Executive Secretary’s Annual Report

T

he Ayrshire Breeders’ Association had a successful convention at the Prairie Meadows Casino & Racetrack Hotel in Altoona, Iowa. Thanks to the Iowa Ayrshire Breeders’ Association members who worked hard to host a great event. Tom Fenton presided over the annual meeting which was held Friday, June 23, 2017.

Classification: A mini workshop was held in the spring, and the representatives were pleased with the consistency between the classifiers. The full committee will be invited to a workshop with all of the classifiers this fall. The ABA has recently been evaluated by PDCA for quality certification on the type data submitted to the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB). We did very well on the certification and will work with the other breeds to keep this high standard in place.

The Association reported a slight increase in net assets for the past year, with registrations and transfers holding relatively steady. In the election of officers, Tom Fenton of Winchester, Ohio, took over the reigns as president while Mark Valentine of Thurmont, Maryland, moved up to vice president. Three incumbents were re-elected to serve as director: Tom Gillette, Lyon Falls, New York; Mary Creek, Hagerstown, Maryland and Lloyd Machin, Newton, Iowa. The Board Promotion: Many projects are in the works involving promotion. 2017 Distinguished Service Award

T

he recipients of the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association 2017 Distinguished Service Award are being recognized for their dedicated service to the Ayrshire cow, association, and dairy industry. Our honorees, Jim and Sharon Tentinger, have demonstrated their dedication to the Ayrshire breed through many years of service and leadership. They were a team supporting and encouraging each other to use their talents to serve their family and the agricultural community. Their start in the Ayrshire fraternity began in 1976, when Jim took over the herd from his father, and by 1978 the herd was all registered Ayrshires. Ten-Ayr Dairy operated as a diversified operation as they farmed close to 2,500 acres with family members. Jim believed this diversification was vital in order to survive the volatility in the commodity markets. He was quoted as saying, “We spread out risk in different markets. This helps us work our way through changing times. Grain could be up one year, while milk is down. Diversifying production is the one thing that will allow us to survive risk.” Jim’s passion for the dairy and the Ayrshire cow were evident. He always enjoyed showing cattle, but was sometimes limited to getting the cattle ready with his other responsibilities with the farming operation. In the earlier days, Sharon would stay home and milk while he attended state sales and national conventions with his two sons, Travis and Craig. As his boys grew older, they started showing cattle at the Iowa State Fair. Jim felt a responsibility to be involved in the dairy industry and became very active.

He was elected to the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association Board of Directors in 2008 and then served terms as director, moving up to Vice President, and President. He was a pastpresident of the Iowa Ayrshire Club. Jim was elected to serve as a district and corporate board of the Midwest Dairy Association. He was a board member of the Iowa State Dairy Association, and a member of the Dairy Farmers Association. Jim strongly felt that if he grew and produced a product that was to be sold, then he needed to help promote that industry and product. Jim encouraged Sharon to become more active with the dairy industry. In addition to raising their sons and having off-farm employment, she became involved in Ayrshire activities on both the state and national level. They served as co-chairpersons for the 2003 and 2009 national Ayrshire conventions. One of Sharon’s talents is the ability to reach out and contact sponsors. They also served on the 2016 World Ayrshire Conference planning committee. Sharon has also been very involved in the formation and development of the U.S Ayrshire Breeders Foundation and has served on the board and as treasurer. Recently Sharon stepped up and has been crucial in planning an ABA membership campaign that will roll out later this summer. In their local community, the Tentingers also enjoyed giving farm tours to over 200 students each fall for over 21 years, and communicating to the public what it was like living on a dairy farm and the impact of agriculture. As many of us know, Jim was a natural leader, even though he didn’t see himself as

