Executive Director’s Report I’ve been looking at some statistics lately and talking with experts in the field of dairy records concerning information that is interesting for the Ayrshire breed, and yet also troubling at the same time.

The number of units of Ayrshire semen sold domestically tells an entirely different story than our limited number of registrations performed each year suggests. According to the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB), nearly 40,000 units of Ayrshire semen were sold across the country. World Wide Sires reported to us several months ago that Ayrshire was their number three breed for semen export sales last year. This data reinforces what we already know – the Ayrshire breed obviously provides breeders with genetics that perform well in commercial settings.

Our breed is also considered broadly across the industry to have the highest percentage of cows not on test and not classified. Keep in mind that I’m not talking about gross numbers; I’m talking about the percentage of animals recognized as Ayrshires. Why is this?

I have my own theory, and I believe these statistics also back up what we all enjoy the most about our cow. The Ayrshire is efficient, can thrive in a wide variety of environments including those with very little management, and she’s vigorous requiring less veterinary and medical care. All of these traits that we love about our cow also have great appeal to producers who might be considered outside of the mainstream traditional Ayrshire breeder environment; therefore this reflection is made in our statistics within the dairy industry.

Some of this information we must acknowledge and take in stride while identifying the areas where we can make a positive impact. The first area to me is classification. I’m sure many of you have read the ABA classification rules and noticed that one requirement to participate in classification is that you must score all first and second lactation cows. Linear type information on younger cows (first and second lactation) has greater impact on type evaluations than older cows. We know that classification is very subjective, and the evaluators who are trained in this program do their best to be consistent. Utilizing data from more herds and more total cows gives greater reliability in type evaluations.

I challenge all who do not classify to make it a goal for 2018! The investment is not much in the big scheme of things. If you participate in the ABA Rewards Program, the fees to classify are included in the program costs. For others, the fee is $12 per cow or a minimum $110 herd fee. The classifiers will report to your area every seven months, so you must take advantage of participating when they are in your region (see complete 2018 schedule in this Digest).

The Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association administers the program for us, and they do all of the scheduling as well.

Please note that beginning in 2018, the process to sign up for classification will be a more streamlined process. In the past, a notice was mailed for each tour to all who had done business with the ABA in the last year. This has become an expensive and cumbersome process. Going forward, we will rely on electronic reminders (email, web sites and Facebook) as well as printing the schedules in the breed publications.

Breeders will be able to email, fax and mail their applications directly to the Brown Swiss Association. The application is available on the ABA web site or upon request.

Acknowledging the need for more data reinforces what the ABA board and staff has been shouting from the rooftops! Individual breeders must tell our story, tell it correctly, and tell it often. We can be our own best advocates.

honored Sharwards Calimero Megan EX-94 2E. Five New England-owned two-year-olds competed in this year’s futurity. Coming to the top was Sweet-Pepper Prime Hussy, a Prime daughter from a VG-88 Poker owned by Craig and Bonnie Hawksley.

Winning the Five-Year-Old class and the title of Senior Champion was Blue-Spruce Showstar 10819 EX-92 for Blue Spruce Farm. Also from Blue Spruce Farm was the winning Aged Cow and Reserve Senior Champion, Blue-Spruce Baltimore 9822 EX-93. Previously, 9822 was nominated All-American as a Spring Yearling and was Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Eastern States National in 2014.

Judge Cull went with the Intermediate Champions for Grand and Reserve of the show.

Grand Champion selection was the cow that Judge Cull also made best udder of the show, Ridale Nemo Serenity-ET. Serenity, owned by Marjorie and Ryan Rida, is a VG-88 daughter of Geminaecho Showstar Shirley EX-91, and was also Reserve All-American Junior Two-Year-Old in 2016. Serenity was also named Best Bred and Owned, and later the Virtual Supreme Champion of the Big E! Reserve Intermediate and Grand Champion was another daughter of Beau Lac Nemo-ET, Blue-Spruce Nemo 12821-ET for Blue Spruce Farm. The VG-87 Senior Two-Year-Old is from an EX-92 Burdette.

