Greetings from the AMSS National Office!!! I am doing herd visits in Oklahoma and Texas as I am writing this, on my way to the annual USLGE meeting in Galveston, Texas. I have enjoyed the Milking Shorthorn breeders that I have had the opportunity to visit with and see their dairy operations, as well as stay in their homes and be welcomed as part of their families. In the future you will see stories regarding the farms that I have visited. However, I want to take the time now to thank Clark Von Tunglen; John Kebert; Anita Van Der Laan; Lewis, Debbie and Dakota Arthur; Steve, Robbie, Travis and Jim Marak; Curt and Mikayla Krause; Wanda, Jackie, Danny and Shelly Huddleston and Brent Jennings for their hospitality and kindness. Milking Shorthorn breeders are the best! In the middle of January, membership packets were mailed. Hopefully you have all received your packets. As you may have noticed on the forms, all mail is to be sent to the 800 Pleasant Street, Beloit, Wisconsin, address. Having an office manager now in Beloit, Kathy is able to take care of the mail, especially when I am traveling. She is also doing the registrations and billing, therefore, sending things to her will speed up the process. Items addressed by the Board of Directors at the Winter Board Meeting in December included rush fees. Rush fees have been increased to $20 per item unless needed within 72 hours and that price had previously been increased, effective January 2015, to $100 per item. Additional costs include overnight fees for mailing 72 hour rush work at $25 per packet. Please note that rushes include mail, fax and email including duplicates of registration papers. To avoid these fees, please submit your paperwork early to be processed. Most paperwork turnaround time is two weeks from the time that it is received in the office. As you are beginning to look at animals for the summer show season, now is the time to be sure that your paperwork is in order and completed. Our office manager Kathy Lynch has been on the job since December 1st and she is learning more every day. We continue to spend time daily training over the phone and I spent a week in December and one in January in the Beloit office doing training. Kathy has also been receiving training on registrations from Allicia at the Brown Swiss office. Kathy is learning quickly; however there is a lot to learn and recently she has been introduced to the accounting part of her job. Please continue to be patient as she continues to learn about our breed, our breeders and our systems. Training takes time but she is willing and anxious to help you the breeders. As she settles more into her job and having the knowledge to complete tasks, I will have more time to spend on promoting our breed and completing other tasks. I believe that 2016 will be a year that you will see some very positive changes happening in the office and in our breed promotion. Congratulations to all of our All-American and Junior All-American nominations. The group of dairy cattle represented in the contests is incredible. You, as Milking Shorthorn breeders, should be proud of your accomplishments this year. As we move into the spring, please look for our All-American and Junior All-American winCont. on pg. 15

The Executive Report

Happy New Year! After taking time off to relax and celebrate the holidays with our family and friends, it is time to get back to work. I am hopeful that 2016 will be a successful and prosperous year for the American Milking Shorthorn Society and its members. The Board of Directors held its winter board meeting in Beloit, Wisconsin, on December 4th and 5th. As is always the case, it took us two long days to get through the agenda. The board is committed to moving the Milking Shorthorn breed forward. We are focused on restoring the quality of the services provided by the National Office, protecting the integrity of our registration process, improving the genetics of the breed, and increasing demand for Milking Shorthorns. As you are aware, we have hired Kathy Lynch to fill our recently created Office Manager position. We expect our member service quality to steadily improve throughout the year as Kathy learns her duties. We have budgeted several thousands of dollars for DNA and genomics testing during 2016. This testing will assist us with enhanced parentage verification and the identification of genetic anomalies that may exist in our herd book. As Kathy assumes more of the administrative duties, Junia will have more time to focus on marketing and promotion of our breed. In this edition of the Journal, you will see some of our best cattle. Remember to mail your entries for the All-American Judging contest to Junia for a chance to win bragging rights and a little cash. Best wishes, Scott

Rising Stars in Ohio!

T

he passing of the farm through generations is not just a tradition of the dairy industry – it is also a source of anxiety for many. Some worry about finding the right family member to carry on the herd’s legacy; perhaps even more are concerned with finding anyone at all. For the Climer family, however, the worry was not who to pass the cows on to, but if there would be any cows left. Most of the Milking Shorthorn community recalls the passing of Cindy Climer, who will always be remembered for her dedication to her Tres Colles Milking Shorthorns. After her loss, a majority of her herd was sadly sent to slaughter, ending generations of hard work and fine breeding. However, thanks to the generosity of Cindy, as well as the late David Climer Sr., part of the herd lives on. Sisters Samantha (Climer) Scott and Ginna Climer were able to start the aptly-named

