The Executive Report

Happy Winter! Recently in Northwest Pennsylvania, as well as many parts of the United States, our weather has been anything but enjoyable. Between cold temperatures, snow and wind – things have been difficult on our farm as well as many others. I hope that each of you have survived the storms and keep things moving on your farms. Congratulations to all the All-American Nominations and Junior All-American Nominations. It is an honor and privilege to be recognized for all your hard work in 2016 and before. It is also an accomplishment for the Milking Shorthorn breed when you look over the nominations. These are animals that should turn any dairy breeder’s head and encourage them to purchase a Milking Shorthorn of their own. Meanwhile in the AMSS office, we have been busy keeping things moving along. In midDecember, membership packets were sent out to all 2016 members. Memberships, Express and Milk Recording applications are due by January 31st. Kathy has also been very busy completing registrations. She has been a wonderful asset to our organization and now that she has passed her one-year anniversary, she has found some areas that we need to work on – breeders and the office. One area that needs attention is the registration of ET animals. Kathy is spending a lot of time calling and emailing breeders to find paperwork for the ET animals. It is very important that ET flushes are recorded before an animal out of the flush is registered. Flush paperwork includes the recovery sheet and the implantation sheet. The implantation sheet should include the straw number of the embryo. In addition, the dam of the flush must be DNA tested. You can send in the flush paperwork with the registration application and complete everything at one time. However, you must have the dam’s DNA test complete before the registration will be completed. In addition, if you register a calf online, you must have the Embryo ID number (you receive this after you register a flush) to complete the registration. I encourage you to keep copies of the recovery sheet and submit that each time with a registration application along with the implantation sheet for that animal. Doing this keeps a complete record together and helps Kathy facilitate your registration faster. Please contact Kathy or myself for questions regarding registration of ET animals. In December, the AMSS Board met and had two full days of Board Meetings discussing AMSS and its business. During the meeting, the AMSS Board unanimously issued a declaration: “The AMSS Board supports meeting with Brown Swiss, Guernsey and Ayrshire to explore the feasibility of creating a multibreed venture to better serve all involved breeds' memberships.” Steps have been taken to set up a meeting with the four breed groups within the first quarter of 2017. The Board has already approved the joint classification venture with the other three groups. The Brown Swiss Association will be employing this new employee and managing the program. Kathi Brown-Meier has been hired for this position and will begin working for the four groups February 1st. This position will be responsible for organizing the entire classification program for all four groups including sending out sign up notices, doing the schedule and sending the schedule of classifications out to Cont. on pg. 36

President's Corner By Scott Cailteux Happy New Year! After taking time off to relax and celebrate the holidays with family and friends, it is time to get back to work. I am hopeful that 2017 will be a successful and prosperous year for the American Milking Shorthorn Society and its members. The Board of Directors held its winter board meeting in Beloit, Wisconsin on December 2nd and 3rd. As is always the case, it took us two long days to get through the agenda. The board is committed to moving the Milking Shorthorn forward. We continue to be focused on improving the quality of the services provided by the National Office, protecting the integrity of our registration process, improving the genetics of the breed and increasing demand for Milking Shorthorns. The Board has decided to explore the feasibility of creating some type of venture that would provide administrative services for two or more breeds at a lower cost than what is currently being spent by each breed on a stand-alone basis. In this connection, we plan to meet with representatives of the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss and Guernsey associations later this year to discuss the concept in further detail. Best wishes, Scott

Dominant Red

The AMSS Board of Directors enacted the following policy at the December 2014 Board Meeting in regards to the Dominant Red gene found in Holstein genetics: Dominate Red Gene Policy: In order to maintain the true color characteristics of the breed, animals who are descendants of parents carrying the Dominant Red gene shall not be allowed to be registered in the herdbook or genetic expansion programs of the AMSS. Descendants of parents carrying the Dominant Red gene shall only be allowed to be registered in the herdbook or genetic expansion programs if proven to be a non-carrier of the Dominant Red gene through an approved DNA test which will be paid for by the breeder. The Dominant Red gene (also sometimes referred to as the Variant Red gene) is not new to North American dairy cattle genetics, but recent research and an increased presence of the gene in the Holstein population has sparked the AMSS Board to take this action preventing the inclusion of this gene in the Milking Shorthorn breed. A Canadian Holstein, Surinam Sheik Rosabel-Red, born on October 21, 1980 is the first documented animal to express this gene. However, it was not until research published in 2013 that identified the exact causal mutation responsible for the Dominant Red gene in Holsteins and confirmed its mode of transmission. Dominant Red is completely independent of the better-known Recessive Red gene and is located at a different point on the genome. The Dominant Red gene follows an inheritance pattern typical of other dominant traits, such as polled. It is important to note that the Dominant Red form of this gene also will dominate over the traditional red/black gene, so an animal who is expected to be black and white due to the traditional red/black part of the genome will be red and white if it has at least one copy of the Dominant Red gene. See Figure 1.

