PRESIDENT’S CORNER Gettysburg! What a close-up revisit of our history. What indifference. What a reunion of reality. So many lives for a cultural cause. What courage. What hatred. Thanks to Mid-Atlantic for a good convention and national sale. Kudos to Arbaughs, Bendigs, Heeters, Kollers, and all others. Job well done. Thanks also to retiring board members Mike Bodey, Mike Halpin, Jason Heeter, and John Kuszlyk. Your service is appreciated. As your newly elected President, I likewise welcome Bill Bartlett, Marcia Clark, Clint Cribbet and Marjorie Kuszlyk. And, Scott Cailteux for his re-election. As directors we must labor to maintain our position in the industry. The dairy industry is undergoing major transition to large commercial dairymen and small self-contained producer-processor operations. Those survivors are not going to invest in registrations, transfers and society programs unless they are correct, economical and easily obtained. We must be careful not to “rule” ourselves out of business, into oblivion, and on to the rare species list. We must be a tad more inclusive and less exclusive. However, on a more serious note, there appears to be animosity in the ranks and in business in general. We seem happy to find fault very quickly. Is there anything in today’s society that doesn’t spawn protest? If I wanted to hand out $20 bills on the corner someone would want two $10s. There’s no victory in this atmosphere, only conflict. So let’s start the healing. New directors: strap on your protective gear and let’s get started. Additionally, we need to continue pursuing joint efforts with Brown Swiss, Ayrshire and Guernsey. We already utilize the same publisher and classification comes under the Brown Swiss umbrella. Lab work is also a commonality. Services can be consolidated to better serve each breed. Collectively, we can be more efficient and ideally timelier. It will also be a great service to those with multiple breeds. This can only improve our service and cost. Actually, time will prove that we need each other. Each breed needs to formulate plans to establish this end that they don’t become a sad commentary to our history. We will need to work collectively. Let’s not wait, we don’t have to be partners or roommates to make it work, just skilled people with common goals. Internally, we are structured somewhat differently, but this too can be overcome. If managed, we certainly have the people, cattle, and resources to survive and prosper. We need to pursue mutual assistance and shared endeavors. I heard a story recently of a man who developed a common psychosis. He simply could not sleep at night. He had a nightly fear that someone was under his bed to get him. It affected him terribly, so he visited a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist told him it was a rather common malady. A fear that he could cure in three visits at $150 per visit. On his way home from that office, he stopped at his local pub and related his story to the bartender; asking the barman if that wasn’t a lot of money to pay. The bartender told him he could cure his problem for $10. “Wow, how?” exclaimed the local. “Cut the legs off your bed,” he said. I hope we don’t have to modify furniture to cure our maladies. As Truthway Rhoades, a southern Underground Railroad advocate once said, “The system is not all bad, it just got a little weevil in it.” We have good cattle and strong resources. We just need some tweaking. There is no Lincoln, so WE must create the peace. And we don’t need any loose cannons right now. We are not blue and gray. We are Red, White and Roan. ~ Tom All rights reserved. No reproduction of any material featured in the Milking Shorthorn Journal may be used without the written consent of Purebred Publishing. Minutes from the 97th Annual Meeting The 97th annual meeting of the American Milking Shorthorn Society was called to order at 10:48 a.m.on Friday, June 16, 2017 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by President Scott Cailteux. Jason Heeter welcomed the group to Pennsylvania and thanked everyone for attending. Credentials Committee chairperson Casey Weiss performed the roll call of delegates. All districts were present. A motion was made and seconded to seat the delegates. Motion passed. A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes from the 96th annual meeting with no changes. Motion passed. Andrea Haines from Hoard’s Dairyman was introduced. President Cailteux gave his address. A few highlights from the board meetings included: • A meeting was held in April 2017, with representatives from the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey and Milking Shorthorn associations to explore the possibility of creating a joint venture between the four breeds. Ideally, this venture would provide administrative and other services at a lower cost than what each breed is currently expending. • The board decided to move forward with a project to include Milking Shorthorn percentages on pedigrees. While some details still need to be worked out, this program is expected to be “live” in 2018. • Issues regarding DNA and the DNA testing program were addressed. While this process is very time consuming, it is necessary to protect the integrity of the herd book. • The board approved slight increases to the cost of membership and Journal subscription. The rate increases will take effect January 2018. • The Journal will now be on the available online once the physical copies have been mailed. • There was clarification to the All-American entry rules, which now state that all photos must be taken by a professional photographer. • As of June 15, 2017, Junia Isiminger was no longer the Executive Secretary of the AMSS. A search will begin immediately to find a replacement. President Cailteux read a message from Junia Isiminger, thanking members for their time, friendship and hospitality. Citizen of the Year Award The 2016 Citizen Of The Year award belongs to John and Marjorie Kuszlyk of Batavia, New York. Married in 1971, they have raised five children in the farming atmosphere. The family has achieved outstanding cattle genetics with great type and milk. They have developed 14 bulls and counting. One well known bull is Kuszmar Alfair Othello who was premier sire at World Dairy Expo for a decade. The family has brought home many awards such as Production Cow of the Year, along with always putting top sellers in state and national sales that continue to develop into outstanding individuals for their new owners. The couple is very dedicated to the Milking Shorthorn breed. They have both served on boards and committees while running the family farm and a milk hauling business. The list of awards and accomplishments could go on forever, but that is not their focus. Not only do they care passionately about their red, white and roan but they have a true love of their family. It is a pleasure talking with them on blood lines that they have raised, developed and made into fantastic families that have type and milk. They have shown so much dedication towards this breed it is heartwarming.