one. He was quoted as saying, “Someone else thinks I’m a leader. I just feel like it’s important to be involved.” Jim was visionary and had a knack for seeing the big picture, especially the need to get more milk and productivity out of our cows. Jim was thinker and when he spoke in a board meeting everyone listened intently. He was an honorable and respectable man, which made him a great board member and officer of the ABA organization. Jim was proud of the accomplishments he had with his Ayrshires but always said it was up to their sons if they wanted to take over the dairy. Due to the size of the dairy and the challenges of labor it was decided to sell the herd. What a family transition this has been. Craig said, “Dad is leaving and the cows are following…now it is time for a new legacy to begin.” Our recipients have been true stewards of the Ayrshire breed. They demonstrated this by their support of state and national sales as both consigners and buyers. They believed in the potential of the Ayrshire cow and in their own role in making breed progress. It is my honor and privilege to present the 2017 Ayrshire Breeders’ Association Distinguished Service Award to Jim and Sharon Tentinger of Remsen, Iowa.

2017 Master Breeder Award

As presented at the Annual Convention by Doug Murray Pictured: Doug Murray and Ray Jarrett

T

he 2017 Ayrshire Master Breeder Award is presented to Raymond Jarratt of Los Lunas, New Mexico. Raymond purchased his first Ayrshires in the early 1950s from Ohio Ayrshire breeders with the help from Ohio Ayrshire Association secretary, Griff Roberts. Over the years, Raymond acquired more Ayrshires from various farms across the Northeast, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Canada, through the assistance of Frank Wilson, who also worked for the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. He bought top animals from many sales, including animals from Brisklea Farms (Ralph Cooley), Claghorn’s Pinewood Farm, Ardrossan Farms, Lincolnshire Farm, and Oakridge. He chose Ayrshires at that time because milk was priced with 4% BF as the base, which was consistent with the Ayrshire breed. Because of the pricing of milk above and below 4% BF, producing milk exactly at 4% was the most profitable, and Ayrshires were the logical choice. Raymond’s primary goal has always been to breed and refine the commercial herd with an emphasis on components and strength. Shortly after, Raymond joined the Ayrshire Breeders’Association. He served as committee member, board member, vice president, and two separate terms as president over a broad expanse of years. Looking back, Raymond commented about the very first convention he and his wife attended. He said Merritt Cook and his wife made them feel very welcome and introduced them to people and helped to get their participation in the Association off to a good start. In the early to mid-1970s, the dairy July/August 2017

consisted of two separate herds with Ayrshires and Holsteins. Raymond thought that to be a “good” breeder he had to go with one breed or the other with registered cattle. He felt with the advantages of Ayrshires, they were the better breed to go with. At the time, he cited the advantages as the initial cost per animal were lower; there was greater income from higher components, lower maintenance costs, and the hardiness and tolerance to temperature changes. As the pricing structures changed, Ayrshires proved to be very efficient in utilizing feed for milk production. In the Shady-Dale commercial setting, the Ayrshires have proven to be highly resilient to widely fluctuating weather conditions. In New Mexico, their dry lot operation has experienced years of drought with temperatures at 105 degrees and 3% humidity and 40 degree temperature changes from day to night are typical. The Ayrshires demonstrated that they were very tolerant of that condition, more than any of the other breeds they had with them. The winters generally are snowy with hard freezes in late May, and winter daily temperature fluctuations almost matching that of summer, conditions which the cows also prove very tolerant. Jarratt found the newborn Ayrshire calves are very vigorous, up, moving and nursing quickly. The Ayrshire cow’s udder quality, hardiness, adaptability, and strong character are an essential combination for them in today’s commercial dairy. Shady-Dale Farms, LLC, is owned by Raymond and Fenella Jarratt, and their adult children: Karen, Ray Jr., and Janet. The

Shady-Dale herd was the largest registered Ayrshire herd in the U.S., milking around 350-360 head, yet they were the smallest dairy herd in the state of New Mexico. The herd was milked twice daily, with 320 cows averaging 53 pounds of milk per day in the heat of summer. Raymond also found a unique method of finding and retaining good and loyal employees. He found over the years that it is helpful to keep the families of employees close to increase their happiness. For Raymond, components were a very serious consideration when looking at what genetics to use in his herd. He felt strongly that feed and genetics go hand-in-hand. The only difference is that he has the ability to change and improve the genetics he uses, while sometimes feed quality consists of using the best available for the season. The Jarratts were always scouring the A.I. lists, looking for bulls that would provide outcross genetics for the herd, while continuing their tradition of high components and Ayrshire purity. With the infusion of outside genetics, Raymond’s goal was to continue breeding the herd to 100% even when the market forces were against him. He spent many hours talking to others about what bulls he should use. In recent years, the Jarratts made the commitment to participate in the classification program. On their first classification round, 219 cows were evaluated, including 95 first lactation cows, and 71 second lactation cows. There were nine Excellent, 98 Very Good, and 102 Good Plus cows. The average score Cont. on pg. 19

