On the Cover Thank you to 19-year-old Megan Bunnell from Lodi, New York for her photo submission through Facebook and congratulations on having it selected for the cover of this issue. The calf pictured is an Alaska June calf and daughter of her favorite cow Rango; Summer Hill Alaska Rose. Megan is a Freshman at Morrisville State College studying Agriculture Business. In 2014 she won the New York State Ayrshire Calf Scholarship which made it possible for her to purchase her first calf. Now, her Ayrshire herd consists of two first lactation cows, and her Summer calf Rose. Megan has enjoyed showing dairy for the past two years and has had lots of success in showmanship! Thank you for the photo Megan. Executive Director’s Report US AYRSHIRE BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS The US Ayrshire Breeders’ Association Board of Directors and Committees met in Becky Payne Columbus, Ohio December 1-3. Over 40 Ayrshire enthusiasts participated in some or all of the weekend activities. In the directors’ meeting, great care was spent addressing ideas, concerns and plans for the future. The ABA is projected for a small net profit in 2017; and a positive budget for 2018 was approved. A presentation was made on a newly identified haplotype (AH2) affecting early embryonic loss which results when a carrier of the mutation is mated to another carrier. Details of the presentation are printed on page 18-19. In an effort to simplify the registration process, the rules for identification and registering ET progeny were updated. The complete rules are available at usayrshire.com under the ‘News’ section. There was in-depth discussion on indexes, including how to read and understand the US Ayrshire system as a composite, weighted ranking of specific traits to be utilized as a tool. The formula will be reviewed professionally in 2018 for potential updates

for the Breed Improvement Committee to consider. A goal was set for 2018 to genomic test more Ayrshire females to gain genetic reliability. The ABA is making genomic test awards available for anyone who would like to purchase them for that special person that has everything, as show awards, etc. Contact the ABA office for this information. The ABA published three new promotional brochures that are available upon request for breeders to use at events to promote Ayrshires and how they fit into today’s dairy industry. Additional promotion projects are underway and will be revealed this spring. The World Ayrshire Event Sale at World Dairy Expo will undergo some changes for 2018. We will be working with Jersey Marketing Service so Ayrshire consignments will be stalled with the other protein breeds in the sale tent for increased breed and sale promotion. The commission will be 15%. There is work being done behind the scenes with some other dairy breeds to gain efficiencies. The ABA is excited about this progress, although slow at times, and will report to the membership as news is available. The Board of Directors reopened discussion about the World Ayrshire Federation resolution of September 2016. The Board addressed the public

letter released in January 2017 that was intended to inform our breeders and members of the US Ayrshire Breeders’ Association herdbook policies. We also reviewed the historical information and data recently provided by Per Falk that was used as the basis of the resolution. The Board admits it was an emotional discussion and hasty decision to release the letter in January 2017. The salutation did not reflect our intended audience, and we regret any misunderstandings. The US Ayrshire Breeders’ Association fully accepts the resolution that passed during the World Ayrshire Federation meeting. However, after lengthy discussion, the Board feels it is in the ABA’s best interest to continue with the current Herdbook policies that govern our registration process, which is fully compliant with the by-laws of the World Ayrshire Federation. It is the Board’s ardent desire that all Ayrshire breeders can work together and strive to build a bigger and brighter future for our wonderful Ayrshire cow! The work of the ABA Board of Directors and committees is ongoing. As progress is made throughout the year, announcements will be made and presentations given at the upcoming National Ayrshire Convention to be held June 27-30, 2018, in Branson, MO.

She is a Bradock daughter of the multiple All-American EX-91 2E Geminaecho Remingto Shellie. Reserve Junior Champion honors went to Ridale Genetics and Paragon Acres Summer Yearling, Yellow Briar Pick Me Up from Massachusetts. The Gibbs daughter was the Junior Champion at Eastern States National Show earlier in the year for her owners. She is out of a Junior Two-Year-Old All-American nominee sired by Free Beer. After placing 89 heifers, Judge Bergeron took on the task of placing the young cows. When he finished sorting them he tapped his champions, the fancy Junior Two-Year-Old, De La Plaine Vicking Lady as the judge’s Intermediate Champion choice. “A handy winner,” said Bergeron. “She’s ultra-balanced, she’s got the style, openness and scale that puts her over the Junior Three-Year-Old.” Fresh off her Reserve Intermediate Champion win at the

