hange is coming! The dairy industry is facing genetic base changes, as well as updates to the net merit index and the introduction of a grazing merit index with the release of the December 2014 genetic evaluations. There are many resources available to breeders to learn more about what is going on in the U.S. world of genetics. One of my favorites is the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding’s website at https://www.cdcb.us. I encourage you to browse through this website to learn more. In the meantime, the following information was published by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding to provide background on some of the new updates.

A genetic base change for U.S. dairy evaluations will be arriving in December 2014 H. Duane Norman, Paul M. VanRaden and João W. Dürr Rapid genetic improvement is being made in U.S. dairy cattle herds as a result of selection programs being supported by several dairy organizations and embraced by producers. Because of this, about every five years all genetic evaluations are published with an updated genetic base. This is simply an adjustment to the Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTA) of all animals to compensate for the genetic change (usually progress) that has been made across the last five-years. A base change provides a means of showing whether, and by how much, animals are superior or inferior to current contemporaries for each trait evaluated. This keeps PTAs from becoming extreme over time, which could otherwise cause users to lose sight that some of the genetics marketed would not provide them the improvement they should be receiving. With the new base, the average PTAs in each breed for sire-identified cows born in 2010 will be set to zero, except for the traits calving ease and stillbirth rate which will be set to the breed average and for somatic cell score, centered at 3.0. Within breeds, the PTAs for most traits decrease with a base change, then most animals’ evaluations remain fairly stable between the base changes except when the performance of daughters and other relatives added differ markedly from earlier ones. One exception is change is expected when the animal or its close relative obtains genomic test results. The magnitude and direction of the base change for each trait and breed reflects the progress that has been made in the last five years. For a given trait and breed, PTAs will be reduced by the amount listed in Table 1 (see table published online) when the genetic trend was positive, or be increased if the change was negative. The expected base changes for traits in the Net Merit indexes are shown. The actual genetic change over the last 5 years is twice that shown by the change that will be made in PTA. The US dairy herd continues to be more productive each year, thereby delivering quality nutrition to consumers at a low cost. The cows born in 2010 were before genomic selection had much impact, and trends are faster for calves born in the last 4 years. To make comparisons to the progress made in other countries, one would need to first place all units on a comparable basis. A more comprehensive description of the base change authored by VanRaden et al. (2014) is available now through https://www.cdcb.us/News/News.htm. Revisions to lifetime merit indexes will be incorporated in the December 2014 evaluations H. Duane Norman, Paul VanRaden, John Cole and João Dürr Genetic indexes are made available to breeders so that selection can be directed to several traits with economic importance simultaneously according to the value of each trait. These indexes have been assigned to national evaluations in the US since 1971. The weights suggested for use in lifetime merit indexes have been updated following an extensive review by Drs. John Cole and Paul VanRaden, considering input furnished by academic and industry personnel. Historically revisions are made to the lifetime merit indexes as production costs or income sources change across time or when evaluations for additional traits that should be incorporated into selection programs become available. Two additional fertility traits have been added into the new indexes that were not included in the 2010 versions. In addition to traditional net merit (NM$), cheese merit (CM$), and fluid merit (FM$) indexes that were designed for herds with differing milk markets, a 4th index called grazing merit (GM$) is being introduced for herds on pasture systems and for breeders demanding higher fertility due to seasonal calving requirements than other producers need. The 2010 merit indexes previously included daughter pregnancy rate (DPR) but the new revision will include heifer conception rate (HCR) and cow conception rate (CCR) also. Benefits of the new fertility traits beyond that already contributed by productive life (PL) and DPR should be more direct use of age at first calving and decreased costs to obtain pregnancies including reduced semen needs. The revised net merit index planned for December 2014 places more relative emphasis on milk component traits than before. Combined fat and protein yield will receive 42% now compared to 35% before. Less emphasis will now be given to somatic cell score, body size, and productive life. A more comprehensive description of the base change “Net Merit as a Measure of Lifetime Profit: 2014 Revision” authored by VanRaden and Cole (2014) is now available through https://www.cdcb. us/News/News.htm.