2017 Young Leader Award

A

dream doesn’t become reality through magic, it takes sweat, determination, and hard work,” is a quote by Colin Powell that can be applied to the accomplishments of our 2017 Outstanding Young Leader Award. He grew up on a small grade Holstein farm. By the time he was eight years of age, he knew that he wanted to farm, despite his dad telling him to explore other options. With his dad having three jobs to support the large family, he and his five siblings ranging in ages from five to 14 were left home to run the farm. Several years later the family was devastated to find out that the loyal, hardworking man was diagnosed with brain cancer. With the loss of this young man’s father came an even stronger drive that not many 18-year-olds have. Fast forward five years to 2004 and this now 23-year-old, his fiancé, Kiley, and their three-year-old daughter bought his family’s farm. The couple quickly renovated the small barn to milk, but not cows, yes, he even dabbled into milking goats for about a year. After realizing him and the goats didn’t click, the couple sold the herd of goats and converted the barn back to 30 tie stalls to start

milking cows. In addition to caring for a herd of milk cows, he also had a job off the farm pouring walls. As years went on the couple got married, had a son, Gavin, and expanded the family farm by adding a heifer and dry cow barn and another 46 tie stalls. The new family began regularly attending state and national Ayrshire shows, sales, and meetings. This was just the beginning of the man’s love for the Ayrshire cow as he started learning the people, genetics, and the countless perks of the breed. Day by day, he continues to impress others by his commitment and determination to the Ayrshire breed. He has been on ABA Breed Improvement Committee and currently serves on the ABA Marketing Committee. He has been involved in the Wisconsin Ayrshire Spring Sale and the annual World Ayrshire Event Sale held at World Dairy Expo. He assisted at the recent Shady-Dale dispersal in New Mexico, where he helped with the dispersal of nearly 100 animals to states all across the U.S. If you talk to him, he will quickly tell you that he pushes for production on the farm. The family has invested in many foundation

animals and have been showing, flushing, and marketing them and offspring from these families. His “keen” eye for cattle is documented by the achievements of animals that he has purchased and developed along with their offspring. Purchases of DiamondRidge Poker’s Hayla, Sharwards Ashlyn, Daltondale Dilligent Ashley, Old-Bankston Poker Mystery, and Don Haven BBBK Tipsy have resulted in multiple “E” Excellent cows, 20,000-30,000 pound lactations, production awards, French Trophy awards, and national show and All-American placings. Damian’s ET program has produced progeny and embryos that have been sold in state and national sales and gone on to be receive national show and All-American awards. The future of Ullmstar Genetics looks bright as their daughter, Mackenzie, has big plans as she works side by side with her father every day. He is an inspiration to his family and many others as he strives to be an excellent ambassador for our breed. It is my honor and privilege to present the 2017 Ayrshire Breeders’ Association Outstanding Young Leader Award to Damian Ullmer.

