Executive Director’s Report As we have ended another winter Olympics era, a frequent sentiment expressed by many Becky Payne athletes was that it took the help and support of others to reach their goals to participate in the Olympics. This is a common attitude held by successful people you can’t reach the top without the helping hands of many carrying you towards that goal. When you keep individual and group goals in sight, you realize there are many victories to be experienced along the way. Our dairy industry is much the same. Sweat, tears and many sleepless nights are common for many of us. Lately it seems that the burdens are overshadowing the small successes. If you’ve been looking forward to spring calving season and seeing the results for a new crop of young sire daughters, make sure to stop and take the time to appreciate the beauty of your efforts. After you’ve put in a long, hard day, take that extra minute to look back through the barn door at the cows settling in contentedly for the night. The small, quiet moments help make the challenges a little more bearable. Sharing burdens with others along the way can help them seem more tolerable. In the Ayrshire world, you can join other Ayrshire breeders locally at state and regional events. When it seems like you barely have a second in your day to do one more thing, try to do it anyways. Make time to have fellowship with others
who share common interests. It’s the time of year for state meetings, sales and spring shows; and you’ll never understand the benefits of participating if you don’t take that first step. The ABA is also sharing our goals and burdens with others who share common interests, and that is our fellow dairy breed associations. We’re networking more together, we’re sharing problems and looking for common solutions, and we’re seeking new technologies for greater efficiencies. Our multi-breed partnerships are continually developing in the classification program. We will participate in a workshop this spring in Wisconsin. Type evaluation committee members for each breed, staff and classifiers will gather together and evaluate cows from each breed, at various ages and stages of lactation. The goals are to evaluate consistency from classifier to classifier, identify possible traits we want to study for future consideration, answer questions from the classifiers on breed specific topics, and share common goals between associations. If you have questions or concerns that would be helpful to express prior to the workshop, please contact me, Chairman Lynn Lee or an ABA Director. In the next two issues of the Ayrshire Digest, we will be sharing the ground work for positive change in the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. We’ll be educating how to utilize some online tools to aid in mating for selective traits you’d like to improve upon in your herds. Ayrshire genomics have been evolving since our
The final deadline for the 2018 REWARDS program is approaching! Applications must be submitted by March 31, 2018. REWARDS is the solution for breeders looking for convenience and cost-savings to enhance the value of their Registered Ayrshires.

breed’s entrance into this science several years ago, and we’ll be announcing some great enhancements in this area as well. Your directors and staff have been working diligently for months looking for solutions to help bridge the gap for our traditional members and those more technologically savvy, and we have an exciting plan unfolding as you are reading this very Digest. We all know times are tight right now, and we must look for different ways to forge ahead. If you can’t afford to advertise much, use social media. Set aside any negativity associated with social media, and cherish the good moments with your Ayrshire friends and family. Share classification results, consignments for sales, fresh cows that make you want to go to work every morning, genetics you find exciting and so much more. Each positive Ayrshire experience that is shared is yet one more sign of success for the Ayrshire team. Great teamwork happens when we realize the potential each person plays in the entire team’s success. I read somewhere recently that we should always focus on the purpose at hand, as our purpose is always bigger than our problems. With all the problems in our world and the challenges our industry is facing today, perhaps continuing to focus in some way on our combined purpose of Ayrshire breed prosperity and Ayrshire fraternity will add a bright spot to every day.

Locust-Spring Farm
Transitioning to the Next Generation Eric Bogardus and his fiance’ Taylor Clifford are working hard to continue the Locust-Spring Farm that Eric’s parents began in Sloansville, New York. We asked them to help us understand how a young couple can take the plunge of taking over the family farm, as well as continuing to work and develop a herd of good cows. Taylor is also a vocational agriculture instructor in the local school system. Their rolling herd average is 19,100M. Taylor and Eric have eight Excellent and 15 Very Good Ayrshires currently in the herd that are owned by them. Together they were awarded a regional winner in 2017 for the American Dairy Association Northeast’s Dairying for Tomorrow Award in the Animal Care Category. Taylor was kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions for us. Please tell us about the family farm history and how you are transitioning into management and ownership roles? Eric’s parents purchased the family farm and began milking in Schoharie in 1994. In the fall of 1995 the first Ayrshire calves were purchased for Eric and his sister, and that helped form the Ayrshire
herd. After graduating from Cornell in 2010, he came back to the home farm. We started dating in 2011 while I was attending SUNY Cobleskill. After a few years we realized that we were going to outgrow his parents 35 cow tie stall facility that needed modernization and updates, as well as lacked an adequate water supply for the number of cows we had. His parents wanted to semi-retire, so when a facility 10 miles from their farm came up for sale, it set the wheels in motion. His dad now crop farms full time and we purchase most of our feed from him, keeping it still a family operation. The farm we purchased has a 120 cow tie stall barn with room for 88 on the pipeline. We spent about 3 months updating and renovating the barns: mattresses, updating the milking system, fans, waterers, grain bins, heifer pens. We finally moved cows in June of 2016 after closing in March. The transition into management and ownership wasn’t awful as we had both played roles in managing aspects of his parents farm - Eric was managing the milk cows and I focused on calves and young stock. The biggest transition was the purchase of the animals from his parents and taking over day to day expenses as farm
owners. We both have bachelors degrees in agriculture and took a multitude of business classes that helped to prepare us for that aspect. What is your breeding philosophy and why, as well as how, are you preparing or laying groundwork, for the future herd genetics? We strive for functional type: cows that excel in both the show ring and at home. Our business revolves around the day to day care and management of the cattle for sustainability and profit in the bulk tank, but improving genetics for showing, competing and selling genetics play a role in those decisions as well. We’re laying the ground work for the future of the herd by making progressive mating decisions and using IVF and ET to maximize the genetic potential of the herd. We find that our top performing cattle are often the top producing cattle in the herd, so investing in these genetics through intensive mating and flushing yields returns both in the bulk tank and show ring. We place an emphasis on breeding for 100% Ayrshire genetics, as this improves genetic merit while increasing the marketability of offspring and genetics.