The winning 100,000 Pound Cow also claimed the Total Performance award for Beverly Donovan of Benton, Maine. Legacy-Lane Sams Bloom EX-93 2E has 157,549 pounds of milk

with 8,159 pounds of fat and 5,019 pounds of protein in five records. She repeated this title from 2016.

Eastern States National Junior Show

By Kayla King The Junior Ayrshire show at the Eastern States Exposition was held on September 21st and judged by Kelli Cull of Wisconsin. Junior Champion of the show was awarded to Tyler S Woodman of Claremont, New Hampshire, who owned the winning Spring Calf, Woodman-Farm Barrel Gabby.

By Cheri Oechsle he Mid-Atlantic National Ayrshire Show was held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on September 18 with Judge Jeff Stephens of Yellow Briar Farm, Canada. There were 124 head that paraded through the ring.

Stephens selected his Spring Yearlings for top heifer banners. By Cheri Oechsle he International Ayrshire Show kicked off the festivities of the week-long World Dairy Expo. The first show of the week, it was one that exceeded expectations. Quality cattle from across the U.S. and Canada, along with the pomp and circumstance of the show and the judging team of Allyn “Spud” Paulson and associate Kurt Wolf, lived up to the anticipation.

Paulson, from Juneau, Wisconsin, and Wolf, from Epworth, Iowa, tackled the immense responsibility of placing the 273 head of Ayrshires. After 169 heifers crossed the aquacolored shavings, their top heifers were left holding court. Paulson congratulated the leadsmen of his top two Spring Yearlings as Junior and Reserve Junior Champions. Old-N-Lazy Gentle Wipeout-ET, the first-place Spring Yearling owned by the partnership of Peter Vail, Mike and Linda Hellenbrand and Frank and Diane Borba of Cross Plains, Wisconsin, is a Duo Star Gentleman daughter. She is out of an EX-92 2E Remington dam. The second-place Spring Yearling and Reserve Junior Champion went to Marilie Reality Mellini-ET, a Reality daughter owned by Brady McConnell of Whitewater, Wisconsin. “What a nice group of heifers out here today,” said Paulson after congratulating the winners. “That first prize Spring Yearling, what a heifer, it’s hard to beat her today,” Paulson said of his champion.

The Intermediate Champions both hail from Maryland. Paulson selected his first-prize Senior Three-Year-Old, Palmyra Berkely P RuthET as Intermediate and De La Plaine Vicking Lady as Reserve Champion. The Unanimous

In his remarks, Judge Paulson said “When this cow came in the ring I looked at Kurt and said, ‘Do you think anything is going to beat her?’ And Kurt said, ‘I don’t think so.’ This cow… a cow that calves back every 11 months, is a pretty cool rig. She will be your Grand today.”

Queen’s Corner Hello, everyone!!

I hope you have all done well at the shows this year. I wish I could have made it to Harrisburg, but I hope to make it to Louisville! I had so much fun at Eastern States and at World Dairy Expo!

I was hoping to have some of my own Ayrshires at Eastern States but something came up and my Aunt and Uncle (they were trucking my cows) couldn’t make it. I met some new people at Eastern States, but my favorite part was watching the show and seeing all the wonderful cows everyone brought out.

It was a pleasure working beside the Massachusetts Ayrshire Princess, Caitlyn Small, at the Eastern National. Thank you, Carl Foland, for allowing me the opportunity to show your winter calf in the showmanship class.

The World Dairy Expo was amazing! Other than waiting at the airport to fly to Madison where our plane was delayed two hours, causing us to miss our connecting flight in Chicago, and not making it to Madison until midnight the night before the show,

it was a good trip. The show was marvelous! Even though I had a lot of fun handing out the awards during the show, I loved just watching the show and being up close to all the amazing animals. Just to be able to walk around the barns and see all the amazing cows was an experience of a lifetime. It was a pleasure to meet the Miss United States Agriculture and the Mrs. United States Agriculture at World Dairy Expo.

