Ayrshire Digest

Executive Director’s Report With change comes appreciation of our past… In early April 2018, the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association announced to our members and customers that we will be making a change in the format and publishing of the Ayrshire Digest. This announcement came after many months of discussion and planning with your Board of Directors and staff. It’s a bittersweet time, as we have enjoyed a great relationship with the American Guernsey AssociaBecky Payne tion (owners of Purebred Publishing Inc) for nearly 22 years. We’ve discussed many times over the years the importance of industry partnerships to the ABA, and this has certainly been the case with Guernsey. We’ve established great friendships and business ties with their staff and board members since that first Ayrshire Digest was published under the Guernsey umbrella with the September/October 1996 issue. With this issue of the Ayrshire Digest marking the end of an era, we thank the American Guernsey Association for their friendship and service. And now anticipation for new beginnings… I am SO excited! We’re moving the Ayrshire Digest to a platform that will bridge the gap from our traditional publication methods to add an online venue that will allow us to share our story with literally hundreds of thousands of dairy enthusiasts around the world, with every issue of our magazine. Additionally, we’re stepping out of our comfort zone and working more with some of our sister dairy breed associations. Teaming up with the Brown Swiss and Milking Shorthorn Associations, we have worked with Dairy Agenda Today (DAT) to develop a marketing and communications strategy for our associations that will give great opportunities for growth as we move forward. Beginning with the September/October 2018 issue, Dairy Agenda Today will become the publisher of the Ayrshire Digest in a combined magazine with the Milking Shorthorn Journal. Now before you have time to think that your directors and I are selling the Ayrshire breed down the river, please be assured that

May/June 2018

measures are being taken to preserve breed identity while taking advantage of this great opportunity. The Ayrshire Digest is not going away. It is being printed with another breed magazine, giving you further bang for your advertising buck. The normal things that you associate with the Digest will still be there, even the Ayrshire Digest logo on the cover. The exciting news here is that we are creating new opportunities for the Ayrshire breed to move positively into the future. Let’s break this down and examine all of the benefits… - At a minimum, on a 5-year average, DAT has seen at least 150,000 visits per month to their website, and some months were well over 200,000 visits. - In addition to the printed magazine, DAT will place the full page ads for each issue on their website for 30 continuous days, plus the ads will be placed in a public Facebook folder for every issue. For those who choose a smaller size print ad, for a very nominal fee you can have the ad upgraded to a full page for online purposes. - Ad rates are reduced from the current full page rate of $515 to $485. Yes, you’re reading that correctly! Your ad will reach over 150,000 people per issue, for a lower price. Plus, if you advertise more than three times during a 12-month period, the next three ads are discounted 10%. (*DAT staff will provide all of the details on discounts) - Think this through carefully. You can place a full page ad that reaches over 150,000 readers for a maximum of 3 cents per reader. We should be shouting this from the rooftops! Ayrshire breeders have never had this type of opportunity before, and we must take full advantage of this ability to share the merits of our breed to each and every dairy enthusiast out there. What an opportunity for individuals, regional and state clubs, sale managers, industry partners and more. - DAT is designing a special place on their website for the breed publications so they will be easily recognizable. - If you need more convincing on the merits of advertising, please call me! I will enjoy brainstorming with each and every one of you. The summer issue of the Ayrshire Digest will be published inhouse by the ABA. We will have convention coverage and more in this issue. Members of the ABA Promotion Committee are assisting with ad calls for this issue, so get creative with your ideas. We encourage you to support the summer Digest with your advertisement!

When Dreams Meet

Grazing is essential for the operation as shown in the photo above with Brett, Diesel and Jessica Dixon. Below Diesel gives special attention to one of his favorites.