Ayrshire Digest
What do you think will be some of the key survival and profit points to make a future for yourselves as Ayrshire breeders? We utilize progressive genetics to maximize both the profitability of our herd while putting ourselves in a position to be able to market and sell offspring. We have a mixed herd of Ayrshire and Holsteins and we have found that our Ayrshires are superior in their reproductive efficiency and are often making as much, if not more ECM than the Holsteins. The bottom end animals of both breeds are utilized as recipients for our flush and IVF work to continue maximizing genetic potential of both breeds. While we don’t breed solely for 100% Ayrshire, we do feel that there is a market for 100% genetics, so we’re able to cater to breeders seeking high quality, high performing 100% Ayrshires. We utilize DHIA records, classification and show records in mating and management decisions. We also offer boarding and have a variety of boarded cattle currently, helping us to further remain financially viable as we grow our cattle numbers. How, as a vo-ag instructor, do you, or can you, help mold or encourage your students to prepare for the ag industry? Dairy or otherwise? While I teach in an area that is rich in
agriculture history and farming operations, I only have a handful of kids that either live on or play a role in farming. Most of my students are 2-3 generations removed from agriculture, but that hasn’t stopped the program from flourishing in its first two years. I question my sanity after taking a position 45 minutes away from home to build an agriculture program in our first year of farm ownership, but it’s truly been an amazing experience. The biggest part of preparing students for the future of agriculture is getting them to realize that they don’t have to go into production agriculture to be involved in agriculture. It shocks kids to hear that 1 in 5 jobs in America are directly or indirectly related to the production, processing, marketing or distribution of food, fiber, fuel and natural resources. I try to expose students to as many of these job opportunities as possible. As a chapter, our FFA has focused on trying to improve agricultural literacy at a young age and implement monthly activities with 1st graders to explore agricultural concepts. My undergraduate education was in biotechnology, so my curriculum and classroom instruction includes the science behind agricultural concepts, as it’s relevant to their daily lives as well as their future. Agricultural education has long been dubbed as classes for students that are academically deficient or that need
to work with their hands, leading to an overall disconnect in consumers believing the only jobs in ag are farming and that farmers are uneducated individuals, when in reality modern farmers are often highly educated and highly resourceful individuals committed to producing high CONTINUED ON PAGE 60

College of the Ozarks Hosts the 20
Students learn dairy management skills, including checking for pregnancy. By Kathaleen Kuhn, ABA Intern The Grand National Ayrshire Sale, in conjunction with the 2018 National Ayrshire Convention, will be held at the College of The Ozarks, nestled in between the cities of Branson and Hollister, Missouri. The College of the Ozarks is a private, Christian faithbased, unique liberal arts school that sets them apart from colleges across the US by priding themselves on five main goals. The first is to provide a sound education, based in the liberal arts. Secondly, to promote a strong work ethic, encouraging the development of good character and values. Third, to cultivate an appreciation of the fine arts, an understanding of the world, and adherence to personal standards. Fourth, to encourage an understanding of American heritage, civic responsibilities, love of country, and willingness to defend it. Lastly, to foster the Christian faith through the integration of faith with learning, living, and service. An interesting feature of the historic W. Aton Jones dairy is its diversity. The dairy houses 75 Holsteins and 10 Jerseys in a hybrid management style that combines free stalls and rotational spring grazing. The dairy prides itself on being self-sustaining as they raise their own replacement heifers and grow 80% of the materials used in the TMR fed to
their cattle in the fall and winter months. Herdsman Ryan Bilyeu is very excited to be hosting the Grand National Ayrshire Sale. “This is a great opportunity for the college and for our student workers,” he said. “This gives our students a great
chance to see more breed diversity and gain a lot of real world experience by working with a national sale. We are all really looking forward to hosting the Grand National Ayrshire Sale.” The dairy employs 32 students during spring and fall semesters and 14 during the summer. The students’ responsibilities include milking, feeding, and all daily care and management of the livestock. Student workers also have the option of showing some of the cattle at the Missouri State Fair. The milk from the dairy is used in other campus businesses, such as The College Creamery, where it is turned into delicious ice cream. Bilyeu says he wants his students to have experience in as many facets of the dairy industry as possible so they’ll be prepared to go back home to run a family farm or to go join the workforce elsewhere. Student supervisors, advisors and professors (like Bilyeu) instill great work ethic into their students, earning the college the nickname, “Hard Work U”. In addition to their hard work in the classroom and on the job, C of the O also prides itself on its outreach work, such as holding educational agriculture events on their farms and hosting FFA events. A major point that sets the College of the Ozarks apart from mainstream
Students work year-round and provide the majority of the labor force on the dairy.

018 Grand National Ayrshire Sale higher education is that students can easily graduate debt free. They are able to do this by requiring that students work 15 hours a week on campus. The money earned from these jobs, plus scholarships and grants, covers the students’ entire tuition. With this work program, students who may not otherwise be able to afford college can pursue their studies and major in more than 40 subject areas, spanning from agriculture to pre-professional degrees. Because of this innovative work program and other on-campus initiatives, usnew. com listed College of the Ozarks as the 2017 #1 Most Innovative School in the US. Students can choose to work in over 100 different jobs on campus. The more unique positions include the dairy, a water-powered grain mill where students grind flours and mixes, a stained glass and candle factory, and a fruit cake and jelly bakery. All of the student-made items are for sale in various campus stores and make great