Young Breeder Award

Jason and Jessica Kennedy, R-Generation Farm of Cochranton, Pennsylvania are the 2016 winner of the Harry Clampitt Young Breeder Award. The parents of four have been long-time dairy enthusiasts. Both started working on the farm at a young age, Jessica on a Milking Shorthorn farm while Jason a Brown Swiss farm, learning dedication and a great work ethic. Since the beginning of their marriage, they have raised multiple breeds of dairy cattle but the love of the Milking Shorthorns is at the fore front of their farm. They are not only passionate about the cows, but also about promotion of the breed. The couple's generosity has not gone unnoticed. At the National Convention sale in past years they donated a calf to be raffled. This calf was won by a family from the county so they raised the animal for them for several years. The calf is now a VG88 cow who has had offspring who are now EX-92 and VG-86. The family also host Milking Shorthorn meetings and 4-H judging practices. In past years the couple has won the Nasco Type and Production award twice at World Dairy Expo as well as twice at the All American Dairy Show. Along with this has come numerous production awards and Excellent cows. As of 2016 the couple has 27 Milking Shorthorns on test with an ME average of 21,762M, 734F and 656P. The family recently bought a farm where they now house Milking Shorthorns, Holsteins and Brown Swiss.

Dual Purpose Breeder Award Alvin (deceased) and Carol Roy of Carolton, Oregon are the 2017 recipients of the Dual Purpose Breeder of the Year Award. In 1952 they obtained their first Milking Shorthorn heifer and grew their herd for 35 years while still working off the farm. The family showed at various shows on the county, state and national level throughout the years. The couple developed great genetics and a bull known as Emeraldale Lincoln whose semen is sold across the United States. Alvin and Carol never ceased to share their passion for the breed. They inspire others to start raising Milking Shorthorn cattle by sharing stories over some of Carol’s famous pie. Today Carol and her grandson Mitch operate the farm, continuing the legacy of producing great Milking Shorthorn cattle.

