helped in the calving of most of their cows and aided her mom in transporting cows between locations. Topanga was also responsible for deciding when it was time to sell any heifers, which is not an easy task. Now that she away from home, Topanga has sold most of her cows and can’t do much to help. “I absolutely love this breed! Not only are they absolutely beautiful, they have unique personalities and are good cows. They are great mothers and are great for a variety of farmers, whether you’re looking for conventional milk, grass-fed, hobby farming, or dual purpose. We kept our steers for meat and it was some of the best meat I’ve ever had as well. I wish that our dairy industry had more diversity in its herd make-up because I love the Milking Shorthorn breed,” says Topanga Topanga’s most memorable time with Milking Shorthorns was her favorite cow Maddie. A few years into her showing career,

Topanga had the opportunity to go back to Arizona and pick out a new heifer. This was the first heifer she had the option to choose. Topanga raised Maddie from little calf into the Supreme Champion of the Colorado State Fair. Maddie was also her showmanship cow and walked for her like a dream. Maddie loved to give hugs with her neck in which Topanga grew very close with her. Sadly, Maddie came down with ketosis and Topanga had to make the decision to put her down. But Topanga will always remember her and keep the memories they had together.

The following is an article recently published about Topanga. Reprinted with permission from Progressive Dairyman's Sept. 12, 2016 issue.

" Colorado youth embodies 4-H’s ‘Grow True Leaders’ campaign

In the words of Jennifer Sirangelo, president and CEO of the National 4-H Council, a true leader leads by example, works well with others, tackles tough challenges head-on and sticks with a job until it’s done. A shining example of a true leader in 4-H dairy youth today is Topanga McBride from Severence, Colorado. McBride came from a unique situation where she personally did not grow up on a dairy farm but has been extensively involved in raising and showing dairy cows. Her mother grew up in Arizona showing dairy in 4-H and wanted to pass on the tradition to McBride and her sister. “I didn’t really choose my 4-H project. It chose me,” McBride says. “When I turned 8, my mom said, ‘Topanga, we are going to go to the dairy and we are going to get you a heifer so you can show in 4-H.’” On an extra acre in her neighborhood, McBride raised her first Milking Shorthorn heifer. For the first three years of showing, McBride had a rough start because her Milking Shorthorn was not tame and managed to run her over during showmanship, landing her last place. McBride says her mother offered to let her try a different project, but she was determined to stick with dairy and started over with a new cow. The second time around, McBride says she was more responsible and learned how to properly train and clip her new Milking Shorthorn. As she grew older, she became a role

model to younger 4-H’ers by assisting with showmanship clinics and leading by example. “I’d take the younger kids in my club with me to shake the judge’s hand to show them that it is about having fun, it is about learning and growing, and in the end you can’t control the outcome, but you can have pride in the work you put in,” McBride says. “So I made sure I had the right attitude around the show instead of letting my emotions get to me.” By practicing good sportsmanship and applying patience, McBride says she started to see her hard work finally pay off in the end. “I went from getting last place in the shows to getting grand champion in showmanship, competing in round robin and winning supreme champion cow at the Colorado State fair,” McBride says. Despite the success showing her supreme champion cow, Maddie, they had problems with her pregnancies, and she aborted her first calf. On her second breeding, her cow would not take to A.I., and after her third pregnancy, Maddie had ketosis and did not recover. “I really matured so much because of what 4-H put me through,” McBride says. “I learned a lot about leadership and about integrity, and I think because of 4-H, I am who I am today.” McBride believes leadership is about putting others before oneself to help a group succeed in achieving a goal. In her eyes, it is more than just focusing on oneself and being self-centered. She says there are a lot of problems that need to be solved in the world, and

leadership is helping people work together to solve those problems and come together over similar values to achieve a goal. In today’s society, there is a critical need for true leaders who are prepared with the skills to deal with the problems of today and challenges of tomorrow. One issue McBride came to recognize from her dairy experience was a lack of leadership development opportunities for students to specifically advocate for agriculture. Her freshman year of college while at Kansas State University, McBride worked with her county extension agent to create the Weld Agricultural Leadership Ambassadors program. After countless conference calls and trips back to Colorado, she was successful in getting the program started. Every year since, five to 10 senior 4-H’ers interested in agriculture are interviewed and selected to receive training, tour different industries and give presentations to groups about agriculture. When the ambassadors complete a year of the program, they receive a $1,000 scholarship for their college education. McBride hopes to see the program expand to other counties, saying it could be easily replicated across the country. Even though she personally didn’t get to go through her own program, she is proud to have an impact on younger members and leave her legacy in Weld County 4-H. “It took integrity to create a program like this where I knew in the end I wouldn’t get Cont. on pg. 32