I hope that someday I will be able to compete at World Dairy Expo with my Ayrshires, but I know it takes time and effort to get good quality cows. ~Mackensie Schofield, National Ayrshire Queen

Pay It Forward…

Shayr-A-Heifer

By Becky Payne and Janelle Watson The Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association has developed their own brand of investing in the future of youth and the Ayrshire breed. Standing the test of time since the early 1970s, the Wisconsin ShayrA-Heifer program should inspire all breeders to develop our own innovative way (or borrow theirs) to give youth a taste of what our breed has to offer.

The Shayr-A-Heifer program was designed to give young people the opportunity to work with a registered Ayrshire as a project animal, but perhaps don’t have the resources to buy one on their own. The WABA believes that if they can help youth with the first step in purchasing an Ayrshire heifer, they will want to continue working with registered Ayrshires.

The ultimate goal is to not only put an Ayrshire into a herd, but also for the Ayrshire to compete with any other breeds present.

The WABA has put together requirements for the sire and dam that will allow the calf to excel in any dairy environment.

Ownership of the animal is a 50/50 split between the WABA and the selected junior. The contract ends after two years, at which time the junior member has the choice to either sell the animal at the Wisconsin Ayrshire Spring Sale for 50% of the proceeds, or simply buy out the remaining half. The heifers used for the program are spring calves, making them suitable show projects for youth.

During the two-year contract, the junior members are able to exhibit their heifer at county and state shows. Along with exhibiting their Ayrshire, the youth are encouraged to complete a scrapbook and a short essay to showcase their work and their heifer’s show placings. Awards for completion of the project and scrapbook include recognition at the annual meeting, a plaque and cash prizes.

The participating juniors are also encouraged to breed their heifer during the two years.

They are given advice from the WABA on a prime age to breed their heifer and resources for what bulls to choose. At the end of the contract, the junior members almost always buy the heifers outright because they have developed a relationship with their animals and increased their knowledge of the breed.

There are very few scenarios where the heifer is sold at the Wisconsin Spring Sale.

Lily Charapata & Sugar is now an active breeder who got her start with Ayrshires through the Shayr-A-Heifer program in 1989. Monica reminisces about that time saying, “I was from a Holstein farm in the beginning. Dad asked each of us kids to pick a different breed and learn about it.” Monica chose the Ayrshire breed, and through her 4-H program learned of the Shayr-A-Heifer program. She applied, and

the rest as they say is history. Monica feels that her experience was extra special as the Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ also assigned each participant a mentor, and she got Tom Dalton. She made a personal connection with Tom and John Dalton, and in that same year purchased two additional heifers from them. Monica feels that the mentor aspect

My Story ABA Executive Director Becky Payne interviews Linda Hanson of Goodridge, Minnesota With this Digest following on the heels of the World Dairy Expo, the timing is perfect to catch up with Good-Vue Farm of Minnesota. Mike and Linda Hanson and their family were featured in a virtual farm tour sponsored by Lely during Expo. In addition to their accomplishments as progressive Ayrshire breeders, the Hansons have been innovative in their dairy’s expansion efforts. Last year they moved into a new freestall facility complete with two Lely A4 automatic milking systems and a Lely Vector automatic feeding system.

Their oldest son David and his wife Ashley, a veterinarian specializing in ET work, also have interests in the farm but do not currently live or work there.

In September of 2016 the Hansons moved their registered Ayrshires from a 40-cow tie stall barn to a new 120 free stall facility that includes two Lely A4 milking robots, and a Vector robotic feeding system.

In addition, the family farms 2,700 acres with 320 acres dedicated to corn for silage and hay for the dairy herd.

The balance is cash grain crops of spring wheat, soybeans and malting barley.

They also raise their own heifers. Labor

is nearly all family with a high school girl part-time some evenings and custom hiring of corn chopping. Mike’s dad, at 88, still runs tractors and combines.

Q A

What factors prompted you to consider expansion and ultimately integrating this type of operation?

Since 1994, we milked in a late ‘70s model 40-cow tie stall barn with a bed pack shed for overrun.

