The Executive Report

This winter has been a different one – one day it is 20 degrees and the next it is 60 degrees! Here in Northwestern Pennsylvania this has brought about ice and snow and then mud. Never sure how to dress or how to take care of our calves – do we open the hutch vents or close them, take off calf jackets or put them on? I am looking forward to spring and hopefully more normal weather and I am sure that all of you are facing these same challenges. This issue of the Journal is always one of my favorites – it is full of the 2016 All-Americans and Junior All-Americans – these are the best of the best!! As you can see by our cover, there was an incredible amount of Unanimous All-Americans this year – that speaks volumes of our breed and our breeders. Congratulations to all our winners, reserves and honorable mentions! Also included in this Journal is the 2017 National Convention information. The convention is coming up quickly. Gettysburg has always been one of my favorite places to visit and I am excited to be able to share with all of you one of the most historical locations in our nation. Get your hotel reservations and travel arrangements made and order your tickets by the May 15th deadline. By the time you receive this Journal you should have received your delegate nomination form. The delegate form is due back to the AMSS office by April 15th. If your form is not received by April 15th, it will not be counted in the tally. A press release was sent out on March 2nd regarding a sire misidentification of a cow born in 2000 that has over 190 offspring that has been affected – (GI) INNISFAIL KO LADY 0174 bred by Stuart Rowe and currently owned by John Anderson. A copy of the press release is included in this issue. I have been steadily working on correcting the pedigrees and will soon be sending them to their owners. Please be patient as I try to complete this task as quickly as possible. Stuart and Emily Rowe have been in touch with me numerous times regarding this issue and are deeply saddened that such a serious error was made. The Rowes have made the decision that for any recent Innisfail animals that have been purchased, they will pay to have DNA performed on those animals to verify parentage. The notice regarding this is printed in this issue. Please call me if you have any questions regarding this matter. There have been many questions regarding registering ET calves in recent months. Because of this, Kathy and I have created a step-by-step guide to assist anyone who registers ET calves. It will be available on the website or you can call the office and ask for a copy to be sent to you. An important item to remember is to have your dam DNA tested when you do your embryo recovery. You will not be able to register your calves if the DNA of your dam is not on file. My final item is to watch the upcoming deadlines: April 1st is the deadline for the National Convention Sale entry; April 15th is the deadline for all award applications and May 15th is the deadline for the Junior Awards. Please take the time now to get those items completed and sent to the office. In addition, classification deadlines have been moved from the 15th of the month up to the 1st of the month. Please be sure that you are getting your applications into the office in plenty of time to help with preparing the classification schedules in a timely manner. Have a great spring – it is right around the corner. Breeding for Tomorrow, Junia Isiminger AMSS Executive Secretary

Type, Longevity & Deep Pedigrees ~The Focus of Hard Core Farm

estled in Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania, lies Hard Core Farm, the home of 80 Milking Shorthorns, Jerseys and Guernseys. Hard Core is owned and operated by Keith and Donnette Fisher. Together, they have been breeding high-caliber Milking Shorthorns for 20 years. Keith was raised in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, while Donnette hails from the state of Washington. The two met at World Dairy Expo in 1999 and were married in 2001. When Donnette made the move across the country, she brought along her Guernseys, some Jerseys as well as her “Sunshine” prefixed “F” family that has produced Fireball and Firemaid and the “D” family with offspring Dottie and Dorothy. Keith’s brother, Mark, and niece, Chriselle, are always on hand to help with the show string and operations at the farm if needed. By Jason Heeter Haplotype Cholesterol Deficiency (HCD) is a fairly recent discovery that was identified in July 2015 by the German research company, VIT. The haplotype identified in HCD is directly linked to the Holstein bull Maughlin Storm. Both Maughlin Storm’s sire and grandsire are lacking the group of DNA markers responsible for HCD meaning that this was a genetic mutation with either Storm or his dam (Whykholme Dewdrop Tacy- ET). Today there are several bulls who are descendants of Storm and carriers of HCD. Some of the more well known bulls affected are Stormatic, September Storm and Goldwyn. Cholesterol deficiency is a genetic mutation known as haplotype cholesterol deficiency (HCD). It affects Holstein calves or descendants from specific Holstein genetics. The calves born with this genetic defect lack cholesterol in their cells. Without the required Animal Name

fat-producing cholesterol in its system, it is impossible for the animal to convert energy to fat – fat needed to carry out basic physiological functions that allow the calf to thrive. Symptoms show up soon after birth, most often, the calf dies within one to six months, but in some cases, it may survive up to two years. Animals considered heterozygous for HCD appear normal and will likely lead a healthy productive life. Although if a carrier is mated to another carrier, it is expected that one in every four progeny would inherit the haplotype from both the sire and dam. This calf would be considered homozygous and is deemed fatal. Since this is a genetic recessive trait, you can successfully mate a carrier and non carrier with little to no risk. With the constant advancements of Genomic testing we will continue to learn more about this disease. VIT has developed a test that can determine the status of an animal with Reg Number Status