Milking Shorthorn Journal Fall 2017

here are a few beautiful Milking Shorthorns that have found a home in the Tulare, California, valley amongst almost 10,000 Jerseys and Holsteins at Rancho Teresita Dairy. Michelle and Danny Upchurch and their two children, Tristen and Willow, have housed their animals and worked at the Ranch owned by the Kasbergens since 2013. Danny is the herd manager for the ranch, known on the tanbark trail as Kash-In Jerseys and Holsteins. Along with overseeing herd health for the 5,000 milking head dairy, he also manages the IVF satellite facility, which flushes regularly for the ranch and surrounding dairymen every other Wednesday with implanting on the following Thursdays. Both he and Michelle, who works part time to help offset the flush costs of their own animals, take care of all the showstock; washing, clipping and breaking both their own and the Kash-In animals for the show ring. Their two children spend lots of time at the farm helping out with chores. Along with raising Tristen and Willow, Michelle finds time to be a group exercise instructor and Advocare health and wellness coach! Michelle grew up in Wisconsin, along with her sisters Carrie Ritschard, Tina Mansfield and Lisa Deitelhoff on a grade herd until she purchased her first registered Milking Shorthorn in 1989. She and Danny met in 2010 in Louisville and married in 2011. The children followed shortly in 2012 and 2013. It was their combined backgrounds and Danny’s previous associations with Case and Cornell Kasbergen that brought them to the West Coast. The Kasbergens were developing a show string that needed the experience Danny offered and the move was made. Included in the move was Michelle’s Milking Shorthorns, one of which was Lola, the All-American Senior Three-Year-Old and Five-Year-Old. She is a 3E-92 Mi-San Acres Ideal daughter out of a former 1998 All-American

Long Haul

nominee. Lola has a best record of 9-07 365D 26,300M 1,026F and 764P. She is still alive at 17 years of age and on a permanent flush schedule. Nine Patriot embryos were recently implanted for December calves. She has had eight daughters with All-American or Reserve All-American honors, one of which was Grand at Madison, a Junior Champion and two Reserve Junior Champions at Madison. Lola’s Zeus daughter, Trilow Zeus Lala ET and her sister were the junior champion combination at the World Dairy Expo in 2016. Lala freshened in July and is showing promise as a Senior Two-Year-Old prospect for this year’s Expo, and is co-owned with Susan Lee. Another show prospect for this year is a fall calf purchased with Susan Lee that came from Nova Scotia sired by Blaine. The dam is out of an Australian bull that is not available in the U.S. called Pringley and is the #13 LPI cow in Canada. One that won’t make this year’s trip is an Excellent Four-Year-Old that was All-American Jr. 2 and HM AA Jr. 3 that is a granddaughter of Dan Sal Megadeth Zena, the 2E-94 multiple All-American purchased by Susan and Michelle a few years back. The Megadeth daughter was Intermediate Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2008, All-American as a Junior Three-Year-Old and Five-Year-Old and Reserve All-American as an Aged Cow. Zena has made a tremendous impact through Michelle’s breeding, and most recently Michelle’s sister had great success with Heavenly Zippy, a Patriot granddaughter of Zena. Along with getting the show strings ready for the fall shows is the challenge of getting them East for the big dances. Prior to the shows, the animals are on their show diets, which includes a probiotic, Lira Gold, and prepped for the travel. Danny plans 48 hours on the road with the show girls stopping three times for chores along the way. As much hay as possible is taken along. Bedding and grain are purchased once they arrive. He has a layover in Cheyenne to allow the animals time off of the trailer, milking and chores and again one more time in Iowa before arriving in Madison on Saturday with the

string. Returning to California is the same to alleviate as much stress as possible. When they head to Louisville they take a southern route through Arizona and New Mexico. One end of one of the barns has been converted into large box stalls and a pack area with a small pasture field for the show cows, both for the Kasbergens and Upchurch's animals. A small flat barn for milking and wash area will also be added soon allowing for more individualized care of the show animals from the general population. It’s no easy feat to have a winner at Expo, let alone multiple ones, but Michelle has definitely invested in a transmitting family that is providing her multiple runs in the winner’s circle and the opportunity to continue to develop those winners at the facilities on Rancho Teresita. Michelle and Danny have found their niche at Ranchero Teresita with the Kasbergens and the opportunity to develop their own award-winning herd of Milking Shorthorns.

Pictured at top L-R: Michelle with Layla, Tristen following learning the ropes of clipping and the Junior Champion photo from 2016 World Dairy Expo with her sister Carrie. Below are scenes from the ranch including Michelle feeding show heifers.