Queen’s Corner

H

ello! My name is Mackensie Schofield, and I am 16 years old. I live with my parents and my two sisters on the Happy Acres Farm in Troy, Maine. We are currently milking 27 cows out of a herd size of 54. Of those 54, half are Jerseys with the other half being Holsteins, three Ayrshires and a Guernsey. The oldest Ayrshire, Hardy Farm Riggins Esmae, I co-own with my uncle because he had to pull her off organic production when she became really sick. He gave me the option that if I took her to my farm I could co-own her with him and also get her next heifer calf. After being at my farm for a year, Esmae calved, giving me heifer, Hardy Farm Brazil Elegant, my first bred and owned Ayrshire last winter. Elegant is now bred and due next spring. Two years ago I bought a fall calf, Hardy Farm Pride Kaylee, from my aunt and uncle when they gave me the pick out of all of their fall calves. I took her to the Eastern National and showed her in the 4-H, open and junior shows. In the 4-H show she was Reserve Grand Champion. She was pulled out for Junior Champion in the open and junior show, and was Honorable Mention of the junior show. She then went on to win Reserve Junior All-American Fall Calf. She freshened in March of this year and in May she classified VG-86. In the past I have owned several other Ayrshires, but most of them I have had to sell because we did not have enough space for them. If it wasn’t for my aunt and uncle owning Ayrshires I probably would not have bought my Ayrshires. I would not have this wonderful opportunity of being National Ayrshire Queen and Distinguished Youth if my aunt and uncle had not pushed and helped me find my first Ayrshire. I started looking for a dairy breed other than Jerseys or Holsteins to show because I was tired of competing against my sisters. So, what first started as a chance for me to try something new, became one of my biggest passions and it’s because of my involvement with Ayrshires that I am where I am today. My goal is to go to veterinary school, but I still hope to continue to own Ayrshires because I love everything about the breed and am very passionate about cows in general. Even though I am the only person in my household that likes the Ayrshires I continue to push my mom and dad to let me bring more Ayrshires into the herd.

The Royal Court L-R: Princess Kourtney Kempkes, NE; Hope Hazelton, OH: Megan Caruso, ME and Queen Mackensie Schofield, ME.

The Distinguished Youth Award was presented to Mackensie Schofield. Additional Outstanding Youth were Paige Demun and Kelton Tanguay.

Thank you to ST Genetics for the generous program and donation of $1,610 to the Youth Fund! Thank you to all the contributors and purchasers at the youth Fun Auction which raised $6,355 for the Youth Fund!

T

he 2017 Grand National Convention Sale was held on June 24 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa. Sale chairs David Koss, Dane Lang and Donna Mertz put together a consistently correct lineup of cattle with 36 animals, six embryo lots and two semen lots. The sale averaged just slightly over $2,400 on live lots, while embryos averaged $492 per embryo. Cowbuyer.com was present and brought in many purchases and bids through their online bidding service. Pedigrees were read by Eric Lang while Neal Laneville auctioned off the great group of cattle. Striking up lots of conversation was Lot 6, Bonert Berkely Robin 204 who was the high seller for the afternoon sale. The fantasticuddered cow stood on the end of the pack in the line-up so everyone could see her. Not hard to miss, the Berkely daughter was fresh in April and currently has a low SCC of 13,000 and had a 2-03 record of 305D 20,015M 4.1% 811F 3.2% 633P. A Sr. Three-Year-Old for the 2017 shows, she was consigned by Matt Bonert of Epworth, Iowa, and was purchased for $6,500 by Eric Lang of Brooklyn, Iowa. The gavel was brought down with the second-highest bid of the day on Lot 36, a sweet little March calf from the lovely SweetPepper Senator Hokusai, EX-94 3E who was Unanimous All-American Aged Cow in 2013 and All-World in the Six and Seven Year-Old class in 2013. Polled Ayrshire Genetics By Robin Alden