By Kathaleen Kuhn and Becky Payne Stil Dreamn Dairy is the home of Brett, Jessica and Diesel Dixon from Conway, Missouri. The dream came naturally since Brett and Jessica both hail from dairy backgrounds; with Jessica growing

up with Ayrshires and Holsteins and Brett with mostly Guernsey cattle. The Dixons dream of dairy farming began with the purchase of some land back in 2011, and with that, Stil Dreamn Dairy became a reality. Since their farm’s

inception, they have strived to make improvements and expand their operation. What began with a few cows and a little hope has now grown into the ownership of 120 acres and the rental of another 100 acres. Despite the current downtrends in the dairy industry, the couple seems genuinely excited to see what the future holds for their dairy. Like many farm families, Jessica and Brett both have off-farm jobs while also providing the main workforce for their dairy. In addition to looking for a relief milker to help lessen some of the strain on themselves, the Dixons are also very appreciative of the extra help they often receive from dedicated family members. Luckily, Jessica’s brothers and Brett’s sister are often available to help with extra heavy workloads on the farm giving further evidence to their entire family’s passion for the dairy industry. When asked about the struggles of starting out in the dairy industry, Jessica noted that one of the biggest challenges she has faced is being taken seriously, especially as a young woman trying to make a name for herself in the industry. Despite the challenges, Jessica’s hard work and determination is obviously paying off as she received the Ayrshire Young Breeder

n o i t a n i m r e t Award in 2016! As young dairy producers, the Dixons recognize the importance of continually encouraging interest in the dairy industry; and they enthusiastically support area youth by selling several calves each year for 4-H and FFA projects. The couple feels rewarded by helping kids grow in their knowledge and passion for this equally demanding and exciting industry. In addition, they feel strongly that dairy plays a vital role in the local economy; and they work hard to support their area’s agriculture industry. Jessica has openly stated several times that if it weren’t for the Ayrshire cow, she might not be in the dairy business! According to many farmers like the Dixons, the Ayrshire breed provides the total package when it comes to dairy cattle. “They are a hardy breed with great feed to milk conversion. In slim times like we are in now, having cows that can still produce high quality and quantity of milk on a lower grade feed is important,” explained Jessica. Another great trait this family loves about Ayrshires is their milk’s low somatic cell count and high milk solids which translates into increased milk checks. Ayrshires are relatively selfsufficient and do well without a great deal of intense human care which also means lower vet bills and less monetary inputs; adding more benefits that become increasingly important in a challenging economy for this farm. When asked about her favorite cows and cow families, Jessica said, “A few of my all-time favorites would have to include Gatton Wilton Jazzmenia, EX-92, 2008 Reserve All-American Jr. 3-YearOld. And, anyone who has known me for longer than 30 seconds knows how much I love Cherry! Even at almost 14 years old, she’s still very much the queen of the herd, and her daughters continue to follow suit!” Jessica excitedly added that while there are many great cows on their farm, what really puts them into her “favorites” category is their demeanor, since that is what truly makes them standouts in the great amount of time she spends with them. When it comes to breeding, Stil Dreamn Dairy utilizes both artificial May/June 2018

insemination and natural services allowing them to continually build upon their herd’s strong genetics. The family is particularly proud of their hardy cows sired by Wilton, and really appreciates the overall power and conformation they have obtained by breeding them to Calimero and his sons. According to Jessica, their overall favorite sire has to be their own herd bull, Gatton Calimero Charlie, a son of Gatton Paddy Cherry, EX-94 4E, a five-time All-American nominee in milking form. Stil Dreamn Dairy operates a double four herringbone milking parlor, milking roughly 60-75 head per day. Their parlor features timing feeders that allow them to increase their efficiency and customize rations by adjusting outputs for production accordingly for each individual cow. The Gattons strive to produce as much of their own feed as possible and choose to wrap Rye and Sudex grasses as well as store fescue to supplement their feed in the winter. According to Jessica, they have experimented quite a bit with various grasses and have found that specific varieties of Rye rotated with Sudex in the warmer season works best for their operation. Farm tour participants