Dry cow facilities were limited, and it was difficult to transition cows as we would like. Heifer facilities were also maxxed out. As the boys attended and then finished college, they made it known they were interested in continuing in production agriculture. At that time, we began considering ways to bring them into the business. Land was extremely competitive, and we all liked the dairy cattle so we began looking at ways to expand there. We wanted a system that would complement our crop farming, eliminate or at least reduce the need for employees, and be technologically advanced.

Robots were the easy decision. The feed system took more convincing; but after touring systems in Canada and pushing numbers as well as considering less tangible, but attractive advantages, we chose to install the Vector as well.

The barn has two Lely A4 robots and four rows totaling 120 stalls with waterbeds for lactating cows. Bedding is wood shavings acquired locally. There is a separate fifth row with 36 free stalls for dry and close-up cows, two large maternity pens for calving and two spe-

cial needs pens, one of which currently houses baby calves from birth to about six weeks. Manure is handled with automatic scrapers which drop manure into a cross barn flume, flushed into a large holding tank and pumped into a storage lagoon. The battery powered TMR mixer and crane and grabber feeding system is housed in a “kitchen” on the east end of the barn. There is also a shop on the east end.

Q A

Were there environmental concerns to address with the expansion?

We’re fortunate that the area we live in is low population, very rural and not too uptight regarding livestock agriculture. For the most part, our neighbors were pleased to see our kids coming home and dairy remaining in the community. We still needed to meet MPCA requirements and a county ordinance that is not very strict. Our engineer did the permitting submission.

Our soils allowed us to get approved with only a packed clay liner for the new lagoon; and approval by our county feedlot officer after the engineer signed off was quick and simple. We have a lot of acres to spread manure, so concentration is not an issue. We are currently working on an MWQCP certification that gives us a state approval, protecting us from regulatory changes for at least 10 years.

balanced for milk production and lactation stage. The robotic mixer dispenses PMR usually 10 to 12 times a day based on feed disappearance. In other words, if it scans and finds the manger nearly empty, it will return to the feed kitchen and mix a fresh batch, then deliver and dispense it in the empty manger. It also mixes a separate ration for the dry cows as needed, as well as a ration for the close-up group. The system can be programmed for up to 16 different rations.

Q A

Do you look at mating decisions differently to address traits that are of higher importance with a robotic system?

We have always focused on both production traits and good type in our breeding decisions. With the robot, attention to milking speed and teat placement is taking on a new importance. Though the robot is remarkable at attaching on all kinds of udders, cows with extremely close rear teats, especially as they get stale, can increase failures and therefore increase fetch cows and cows needing assistance.

As we approach a point of full capacity or more, milking speed becomes critical as slow cows increase average box time and limit the number of cows and pounds/minute produced, key factors in robot efficiency.

Q A

Have you noticed an impact on production since the expansion?

We did see an increase in milk production from the start, though not as significantly as our early goals had hoped. This has recently changed with the many cows that have entered the new facility, gone dry and are now freshening again. These animals are performing much better and production has started to edge up again.

Today we sit at a little over a 15-pound increase since moving in a year ago. The feeding system is still a work in progress with learning to balance bunks and

energy, yet we are confident in our ability to feed cows consistently and for efficient production.

Q

I know you have added some Holsteins to the herd to increase your cow numbers in the expansion. Do you notice any specific advantages or challenges between the breeds with this system?

A

We knew we would need to purchase some cattle to get closer to full capacity sooner. When the opportunity came up to purchase the Daggett-Brook Ayrshire and Holstein herd, we jumped at the chance. We also purchased a few heifers from a local Holstein breeder and three nice heifers from John Dalton. A few of those animals came to us prior to start-up with the rest delivered the same day we moved our herd into the new barn. We have been pleased with the smooth transition and adjustment both herds have made. All of the Ayrshires learned to use the free stalls and headlocks immediately as did most of the Holsteins. quick learners and slow learners from both breeds, but the first animal to use the robot all by herself was an Ayrshire.