P

olled: it has emerged in recent years as not just a unique trait or a convenience to farmers, but in some cases, a market demand. A recent consumer interest in animal welfare has led to a desire for a reduction in stressful practices, including dehorning young calves. Polled genetics also benefit the farmer in multiple ways – reduced time and expense of veterinarian visits, increased safety, and potentially reduced stress in calves. The Ayrshire breed has a deep history in polled genetics, which has given them an advantage over certain breeds. Many Ayrshire breeders of varying focus have incorporated polled genetics into their herds, and successfully so. Polled genetics have shown to increase value in cattle and product – and Ayrshires have an opportunity that any breeder can take advantage of. What is “polled,” anyway? The “polled” gene is a dominant gene that prevents horn growth in cattle. An animal who is naturally polled, or lacking in horns, can have either one or two copies of this gene. If the animal has two copies of the gene, then all of their offspring will inherit the gene, and therefore be polled. If the animal has just one copy, then there is a 50% chance their offspring will inherit the gene. (www.polleddairycattle.com). Genetics show that ancestors of modern-day cattle actually did not have horns, and that horns were developed later to aid in the protection of cattle from predators. (“Polled Holstein History,” Dr. Larry W. Specht, The Pennsylvania State University, 2008). There are many different strains of the polled gene, but it is a consistently dominant trait. In the modern age of domesticated cattle, horns are no longer a necessity, but rather a danger and inconvenience, and the naturally polled gene can enable farmers to avoid it entirely. Polled Ayrshires – a History It is believed that all current registered, polled Ayrshires can trace their ancestry back to the bull Prince Perhaps of Bart, born in 1936, whose polled gene came from his dam Dot’s Polled Polly. Polly’s sire, Armours Asa of Sand Hill, had small, underdeveloped horns, called “scurs,” that were a precursor to the polled trait. In the 1940s, an “X” at the beginning of a registration number was added to denote a polled Ayrshire (as opposed to its current designation as a foreign animal). This was as a result of an article in The Ayrshire Digest in March 1944 by Ralph E. Lewis, who desired that polled cattle be indicated somehow on the registration paper. “It seems to me that there is a bigger interest in dehorning than ever before, and since there are a few naturally polled Ayrshires I believe that it would be to the advantage of many breeders to know of their presence in a pedigree,” wrote Lewis. In the1940s, the appearance of horns was a focus for many pedigree breeders, but others envisioned the future of the industry and actively utilized polled genetics. “The first person to really push the polled gene heavily was Greenrange Farm of Tom Whittaker in Vermont,” recalls Donald Benson, formerly with the U.S. Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. Benson remembers that the polled Ayrshires of this time period were not always competitive with their horned herdmates. “Then around 1970, Dan Murphy developed a Selwood Betty’s Commander son named Senelakeca Betty Chad. This bull threw daughters with type and production.” Chad went on to sire several Excellent daughters and at least one All-American after semen was distributed by ABA. Another greatly influential polled sire was Plum-Bottom Reward Lennon, born in 1998. For years, Lennon was the only polled Ayrshire available in commercial AI through Taurus. Due to the limited availability until recent years, polled Ayrshire genetics can often trace their lineage back to the same small group of cattle.

Polled Ayrshire bulls are out there! Ayrshire breeders today enjoy a variety of polled bulls to choose from. Several different AI companies have made the investment into polled Ayrshire genetics. The only current commercially available 100% Ayrshire polled bull is Hawksfield Jamison P *TF at Accelerated Genetics, a promising young Burdette son out of an EX-92 2E polled dam with records over 32,000M 1,150F and 1,040P. His type and health traits closely follow what you’d expect from Burdette, with the added bonus of no horns! Taurus-ST customers can also buy semen from another polled Burdette son, Plum-Bottom Burdette Ryder *TF. Ryder shows positives for production and components and is out of a VG-87 Lennon. For those looking beyond Burdette, Margot Caterpillar P-ET at Semex is a polled Ned son from an EX-90 CAN BB Kellogg. His genomic proof shows strong numbers in milk and components, Net Merit $ and productive life. More and more polled Ayrshire bulls are also being released under private collection or smaller companies, and with a variety of type, health and production traits. Why polled? Ask a breeder! Many Ayrshire breeders have begun experimenting with polled genetics in their herd, while several others have made it a priority. Dan Carpenter of Michigan began his Ayrshire herd with a polled cow, Lanes-End Hillary, in the 1990s. Hillary comes from an outcross line, making her descendants valuable in bringing new genetics into the polled Ayrshire herd. Carpenter only keeps homebred heifers who are horned intermittently to serve as recipients for polled embryos. His entire herd is polled, with the exception of these recipient heifers, and the occasional high-pedigree cow who is brought in and bred to polled genetics to produce outcross polled bulls. “Polled is my top trait priority,” says Carpenter, but he also looks for a balance of productive type, calm temperament and preferable milk proteins. He mainly uses his own homebred polled bulls, due to the outcross factor. “It is my ultimate goal to produce a bull which will represent a new, outcross production line for Ayrshire breeders.” Ferme Margot Ayrshire of Canada is known for show ring greats, and their newly released Caterpillar P at Semex has emerged as an index giant. They cite “biodiversity” as their reason for introducing polled genetics to their elite herd four years ago.