a known HCD member of the pedigree. As the industry discovers more carriers of HCD, the animals will be listed as HCD Homozygous (definite carrier), HCD Heterozygous (Suspect or possible carrier), or a non-carrier. Contact the AMSS office to inquire about testing a possible carrier. We will continue to update a running list of HCD carriers and have it available to the breeders on the website. This is to be used as a tool in matings within your herd. Being aware of the known carriers will strengthen the sire offering without limiting the profitable traits these bulls have to offer. Be sure to know which sires carry HCD as well as other genetic recessive traits to properly create matings that will ensure profitability and genetic advancement within the Milking Shorthorn breed.

All-Americans

By Robin Alden

Milking Shorthorn breeders put on another fantastic All-American contest in 2016. In the following pages, you will find the culmination of days of triumph, months of hard work and years of calculated mating decisions and passion for the red, white and roan. This year, there were 118 open entries and 64 junior entries. Judges for the contest were composed of the National Show judges as well as the judges of the four largest state and regional shows, who together formed quite a regionally diverse group. Open judges were: Kevin Hartmann of Illinois; Brian Schnebly of Maryland; Greg Clark of New Hampshire; Jason Lloyd of New York, Chris Lahmers, Chris Lang and Eric and Phil Topp of Ohio and Bob Hagenow of Wisconsin. Junior judges included: Adam Van Exel of California; John Collins of Connecticut; Ted Dement, Mike Halpin, Kevin Hartmann and Julie Hemp of Illinois; Jenna Smith Lenhart of New York and Chris Lang, Sherry Smith and Eric Topp of Ohio.

A total of 13 states had animals represented among the open class winners. Although nine states had multiple winners, none dominated quite like the state of Wisconsin, with 15 – including five All-Americans, four Reserves and six Honorable Mentions. In fact, Wisconsin pulled off the only two class “sweeps,” claiming the top three Spring and Winter Calves in the nation! Next-closest in All-Americans as well as total honorees was New York, with three All-Americans, two Reserves and three Honorable Mentions (for eight total). The states of Minnesota and Massachusetts were also strong contenders with four honorees each. Twelve states were represented in the junior winners, and all but one were home to multiple honorees. Wisconsin again came through strong with 15 total winners, including an incredible eight Junior All-Americans, four Reserves, and three Honorable Mentions. The runner up was the state of Pennsylvania with five total honorees; then Minnesota and New Hampshire with four each.

800 Pleasant Street, Beloit, WI 53511 Phone: (608) 365-3332 Fax: (608) 365-6644 www.milkingshorthorn.com email: JuniaAMSS@gmail.com

OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION From: Junia Isiminger, Executive Secretary Date:

March 2, 2017

The American Milking Shorthorn Society has been advised that INNISFAIL KO LADY 0174, Registration Number 449165, has genomes present from the Holstein bull, BURKET-FALLS LO-NOX-RED-ET, indicating that he is her sire. Data has been provided to AMSS from two different laboratories to confirm this parentage. Maxxam, Inc., AMSS’s official lab for DNA testing confirmed BURKET-FALLS LO-NOX-RED-ET through microsatellites as INNSFAIL KO LADY 0174’s sire. Genetic Visions-ST, LLC recently completed a genomic test for parentage and came to the same conclusion as Maxxam, Inc. confirming BURKET-FALLS LO-NOX-RED-ET as the correct sire. INNISFAIL KO LADY 0174’s DNA was submitted for testing to comply with the AMSS DNA Policy for Embryo Transfers “All cows used as embryo donors must be genotyped or DNA typed before the offspring can be registered.” When the DNA Genetic Marker Report was completed, KUSZMAR ALFAIRS OTHELLO was excluded as the sire for INNISFAIL KO LADY 0174. Based on the current known facts, the AMSS Board has directed that the pedigree of INNISFAIL KO LADY 0174, DOB: 12/13/2000, Registration Number 449165, be corrected to reflect the change in her sire from KUSZMAR ALFAIRS OTHELLO to BURKET-FALLS LO-NOX-RED-ET. She will therefore be registered as a GI, since her dam was an EXP. As a consequence of this action, all registered Milking Shorthorns with “Lady 0174” present in their pedigrees will be updated accordingly to reflect the change in Lady 0174’s parentage. All show winnings and production honors earned in the past will stand as they are in the AMSS’s pedigree database for every animal affected by this change. Going forward, animals that have been affected by herdbook status change will only be able to be shown if their corrected herdbook status is an EXP or Full Herdbook. Approximately 190 animals (male and female) recorded by the American Milking Shorthorn Society to date have “Lady 0174” present in their pedigrees. Particular offspring of Lady 0174 affected include (now with new herdbook status): GI2 LAKE EFFECT MD LAUREN 7215; LAKE EFFECT IPOD GENESIS 9108 EXP; and GE JMR REMIS LUGAR. The Society is in the process of updating the registry status of all offspring and is proceeding to issue replacement registration certificates to their owners. The cost of the replacement certificates will be covered by the breeder of Lady 0174.