T

he Mid-Atlantic National Ayrshire Show was held Wednesday, September 17 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Judge Nathan Thomas of Cable, Ohio, placed the 130 head that paraded through the ring at the AllAmerican Dairy Show. After sorting through the heifer classes, Thomas tapped his first-place summer yearling, Paragon-Acres TSB Kinetic, owned by Adam Buckenmeyer of Alexander, New York, for Junior Champion honors. She is a Burdette June 2013 heifer out of an Excellent Mr America daughter. Thomas commented, “Her width of chest floor, overall size and scale are what places her over the winning fall calf that most closely follows her with similar qualities.” Reserve Junior Champion honors went to the fall calf winner, Old Bankston JC Random Bang-ET owned by Gene Iager and Craig Walton of Walkersville, Maryland. She is a daughter of the EX942E 2013 Unanimous All-American 100,000 Pound Cow, Steam-Valley Wilton Magic Bri. The second-place fall calf, West Meadow Dreamer’s Vyde, owned by Neil G Kittle and Jan Dingwall was tapped for Honorable Mention honors. Iager and Walton also exhibited the fancy Senior Two-Year-Old, Ski-Pal L G Kalina, that Thomas tapped for Intermediate Champion. A Brone-Ayr Loto Greg-ET daughter, she was the Supreme Champion of the 2014 Iowa State Fair. The Evans family of Georgetown, New York, exhibited the Reserve Intermediate Champion and first-place Junior TwoYear-Old, Sunny Acres CA Ginger. She is a Sunny-Acres Class Act daughter out of the 90-point Palmyra Ramius S. Ginger. Honorable Mention honors went to Sunny Acres Harmony’s Sugar, the first-place Senior Three-Year-Old also owned by the

Evans family. The Hills of Four Hill Farms, Bristol, Vermont, exhibited the cow tapped by Thomas for Senior Champion. RiverValley Poker BonJovi was the first-place Five-Year-Old Poker daughter that has 23,760M 1,046F 775P at 3-08 in 365D. Reserve Senior Champion honors went to the winning four-year-old, Garnet-Lane Avenger Poinsettia exhibited by Cassandra Plummer of Galena, Maryland. She is a 90-point Avenger daughter with records to 21,000M. Lone-Elm Modem Lady, the firstplace Aged Cow was named Honorable Mention for owner Daniel Hoppaugh of Columbia Cross Roads, Pennsylvania. She is a EX92-2E previous All-American nominee. But it was the youth that won the day as Thomas slapped the Intermediate Champion, Ski-Pal L G Kalina, for Grand of the Mid-Atlantic National Show. Thomas chose his Senior Champion, RiverValley Poker BonJovi, for Reserve Grand and gave the Honorable Mention nod to the Reserve Senior Champion, Garnet-Lane Avenger Poinsettia. Thomas thanked the breeders and exhibitors for the invitation to judge the show and announced how happy he was with the kind of cows he had out for Grand choices, commenting on “the quality, width and substance is just evident all the way through.” He finished, “My choice today for Grand is this Intermediate Champion with her beautiful mammary system, she’s got the advantage of being cleaner in the bone and through the hock over the strong, dairy five-year-old and aged cows.” The Evans family took home the banners for Premier Breeder and Exhibitor as well as winning all but one group class. SunnyAcres Final Premium was named the Total Performance winner for them with a record