can learn more about Stil Dreamn Dairy’s findings regarding grasses on a fun and informative “hay ride” as they travel the farm learning more about the Dixons’ experiences and insight in grass varieties and production. The Dixons plan to continue to expand their herd and improve their milk production in a variety of ways. Jessica believes the best way to adapt to new markets and unpredictable shifts in the economy is to make your operation unique and to find a niche, which is what they hope to do by introducing their own dairy products marketed on their farm. They would also like to begin milking in groups by breed, along with the production of their own brand of specialty cheeses and dairy products. As you can see, Stil Dreamn Dairy isn’t just dreaming about an exciting future in the dairy industry; they are working hard to make it a reality. The Dixons look forward to being a part of the National Ayrshire Convention tour and hope to offer folks a fun and informative experience as they share their knowledge and love of the dairy industry in the ‘Show-Me’ state.

Two Dairies, One Farm By Kathaleen Kuhn & Becky Payne The first stop on the National Ayrshire Convention tours will be at the Jensen brothers’ farm. Located in Conway, Missouri, the farm is now owned and operated by Jeff and Jay Jensen and their families. Their father, Charles Jensen, started the farm back in 1979, and the family has been dedicated to producing quality milk for almost 30 years. While operating a farm alongside your siblings is relatively common in the dairy industry, you might say the Jensen brothers tackle their own situation a bit more uniquely than most. You see, Jeff and Jay each have their own individual dairy herds, operating as the Four J and TriJ-Ayr Farms. While both dairy herds are housed on the same property, and they share the same equipment to cut back on costs, they otherwise operate as two separate operations. Jay milks about 50 head twice a day and obviously has a sweet spot for the Ayrshires in his name sake herd, TriJ-Ayr. His brother Jeff’s herd is slightly larger as he routinely milks around 80 head, featuring 15 registered Ayrshires and 21 Guernseys with the remainder being Holstein and Ayrshire crosses. Jay and Jeff milk their herds separately; consequently their double four herringbone parlor stays busy with four milkings per day. The brothers both feed their lactating cows a silage mix in the parlor while heifers get a 16% protein barn mix they purchase from a local feed mill. Both brothers are very interested in new research and practices designed to increase grazing efficiency. The adop-

tion of such practices has allowed their farm to become more self-sustaining and has reduced input costs. Jay plants Rye grasses while Jeff adds Causation Bluestem grasses to the pastures that they rotational graze. The Ayrshire breed fits perfectly into the Jensen brothers’ equation for efficiency as the breed is widely known its excellent feed conversion. Since the large pastures are also the main housing for the cows, the robust Ayrshires do very well in their outdoor housing as they are only in the barn during milking. Each brother’s business maintains separate bulk tanks, selling their milk independently while their mother fulfills the role of their onsite “accountant”. She

receives all milk checks and then allocates expenses to each business based on the number of cows milked by each. When asked about the positive aspects of sharing the majority of physical farm assets but having separate herd operations, Jay said, “It gives us a chance to personalize things; but when there’s a big project to tackle, it’s great to have two families to be all hands-on-deck to get things done.” Jeff ‘s favorite cow family is the Cherub cow from the Cherry family, which hails from Stil Dreamn Dairy. The brothers both pay close attention to what genes positively influence their respective herds. They routinely focus a lot on genetic vigor and heavily utilize ABA sire summaries when making breeding decisions. Relying mostly on artificial insemination, they also utilize natural services in some cases. Although they like to select the best bull for each cow individually, they have used Burdette quite a bit recently across the herd and really like the feet and legs on his daughters. In anticipation of a specialty market for A2 milk, the Jensen brothers have strategically chosen to use exclusively A2 A2 Ayrshire bulls. In a world where new products and specialty markets pop up every day, the Jensens hope to be on the forefront of marketing their farm’s