gifts! Another interesting place students have the opportunity to work at is the Keeter Center, an on-campus dining, lodging and meeting space where students act as the management team, the cleaning staff, and the chefs. The hotel portion of the Keeter Center has been listed by TripAdvisor.com as the one of the top 10 small hotels in America. In addition to the Keeter Center and the other studentrun shops and facilities, the campus also houses two free museums. The Ralph Foster Museum features some historic dairy
artifacts plus the car from “The Beverly Hillbillies”. The Gaetz Tractor Museum showcases various restored makes and models of farm equipment. All Ayrshire convention and sale guests are invited to visit and enjoy the College of the Ozarks, located just 10 minutes from downtown Branson, which offers many other attractions including Country Music Boulevard and Silver Dollar City, an 1880s-style theme park. So, as you can see there will be plenty to do while not in the sale ring! Queen’s Corner Hello everyone! I can’t believe winter is almost over! I’m sure some of you will be busy with getting ready to start planting. I also know that many of you will being getting ready for shows this spring. I don’t have many spring shows close to me, so I will be spending that extra time getting ready for the other shows. I’m super excited to start the show season! I am also super excited that as my show season will be starting, I will be finishing my senior year of high school in June. I only have one Ayrshire calf to pick from for this show season since I am still growing my Ayrshire herd. I have two cows due in March that I am expecting will give me heifer calves considering they are both bred to sexed Alaska. I am also hoping that these two cows are going to do well in the shows this year. I am sure you all are looking at your show prospects and are hoping the same thing as I am with your heifers and cows this year. I wish you all luck with starting your show season and other spring activities! ~Mackenzie Schofield, National Ayrshire Queen

Meet the 2018 Di Audrey Gay Rodgers grew up with Ayrshires. Her uncle, A. Reed Hayes, a Marine who was injured in WW2, came home and started a herd of Ayrshires in the 1940s. He was a mentor to her father, John Reed Rodgers, and the rest, as they say, Audrey Gay Rodgers “is history.” Today, Belleville, PA the Plum Bottom Director Candidate herd resides at Region 1 Hameau Farm in Belleville, Pennsylvania. The herd includes 30 milking and dry cows and 25 bred and open heifers and calves. At Hameau Farm, there is 110 acres of grass that sustains the herd in the form of dry or wrapped hay for the winter months and grazing in the spring, summer and fall. The management system for the herd includes rotational grazing; cows are put into a new paddock after evening milking each day, 8-9 months of the year. At Hameau, Ayrshire cows act as the harvesters and manure spreaders all in one! Assisting Gay on the farm is her life-long friend, Cookie Wagner; her neighbor, Noah Sharp; and her ‘consultant’, John D. Rodgers. At Hameau Farm, three new individuals, including Cookie, now own some of the Plum Bottom herd. Hands-on help on the farm increases during the summer as they throw the doors open a bit wider to host six weeks of Cow Camp. During Cow Camp, 30 girls, ages 8 through 14, spend their time learning firsthand about the herd, chores and management routines. Many campers return year after year and go on to college to study Animal Science, Food Policy and even Cheesemaking. Through the Cow Camp program, Ayrshire cattle are inspiring and empowering young girls to look into non-traditional career choices. Gay’s personal involvement with the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association dates back to the mid-90s, when she owned a few cows. Then in 1996, Plum Bottom Trident’s Paris was born. Gay states, “The best thing about my affiliation with the Association is the people I have had the opportunity to meet, work with and learn from.” In 2015, the Ayrshire Convention was held in Pennsylvania and Hameau Farm was featured on the tour. It was thrilling for them to throw the barn doors open and welcome friends, new and old, to see the Plum Bottom girls. Rodgers is a member of the Pennsylvania Ayrshire Breeders’ Association, where she served on the board for a term and has been involved in the addition of the Heifer and Calf Show following the PA Spring Sale. Gay has also served on the national ABA Promotion
Committee. Other leadership positions Gay has held include two terms on the session at East Kishacoquillas Presbyterian Church, and roles within Pennsylvania Women’s Agriculture Network (PA WAgN) for the past 15 years. Rodgers also serves on the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA). PASA and the Soil Institute are working on a project where Hameau Farm is part of the research and received a grant to monitor soil health as a result of rotationally grazing with the Plum Bottom herd. Another project with PASA is the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship (DGA) program, which is a two-year commitment and offers additional educational opportunities to both the apprentice and farmer. Jess Mathews is presently the apprentice, and she has a strong interest in value-added products and the manner consumers are engaged, which could very well change Hameau Farm in the future. Bill Woodis, of North Brookfield, Massachusetts has been involved with Ayrshires all his life. Bill along with his wife Diane, his daughter Amy, her son Gabriel Blaisdell, and granddaughter Emily Paquette breed Lone Birch Ayrshires. Bill has four children: Amy Bill Woodis and grandson North Brookfield, MA Gabriel; Sarah and Director Candidate granddaughters Region 1 Emily, Hannah and Ryann; twin sons, Mike, who with his wife Heather is farming in Dewittville, New York with their daughters Madison, Sophia, Lily and Evangaline; and Christopher and granddaughter Ella and grandson Aiden. The grandchildren are the sixth generation of Lone Birch Ayrshires. With the engagement of his daughter, Amy to Pete Rossiter of Ayr-Bay Farm from St. Peter’s Bay, Prince Edward Island in Canada, the two herds have combined to become Ayr-Bay & Lone Birch Ayrshires. The goal is to continue to build on these two herds. Bill has been a longtime member of the ABA. He is currently serving on the ABA Show Committee and Classification Committee. Damian Ullmer with his wife Kiley, daughter Mackenzie, and son Gavin, own and operate Ullmstar Ayrshires. They milk 100 cows and have 100 young stock of which about half are Ayrshires. The Ullmers have had Ayrshires for over 10 years and have won numerous Damian Ullmer production awards Seymour, WI at the state and Director Candidate national levels. Region 2 They show at all levels, and have bred and are proud to have exhibited many AllAmericans. They also farm 150 acres of corn and alfalfa. Damian was appointed to the ABA Board of Directors in June 2017 as a Region 2 Director to fill an unexpired term. He has served on the ABA Breed Improvement and Marketing committees. He enjoys working with other committee members to make the changes necessary to move the breed forward. Ullmer has also been a member of the Northeast Wisconsin Ayrshire Association and a member of the Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders Association for 12 years. In addition, he has served on the Wisconsin State Ayrshire Show Committee where he has co-managed the Wisconsin State Ayrshire Sale for five years and has helped with numerous national sales, including the World Ayrshire Event Sale. He managed a herd dispersal last fall and is currently planning another sale for a retiring breeder. Ben Walsh is director of Morgantown Farms at West Virginia University. Ben comes to the Ayrshire breed after 13 years as the owner/operator of Green Glades Dairy and Creamery, which was a Jersey dairy and cheese making business that he and his wife started after college. They started with 36 cows and Ben Walsh milked as many as 90 Morgantown, WV cows and sold cheese Director Candidate and heifers in the Region 2 Mid- Atlantic region. The Walshes won Silver and Bronze medals at the World Jersey Cheese Awards held on the Isle of Jersey. After selling the operation in July of 2014, Ben came to work at West Virginia