ieux Village C. Daimond, EX93-CAN, captured the Grand Champion crown at the Eastern National Ayrshire show, held September 18th, 2014 and judged by Adam Liddle of Argyle, New York. Daimond, a five-yearold owned by Florent Foley of Piopolis, Quebec, swept the show by taking Best Udder and Best Bred and Owned as well as capturing Foley the title of Premier Breeder. Reserve Grand honors went to the secondplace five-year-old and Reserve Senior Champion, Ethier-Acres Calimero Quick, EX-92, exhibited by Blue Spruce Farm of Bridport, Vermont. Quick was most recently titled Reserve Grand of the Eastern National Junior Show in 2011. Judge Liddle showed early on that he wouldn’t count out second-place animals, as the Intermediate and Reserve Intermediate champions both came from the Junior-Three-Year-Old class. Hardy Farm Burdette Majestic, exhibited by Ryan Rida and Marjorie Hardy of South Woodstock, Vermont, the Intermediate Champion, went on to be named Honorable Mention Grand Champion of the show. In her class and for Reserve, she was followed by Blue-Spruce Baltimore 9822, VG-89, of Blue-Spruce Farm, Bridport, Vermont. For Junior Champion, Judge Liddle selected Kellcrest Astroid-ET, a fall yearling owned by Ridale Genetics and Henri Hofer of South Woodstock, Vermont. Astroid was nominated All-American in 2013. She was followed by Blue-Spruce Burdette 11697, owned by Blue-Spruce Farm. BlueSpruce’s huge success in the heifer show as well as exhibiting the Reserve Intermediate Champion earned them their title of Premier Exhibitor. Fittingly, the Total Performance Cow title went to the winner of the 100,000 Pound Cow class, Legacy-Lane Nolan

Blessed, EX-91, exhibited by Beverly J Donovan of Benton, Maine. Blessed’s best record to date is 3-11 305d 27,380M 6.4% 1754F 3.3% 905P.

he World Dairy Expo’s theme “Designer Dairy” certainly hit the spot with the quality of beautiful heifers and cows that graced the colored shavings during the International Ayrshire Show on Tuesday, September 30. Calling the shots for this show were Judge David Wallace of Beloit, Wisconsin, and Gary Bowers of Coaticook, Quebec, Canada. Exhibitors from across the U.S. and Canada paraded 245 head past the two judges to vie for the champion honors. The judges had their work cut out for them in heifer classes that ranged in size from 9 to 30 to find their winners and eventual junior champions. The top two from each class of the 130 heifers reentered the ring for consideration of Junior Champion after an exciting morning for Wallace and Bowers. “What a wonderful bunch of animals,” said Wallace as he began his reasons for Junior Champion of the show. “We appreciate the quality the exhibitors have presented today. We have five heifers brought out that we think will compete in their future cow classes. We love the rump structure on the winter yearling, this pair of summer yearlings are our most different pairing but quality in their own right, the winter calf was an easy winner in her class and the spring calf is stylish. These two summer yearlings are tremendous heifers, but the advantage today goes to the winter yearling who is cleaner in the head and neck, but we certainly don’t want to take anything away from the summer yearling who will be Reserve today.” Junior Champion honors went to Onword Moricus Ali-ET, the first-place Winter Yearling sired by Lagace MordicusET and owned and exhibited by Jonna B. Schutte of Oelwein, Iowa. The 2013

Reserve All-American Winter Calf is out of the 93-point multiple All-American and 2011 All-World Three-Year-Old, Onword Calimaro Addy-ET with records over 26,000M and 1,000F. The first-place Summer Yearling was tapped for Reserve Junior Champion. Des Prairies Peugeot, sired by Nexus Dreamer, is owned by Stephen McDonald of Princeton, Illinois. She is out of an award winning BB Kellogg EX92-3E Canadian dam. After placing the young cow classes, Wallace and Bowers pulled four out for the Intermediate Champion consideration. “We have four young cows here for contention of Intermediate Champion that we like,” Wallace said, “the junior two-year-old, the very dairy pair of senior twos and the senior three who has the best udder. We just love that center ligament and definition of udder on her. Because of that, she will be the Intermediate Champion followed by those senior two-year-olds. For me it’s easy to go with the senior two’s – they have tremendous dairy throughout and width through the pins.” Tapped for Intermediate Champion was Lone Birch D Wham Dallas, owned by Emily Paquette, Gabriel Glaisdell and Lone Birch Ayrshires of North Brookfield, Massachusetts. This 89-point winning Senior Three-Year-Old is sired by DoubleWhammy and is out of the firstplace Aged Cow at both the Eastern States and Central States shows in 2012. The Reserve Intermediate Champion is Vieux Village Balti Destinee, the first-place Senior Two-Year-Old owned by Vicky, Florent and Bianca Foley of Piopolis, Quebec, Canada. She is an 88-point (CAN) Baltimore daughter backed by two Excellent AllAmerican and All-Canadian nominated dams.