A2 A2 milk. Both Four J and TriJ-Ayr farms take pride in their 100% purebred registered Ayrshires. They believe that the Ayrshire

breed has many perks, especially their great feed to milk conversion. Jeff also proposes that colored breeds, such as Ayrshire, can improve income by increasing overall fat and solids content while

decreasing somatic cell counts; and he has the milk checks and records to prove it! Unsurprisingly, the Ayrshires are well known for these traits, which is one of the many reasons why Four J and TriJ-Ary Farms love having them in their herds! From their personal experience, the brothers highly encourage others to consider adding Ayrshires to their herds. Their Ayrshires have prospered on reasonably low input costs while increasing production. The Jensens are excited to welcome fellow dairy industry professionals to their farm and look forward to sharing their perspective on genetics, efficient management practices, and their innovative and resourceful thinking related to specialized marketing.

From Minneso this father-son duo continues the By Kathaleen Kuhn & Becky Payne Although Lyle Unnasch and his son Brent currently reside in Conway, Missouri, their story doesn’t start there. Lyle began dairying in Minnesota many years ago where he had a second occupation as a truck driver. As Brent progressed into adulthood, he assumed most of the responsibilities for milking and caring for the herd of 40 Ayrshire cows. After careful consideration, they decided that Missouri would be a better fit for their operation. Once the Unnasches decided to relocate in 2011, they found exactly what they had been looking for and purchased a pre-established dairy farm in Conway, Missouri. Brent moved down first to work on their new farm alongside the previous owners, giving him some great knowledge and insight on the great differences in dairying in a new region, while Lyle finished the family’s business in Minnesota. Once Lyle joined his son in Missouri, they fully took over the farm, creating Hillcrest Farm. As a part of establishing their new herd, Lyle and Brent purchased many cows from surrounding farms and quickly joined the society of local Conway dairies. The 275-acre farm features a double four herringbone parlor design, where they milk their herd two times a day. Brent happily reported that their cows are producing an average of 50 pounds of milk per cow daily. They, like many other dairies, choose to feed their cows a grain mix while milking. The young heifers are mostly grass-fed. As common in practice in Missouri, the cows at Hillcrest Farm are only inside while they are being milked and spend rest of their time in wooded, grassy pastures, where the broad trees provide plenty of shelter. The Unnasches are big proponents of grazing and practice rotational grazing

Collecting and restoring cars give the Unnasches an enjoyable hobby.

on their land. Brent says the Ayrshires make a perfect fit at Hillcrest as they are a breed that can thrive on mostly grass diets. The practice of grazing is typical for many Missouri livestock farmers, since varieties of their native warm-season grasses, such as Caucasian Bluestems, have high protein contents. To add extra volume and nutritional value to their pastures, the Unnasches chose to seed clover into their fields. Whereas they heavily rely on grazing in the summer, they must supplement their feed in the cold months. While they strive to harvest the majority of their own hay, the duo does purchase grain and alfalfa to increase the nutrition in their feed and improve their milk production in the winter. In times like now, Brent says that cutting back on additional feedstuffs and

relying on their quality hay and grasses is an excellent way to save on input costs. Another tactic they have used to cut down on costs is to take their cattle to the vet’s office instead of paying for a farm visit for common veterinary work. Brent noted that having proper vaccination and heifer health programs are vital in preventing costly vet bills later on. From experience, the Unnasches choose to use natural services in the hot summer for the best conception rates. Beginning in the fall months, they focus on artificial insemination to achieve the best genetics possible in their herd. Brent said they are using quite a bit of Burdette now and noted that he liked the soundness of the daughters he has given them. They love the Ayrshire’s vigor and genetics so much, they’ve been cross-breeding

ota to Missouri, eir passion for the dairy industry other breeds on the farm to Ayrshire. On Hillcrest Dairy, there are current 1/3 registered Ayrshires and 2/3 grade, with the hopes of one day becoming a 100% registered Ayrshire dairy. Lyle and Brent appreciate the Ayrshire cow’s strength and durability that have stood the test of time. Ayrshires are undoubtedly well known to be highly adaptive, in addition to their many other valuable traits. For these reasons, Brent believes that more dairy farmers

should take Ayrshires into consideration when looking at adding to their herds. “Ayrshires can work just about anywhere; they are quality milkers that never disappoint,” he explained. While Brent and Lyle are the main labor forces on the farm, they also employ a 13-year-old boy who works alongside them for two hours each day doing a variety of tasks. This arrangement works out well for all parties, as Lyle and Brent enjoy mentoring the young man in the art of dairying and hope to instill their passion