Rising Star herd on the foundation of a Milking Shorthorn heifer given to Samantha as a wedding gift by their Aunt Cindy and Grandfather Dave. This heifer was Tres Colles HTR Shasta, sired by a Rambo out of one of Tres Colles’ greatest, Tres Colles Olivers HazelEXP ‘2E-94.’ Hazel was Junior All-American in 2006 and made over 154,000M in her illustrious career. Shasta is now scored ‘+84’ and is backed by six generations of Very Good dams. Dave and Cindy also showed their generosity when gifting Homeless SC Sleet EXP to Ginna for a 4-H project. Sleet (now scored Very Good) gave Ginna Rising Star Warlord Stormi, ‘V85’ at 2-07, the first of now three animals with the sisters’ new prefix. Both Samantha and Ginna are active in ensuring the Climer Milking Shorthorn legacy continues. Samantha and her husband Jim have started a family with daughter Lexi, 3, and Lane, 1. Says Samantha, “[Lexi] has a passion for the dairy industry like I’ve never seen before…She climbs the gates, feeds the babies, helps on the wash rack, walks the girls, and is now in the show ring.” Although Lane never had the opportunity to meet Cindy or Dave, their heritage shines through. “Lane holds the halter, plays in the water on the wash rack and calls in the girls at feeding time,” boasts Samantha. “All of these characteristics

come from our previous generations. A generation we are proud of. A generation that was taken too soon.” Ginna is the reigning National Milking Shorthorn Queen, and has travelled to all the National Shows to perform her duties. There, she has been able to branch out her love for the breed, a love that is owed to that original 4-H project given to her by Cindy & Dave. Samantha offers advice to young families in the industry – “The dairy industry is not something you can lose once it’s in your blood. You may take a break but the spark will always reignite the flame.” The Climers are proof that one should never give up hope on their legacy being passed on. Finally, Samantha says, “It only takes one to make a herd.” Again, the Climers are living proof! Pictured at top left is Jim, Samanth, Lexi & Lane Scott. Lexi & Lane also grace this issue's cover. Junia's Journeys A fancy Perfect Storm daughter at GMC Farms in New Hampshire.

In May 2015, I had the opportunity to visit GMC Farms of New Hampshire. Many know the Clarks for their influence on the Milking Shorthorn breed through developing sires that have been sold into stud and for their success in the show ring. All of this has been accomplished while Greg and Marcia Clark have operated a dairy on only five acres with all of their feed purchased and all the manure sold. The manure is traded with a nearby uncle for round bales of hay for the heifers. All feed is purchased from Canada which includes baleage and commercial feed. Grain is fed in their 10-stall flat parlor. At the time of my visit, there were 50 cows in the milking herd with about 35 Milking Shorthorns, 11 Brown Swiss and 14 Holsteins, however during June there were 25 head due to calve. The maxi-

mum number of cows they have milked in the past was 70 last summer. The herd average is just under 20,000M. The cows are housed in a pack-type barn. Some of the cows can be let out in a small pasture. Calves are raised in a greenhouse-style barn in pens and some calf hutches. When heifers reach a year of age they are moved to a separate farm where they are raised until close to calving. The exception are the show heifers - they remain at the farm. The Milking Shorthorns on the farm are influenced by breeding from several of the well known cow families, including the Dairybell line from Clayside Farm owned by Clark Von Tungeln, the Wild Rose and Lady line from Innisfail owned by Stuart Rowe, as well as many of the Innisfail bulls including Destry Lad, OConnor, Jekyll, Red Robin and Perfect Storm. Influence comes as well from the Kuszmar bulls including Othello and Megadeth. Other notable influences include Academy, the Lucy family and Pinehurst. The family’s goal is breeding for show and to have big Milking Shorthorns with good milk production. They do use EXP but have not used much genetic expansion currently. They have in the past, however, they want to be able to show their cattle and therefore try to keep in the EXP or full herdbook. Greg and Marcia have another unique factor for their farm. Both of them work off the farm full time. Greg has worked for 28 years at Timko Machine Shop and Marcia started as a part-time bookkeeper and has worked into being a partner in two gun shops. The Clarks have four children; three of them

are involved in the farm. Greg Jr. is their oldest, who works at one of Marcia’s gun shops. Greg Jr. is married with four children and lives just down the road from the farm. His oldest son, Johnathon, is 8 years old and showed in 2015. Greg Jr. does have a few heifers that he raises on his little farm including a Huckleberry daughter and several daughters of the famous Lauren cow. Their second son, Justin is a pharmacist in Phoenix, Arizona, and also has four children. Although Justin is not on the farm, he was able to travel back for the Big E with two of his girls in 2015 to show with the family. Daughter Brooke is the Clarks' full-time herdsman and is home working on the farm. You can tell when you talk with her that she loves the cows and is happy in her role. The Clarks' youngest daughter is LindCont. on pg. 16

ners in our March issue. Also coming up in that issue will be details about the 2016 National Milking Shorthorn Convention to be held in Dublin, Ohio – June 15-18. Also please remember that the Journal is the Milking Shorthorn’s breed magazine and has moved to having a trial of six issues this year. We will not be able to continue providing six issues if we do not have enough advertising to support the publication. Please consider advertising in upcoming issues to support the promotion of our breed. For the Red, White and Roan – Breeding for Tomorrow! ~ Junia Isiminger, Executive Secretary