When it came time for the Senior Champion pick of the show, Wallace once again talked about his winners from each class before tapping the first-place FiveYear-Old, Vieux Village C. Daimond for Champion and the 100,000 pound winner, Sharwards Calimero Megan, for Reserve Senior Champion honors. The aged cow, Bar-Vue BBK Goldy-ET was named Honorable Mention. “These three cows give us tremendous balance, openness of rib and femininity,” Wallace exclaimed. “The five-year-old just has a better rump structure while the 100,000 pound cow is flatter boned and has more depth of rib than the aged cow today.” Vieux Village C. Daimond is a 93-point (CAN) Cedarvale Charleston All-Canadian 2011 Senior Two-Year-Old nominee. The Senior Champion is owned by Vicky, Florent and Bianca Foley and is out of a EX93-6E (CAN) BB Kellogg daughter. The Reserve Senior Champion and firstplace 100,000 pound cow is the EX94-2E multiple All-American Calimero daughter owned by the Megan Syndicate of Epworth, Iowa. Rounding out the choice for Senior Champion was the BB Kellogg daughter, Goldy, owned by the Kruses of Dyersville, Iowa. She is 91-points with multiple AllAmerican honors. The judges contemplated their choice for Grand and Reserve Grand of the show from their Senior, Intermediate and Junior Champions after all were brought back to the ring. Wallace then took to the mic thanking his supporters, his associate judge and his family before congratulating his Grand, Reserve and Honorable Mention of the International Ayrshire Show. “We have cows out here that we feel represent the Ayrshire breed and today this tremendous cow, the five-year-old, best represents the Ayrshire cow. She has strength, is correct and blends a beautiful udder into her body wall. Not taking anything away from the big white senior three, who exhibits more definition to the center ligament than that 100,000 pound cow today,” he said after congratulating Florent Foley, who led the winning five-year-old and Amy Woodis on the halter of the white Senior Three-Year-Old. His final handshake of the championship round was to Richard Thompson on the halter of the 100,000 pound cow. Premier Breeder and Exhibitor of the show was Florent Foley of Piopolis, Quebec, Canada. The Total Performance Cow and Nasco International Type and Production Award went to Hall’s Ruben Faith with 7-06 305D 29,135M 3.3%

National Dairy Shrine Honors David Gibson

ach year the National Dairy Shrine honors those who have been pioneers within the dairy industry. A true pioneer not only ventures to places unknown, they also leave their stamp on an industry and improve it for future generations. This year the National Dairy Shrine honored an individual with an extensive Ayrshire background who has done just that. The recipients are selected by an anonymous committee, and their portraits will be on display at the National Dairy Hall of Fame and Museum in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. David Gibson Jr. has a long and storied career in the dairy industry but is most recognized for his accomplishments as executive secretary for the American Ayrshire Association. Under his leadership, the breed became one of the first to recognize the importance of young sire sampling. Although not always popular, he had the courage to stand up and promote the importance of continual genetic progress. As a result, the young sire sampling program was a resounding success. Gibson also convinced the breeders to move away from herd bulls and join in the widespread trend of A.I. The growth of the Ayrshire breed during his tenure as executive secretary was, without a doubt, a result of his leadership and guidance. Born in Ayrshire County, Scotland, David’s friend and colleague Maurice Mix wrote in his letter of recommendation to the National Dairy Shrine that “David developed his boyhood interest in the dairy industry, especially with the Ayrshire breed, under the tutelage of his father, David Gibson, Sr., then the herdsman of the world famous Strathglass Farm Ayrshire herd of Port Chester, New York. David took particular interest, and eventually was assigned the responsibility of developing Strathglass young animals for major shows and sales. David became a premier cattle fitter and showman culminating in his showing the Grand Champion Ayrshire female at the World Dairy Expo. After serving in the military in World War II, David entered Cornell University in 1946 and majored in animal husbandry. He soon came under the attentive eye of Professor George Trineberger, the premier coach of winning collegiate dairy judging teams of that era. David was a member of Cornell’s very successful dairy cattle judging team in 1948. He later became a dairy industry leader by virtue of his innovative thinking and ability to develop and bring new concepts of animal breeding and breed promotion into fruition.” David Gibson became the Executive Secretary in 1957, following a “turbulent November/December 2014