irector Candidates University; and in January 2016, moved to the main campus in his current position. The Animal Science Farm in Morgantown is home to the Reymann Memorial Ayrshire herd which celebrated its 100th year in 2017. Ben is closely involved in all aspects of the day-to-day management of the dairy herd. The Reymann herd was gifted to the university along with a farm by the Lawrence Reymann estate. Lawrence’s brother Paul was very active in the US Ayrshire Breeders’ Association having served as president from 1921-22. Ben takes his responsibility very seriously as caretaker of the Reymann Memorial Herd and the RMF prefix that is attached to it. In the past three years, the rolling herd average has increased by 34%. With the help of several experienced Ayrshire breeders they are making swift improvements in the number and quality of Ayrshires through their embryo program and a few donated quality cows. They have purchased numerous embryos and are also flushing some of the herd’s top cows. In the past two years, the number of Ayrshires on the farm has increased from six milking cows to 16 milking cows and 11 heifers. In the past two years, Ben has been involved in numerous Ayrshire activities including board and committee meetings and portions of the tour tied to the World Ayrshire Conference. He has worked with the ABA and the US Ayrshire Foundation on possible research collaborations. Ben has also attended Ayrshire activities in Pennsylvania. He will be involved in hosting the first Ayrshire Field Day and Pasture Walk this fall at WVU. David Hanson is originally from Goodridge, which is in the Northwestern corner of Minnesota. He spent most of his life working on his family farm, GoodVue Ayr Farms, which is comprised of his parents Mike and Linda, two younger David Hanson brothers Matthew and Nicollet, MN Steven, and David Director Candidate with his wife, Ashley Region 3 Swenson. While David was growing up, the Hansons milked around 45 registered Ayrshires in a tie-stall barn, while also farming 2,700 acres of crop land alongside his grandparents Lynn and Norma. In 2016, they expanded the dairy operation by adding two robotic milkers, a robotic feeding system and moved from a tie-stall facility to a 120-cow free stall barn. They currently have around 85 Ayrshires and 25 Holsteins milking, along with raising all of their own young stock. David has moved to Nicollet, Minnesota, at the opposite end of the state, where he works on his in-laws’ farm, Forest-Lawn Holsteins.
March/April 2018
The milking herd is made up of 230 Holsteins, 10 Brown Swiss and, as of this past summer, one Ayrshire, and Hanson hopes to keep that number growing. David has been a lifelong member of the ABA, due to both sides of his parents’ families being heavily involved in the Ayrshire breed for many years. In 1999, at age 10, he started attending Ayrshire conventions and other Ayrshire events and has been increasing his involvement upon completing high school and college. Hanson has served on both the Marketing and Show committees over the past few years. He also has represented U.S. Ayrshire in Finland in 2015 and in Australia in January 2018 for international events. David currently serves on the Minnesota Ayrshire state board and in 2014 organized the state showcase herd that featured Minnesota Ayrshires at the Minnesota State Fair. He is a former member of the Northwest Dairy Day board of directors, and he is serving on the Nicollet County ADA board. Bruce Kempkes resides in Walton, Nebraska with his wife Kristi, daughter Kourtney, and son Kaleb. His parents, Richard and Shirley, moved to their existing farm in rural Lancaster County in 1960 to start their 600-acre crop farm and established HiFashion Ayrshires. Bruce Kempkes Bruce’s dad still Walton, NE lives on the farm Director Candidate Region 3 and offers his words of wisdom, when asked. Kempkes’ involvement with Ayrshires has been lifelong; daily chores and milking have been a part of his day for his entire life. In 2009, the family decided to sell their milking herd. They kept some heifers to serve as project calves for local youth. They now focus on bred heifers that are kept on their farm until calving, and then they are sent to a 1100 commercial dairy cow farm to be milked. The family currently has 15 milking cows and 20 heifers that Kourtney and Kaleb continue to show at local youth shows and also at the Nebraska and Kansas State Fairs. For the past six years, Bruce has worked as a Production Technician with Mycogen Seeds with responsibilities including all aspects of growing the seed corn to then conditioning and bagging it for purchase. He has also been a member of the Hiring Committee at Mycogen Seeds where they evaluated new job applicants, interviewed the applicants and worked together on determining who is to be hired. When he comes home from work in the evenings, he
decompresses by going to the farm to do chores and to be with the cattle. Kempkes has been a member of the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association for 35 years. He previously served on the Board of Directors for eight years. Bruce has served on many committees, including Youth, Promotion, Breed Improvement, Financial and is currently serving on the Nominating Committee. His involvement at the state level includes serving on the Board for the Interbred Dairy Council. In other leadership roles, Bruce and Kristi previously ran the Bennet, NE Ball Club which consisted of organizing numerous softball, baseball and t-ball teams and also running their concession stand. Bruce has also coached basketball and football and organized basketball teams to attend tournaments throughout the state of Nebraska. Darrin Otte and his brother, Eric, started Otte Dairy in the fall of 1998. They began with 45 Ayrshires and continue to milk that number. Their operation was built from scratch, as the home farm was a farrow-to-finish Darrin Otte 35 sow swine farm Columbus, IN prior to 1992. Director Candidate The Ottes farm Director At-Large approximately 250 acres with 50 acres owned by Darrin and his brother for the dairy. The remainder is owned or rented by their father, who provides them grain for purchase. Darrin has been married to his wife, Laura, for almost 16 years. They have three children: Harris, age 15; Libby, who is almost 12; and Charlotte, who will soon be 6. Only family labor is used on the farm, except for occasional hay help or silage tractor driving. In 2014, Darrin’s role on the dairy changed as Laura took over morning milking duties and Darrin began working off the farm as a freight conductor for CSX Transportation. He continues to be very active in the day-to-day operations of the farm. Darrin has served on the ABA Marketing and Classification committees and as president of the Indiana Ayrshire Association.

