The Executive Report

Greetings from the AMSS National Office!!! Happy Spring!! Last night I knew that spring was here. I heard the peepers peeping, caught a steer that got out of the fence, walked through a foot of standing water in the corner of the steer/bull pasture and fixed fence and then this morning got the call that we have another March calf – a beautiful little heifer! Yep, that sounds about right – it's SPRING! Spring in the AMSS world means All Americans and Junior All-Americans have been announced, planning for the National Convention and Annual Meeting are underway and registrations and transfers are coming in for the upcoming show season. The ballots for nomination of delegates went out the week of March 15th. Please remember when you nominate a person that they must be a current paid member of AMSS, otherwise they are not eligible to serve as a delegate. Also be sure that the nomination forms are back to the AMSS office in Beloit by the due date or they will not be counted. Other upcoming deadlines to note: applications for the various AMSS awards were mailed in your renewal membership packet or you can download them off of the website. These are due back to the office by April 15th. National Convention Sale Entries are due May 1st. This will be a strict deadline for getting into the catalog. We have had problems in the past with the catalog not getting to breeders and other potential buyers until the time of the sale and we would like to have the catalog out in the mail earlier this year. It is also the time of year for the state secretaries to get your current membership lists into Kathy at the office. Without this information, members are charged at the National rate for all registration/ transfer work instead of at the lower combined price of state and national. We are always looking for upcoming show and sale dates to put on the website and in the Journal. As soon as you have the dates for events, please notify the office. Our office manager, Kathy Lynch, has now been working for us for just over three months. She is enjoying her job and has been a huge help to me and I hope also to you the breeders. All mail is being sent to the Beloit office and she is handling all of the registrations, transfers and embryo paperwork. Please continue to send in your registration work for the upcoming show season early so that you will have them back in time for shows. Kathy’s current turnaround time, unless there is an issue, is about a week to ten days after receiving the work in the office. Remember to send your payment for work with the applications to speed up the process of receiving your original registrations back. It is also important to remember if you are registering ET calves, that we need a copy of the flush and implantation sheet to properly register the calf. In addition, if the flush was completed after September 1, 2014, the dam of the flush has to have DNA on file before the flush can be registered and in turn the calf’s registration to be finalized. Other items to note, please be sure that your DNA is completed on your bulls before you sell them at market. If you haven’t received the DNA report that everything is okay, please contact me. There could have been a problem with the sample (i.e. contaminated, never received by the DNA lab, parentage does not match, etc.). As Kathy becomes more comfortable in her role and items that I haven’t been able to keep up with are caught up, I plan to put more focus on promoting the Milking Shorthorn breed and our society. If you are aware of a neighbor or friend that has Milking Shorthorns but may not be using the Society’s services, please put them in touch with me or provide me with contact information that I may reach out to them. Identifying and keeping records regarding Milking Shorthorns is what allows us to keep the Society operating. Through records in the office we are able to gain information that we can share with prospective buyers of Milking Shorthorn cattle. Anything we can do to encourage more owners and breeders of Milking Shorthorns is good for all of us. As you enter into spring planting season, be safe and may the weather shine on your fields. Milking Shorthorns – Breeding for Tomorrow Junia Isiminger Executive Secretary Advertising Deadline for the Early Summer Issue is April 6 for the 5% discount. Dairying a bit uniquely By Robin Alden