Since the Dominant Red gene essentially masks the expression of the traditional red/black gene, it could present potential negative implications in the Milking Shorthorn breed. Coat color is an integral part of determining herd book status as well as show ring and award eligibility. Essentially, a red animal that carriers the Dominant Red gene can carry any combination of red or black at the traditional coat color point of the genome. Therefore, a Dominant Red carrier has the potential to produce black offspring even when mated to another red animal. The Dominant Red gene could persist for many generations and as soon as it is not transmitted produce black offspring. Carriers of the Dominant Red gene are identified on the Holstein Association USA website. Tested animals are identified with the following codes: DR0=Not a carrier of the Dominant Red allele, DR1=Carrier of one copy of the Dominant Red allele, DR2=Homozygous or carriers two copies of the Dominant Red allele. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DECEMBER 2016 GENETIC EVALUATIONS by Casey Weiss

Echo Farm T-Bruno Plutonium has been reducing the lead of Ecuafarm BJ Don Juan for several cycles and he finally tied him in the December evaluation. Plutonium added 23 pounds of milk which was enough to tie Don Juan. Profitable production is stranger to this family as Plutonium is a full brother the number four PPR bull, Echo Farm T-Bruno Titanium. Plutonium offers 396 more pounds of milk and 11 more pounds of fat over his brother. Plutonium also has slightly better type figures over his brother although neither have a large amount of classified daughters. One area of concern with Plutonium is his slow milking speed as compared to other bulls. GI2 Gold Mine MD Pirelli makes his official debut as the number 16-ranked bull. He is a privately collected bull that has been very popular with good results in the Midwest. Pirelli is a Kuszmar Megadeth son out of Gold Mine SF Redman Pixie 705. His initial proof consists of 10 daughters in four herds so his proof will change as it becomes more accurate but the early results show that he will be a good milk components bull. Kunde’s Golden Logic Adventure made a big jump to 18th from the number 30 spot. He added 14 daughters and five herds since August. His increase is credited to an increase of 104 lbs. of milk over August while maintaining his superior component figures. Since he is a GMC Rebel Logic son out of KulpGen Jurist Anika P EXP ET his components are no accident. His somatic cell score of 3.36 is very poor, so protect him in that area. Adventure does offer improved type at + .2 PTAT. He will add size but not strength while

8

increasing slope to the rump. He can sire a fancy udder with a well-attached fore udder, but in general the udders lack cleft, can be deep and have longer than average teat length. Echo Farm Ted McCoy ET is the highest ranked full herdbook bull. With a 64 PPR he is tied for 16th with Pirelli. McCoy’s proof did not change much from August when Echo Farm Taser Motown was the top full herdbook bull. It was more about Motown dropping down the list as he lost 53 PPR points because of his loss of 369 lbs. of milk as compared to August. These bulls are members of the “M” cow family from Echo Farm and McCoy is a full brother to Motown’s dam. As of right now, McCoy looks to be the more dependable choice. The highly anticipated Mikes-Dar Titan received his first evaluation. He débuted in the #23 spot with a very good PPR of +53. He is a milk improver with an increase of 253 pounds while maintaining slightly aboveaverage components. Titan is an Echo Farm T-Bruno Titanium son of Vinra CD TriliumET. This makes Titan an interesting outcross full herdbook option since he has no Othello, Megadeth, Red Ruben, or Rebel influence. I would not use Titan on a slow-milking cow as his milking speed scores are very slow. We were hoping that North Stars Presto EXP would rebound from his slow start as he added more daughters to his evaluation but the opposite has proven to be true. Presto added 23 daughters in 12 additional herds but he dropped from the #44 spot to #130 with a PPR of -42. His daughters are now milking 1027 lbs. of milk less than their parent average. Hopefully they will display some persistency and milk well at the end of their lactation as

Milking Shorthorn Journal Winter 2017

compared to their contemporaries. The good news on Presto is that his type is proving to be outstanding. Presto is + .3 PTAT and is the rare bull that can improve udders and feet and legs. He is the eighth-best udder improver of the breed and is siring shallow, fancy udders that will compete in the show ring. His brother Patriot did not receive an evaluation in December but should in April. Springville Logic Premium ET has been a very popular young sire and had done a great job of siring large-framed, correct heifers including the “supreme” heifer, Hard Core Premium Fire Maid EXP. Being a Logic son and coming from Tex-Star Othello Peri he is bred with type in mind. His production proof is now fairly accurate with 49 daughters in 30 herds. His daughters are not wet, -762 lbs. compared to their herdmates, and they have average components, but they do have the look of cows that will mature nicely and become productive aged cows if you are patient with them. Premium’s type pattern is similar to his sire Logic; he will increase overall size but not add much strength or width. He will also slightly add slope to the rump. As far as udders, the Premiums look really great from the side view. He is fourth in the breed for improving the fore udder attachment and also improves udder depth, rear udder height and teat placement. When you get behind them they are lacking in udder width and cleft as compared to breed average.