TO OUR VALUED CUSTOMERS! We deeply regret the recent registration errors made under our watch and the changes now necessary on the papers of your Milking Shorthorns. Queen's Corner The sun is shining, the snow is melting, the birds are chirping and the cows are shedding here in Northern Illinois, all signs of the upcoming spring season. Usually around this time of year, I absolutely cannot wait to say "goodbye" to Jack Frost himself, however, this past year is a tad bit different compared to any other year. With Spring on its way, shortly Summer will be knocking on our door too. Trust me, I look forward to the warm weather, to wearing shorts and t-shirts, to be running around barefoot down a stream, and to my junior year coming to an end more than anyone else. I look forward to spending my summer days with children and show cattle again. This past December I was blessed with the gift of a stylish, red heifer, Mike's-Dar Zinc Starstruck. As you may have guessed, she is a descendant of the cow who created my love of the Milking Shorthorn breed, Mike's-Dar Titan Stardom. Her sire, “Zinc,” was sold at the Wisconsin Dairyland Milking Shorthorn Sale last year. He is also a son out of Innisfail Red Robin and Mapleton Valley AC Zeta. I cannot wait to spend my days at the fair with my family and friends, and seeing how “Starstruck” performs in the show rings. With the show season appearing soon, that also means my term as queen is coming to an end. I am upset that I will no longer will be traveling across states in a short few months to represent such a spectacular breed. However I look forward to passing on the title to another girl to experience such an indescribable journey. I highly suggest all girls (between the ages of 16-21) to apply for the 2017-2018 National Milking Shorthorn Queen. All you have to do to apply is write a paper answering the criteria that can be found on the breed’s website. It is due May 15th and then attend the National Convention held on June 13th-17th, sit in front of a panel of four to five Milking Shorthorn members and answer the questions that may be asked to the best of your abilities. I can promise you that you will not regret taking a step out of your comfort zone to apply. If anyone has any question about my year as queen, the places I have traveled, or any advice on applying please feel free to contact me. Danielle Gregory ~diamondjay28@gmail.com

Jr. Officer Report

Life is about trusting your feelings, taking chances, finding happiness, learning from the past and realizing everything changes. My life with a family of 10 siblings and a mom and dad who aren’t afraid of change has taken me to different states. I was born in Ames, Iowa (1999) while my dad was studying veterinary medicine. We moved to Sauk Centre, Minnesota, February of 2000, where the family had a 68-cow tie-stall barn and began with grade Holsteins. We upgraded the Holsteins with the Holstein START-UP Program, identified and upgraded a herd of 20 purchased Brown Swiss and obtained three registered Milking Shorthorns from my uncle Jeff that were his and my mother’s 4-H projects. Then it was on to Ambia, Indiana, in December of 2010. A 3000-cow, 80-stall rotary parlor was the new home for my project animals. Big change! It wasn’t exactly what I had in mind as I wanted day-to-day contact with my cattle. Long story short-some animals adapted well and others not so well. Seems we lost more Swiss than anything else. My sister, Emily and her husband Keith, are with that dairy. This dairy was now up and running and so Dad looked to another adventure--South Dakota. We purchased and filled a 2500-cow dairy in Warner during the summer of 2013. My brother Jacob remains there overseeing that operation.

Now, I reside in Lakin, Kansas, after moving here the summer of 2016. Here we operate a heifer raising feedlot and 3000-cow dairy. My parents took a lot of chances and used their past learning on other farms to make each move a success. However, moving and changing schools is no fun or no easy task. Everyone asks so many questions, you must find new friends and trust your feelings when dealing with people that are new to you. School activities weren’t the same either. I was really involved in FFA and would no longer be able to participate at our school in Kansas. To top it off, this was going to be my senior year. I didn’t like many of the classes offered at Lakin and ended up taking some online classes and doing an internship at the local vet clinic. Now, many of you junior Milking Shorthorn members who are my age are facing the end of the high school days and looking into attending college, a tech school, or maybe taking a job. This time is a time of change for us. We will need to take some chances, trust our feelings, and most of all take the lessons we learned from our family and our faith community to help us create our own happiness in our lives. With this being said, Juniors don’t forget to take advantage of your Milking Shorthorn