and dissentious time within the Ayrshire Association,” said Mary Creek, owner of Palmyra Ayrshires of Hagerstown, Maryland. In her letter of endorsement she writes, “David Gibson constantly stressed the programs of the Association as being essential to the progress and development of the breed. He was the catalyst of the young sire program initiated by the Association to increase the number of young bulls being accurately sampled through the USDA system. He convinced breeders that the then-new idea of evaluating males and females based on herdmate comparisons was a far more accurate method to rate genetic progress. He also strongly encouraged more widespread use of artificial insemination and movement away from the herd bull mentality. He was, first and foremost, a promoter. During his tenure he encouraged the development of a staff position dedicated solely to promotion of the breed. With his guidance, Ayrshire sales grew rapidly and new buyers increased regularly. He encouraged state and local clubs to sponsor consignment sales as well as enable private treaty sales. During his time as Executive Secretary, when it was a much easier undertaking, he helped to facilitate the export of hundreds of Ayrshires to South America and Canada. He developed policies that benefited the Association directly when reciprocal transfers were required on all exported animals. He also embraced the idea of opening the previously “closed” herdbook of the Ayrshire Breeders Association. After 40 years of debate, in 1970 the registry officially allowed previously undocumented animals to be identified with the ABA after meeting several generations of qualifying criteria. This enabled more animals to be chartered and previously lost genetics to become part of a diminishing pool. He also encouraged the DHIR records program and introduced graduated fee schedules depending on herd size, frequency of program usage, young sire usage and timely applications. He recognized the need to have a timely breed publication and moved printing of the breed magazine, ‘The Ayrshire Digest’ in-house.” “The Ayrshire breed’s growth was at an all-time high under the personable leader’s guidance,” wrote John Meyer, Holstein Association USA CEO. “The Ayrshire Breeders Association struggled financially for a number of years prior to David Gibson, Jr. becoming executive secretary. Largely due to Gibson’s financial savvy, the ABA was able to burn their building mortgage in 1968, after 16 years. Under the visionary leadership of Gibson, the Ayrshire Breed became one of the first to recognize the importance of young sire sampling. Although it was not always popular with all

breeders, Gibson had the courage to stand up and promote the importance of young sire sampling. Optimism for the Ayrshire breed prevailed at the 1964 annual meeting due to the successful Ayrshire heifer program which Gibson developed. A total of 2,093 registered Ayrshire heifers were sold in 89 sales in 70 different locations during this time period. Of particular note is the fact that 73% of those who purchased heifers through the program were first-time Ayrshire buyers.” Another one of Gibson’s passions that is not to be overlooked was his devotion to the development of youth in the industry. He worked to establish a junior show at the national shows and initiated the Ayrshire Outstanding Youth Program that honored young men and women for their work within the breed. Meyer also wrote, “Not only was Dave Gibson a well-respected leader of Ayrshire breeders from 1960 through 1978, he was recognized as a gentleman and scholar by all leaders of the National Purebred Dairy Cattle Association. As one long-time breed executive said of Dave, ‘Dave was a great breed secretary; he was effective in leading the Ayrshire Association during their most significant growth period, and managed to do it without creating enemies with other breed associations and their leaders. Dave was an innovative leader and had the intestinal fortitude to carry out programs that were in the best interest of Ayrshire breeders and their Association.’” Creek notes that his industry commitments were also strong serving as a past president of the National Dairy Shrine and two terms as a director. He was also elected the first secretary of the newly formed World Ayrshire Federation and held Cont. on pg. 20 19

REWARDS is the right solution for breeders looking for convenience and cost-savings to enhance the value of their Registered Ayrshires.