NATIONAL DAIRY SHRINE AWARD APPLICATIONS DUE MARCH 15 Denmark, Wis. – National Dairy Shrine is again seeking nominations for its most prestigious awards: Guest of Honor, Pioneer, Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder, Progressive Commercial Dairy Manager, and Graduate Production Award. The Guest of Honor is given to a contemporary dairy leader for outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the dairy industry. It has been awarded every year since 1949 when Dean H. Kildee was named the first Guest of Honor. Also each year, three to four living or deceased Pioneers of the dairy industry are honored by National Dairy Shrine for their service and leadership in the dairy industry. Meanwhile, the Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder is an award which recognizes active, progressive dairy producers who, through their expertise in managing a dairy breeding herd based upon sound genetics and business principles, serve as a model of success for fellow breeders throughout the country. All these award winners’ accomplishments are on permanent display in the National Dairy Hall of Fame at the National Dairy Shrine Museum in Fort Atkinson, Wis. One of National Dairy Shrine’s newer awards, the Progressive Commercial Dairy Manager recognition, is given to producers ages 21 to 50 who have introduced and applied effective management and business practices that help achieve more profitable dairy businesses, as well as contributing leadership to dairy organizations. The Graduate Dairy Production Award recognizes and assists qualified two-year and four-year agricultural college graduates efforts to pursue a career in commercial dairy farming and to gain ownership of dairy cattle with the intent of growing their dairy herd. The applicant must be employed in a herd management role on a commercial dairy when completing the award application. The winner will receive a $2,500 award from National Dairy Shrine. Nominations or applications must be submitted on official forms by March 15. If you know someone who should be nominated for these

Purebred Publishing Adds HolsteinWorld Exclusive to Family of Magazines (Columbus, Ohio) A joint agreement has been a generation ago. Purebred Publishing has Manager and that Bill Woodruff, veteran art reached between HFW Communications, Inc. and Purebred Publishing, Inc. to produce the newly relaunched HolsteinWorld Exlcusive. The editorial content, advertising sales and magazine production for the print magazine will be carried out by Purebred Publishing of Columbus, Ohio. This, according to a joint announcement by Publisher Joel Hastings of HFW Communications, Inc., owner of the title, and Managing Editor Cheri Oechsle of Purebred Publishing, is an exciting venture for both parties. “Changing times demand new solutions,” Hastings says, “and we see this outsourcing in a similar light to sending out our printing

been producing four other breed magazines for over 15 years and we think this is a very logical step to provide the best opportunities for readers and advertisers alike.” Oechsle says, “We are excited about the opportunity to work with a publication that is founded on over 110 years of service with a tradition of excellence for the Holstein breed. We look forward to working with Holstein breeders both domestically and internationally,” adds Oechsle, who grew up with registered Holsteins on her family farm in Ohio. Oechsle continues, “We’re delighted that Carol Moyer, longtime member of the HolsteinWorld staff, will continue as Breeder Ad

director, will continue his involvement with production.” As announced earlier, the first issue will appear in mid-January with a January/February issue date and a presentation of the Holstein and Jersey All-American Nominations. Hastings adds, “HFW will maintain the HolsteinWorld.com website under the direction of Randy Blodgett who continues as digital manager, with Carol helping breeders place their digital ads.” Purebred Publishing publishes the Brown Swiss Bulletin, Ayrshire Digest, Guernsey Breeders Journal and Milking Shorthorn Journal.

stein sires carrying the Dominant Red allele (DR1 or DR2) is being developed and will be posted on the AMSS website. Visit the Red & White Dairy Cattle Association website for more information on gene inheritance and some additional history on the Dominant Red gene. There are currently no known carriers of the Dominant Red gene in the Milking Shorthorn breed. With the importance of coat color and preserving the breed character of the red, white and roan – the AMSS Board of Directors and the Genetics Committee felt it was in the best interest of the breed to prevent this gene from being brought into our herdbook.

breeders. This dedicated position will be to improve the customer service of classification and assist you the breeders in helping you to prepare for the classifiers visit. There will be some growing pains with the new procedures, however I am confident that we can work through those and by this time next year, the classification program will be more efficient and running smoothly. I want to thank all of you who completed our Strategic Plan Survey in the fall. We are in the second step of the process and hope to have a draft of the AMSS Strategic Plan by our Summer Convention. Try to stay warm in the upcoming cold months. Junia Isiminger Executive Secretary