May/June 2018

for the industry in him. As of right now, Lyle and Brent aren’t looking to expand their farm. Their immediate goals are to improve efficiency and quality with the cows they currently own. When not busy milking or keeping up with other farm maintenance, both father and son enjoy restoring old cars and tractors. One of their most recent projects was restoring a 1951 Oliver 88

tractor. To accommodate their hobby, they even built an additional barn to house their treasures. The Unnasches are looking forward to connecting with others who share their Ayrshire enthusiasm as they look forward to hosting a tour during the 2018 National Ayrshire Convention.

BARRENS VIEW FARM

A Bright Future with Ayrshires

BY CHERI OECHSLE for Purebred Publishing

Overlooking the beautiful Barrens Valley and surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains, Barrens View Farm is home to Dan, Lori, Nathan and Rebekah Baumgardner. Purchased by Dan’s parents in 1975 and then by Dan and Lori in 1990, the Baumgardner’s have survived the critics and thrived. “When we started out,” Lori said, “everyone told us, ‘you can’t make a decent living milking only 60 cows.’ Well, thanks to my hubby’s tremendous management and cow skills, and by the grace of God, we raised six kids on the income from 60 cows!” Located on a hill, aptly named Big Dam Hill (there was once a dam on the creek below the farm) in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, the Baumgardners farm 200 acres of corn, hay, barley and triticale as well as operate a 160-animal dairy. They milk a mixed herd of Ayrshires, Holsteins and Jerseys with a rolling herd average over 21,000M on 70 cows. The farm is operated 100% by family. “Dan and Nathan do the lion’s share of the farm work,” Lori stated. “Rebekah helps in the evenings when she gets home from her job where she makes ice cream for Perrydell Farm in York, Pennsylvania. Nathan also works off the farm as an A.I. technician for Select Sire Power. Nathan is in charge of the feeding program here, and he makes almost all of the breeding decisions. Rebekah and Nate share the job of calf care. Rebekah is also the one who decides which cows and heifers will be a part of our show string. Dan does all the milking, with help from Nate or Rebekah, and calls the shots when it comes to crops. Me, I laughingly tell people that I’m in charge of the Barrens View Farm Household Division. I haven’t worked off the farm since we were married. We’ve never had employees. All the grunt work has been done by Dan and I and our kids. Nathan is currently making changes to the feeding program. We’re now feeding a TMR to the herd.” Two of their favorite Ayrshire cows that