A year in, both breeds are performing well, learning and using the robots willingly and getting better every day.

Q A

Has the integration of robotics made an impact in your personal lives, such as more time for hobbies, etc?

I would like to say we have all kinds of free time now with robots milking and feeding the cows. The reality is that we have had a lot to learn in the past year and probably havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t completely tapped the time advantages robots can offer. Our time is used differently with more flexibility and ability to focus on cow management but there is still cow care to do.

Cash cropping 2,700 acres has many demands from seed time to harvest, so that keeps us busy through the summer as well. However, we can take care of three times as many cows with much less physical labor or additional help. As necessary, someone can manage cows all alone. It will be interesting to see as we wind down the field work season and move into our second winter with robots how we can better enjoy the benefits of robotic milking. A personal advantage Mike and I have discovered is that when we are away from home, we no longer receive the phone call from the boys asking how to fix something...they know more about the milking equipment than we do now!

is important so that kids have a person to ask any questions they have. Today Monica and her husband Jeremy have a commercial dairy that includes Ayrshires, and they can always be found offering support to all dairy youth.

The WABA has increased their marketing and advertisement efforts of the program and the breed in general over the years. The Shayr-A-Heifer program has been advertised in the 4-H newsletter, “The Clover Line,” which covers all 72 counties in the state of Wisconsin. The association has also reached out to Wisconsin FFA chapters to market Ayrshires and get more youth involved with the breed. Exhibiting at county fairs is also a great way to market the breed to the people who don’t have Ayrshires.

Each year many applications are evaluated, and the winners have done a great job in raising their Ayrshires. Many of the farms and breeders who are members of the WABA got their start in Ayrshires through the Shayr-A-Heifer program. “We have always had tremendous results with this program,” says Bill Kolaske of the Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association, “It’s a great way to get youth involved with the Ayrshire breed.”

World Ayrshire Event Sale

By Robin Alden he World Ayrshire Event sale was held on the evening of October 4, 2017 at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. Fourteen head of the country’s finest Ayrshires averaged $3,889 each, making it a memorable event. The sale was managed by the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association and Tradition Auction Services, LLC. Lynn Lee served as the auctioneer, while Neal Smith read pedigrees. Live viewing and bidding was also available on Cowbuyer.com.

The high seller of this year’s event was Stillmore Gentle Ina, a Junior Two-Year-Old who went through the sale ring just hours after a fourth-place finish at the International Ayrshire Show. The VG-88 Gentleman daughter was also a class winner at the Minnesota State Fair for consignor Stillmore Cattle Co. of Pine Island, Minnesota. She is out of a Nominated All-American, VG-88 Pretty Boy daughter, and goes back to Stillmore Laro Isabella EX-94, two-time Reserve All-American.

Struck off at $7,900, she is now the property of Mike Beltz of Lake City, Minnesota.

The second-high seller of the day was added after placing third and first junior in the Four-Year-Old class at the International Ayrshire Show. Hi-Ayr-View Free Beer Me, recently scored Excellent, was consigned by Down & Dirty – Alexis Williams, Mabel, Minnesota, and KCCK – Kaleb, Cole & Carter Kruse of Dyersville, Iowa, and

has also had a successful show season at the Wisconsin Spring Show and Iowa State Fair this year. The Free Beer daughter is projected to make 27,000M and over 1,100F this lactation, and sold on service to Predator.

She was purchased by Hayley and Audrey Souza of Milbank, South Dakota for $7,600.

Four embryo lots comprised of 16 total embryos averaged an impressive $508 per embryo as well. The high-selling embryo lot was a very exciting consignment from Erin Curtis-Szalach of Cazenovia, New York – an offering of three #1 IVF embryos by a mutually agreeable sire and out of Cedarcut Burdette Clove Colata EX-93, the perennial show-winner and high-CPI cow. Colata’s show winnings are a mile long, and her legacy will continue in Canada, as the package was purchased by Bob Tolhurst of Vankleel Hill, Ontario, for $950 per embryo.