Jr. Officer Report The life of Sarah Rhoades My name is Sarah Rhoades and I am the 2016-2017 Jr. AMSS Secretary. I live in Greenville, Ohio, which is about 15 miles from the Indiana border. My farm, Buckeye Knoll Dairy Farm is a 185 acre, 230-head dairy farm. We milk around 115 cattle which consist of mainly Brown Swiss and Holstein and a few Milking Shorthorn, Jersey and Ayrshire cows. I am 17 years old and am currently attending Edison Community College while I am a junior at Ansonia High School. I am involved in FFA, 4-H, bowling and softball. From the time I could walk, I have spent my life involved with my cattle. I was always counting the days until the Darke County Fair! Showing there was the highlight of my summer. Growing up, our county fair, and sometimes the state fair, were the only fairs our family attended. It wasn’t until 2009 that we finally got to explore the real world of dairy cattle. The first “big” show that we experienced was the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. That is when I realized that there were way better cows out there than my first place heifer at the county fair. For my sister Hannah’s tenth birthday,

52

It wasn't much of a shock to anyone that when I decided to run for queen, I had absolutely had no idea what I was getting myself into or what would come along with the title. Little did I know that there is more to being a queen then wearing a bedazzled crown and sash and passing out ribbons. The first thing about being an ambassador for such a wonderful breed is that I am the younger generation’s role model. As I traveled along the states to attend national shows, I always had a group of little girls running up to me, hugging me, offering their help and telling me that they want to be like me one day. Being 16 years of age and hearing someone tell me that, it is truly heart-warming and brings tears to my eyes, as I reminisce about when I was their age saying the exact same thing to older girls. Throughout the process of being the owner of such a spectacular title, I learned that you have to step out of your comfort zone at times; whether it is speaking to new people, speaking in front of a crowd in a microphone, being in a ton of pictures at each event I attend or even taking my first flight in an airplane. In the course of being queen I also have taken on the gift of time management, such as how long I can sleep before the show starts; shortening time to get all dolled-up to step foot on the shavings and most importantly, when I can squeeze in time to work on homework and coffee breaks! The most important thing that I have learned in 2016 is that it is perfectly okay to ask for help when I need it and to rely on people around me. I could not thank the people in my life for all they have done for me this past year from asking for help to place the crown in my hair, help on homework or even needing more time, fashion advice, needing help to get rid of the nerves before the show begins or even just hearing “I am proud of you.” In conclusion, there is more to being queen than just passing out ribbons, a crown, a sash, and even getting dressed up from time to time, that is all just a bonus. To all the girls out there ages 16-21 that have even thought about running as National Queen, I highly recommend giving it a shot. You definitely will not regret the experience. If you have any questions about the process of running, or of any of my experiences as being Queen, please feel free to contact me. Danielle Gregory diamondjay28@gmail.com

my parents gave her a Milking Shorthorn calf that was also born on her birthday. She named this prized birthday present “Pila”. Pila caught many eyes as she was shown at our county fair and named Junior Champion at the Ohio State Fair. The question was soon raised, “Are you showing Pila at the AllAmerican Show or the World Dairy Expo?” That is when a remarkable lady named Cindy Climer opened our eyes to the amazing doors this Milking Shorthorn heifer, that was raised on our farm, could open for us. Cindy showed us the ropes at both Harrisburg and Madison. The All-American show treated us very well, naming Pila Junior Champion of the Junior and the Open Milking Shorthorn show. Then came the World Dairy Expo. Just like the AllAmerican show, Cindy took us to the World Dairy Expo where I got to experience seeing the world’s best cattle. Pila won the Junior Champion of the Junior and the Open Show. That was when we knew we had something very special. This was a home-bred heifer from a breed we didn’t know much about. Soon our summers and falls became known as “Show Season!” The following year, we showed Pila and a few other animals at the local, state and national shows. The second year we did it all over again with the same out-

come! Junior Champion at the All-American and World Dairy Expo Show. That year my dad flushed Pilar (Pilas mother) and I was given a calf that was Pila's full sister and I named her PlumAmazing. My very own Milking Shorthorn heifer!!! I took Plum to her very first show in 2012 at the Ohio State fair. I left with the Junior Champion of the Junior and Open Show. Wow! I had done it. My very first champion ever. Plum went on to win Junior Champion at the All-American and the World Dairy Expo for the next two years. I never knew this would ever happen to me and my family. Who would have known, this little girl from Greenville, Ohio who had no idea what the “big” shows were, had won them. I couldn’t be more thankful for having a father there by my side every step of the way teaching me everything I would need to know about showing cattle. I am thankful for my mother and my grandma for making all of the food for the shows and keeping everyone around us happy. I would also like to thank all of my Milking Shorthorn friends and my “show family” for always helping me or just being there for us out of trouble. One last thank you needs to go to Cindy Climer. Although you are no longer with us, you changed my life forever. I would not be where I am today without you.