sey who graduated from high school in 2015 and is heading to college where she will be playing basketball in fall. While I was in the New England area, I stayed with Joan and Craig Wortman from Green Acres Milking Shorthorns in Vermont. The farm was started by Joan’s mother Ruth, who moved from Connecticut after selling her farm. As Ruth managed the farm, she needed more help and worked with the Vermont Technical College, a two and four-year school with an Agricultural department. Students were able to come and work at the farm for housing and heat while gaining valuable experience. When Ruth passed away, Joan, who is a registered nurse, continued the farm with her husband, Craig, who works as a chimney sweep. They continued to have students from the college. The herd is a grazing herd with 28 paddocks on the farm with the cows moved daily to a new paddock. Heifers are grazed in other pastures with a few dry cows covering five lo-

16

cal land owners who love the Milking Shorthorn cows. The Wortmans manage the pastures by clipping them off as needed to keep weeds from going to seed. These were the first pastures I have seen with lush green grass with no thistles or burdock. There are 90 acres on the farm with 50 acres tillable. Calves are raised in hutches and then moved into the barn into stalls until they are old enough to move to the pastures. Green Acres breeds to have productive efficient cows of medium size and maintain the Milking Shorthorn characteristics. In 2014 and 2015, Green Acres boasted the honor of being the breeder of the Top Milk Record. This cow was Green Acres Titan Mascara 463480 E90 who in 2013 made 6−06 305 31,300 3.0 944F 2.8 872P. She is sired by Cates Tangerine’s Perles Titan 455926 and owned by SWAG Milking Shorthorns, Dryden, New York. In 2014, Mascara was once again the Top Milk Record at 2E90 with 7−09 305 33,470 3.0 989F 2.8 926P. Mascara also re-

ceived the honor of the 2014 Top Protein Cow and Cow of the Year. Kylie Preisinger is one of the partners in SWAG Milking Shorthorns and is Joan’s daughter and although she is not on the farm, she continues to help with breeding decisions and registration paperwork among other things. Currently Green Acres is looking to move towards selling the farm.

Let the AMSS help market your Bull! The AMSS Board of Directors is in the process of creating our second bull book to further our breed promotion. This book will feature all collected bulls, in some form, available to maximize the genetic diversity and potential in your herd. We printed our first issue in 2015 and it was a resounding success. All bulls must be registered with the AMSS (GE, GR, G1, G12, EXP or Full Herdbook), have a proper NAAB code, be DNA tested, and have available semen. The Bull Book will have a variety of different marketing opportunities for you to promote your genetics. The size of a page will be approximately 4.25 X 5.5 inches. The cost for advertising will be as follows: 1 Bull = $100, 2 or more Bulls $75 per page. We will present as much information as possible on the bulls. In addition to the advertised bulls, we will have a listing of bulls in the back of the catalog. This listing will be complimentary and will have minimal information about the bull. The April 2016 sire proof updates will be used. There will be at least 1000 copies of this publication printed and it will be made available at the National Convention, all National Shows, to all the members of the AMSS and anyone else who requests a copy. Please contact Jason Heeter with any questions at 814-259-3864 or Heeter2000@yahoo.com Please forward all interests and available sire listings to: American Milking Shorthorn Society, 800 Pleasant Street, Beloit, WI 53511 or JuniaAMSS@gmail.com or by Fax: 608-365-6644 We look forward to partnering with you to promote the genetics within your herd and the Milking Shorthorn breed! Hardy Joins Purebred I am Marjorie Hardy and I am excited to have joined the Purebred team as Sales Executive! Living in Worthington, Massachusetts, with my fiance, Ryan Rida; we are working to build and develop our Ridale Genetics herd of Ayrshires and Milking Shorthorns. I have a strong love and passion for showing, promoting and marketing dairy and am ready to put it to work. I am a graduate of the University of Connecticut-Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture with an Associates Degree in Animal Science. I was an active member of Block and Bridle, Dairy Club and the judging team excelled in school. Following college I moved to Vermont where I was the herdsman and social media manager for Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company for three and a half years. This past summer I moved to Western Massachusetts and worked for a few months as a Veterinary Assistant at a nearby small animal hospital. My background in dairy started when I was very young on my family’s farm, Hardy Farm in Maine. My parents are currently milking 45-50 head of Ayrshires with a few Holsteins. Through my years as a National Ayrshire Junior member, I received the Distinguished and Outstanding Ayrshire Youth Awards and was the 2007-2008 National Ayrshire Princess. It has been a dream of mine to work in the dairy industry, with and for the people that have the same kind of passion as I do. I have done many ad designs for my family, friends and colleagues that have been in a wide variety of publications and used as farm displays. I am thrilled to start working with the Purebred team and cannot wait to serve the breeders of the represented breeds in an industry that I am passionate about.