Aaron Hugo Kuske died on June 20, 2017. Aaron was born on August 16, 1926 to Hugo and Laura (Lutz) Kuske in the farm house that he’s lived his entire life in. Aaron lived a very full 90 years as a farmer, sports enthusiast and man for his family. Aaron started farming at Riverdale Farm. He used horse teams, worked on a threshing crew, raised turkeys, chickens and pigs. His animal of choice became the dairy style Milking Shorthorn. Aaron made his mark in the Milking Shorthorn business as a breeder/owner, showman and active member of the State and National Milking Shorthorn Associations. Highlights included Citizen of the Year for the National Milking Shorthorn Association, many owner and breeder awards and blue ribbons at dairy shows throughout the nation. In 2007 he celebrated 50 years of showing at the Minnesota State Fair. He hosted dairy cattle judging teams from Polk County 4-H, UWRiver Falls, the University of North Dakota and Minnesota, earning the prestigious Gopher Dairy Club Award. Aaron was an Osceola Chieftain and Wisconsin sports fan all of his life. He played baseball, basketball, and football earning his diploma in 1945. He played for the early Osceola Braves and bowled at Osceola Lanes. He often had the radio on one game and the TV on another. He coached 4-H softball, and enjoyed watching OHS sporting events especially when his granddaughters played. Aaron passed on his love for showing cattle and watching sports onto three generations. Aaron is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Luella Viebrock. During the past 15 years, Aaron’s life has been blessed by and shared with his special friend, Myrtle Lehman. The 2017 American Milking Shorthorn Junior Society summer meeting was held in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, at 8:40 AM on June 16, 2017. Thirty-seven members, six officers, two advisors and four adults were present. President Jessica Crawley called the meeting to order. The officers introduced themselves along with their hometown and favorite flavor of ice cream, followed by all attending members. After introduction, the secretary read the secretary’s report. Ginna Climer, Ohio, moved to approve the minutes. Brett Groebner, Wisconsin, seconded. The motion passed. Nicholas Achen presented the treasurers report and handed out financial report. Old business was attended to. The judges for NAILE 2017 are as listed, 1st Michael Creek, 2nd Philip Topp and 3rd Jenna Lenhart. It was voted to have first place prizes at the national shows. New business was then discussed. Discussion started with whether we should have a junior ambassador instead of a queen. Alex Weiss, Ohio, moved that we table this motion until the next summer meeting so we can get feedback of what other juniors would like. Danielle Gregory, Illinois, seconded. Motion passed. Jaydyn Isiminger, Pennsylvania, talked about having a cash prize of $25 for the total performance winner instead of a banner. Jaydyn also talked about having just first place prizes at all national shows. Discussion followed that there were already first place awards at many of the shows and that maybe it would be nicer to have every show get the same amount of money to spend how they would like. Queen's Corner

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer months. I know many of you are showing in your county and state shows. I hope that you are preparing for the national shows with your red, white and roan beauties. With summer also comes baling hay or either watching or participating in summer sporting events. Whatever your passion, I hope that you are taking full advantage of what is being offered to you. Hello, my name is Jaydyn Isiminger. I am 17 years old and I will be starting my senior year at Union City High School in Union City, Pennsylvania this fall. Last year I served as the National Junior Reporter and was blessed with writing about our fellow young breeders. I am honored to have two roles this year, one in being elected at national convention as the Junior Treasurer and secondly being crowned as the 2017-2018 National Milking Shorthorn Queen on June 16th. My passion for the Milking Shorthorn breed began in 2010 when I had a beautiful Morning After heifer born, Wind Swept MornAfter Mickey. Throughout the years, I showed her at three national shows. Over her showing career she was Nominated Jr. All-American Spring Heifer Class in 2010 and then 2013 Reserve Jr. All-American Junior Three-Year-Old.