S t e v e n “Barney” Schmidt and his family live near Delavan, Wisconsin. Steve has worked with Ayrshires his entire life. His first experience was as a young boy at his Uncle Harold and Aunt Alice Ehrman’s South Steven Schmidt Slope Farm. As Delevan, WI an adult, he Director Candidate and his wife, Director At-Large Pauline, worked alongside her parents on Moy-Ayr Farm. Since the dispersal of Moy-Ayr Farm in 2001, they have continued with the Moy-Ayr prefix. Steve and Pauline have been married for 17 years and have two daughters, Rebecca, age 14, and Emily, age 11, who are also active on the farm. They currently have 30 Ayrshires and produce their own hay and bedding. In addition to working on the farm, Steve has been employed by The Coburn Company full-time for 16 years and Pauline has been employed at Culvers for five years. Steve is also active with his daughters’ 4-H activities and is a member of the Farm Bureau and the Dairy Committee for the Walworth County Fair. Schmidt has been a member of the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association for 17 years. For the last two years he has attended the open sessions of the June ABA Board Meetings as well as the Winter Board Meetings in Ohio. He feels it is a great way to be interactive with the board and also to ask questions. Steve is a member of the Classification Committee and has assisted the Marketing Committee with locating and handing out the signage for the Ayrshire World Event Sale at World Dairy Expo for the last three years. Steve is active with Ayrshires at the state and local level. He has served as President and as a board member of the Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. The Schmidt family has exhibited at the Wisconsin State Fair for numerous years, the Wisconsin State Show since it began, the Iowa State Fair several times, and the Walworth County Fair for 15 years. In 2017, they also exhibited at the first Spring Show in Madison, Wisconsin. Steve and Pauline have encouraged their daughters to become involved with Ayrshires since they began showing in “Little Britches” at the county fair. They have supported the Ayrshire breed by consigning animals to the Wisconsin Spring Ayrshire Sale for 15 years and also to the National Convention Sale, Iowa Spring Sale, and World Dairy Expo on numerous occasions. Steve has served as a ringman and helped with other aspects of the Wisconsin Spring Sale for several years. He also co-managed the 2012 Wisconsin National Convention Sale.
What goal would you like to see the Ayrshire breed achieve in the next decade? How do you propose to reach this goal? HANSON - Over the next decade there are many goals, both big and small, that we as a breed, and myself personally, should strive for. However, I think making these goals realistic and attainable is very important. I believe that we have the type of cow and the quality of breeders that, with motivation and ambition, could propel our breed into the position as the new “it” breed. We witnessed it with the Jersey breed as the demand for better reproduction, higher components and smaller cows swept through the dairy industry over the past decade. In some areas, we have already seen this happen for Ayrshires. International genetic sales have been increasing over the past few years, and within the show circuit the demand for the next class winning Ayrshire has never been higher. That being said, with the world-wide dairy economy being the way it is, I think that survival, along with the goal of slow but steady growth, should be focused on. I know this may seem like setting the bar low, but many things are going to change over the next few years and efficiency is going to a big concern for dairy farmers. I think our Ayrshire cow exemplifies that as well, or more so, than any other breed out there, and it could make Ayrshire the “breed to have” over the next decade. KEMPKES - What I would like to see as a goal for the Ayrshire breed is to increase the breed population. If we can increase our cow population, our genetic pool of bulls to pull from could then increase. This could give our breeders the ability to expand and implement different lines of genetics into their herds, which could continue to enhance the characteristics of the Ayrshire breed. OTTE – The main goal would be to stay together as an association. I would like to see the Ayrshire breed expand into more herds by pushing our excellent grazing ability to organic herds and low somatic cell count and higher components to larger herds. RODGERS - One goal that I would have for the Ayrshire cow is that the cow is recognized for the entire package. They are totally adaptable to all management styles, and offers milk with great components and easy human digestibility. My question to the membership would be, how often do we enter into dialogue and purposely bring the Ayrshire breed and their attributes into the conversation? Recently I presented at the PASA winter convention and the topic was Climate Change. It occurred to me as I was preparing my presentation that Ayrshires could be part of the solution; a cow that grazes energetically, can withstand higher or lower temperature extremes; making green grass into white milk. That is something I will stand behind! And that notion, when introduced, at PASA received lots of affirmative nods and comments. SCHMIDT - Ayrshires have to stay relevant in the dairy industry - that should be the number one goal. To do this, we need to continue to gather research and data from university settings like West Virginia to show the dairy world that Ayrshires can compete. With this information we should continue to promote Ayrshire cattle in multi-breed publications to keep them in dairymen’s minds. Some of our cows are in Holstein herds, and I
have seen firsthand that Ayrshires can compete and milk right alongside with Holsteins. This is just an example of how we need to push to have Ayrshire cows in other breed herds. ULLMER - My biggest goal is to connect buyers of Ayrshires with sellers of Ayrshires. It doesn’t matter if it’s a kid that wants a 4-H calf or if it’s a large dairyman looking to expand. We have to make quality cattle available to buyers, whether it’s through public or private sales. I get calls almost daily from people looking to sell or purchase Ayrshires. I really enjoy assisting them on getting the deal done. We really need to expand our breed into herds both large and small. That starts with one animal at a time. WALSH - One goal that I would like the Ayrshire breed achieve over the next decade is to see more involvement in, and cooperation with, the association. I know that within any organization there are many different competing views, and visions of success. The small number of Ayrshire cows and breeders left requires us to find ways to work together to make the most out of what we have. To that end, I think that clear communication of goals from the association as well as genuine participation by breeders and state and regional associations is necessary. Also, I think the association needs to make sure that its’ goals are representative of what the many different breeders are striving for. To grow the breed, we as breeders, need to pursue a uniform but inclusive outreach to the rest of the industry. How can we promote a breed to outsiders if we cannot agree to some basic principles of what we are trying to do within the breed? WOODIS - We need to increase production, and especially focus on components. There is interest in A2 vs. A1 milk, because of this, we should be identifying more cows and bulls with A2A2 genes. The dairy economy isn’t great currently, but it would be worth it for breeders to test one or two cows in their herd. That would give more data to use in breeding choices. Ayrshire milk has been shown to be better for cheese making, so we should encourage more “All Ayrshire” cheeses to be marketed. Whenever breeders get together the question always comes up, “What bulls are you using?” We have to accept the fact that we have a problem, and that is lack of bull diversity. There are good cow families out there that should be tapped into. If you could change the dairy industry’s view of the Ayrshire breed, what message would you send? HANSON - The main view that the dairy industry has of the Ayrshire breed, both commercially and within the registered circles, is that Ayrshires are a hobby breed that don’t possess any realworld value. To these people I would point to the fact that while Ayrshires may not be the leading breed for production or components, and is yet to have the same premium placed on them within the registered and show ring circles as maybe Holsteins and Jerseys do, we are the most complete breed that is out there. When you combine the production potential that we all know Ayrshires possess, no matter what type of management style they are in, along with the component advantages they have over other