Ayrshire through the Vermont Ayrshire sale in 2010. The bred heifer was carrying CR-Farm Ansel Honor, EX-90, also polled. “Our polled cows are as good [as], if not better than, our horned cows,” said Lawton. At Oake Knoll, Lawton breeds for the “complete cow,” including high butterfat, dairy strength and good temperament. Lawton has also begun marketing semen from polled sons and grandsons of CR-Farm Julio’s Nerissa, EX-91 2E, with 175,000M lifetime, who was purchased at the Huntington Farm dispersal. Besides just building from quality polled Ayrshires like Honor and Nerissa, Lawton is also using polled bulls on high-scoring and producing non-polled cattle to achieve her goal of breeding “polled, purebred, even-tempered Ayrshire cows” that produce well and look good. Whether it’s to reduce stress on calves, appease consumer demands, or to add marketing value to your herd, polled genetics offers a diverse and exciting way to improve your Ayrshire herd. Special thanks to those who provided their knowledge and research for this article: Donald Benson, Dan Carpenter, Marjorie Rida, Terri Lawton and Charles Sayles. Master cont. from pg. 7

was 84.4 and of the Excellent cows, 30% of them were sired by their own

bulls. The second time with the classifier, the herd again excelled with 132 cows evaluated with 47 first lactation cows and 46 second lactation cows. The average score was 85.6 with 13 Excellent, 77 Very Good, and 42 Good Plus. Over the years, Raymond and his family have made giving back to their community a priority. Between Raymond and his daughter, Janet, who also shares a passion for agriculture, they enjoy sharing their education and knowledge with other FFA and agriculture students. They took on a project turning some state-owned land that had gone into desert back to farm land. The idea was for the students to learn about soils, soil building, and growing hay. Raymond was very inspirational to these kids, as he is to many other people who know him. As Shady-Dale Farm dispersed, Raymond stated, “The qualities of components, strength, resiliency, and adaptability are what kept us going.” Please join me in congratulating Raymond Jarratt as we present him with the 2017 Ayrshire Master Breeder Award.

The US Ayrshire Breeders Foundation reported a successful year for 2016. With great pleasure, they are awarding a $3,000 grant to the Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association for their ‘Beginning in Ayrshires’ project. The project assists new breeders with their first Ayrshire purchase. Dick Witter, PA and Doug Fenton, OH were elected to three-year terms on the Foundation committee. The quilt, donated and designed by Diana Machin, IA was auctioned and sold for $750 to Doug Evans, NY with all proceeds to benefit the Foundation. The Foundation will be publishing a newsletter soon with all of their latest news. Stay tuned!

2017/2018 Ayrshire yeArbook submission Form

Page Size - 5.5 x 8.5 inches • Pictures - Full Color Cost - $100 per animal, or $75 per animal with 4 or more Deadline - August 18, 2017

Promote the best cows and heifers in your herd, along with a color photo for each, pedigree/production information and anything else noteworthy about the animal. The cost is just $100 per animal, or a discounted rate of $75 per cow when you advertise four or more. Every Ayrshire herd in the U.S. should be represented in the Year Book, whether it be your high producers, flush cows, show cows, promising heifers and more! Bulls with semen being marketed may also be advertised in the Yearbook!

The Seventh Annual Ayrshire Yearbook will be published in September in time for the fall national shows. The Yearbook is the perfect way to highlight some of the most prominent and influential Ayrshire females in the breed. It will also be published online at www.usayrshire.com and used for promotional purposes throughout the next 12 months at each event where the U.S. Ayrshire Breeders’ Association is represented, including international activities.