T

he versatility of the Milking Shorthorn lends itself to some pretty unique dairying, and Weissway Farms of Arcanum, Ohio, is no exception. Casey and Krista Weiss split their 25 milking head between two very different dairies – an intensive TMR free stall operation in Greenville, and a grazing dairy in Bradford. The Weisses, who are located an hour and a half away from this year’s convention in Dublin, know better than anyone just how unique each Milking Shorthorn can be. Casey Weiss is a past president of the American Milking Shorthorn Society, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his passion for the breed. Casey and Krista’s five children are the seventh generation of Weisses to raise Milking Shorthorns. However, Casey names his grandfather as the one who began the family tradition of breeding registered Milking Shorthorns. When it comes to deciding which milking herd to send a fresh cow to, Casey analyzes pedigrees as well as the confirmation of the animal. If the animal is a clean-cut, dairy cow who is bred to milk, she will go to Buckeye Knoll Farm in Greenville, Ohio, the high-input TMR operation. If the cow is heavier with lower production in her background, she goes to Larkfield Farms, a grazing dairy in Bradford, Ohio. This dairy, run by Peter McGlynn, markets several dairy products off the farm through herdshares. The versatility of the breed is why Casey feels comfortable having cattle in two herds. “Almost every Milking Shorthorn cow will succeed in a grass-based operation,” he said. Casey praises the grass-converting ability of the breed, stating, “Milking Shorthorns can succeed in a low-input operation if you want them to.” Weissway heifers are not introduced to grass until they are a year old, but receive forage from the time of weaning. At yearling age, they are put on pasture to get used to the grass as well as the electric fence – an important factor in grazing! One standout cow who is currently located at the commercial Buckeye Knoll herd

is Innisfail Cy Lobelia 239 EX-90, who was Nominated All-American and Junior All-American in 2015. The Cylcone daughter completed a two-year-old record with 4.1% fat and 3.4% protein and is due back in September to Lands-Brook Clancy. She was purchased at the 2013 Wisconsin Dairyland Sale. One of the more unique aspects of the Weissway herd is the source of income. “I don’t make money milking cows,” says Casey. Both of the Weisses have off-the-farm jobs in Greenville, Casey as a factory manager and Krista as a teacher. Weissway’s source of income is selling quality heifers. Casey buys and sells bulls and collects them in between to sell semen as well. The Weisses believe this unique niche is easier to be successful in the Milking Shorthorn breed than most others due to the lack of quality proven bulls in A.I. Some of the bulls Weissway currently uses include B-D-F Diamond Sparkler, Hard Core R Rob Romeo EXP ET, Lands-Brook Clancy, Rovin Mega All Abner P and MyshaWO Advent Liriano-ET. Casey takes mating consideration very seriously and mates every cow for an individual complimentary match. This leads to quite a few semen tanks – “I have more semen than cows!” said Casey. Currently, Casey is selling one polled bull, Rovin Mega All Abner P, and is preparing another for collection, Mapleton Vly Spark Atlas P. Abner is a Megadeth son of an EX-92 Liriano, and Atlas is a Sparkler son of an EX-90 Ted. Casey is moving towards a polled herd, including trying to produce more polled bulls to market. He appreciates the breed for their top-quality polled genetics, something other breeds lack. The future of Weissway is secure in the hands of Casey and Krista’s breeding program, but also their five children, each of whom have their own responsibilities on the farm. Alex, 16, is in charge of steers and open heifers; Maggie, 12, takes care of the chickens and yearlings; Katie, 11, raises weaned

Milking Shorthorn Journal Spring 2016

calves; Charlie, 8, takes charge of the pigs and Henry, 7, cares for the dogs, cats and rabbits. In addition, Casey raises the baby calves and “Krista takes care of everyone!” The name of the game at Weissway is improvement. Because their main source of farm income is breeding stock, Casey strives for well-balanced calves with type and production pedigrees. The Weisses are very proud with the herd they have managed to build. “When we were married in 2001, we had four head, and they weren’t very good,” said Casey. They have now built up to 25 milking head, and are very happy with their improvements. Weissway truly shows what careful attention to detail can do for a herd, whether it’s in mating, niche marketing, or raising quality cattle. Photos courtesy of the Weissway Farms Facebok page