I think she is a cow that puts it together pretty nicely, so wellbalanced, great mammary, great frame. She is followed by the Junior Two-Year-Old, so

much quality that will follow in her footsteps in the future and then the Jr. Three-YearOld, I just could not break these two up.” Reserve Senior Champion and the Total Performance Winner was Agawam Burdette Embry, the 93-point Burdette winning FourYear-Old. Junior Showmanship was won by Blake Greiwe of Sidney, Ohio, while Shaelyn Scoon of Lancaster, Missouri, won Senior Showmanship. Junior Champion went to the first-place Fall Calf, Sweet-Pepper Predator Shale. She was leased and shown by Kylie Jordan, Hope Valley, RI, and is owned by Craig and Bonnie Hawksley, of Rhode Island. Sired by Forever Schoon Predator-ET, out of Sweet-Pepper DBL B Slate VG-87, she was also the Junior Champion of the Central National Junior Show earlier this year. Procedures & Requirements for Embryo Transfer effective December 3, 2017 1. The donor dam must be DNA or genomic tested for parentage verification. The testing will be done at the breeder/herd owner’s expense. The requirement must be done before resulting progeny can be registered. 2. If a donor dam has not been tested for parentage verification and is not available for testing, multiple offspring must be tested to derive and/or verify parentage. This testing will be done at the breeder/herd owner’s expense. 3. The Ayrshire Breeders’ Association has the discretion to request and review copies of records and/or test ET progeny for parentage verification. The testing will be done at the breeder/herd owner’s expense. 4. Mixed semen from two (2) sires may be used under the following conditions: a. The donor dam and all potential sires must have been DNA or genotyped and have parentage verification records. b. An interpretation of combinations of sires must be made by the lab prior to use of mixed semen to determine if the progeny resulting from mixed semen can be positively qualified to only one sire. c. All resulting progeny must be tested for parentage verification before the animal will be registered. 5. The suffix -ET will be added to the name of all embryo transfer animals registered.

Identification Rules effective December 3, 2017 Identification – Breeders may use tattoos or USDA approved American ID tags (i.e. 840 tags) as forms of identification for registration. Animals must have a minimum of two (2) identifications consisting of one of the following scenarios: 1. Two (2) USDA approved American ID tags, one in each ear with the same corresponding numbers 2. One (1) USDA approved American ID tag and a tattoo in at least one ear 3. A tattoo in each ear If tattoos are used, they can be an official Ayrshire tattoos using the recommended ABA format, or a breeder selected tattoo sequence. Tattoos must include at least one letter and one number. No two animals on the same farm may have the same tattoo.* A designated area for a photograph will be printed on the registration certificate for breeders who would like to continue this practice for their own management purposes. It is the owner’s responsibility to maintain eartags. If an animal loses a USDA approved American ID tag or tags, the breeder should contact the ABA and send the registration certificate for correction with replacement tag number(s) or tattoo(s). Duplicate RFID tags cannot be obtained; but replacement ID tags can be ordered from the original supplier. A different RFID tag may be used; but if the animal was registered with the American ID tag number, the registration number will not be changed. Most shows require a USDA approved 840 tag. *It is the owner’s responsibility to maintain a valid and legible tattoo in the ear of each animal owned. When a tattoo becomes faded, the owner must re-tattoo the animal in the same ear with the same tattoo.

A look at the newly identified haplotype in the Ayrshire breed

With the advancement in Ayrshire genomics, we knew the day would come when anomalies would surface. That day has come, and now we must move forward learning what they mean to Ayrshire breeding programs. Two haplotypes affecting fertility have been identified: Ayrshire Haplotype 1 (AH1) and Ayrshire Haplotype 2 (AH2). The most recent, AH2, was officially released with genetic evaluations in December 2017 by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB). A haplotype is a set of DNA variations, or polymorphisms, that tend to be inherited together. A haplotype can refer to a combination of alleles or to a set of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) found on the same chromosome. Now that we have the scientific definition out of the way, maybe a layman’s description will make more sense. Adam Oswalt, Select Sires, Inc. Dairy Sire Product Specialist, gave a presentation on haplotypes at the December board and committee meetings. Oswalt explained to the group, “Haplotypes are a block of DNA that moves from one generation to another. Sometimes a mutation causes a negative affect which is the documented haplotype.” In the case of AH2, if a carrier is mated to a carrier, the result is embryonic loss. It is important to note that haplotypes are only documented in those animals that are genomic tested and not in the general population of the Ayrshire breed. Since genomic evaluations for Ayrshires were officially implanted in the United States in 2013, it stands to reason that this information may become clearer as more animals are tested. The identified haplotypes in the Ayrshire breed can be managed. Ayrshire Breed Improvement Committee Chair Mary Creek shared her thoughts saying, “Haplotypes have been there for generations. We just did not know about them until science gave us the tools to unlock genetic secrets, both good and bad. Queen’s Corner Hello everyone! I hope your holidays were great! I wish I could have made it to Louisville. I am sure all your cows looked amazing! I know some people will have classified or be signing up to classify and I hope that goes well for everyone. I am planning to sign up my two cows that are due in the spring that should give me heifers to show next summer since they are both bred to sexed semen. Many of you are probably looking at your calves for show prospects and waiting for your spring calves to be born. A reminder to youth, because I know how easy it to forget, that the deadline for the Ayrshire notebook and the scholarship applications is March 1. I know with the end of winter coming everyone will be busy, but I wish everyone the best of luck in the new year!