Ayrshire Digest
“high production” breeds and pair this with their advantage in feed efficiency and health traits, you have one of the most versatile, efficient and, more to the point, profitable cows out there. Why wouldn’t you have Ayrshires in your herd? KEMPKES - The view of the Ayrshire breed that I would like to change is that the Ayrshire cow is only a show cow. We need to continue to state positive traits such as milking Ayrshires is economically feasible. We also need emphasize her ability to adapt to different management styles, feed efficiencies, low somatic cell counts, positive health traits, longevity, her ability to strive in different climates and her ability to produce large quantities of high quality milk. OTTE – We need to send the message that Ayrshires are efficient cows that have few health problems. RODGERS - We all know that the dairy industry is undergoing stress and challenges and with that there will be changes. I want the Ayrshire cow to be a positive agent to that change. Ayrshires are hardy and versatile. SCHMIDT - Ayrshires can work and compete in any management situation they are put in. They may not make 40,000-pound records like Holsteins, but they will milk more than enough to cover their feed costs and they will make up for less bulk tank milk with their higher fat and protein contents. The Ayrshires will breed back, live longer, are more efficient with less health problems and make a greater return on their investment. In short, don’t be scared to get involved with them, because Ayrshires will run with your Holsteins. ULLMER - I feel the Ayrshire breed is viewed as the “other red cow”. The Ayrshire cow is a moderate sized cow that fits well in mixed breed herds. They can work well in all management styles from grazing to large free-stall dairies. With the tight profit margins in today’s dairy industry, it is important to showcase that Ayrshire cows convert feed into milk very efficiently. The higher components and excellent udder health have always been an added bonus. WALSH - I would tell folks in the dairy industry that an Ayrshire cow is very useful in many ways. I believe that we must put financial numbers alongside the health traits that Ayrshire breeders expound. I often hear breeders say that Ayrshires last longer, have lower somatic cell count, breed better, produce better milk solids, and are more efficient. I think we need to keep saying these things, but also back them up with data to support this argument. As dairy producers, we know that these traits are economically important. Given the cost of replacements, we know that cows that last longer and make higher quality milk can make more money. We need to put dollar figures on these traits so that we have something to present to other producers. In these times of poor dairy economics, it is hard to get producers to change, however, it could create a great market for our young stock if we could get more commercial dairies to incorporate Ayrshire cattle into their herds. Also, I think we need to make sure as we move forward as a breed we continue to concentrate on breeding the traits that separate us from the other breeds. I do not believe that more oversized cows that make more 3.25% milk are the answer. We already have plenty of milk in
March/April 2018
the country, hence the milk price problem. WOODIS - We need to show that Ayrshires can produce profitably. We need to promote their grazing abilities, their health traits, and how good Ayrshires are at feed conversion. Ayrshires can and will compete at the feed bunk. The price to buy an Ayrshire calf or cow replacement is generally lower. Requirements for sale animals should be breed average or higher. Poor quality consignments have a negative effect on Ayrshires to other breeds. There seems to be an increase in new Ayrshire buyers and we should have high quality animals for buyers to choose from. What idea(s) can you bring to the board of directors to help the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association prosper during this time of economic uncertainty when our members are struggling for survival in the dairy industry? HANSON - In times like these it’s easy for anyone whether it be a breeder, an industry person, or a breed association as a whole, to get “stuck in a rut” and keep doing things as they have always been done. It’s also easy to lose motivation and ambition when all the hard work and time that gets put in yields such small rewards. I hope to bring a fresh set of eyes to old problems, along with maybe a different mentality, as well as fresh ambition and motivation about how we as a breed need to move forward. Having said this, I hope to use every bit of knowledge and wisdom that former board members, and more experienced Ayrshire breeders, have and are willing to give me, to get through problems they have already encountered and overcome. I also hope to use their advice to help avoid pitfalls that have maybe plagued the breed in the past. All in all, making this breed move forward is going to be a team effort and while everyone may have a different opinion and role, we are all striving to reach the same goal, and that’s to grow and promote the tremendous individual that is the Ayrshire cow. KEMPKES - A few ideas that I can think of to help the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association prosper during the economic downturn is to limit mailings by offering the website as a one-stop shop for breeders to do their business. For example, we could set up billing and payments online. This would decrease the cost of mailings thus increasing the bottom line. Additionally, I would recommend that we offer big corporations the opportunity to advertise their business on the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association website, this would increase the income for our business. I would also recommend that we find a college intern to work on enhancing our website. Colleges can offer paid and unpaid internships. To help the bottom line, I would recommend this be an unpaid position, or offer a paid internship with minimal pay. Updates are needed to our website and ultimately this could give a college student some coding experience while working towards their degree. OTTE - I think we really need to research the old saying, “Ayrshire milk is easily digestible”. A niche like this may be the saving grace of the breed. It seems like the co-ops are looking for ways to get rid of smaller farms. RODGERS - Three topics of importance to the
board and to the membership are: value-added products, grazing and the next generation. Creativity is key, along with lending an ear to the dreams and desires of those coming along behind. SCHMIDT - Forming a multi-breed cooperation with other small breeds like Brown Swiss and Milking Shorthorn is a good idea to help the Ayrshire breed. This will become essential in survival for Ayrshire, as well as the others. Using each breed associations’ strengths will only make each breed stronger and able to withstand the economic storm we are in. We also need to continue to get more Ayrshires into herds. One way to do this we need to encourage youth to purchase Ayrshires for their 4-H projects. When they have them on their farms, they will be impressed with them and add more. One example is the Wisconsin Shayr-A-Heifer program. This is a program that helps young people have a Registered Ayrshire for their dairy project. After two years, the junior member has the option of buying the heifer or selling her at the Wisconsin ABA Spring Sale and obtaining 50% of the proceeds. The ABA could start a program such as this to introduce more Ayrshires to herds. ULLMER - I am a young dairyman. I live by the ups and downs of the dairy market. I believe it is very important to have that perspective on the board. My experience of marketing my own Ayrshire genetics, as well as helping other with selling theirs, will be used to move the Ayrshire breed forward in the future. WALSH - As we go through yet another difficult period of milk prices, I believe that one of the roles of the association is to make sure that the members have access to quality information for making decisions. This can be done cheaply by utilizing the ABA website and/or member listservs, mailings, Digest inserts, articles and social media. There is lots of information out there that needs to be curated to make sure it is useful and distributed to the membership. There are as many ways to operate a farm as there are farmers but the one constant is that no farmer can make good decisions without correct and timely information. WOODIS - I think the best thing to do now, with the dairy industry not doing too well, is to try to keep registrations and transfers up. Perhaps some of the state clubs can help by doing some promotion on a regional basis. Encourage youth to be involved in Ayrshire activities. Also encourage breeders to use the ABA programs available to them if possible. Regardless of how an animal gets sold, if she is registered, classified and milk recorded, she should bring a better price.
ABA Member information and voting ballots will be mailed after May 15, 2018. Please be sure your membership is current to take advantage of voting privileges. 15