have served as foundation animals have been Sunrise-Ridge Farah EX-92 2E, bred by Todd Frescura, and S & M-Ayr Herman’s Marie EX-92 3E, bred by Mike Zook. Farah has a best record of 24,626M 873F 795P at 5-04 345D. A Galney-EPC Ripken Raven daughter from a 90-point dam, Farah has had four daughters, including an 85-point Yellow Briar Journeyman, an 83 and 88-point Burdette milking daughters with another Burdette yearling as well as several sons. Marie is a Visserdale Herman out of an 84-point dam. Marie is a multiple AllAmerican honoree with 122,470M 4,620F 3,553P lifetime to date. She has a daughter by Burdette scored EX-91, a Mowry’s Modem Pyrennes with 18,360M at 2-05 and Mowry’s Poker Popo-ET daughter. Sires they are using include Burdette and Rockstar pretty heavily Lori stated, and currently they are using Palmyra Berkely Reagan, Selwood Petitiion, Forever Schoon Predator, Blum Bottom Ryder and Deer Hill Buddy Francis. They also keep a clean-up bull that is a homebred Rockstar son. The Baumgardners are genomic testing all of their heifers. The only cow they have tested is Marie. “The numbers came back pretty much confirming what we already knew – she had type and lots of milk. We love genomic numbers, DHIA test day numbers, bull proof numbers, and the list goes on. You could say we’re numbers junkies. But, as much as we love numbers, they really don’t weigh heavy when it comes to making breeding decisions. Good old “cow sense” is what dictates those choices,” Lori stated. She went on, “Ayrshires have worked well in our herd along side the Holsteins and Jerseys. Our Ayrshires take no crap, they push up to the bunk just as aggressively as their herdmates.” Nathan says that more of his AI customers are asking his thoughts about the Ayrshire breed. He’s encouraged to see the production numbers rising, not only when reading bull proofs, but in the herd as well, BUT there’s still room for improvement. “Nate hopes that the farm’s recent change to feeding a TMR will result in more milk production, and so far it seems to be working; however, it’s too early to declare it a total success, since we’ve only been feeding TMR for a couple months,” said Lori. “Dan and Nate both agree that they’re not willing to sacrifice components in the drive to get better production.”

Dan sees a bright future for the Ayrshire cow, based on what he sees happening in the area. “At this year’s Pennsylvania Farm Show, there were more Ayrshire entries than any other breed. Interest in our Pennsylvania Ayrshire Spring Sale and Show continues to grow; in another year of low milk prices, our sale did well and our show has grown exponentially since its start 2 years ago. I am really encouraged to see so much interest and enthusiasm from our Ayrshire youth!” said Dan. “Driven by low milk prices, dairy farmers are looking to trim input costs, and grass-based dairying seems to be getting more attention. Ayrshires have a reputation as great grazers, and West Virginia University is putting a lot of effort into the Ayrshire/grazing connection. Feed efficiency, components, and good health traits are where the Ayrshire cow really shines.” Just as Lori and Dan purchased the farm from Dan’s parents, they are thinking and beginning to work through the transition to the next generation. “I guess you could say we’re in the process of transitioning to the next generation, although Dan isn’t ready to retire yet,” Lori said. “Right now, I wouldn’t want to sell the farm to Nathan and Rebekah. There’s no profit in the market, and as a parent, you feel like you’d be setting your kids up to fail. Since Nathan does quite a bit of work for us, and we can’t afford to pay him a wage, we’ve been transferring assets to him (cattle and machinery). Knowing that Rebekah hopes to do something with the retail end of dairying, we recently purchased a small tract of land that borders our farm and sits along the main road. Nathan and his brother Justin purchased a small herd of 18 Angus cows a few months ago, to add a little diversity around here. We have a small flock of brown egg laying hens that provide a small amount of extra income, but mostly provide enjoyment for Dan. Dan’s also been on the internet looking at all kinds of info about sheep. Rebekah wants to add some hogs to the mix---pretty soon we’ll be like Old McDonald’s Farm. E-I-E-I-OH!” Barrens View, like many dairies today, are looking towards the future, with some apprehension as well as vision and optimism. With utilizing the tools available to them, such as genomics, as well as diversifying, they will be providing excellent opportunities for themselves, as well as the next generation to succeed.

Ayrshire high cpi cow list for April 2018

The CPI formula = 25(PTAfat/SD fat) +35(PTA prot/SD prot) + 25(PTA type/SD type) + 6(PTA dpr/SD dpr) +5(PTA udder depth/SD udder depth) -4(PTA scc/SD scc) + 450 Where SD fat = 27; SD prot = 19; SD type = 1; SD dpr = 1.7; SD udder depth = 0.9 and SD scs = 0.23

The CPI formula is based upon six traits with the following emphasis: 25% fat, 35% protein, 25% type, 6% daughter pregnancy rate (DPR), 5% udder depth and 4% somatic cell. Milk yield is not included as a separate trait in the formula because it is highly correlated to protein and fat yields. The top 125 cows are listed below.