Junior Spotlight

by Nicholas Achen

I would like to introduce you to other members of our family that use the CHERRYWOOD prefix. My uncle Jeff and his family have also been raising and showing Milking Shorthorns and live in Iowa. First off, there is Trevor. He is a freshman at AGWSR High School (a consolidation of a bunch of small towns in Iowa). Trevor was naturally born into showing cattle as his dad Jeff Clawson and older sisters Courtney and Kayla, would go to county fairs, National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo and the Iowa State Fair. One year Trevor was without a project calf. That year his dad asked Stuart Rowe of Innisfail in California to send two heifers across the country for a reasonable price for him and his sister Courtney. Trevor showed Innisfail RU Lady 304 for two years and as she developed she made her way to NAILE in 2014. There she was Junior Champion of the Junior Show and Reserve Junior Champion of the Open Show. Since his dad no longer milks, it was decided to send Lady 304 to Aunt Cindy’s dairy in South Dakota. Even though she was very much his favorite Milking Shorthorn, he decided to let her go and transferred ownership to his favorite cousin—ME! Trevor came to watch as I exhibited her at the 2015 WDE where she was Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show. Trevor has taken Lady’s heifer calf and will continue with this cow

family. Besides showing, Trevor is in FFA and is a member of the Chapter’s Soil Judging Team that qualified for the national soil judging contest this spring in Oklahoma. He has been involved in basketball, golf, and the First Presbyterian Church of Ackley. In the near future he plans to attend the National Convention in Ohio and eventually attend Iowa State University. He says, "Milking Shorthorns are a part of me as my family has been involved with them for over 40 years." Next, is Trevor’s step-sister Megan Osborn. She wanted to be part of this whole CHERRYWOOD thing, so to make sure she knew what she was getting into, we had her come and stay with us for a while doing chores and just to make sure she could handle it. We sent a heifer back with her and she has passed the test and is as die-hard a Milking Shorthorn breeder as the rest of us! Megan is a freshman at Boone High School. She is on the honor roll and enjoys these competitive sports: volleyball, AAU volleyball, basketball, and tennis. Megan also is in FFA, 4-H County Council, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and swing choir, chorus, and individual voice competition (I have never heard her sing, we can ask her to sing for us when she comes to the convention with Trevor). Other projects areas for Megan include: sheep, beef cattle and poultry.

David Frederick Blough was born in Goshen on June 20, 1951 to Dorothy and Duane Blough. He lost his life in a farm accident on Monday, March 7, 2016. He graduated with honors in 1973 in the School of Animal Science at Puredue University. As a member of the Purdue Collegiate Dairy Judging Team in 1972, he received top10 recognition in each of the national contests.

David was a lifelong dairyman operating Woodsbrook Farms with his parents and, later, with his wife and children. On July 7, 1973, he married Michelle Bullard. She survives along with his two sisters; Trudy (Rick) Racine of Ozawkie, Kansas; and Dr. Jan (J.C.) Haynes of Cleveland, Mississippi; a daughter, Dr. Emilie Blough; a son, Craig Blough (fiancé Jessica Herschberger) all of Goshen,

Obituaries

Megan’s first Milking Shorthorn project had a heifer calf for her and she is raising that one with the cow being housed at a neighboring dairy. She says dairy is her ultimate favorite project as she loves taking care of the calves and meeting other kids involved with dairy animals. Her mother grew up on a Northeast Iowa dairy farm, so I guess it was in her blood. She also had a nice heifer project this past year, Cherry Lady that she exhibited at the 2015 WDE. Megan would like to get a job at the Iowa State University dairy farm when she turns 16 and also go to college there. Megan says her Milking Shorthorns are more than just calves, they are part of the family and my family’s tradition and looks forward to more times in the show ring and learning about the dairy industry.

and Cara (Derek) and Joel Brovont and four granddaughters of West Lafayette. Also surviving are his aunt Shirley Hall, uncle John Shoup (Margaret), three nieces, two nephews and their families, as well as cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Craig Thomas and his son, Derek F. Blough.