My Story ABA Executive Director Becky Payne interviews Craig Hawksley of West Kingston, RI
Visiting with Ayrshire breeders across the country is truly one of the highlights of my job. Sometimes you meet people and you can just see what makes them tick. I had a chance to sit down recently with a special Ayrshire breeder, Craig Hawksley of West Kingston, RI. Craig is a deep-thinking, caring man who has a wide variety of talents. In New England, his Sweet-Pepper prefix is respected throughout the region for his breeding of strong, stylish Ayrshires that prosper in a variety of management styles. He has mentored countless dairy youth and given them opportunities to work with Ayrshire cattle. He’s also an accomplished carpenter and owns his construction business. I know it sounds dramatic to say this, but as I was visiting with Craig just before the Christmas season, I thought wow, he possesses so many of the traits all Christians hold dear in Jesus Christ. Jesus, also a carpenter, is revered by Christians as a builder of people. I think Craig Hawksley is a builder of people as well, especially since he has officially mentored nearly 25 young people with Ayrshire projects over the years.
Q A
How did you get started with Ayrshires?
As a kid, I spent time with my grandparents at their farm and eventually started helping with chores. I spent a lot of that time with my Uncle Oliver Cottrell and loved being around the animals. By the time I was 9, I was helping milking and driving the tractor. My uncle’s herd was all Ayrshires, and the highlight of my 4-H years was to go to
the Big E. I studied agriculture for two years in college until I took a semester off to start working for a builder. In 1987 with a $640 investment, I bought a cow and calf from Oliver and started my own Sweet Pepper herd. Everything I’ve bred goes back to those original two animals. My success goes to the genetics developed by Oliver at Cottrell Homestead. My sister, Pam Jeffrey, has been a huge part of my Ayrshire life. We showed twin heifers in 1961, and all of the animals we own together trace back to those original twins. My early goal was to breed animals worth showing, and then breed a string that could go to a national show. In 1995, my dream was realized with exhibiting the Junior Champion, Senior Champion and Grand Champion from my herd at the Eastern National Show.
When visiting with Craig, and watching him interact with his young friend Kylie Jordan of Hope Valley, RI, I realized I didn’t really have to ask him why he does it. The answer was written all over his face. Craig encourages and mentors young people to become Ayrshire enthusiasts because it gives him great joy. He loves the Ayrshire breed, and he loves seeing how teaching kids to care for their animals has the ability to change lives. Craig Hawksley is a living testimony on why small actions can have huge consequences. A small bleep in time does have the ability to impact an entire family. Meet 11-year-old Kylie Jordan of Hope Valley, RI. She and her family met Craig through a friend who had been work-

Q
Fellow New Englanders have told me over the years that Sweet-Pepper genetics always sell well at New England sales because animals from you seem to thrive in a variety of management set-ups. What do you think about when you make mating decisions and are decideing what genetics to sell?
A
When looking at bulls, I like to look at the depth of pedigree on the maternal side for at least two generations. I look for a modern style, good feet and legs,