Mickey sparked my interest in dairy cattle in and out of the show ring. I created a desire to be part of the Milking Shorthorn environment. Mickey also provided me with getting to know some outstanding Milking Shorthorn breeders. Two influential breeders come to mind when Mickey caught their eye. One was Denise Whiting, who encouraged me and convinced my parents to send Mickey to the NAILE show in Louisville when she was a spring calf. Denise hauled her and my mom took me down to show her. As a young girl, that was incredible. The second was Mike Halpin because she was a Morning After daughter and he would ask me how she was doing and treated this little kid like a fellow breeder. These two breeders influenced my love for the breed and they also taught me something about life in how they live theirs. Denise is no longer with us but she fought cancer to the end and never gave up on her fight or her cows. Mike has been injured but he is fighting to recover and I know I will see him in the show ring again soon. Just as the Milking Shorthorn breeders have taught me, the cows have also taught me a large lesson - sometimes pushing is useless, you need to lead because they would rather explore and be right beside you. Therefore, I have to lead my fellow Milking Shorthorn ju-

niors as I attend state fairs and the National Shows this fall. I look forward to meeting fellow breeders throughout the United States and if you have any questions or would like me to attend any special events within your state as queen or a junior officer, please don’t hesitate to contact me at jisiminger@gmail.com. Here’s 5 fun facts about my state, Pennsylvania: 1. The official state beverage is milk. 2. America's first public zoo was founded in Philadelphia by Benjamin Franklin. 3. Indiana, Pennsylvania is known as Christmas Tree Capital of the World. 4. Chester, Pennsylvania is known as Mushroom capital of the world with producing one million mushrooms per week. 5. In 1909 the first baseball stadium was built in Pittsburgh… Go Pirates!!!

Isiminger, Pennsylvania, moved to rescind the previous motion made at NAILE meeting to have all first-place prizes at national shows. Sam Rhoades, Ohio, seconded the motion. Motion passed. The AMSJS Executive Board will discuss funding amounts for the national shows at a later time. The NAILE show was discussed whether we will have a junior show in 2018 or if it will be a step out class during the open show. Finding sponsors to pay for the show will help the juniors so that we can have a junior show. Alex Weiss, Ohio, moved to look into having a step out show. Brett Groebner, Wisconsin, seconded. Motion passed. Fund raising ideas were brought up to help pay for the shows. Having a heifer auction at the national convention sale every other year was discussed. Alex Weiss, Ohio, moved to accept the changes to the national show rules that were made on the conference calls. Colt Halpin, Illinois, seconded. Motion passed. The 18-year-old daughter of Cindy Bahr and late Brian Schmitt was once at the show halter of a different colored breed (Guernsey). That changed one day when Mena’s grandmother in late fall of 2008 came home with a deep, growthy, good-legged RED show calf; who was named North Stars H-R Dapper Music ET. Music taught Mena the highlights of life, the meaning of strength throughout hard times, and how to let a love blossom into a passion. This passion for the Milking Shorthorn breed was expressed throughout her time in 4-H in the South Columbus Willing Workers club, in which she is the Dairy Youth Leader. Responsibilities were included with this title, such as: to hold meetings on showmanship and clipping; as well as help the younger generation perform toplines onto their cattle. Mena Schmitt has also been involved in dairy judging, she has been able to qualify for state to represent her club for three years now. She was also a member of FFA at her hometown’s high school in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, where she graduated from in the Spring of 2017. The organization gave her and her heifer Maune-

sha Creek Pat Mocha Bean (a descendant of Music) the opportunity to walk down Main Street in Sun Prairie for their homecoming float! Mocha Bean is one of 13 registered Milking Shorthorns at Maunshea Creek Milking Shorthorns. They also have one Registered Holstein, and three Identified Grade Holsteins. The family has definitely left their mark on the show ring, winning five Honorable Men-

tion All-Americans, four Unanimous Junior All-Americans, two Junior All-Americans and three Reserve Junior All-Americans. The farm consists of 170 acres. The majority of the land is rented out, so currently they buy all of the feed. Mena’s job on the farm consists of daily chores, breeding decisions, management and finances. She also has the pleasure to work with Ocean-View Genetics, with Pam and Darryl Nunes. “Working with generations of excellence is truly amazing and I learn a lot to bring home to my own operation. Learning how to breed on art, not predictions,” said Mena Schmitt She also had decided to run for the Australian trip that our breed offers because she wants to be able to learn about our sister breed and Milking Shorthorns, to network with different individuals, and most importantly: how to make both our breeds better by breeding with red and white genetics or different practices. Great things have come for the Maunesha Creek Cattle and Mena with only more to come, as she begins to attend college at UW-Madison to study Dairy Science this upcoming fall.