USA Exchange Report

M

By Matt Henry y exchange commenced on the 31st of August, landing in Dallas on a very warm afternoon after a 15.5 hour direct flight from Sydney, Austrailia. The first stop was Krause’s dairy in Como, Texas. The Krause family had only been dairying at this farm for about two years and it was obvious the range of improvements that had been made to the property in this short time. While at the Krause’s I also visited a number of other surrounding dairies and Milking Shorthorn members. There were also visits from the hoof trimmer and nutritionist while I was there, with both being interesting to talk to about the similarities and differences between their professions and the industry in general between Australia and USA. My next stop was the Crawley family in Arkansas. In the milking herd it was good to see progeny of a number of Australian bulls, including a nice line of cows by a home bred Clarefield Mocha son. The next stop was the Arthurs in Oklahoma. Theirs was a smaller herd in comparison, run in conjunction with a large cropping operation. It was also interesting to talk to Francis Arthur, who was part of one of the first groups to come to Australia looking at Illawarra genetics. Whilst I was at Arthurs, one of the most interesting and eye-opening parts of the exchange was a visit to Braum's Dairy. This was a 12,000-cow herd, with capacity to milk 14,000, where all the milk produced was processed on site to be sold as ice cream or milkshakes through the Braum's chain of fast food stores. From Arthurs' I flew to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. I found the quality of the All-American show to be quite good across the whole show. One of the highlights of the exchange program, as far as looking at cattle, was the four-year-old class at Harrisburg. The winner of that class, Cates Ruben Tulsa-Time EXP, went on to be grand that day and again at Expo, and again at Louisville. Congratulations to Peter Cate for that tremendous achievement. Not only was she an outstanding winner of that class, but also the quality of the next three to four animals behind her, any of which would compete well at any show I’ve seen, was what I found so impressive. I must admit this was pleasantly surprising after some of the mixed reports from previous Australian visitors. I left Harrisburg, making the trip to Springfield, Massachusetts, where I spent a few days with Mo Phelon and Andy before the Big E started. The Big E was a smaller showing of Shorthorns than Harrisburg, however there were still some quality animals exhibited. I travelled home from the Big E with the Clark family and after staying one night at their farm in New Hampshire we set off to Expo. World Dairy Expo was all everyone said it

would be, from exhibitors' displays to the trade show, the quality of the cattle and even the ring atmosphere. Again, I found the quality of the Milking Shorthorn show to be exceptional and I would like to congratulate all exhibitors on what I overheard some seasoned ringside observers say was the strongest shorthorn showing they had ever seen. One thing I noticed across all the shows I attended was the disparity between the classification system used for the Milking Shorthorns and the Illawarras. In my opinion the 94, 95 and 96-point cows are once-in-a-lifetime type cows, not three in every show team. I raised this with a number of people while on the exchange and almost, if not all, agreed that having both populations on the same classification system would be mutually beneficial. I feel leveling the system would be an easy way of giving breeders more confidence in using genetics from the other country. This is especially the case because in most instances there is not a personal knowledge of the cow family behind a bull in AI in the opposite country, so when a sire is marketed as having a number of generations of high-scoring cows behind him, confidence and parity in the classification system used to score these cows is important. Overall I was impressed with the quality of the Milking Shorthorns I saw, both on the farms and at shows. The Milking Shorthorn showing policy is much stricter than that of the Illawarras. I feel there is tremendous potential for increased exchange of genetics, with both countries not currently getting offered the best of the other's sires, in my opinion. In fact, I recall having a conversation with someone about exchange of genetics and saying that after seeing the cattle exhibited at three of the national shows, if I could pick 10 straws of any red bull in the world to use it would be Megadeath, followed by Red Ruben, both of which we have never had access to in Australia. Similarly, I believe the Australian bulls that people told

Milking Shorthorn Journal Spring 2016

me they have used or were using were not the best that we have to offer. For this to improve, as well as the classification issues, I think the Shorthorn Society must work on getting more of their high-use sires into stud as opposed to privately collected and distributed so they can be accessed worldwide, while Australia must attempt to breed bulls of suitable quality that would qualify as a GE sire so they can be used in the United States. Finally, I would like to again thank everyone that hosted me, drove me between places or even just stopped to introduce themselves. The exchange was a fantastic experience and I would highly recommend it to any young people from either country thinking of applying. Obit. cont. from pg. 24