mammary system, body depth and final score. It’s even better if I can talk to the breeder and learn more about the cow family. I’ve collected semen on a few bulls over the years, like Hannibal, Harry, Sam and two Francis sons. I think it takes time to build a solid reputation over the years. You have to treat people with honesty and integrity. I get regular inquiries, mostly from word of mouth. I work hard to sell animals at the right time, at their highest quality. My goal is to keep increasing quality and market more in the future as I have more than I need right now.
Q A
You have an awful lot going on. How do you keep up with everything?
I keep heifers at my place so that helps me keep tabs on them. When they freshen, they’re moved to Cottrell Homestead to be integrated into the milking herd. Right now I have about 24 milking cows there. I help milk at night and on the weekends, and do the reproductive work for the farm. I started a construction company
ing for him. Her mom said Kylie already had a connection with animals as she used to ride horses and raises chickens, and it was no surprise to her family that she especially liked the baby calves most in the beginning. Kylie started going to Craig’s farm every day, and he presented her with an opportunity to lease two heifers. With her parents’ support, Kylie hasn’t looked back! For all those who frequented the tanbark trail this past year, Kylie was Craig’s side-kick with the long blond braid and huge smile on her face. She got a great start in her first year in the Ayrshire business with Sweet-Pepper Predator Shale, who went on to be named 2017 HM All-American and Unanimous Jr. All-American Fall Calf. Kylie has big goals for herself and her Ayrshires. She’s moving beyond lease animals and has purchased some Ayrshires from Craig. Kylie’s love of life is apparent in everything she does, and she says she likes the personality of her Ayrshires the most. Craig is going to have his work cut out for him this next year as Kylie has March/April 2018
in 1983, and that is my job during the day. I married my wife Bonnie in 1984 and credit her for our success as well.
Q A Q A
How did you pick Sweet Pepper as your prefix?
It came from the plant on our farm. Why is working with youth and Ayrshire people so important to you?
Mentoring is important. If you can make someone’s life better, even for a short time, it’s worth it. I don’t have a lot of money, but I do have a lot of heart that I’m willing to share. The kids are my reward, and each one is different. I try to take them everywhere I can and give them as many opportunities as possible. Ayrshire cows and Ayrshire people are my life. We can all learn a little from Craig Hawksley – we’ve all got a lot of heart that we can share.
decided that learning fitting and showmanship skills are next on her agenda. Kylie’s parents and Craig worked out an agreement for him to put his carpenter skills to work building a barn on their property to develop their own Ayrshire prefix, Brushy Brook. This is a success story in the making!
Kylie Jordan hit the jackpot with her first junior Ayrshire project, Pepper Predator Shale, who won the fall calf class at national shows.
Foundation Seeks Grant Proposals
Scott Noll and his sons Lincoln and Axel have appreciated their start in the Ayrshire breed through the Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders ‘Beginning in Ayrshires’ project
The U.S. Ayrshire Breeders Foundation has $3,500 in grant funds available for 2018. The funds can be used for: breed advancement (genetics or promotion), breed development (program development or youth education) and international development in the Ayrshire breed. “The US Ayrshire Breeders’ Foundation is a very worthwhile cause providing money for research and promotion projects, such as the yearly grant funded by the Foundation,” explains Foundation Committee Member Doug Fenton. “We believe the activities of the Foundation will help preserve the future of the Ayrshire breed for our youth. In order to continue funding these projects, the Foundation needs contributions. Fenton says, “Corporate sponsors are nice, yet all breeders can help too. The proceeds from the sale of a bull calf, a load of firewood or a few bales of hay can make a difference in the Foundation’s programs. If everyone gives a little, it will mean a lot.” The 2017 grant of $3,000 was awarded to the Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association for their ‘Beginning in Ayrshires’ program where awards are presented to new buyers towards the purchase of their first Ayrshire. If you have an activity worthy of the Foundation’s consideration, we urge you to submit a grant application by the deadline of May 15, 2018. Grant applications can be obtained from the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association office at 1224 Alton Darby Creek Rd., Suite B, Columbus, Ohio 43228; online at www.usayrshire.com; or by calling 614-335-0020. Applications from industry, educational institutions, groups or individuals will be accepted.

quality, safe products for consumers. As a teacher who recognizes this disconnect, I try to connect students with as many guest speakers, trips, activities and internships to bridge the gap. Ag teachers are always looking for opportunities for kids. Ayrshire breeders should consider reaching out to their local FFA advisor for calf leases, guest speaking opportunities, etc.

Tell us a little bit about one or two cow families you guys are excited about. Our deepest cow family in the herd is by far our “T” family that traces back to one of the first cows purchased by the farm in 1994, Thelma. She had a granddaughter, Locust-Spring Skybuck Trixie that was a matriarch to the herd, producing 6 daughters that are all scored VG-88 or higher. There are currently 17 of her offspring in the barn, and the extended family has produced numerous EX’s, All Americans, nominations and show winners. The family combines style,

longevity and production to produce high performing cows. A few of the highlights of the family are listed below: Locust-Spring Tequila Rose EX-91 3E (Avenger x EX-90 2E Jaye x EX-93 Skybuck) 1st WDE 2010, HM All American Summer Yearling. Her daughter, Locust-Spring Predator Tuaca, was fourth at WDE this year as a Summer Yearling and was nominated All-American. Tuaca is a potential 4th generation of bred and owned EX. Locust-Spring Raven TakeAShot is a granddaughter of Trixie and is proving herself to be another matriarch of the herd. She’s EX-93 2E, is projected to over 30,000 lbs. this lactation, and has made over 100,000M after seven calves and five lactations. (Only four lactations are on test/official record.) She is 100% Ayrshire with zero Tri-Star blood, making her and her offspring excellent outcross prospects. She has numerous ET and IVF calves on the ground and in-utero and we’re excited for the potential of this line of the “T” family. Her Poker daughter was fifth at Harrisburg as a Jr. Two-Year-Old and is due in June again. We think she is sure to

be a contender for the fall shows this year. Our “P” family is another line of cows we are anxious to develop. We purchased a group of cattle from Colton Davis in 2013, and have continued to develop the genetics in our herd. We purchased Davis Ramius Pork and her dam, CTD Trident Pride along with Pride’s full sister, CTD Trident Parachute. All three were eventually scored EX, making Pork a 4th generation EX. She has been flushed extensively, as she produces high TPI offspring and she has been on the top CPI list numerous times. This family produces strong, balanced offspring that milk well. We also had our first bred and owned hit a max score as a three-year-old this fall, Locust Spring Potter Halle, who scored EX-91 and is due back this July as a third calf four-year-old. We’ve bred or owned over 20 EX cows, and had numerous All-Americans or nominations. We look forward to continuing to build our herd as new farm owners and believe the Ayrshire breed has an exciting future as well.
