Director’s Remarks By Jessica Gatton-Dixon, Director Region 3 As my first term serving on the Board nears an end, I’m very appreciative and grateful for the opportunity I was given by being elected. Representing our breeders and having a direct impact on our future has truly been an honor as well as a responsibility that I have not taken lightly. It has certainly been a learning experience for me; and I feel that I’m not only a better Ayrshire breeder three years later, but also a better person. Thank you to everyone that had enough belief in me for your votes. I want to share a quote that sums it all up for me and I feel like we all need a little reminding of once and awhile: “Complaining about a problem without proposing a solution is called whining” – Teddy Roosevelt Too often it is easy to point fingers and identify difficult issues, but when it comes down to actually finding a solution or remedy, the results measure up short. The next time you find yourself unhappy with a situation, I would like everyone to ask themselves, “What have I done to make this better?” We need to all work together for a thriving future. With challenges in the dairy economy being ever present, it will take everyone to ensure that the value of the Ayrshire cow is not left behind. We all have something to offer, whether it be something as simple as ideas or time. I grow frustrated at times as well when it seems as though every idea is met with “No, that won’t work.” Building off each other’s ideas and turning a rough thought into something great can be done and should be our focus. I’ve heard many complain that attending meetings is too expensive and it’s hard to get away. Everyone shares those sentiments. Don’t forget that being a board member is not a paid position. We are all there on our own dollar and are devoting our time for the betterment of the breed. Don’t let your passion go to waste, get active and participate in our future!

By Tom Fenton, Vice President Hello Ayrshire World! The Board meetings in December were great as usual. We did pass a positive and realistic budget for 2016. The 2015 yearly review is not complete at this time, but it does appear that registrations and transfers are down some from the previous year, while the finances are still positive. We hope this trend does not continue; but if it does, no doubt, Ayrshires must face the music. So keep those registration applications coming and caught up. Please use ABA programs to achieve our goals. 2016 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for Ayrshires with the World Conference coming to the United States. Plans for this event promise a wonderful gathering. Great cows + great people = great fun. I hope to see everyone this summer and fall!

Organic Dairying with Ayrshires in New England
I
By Robin Alden with Marjorie Hardy, contributor
n the early 2000s,when milk prices were hitting rock bottom, small family farms across the country struggled to stay afloat. Many dairy farmers had to face the hardest decision of their lives: whether or not to quit the business that had been passed on through several generations. Times in New England were no different; however, many Ayrshire herds found a great alternative: organic. Around 15 years ago, Henry and Teresa Hardy were tasked with that same difficult question. They saw only three options: quit milking, expand the herd, or find a way to make their product more valuable. Due to the lack of land in their area of Maine, expansion was out of the question. When looking further into it, the Hardys realized that many of their existing practices aligned with organic standards. From there, the choice was easy. Organic dairy farming is an alternative to conventional dairy farming with a set of strict goal-based regulations that allow farmers to manage their own situations individually, while maintaining organic integrity and appealing to an alternative market. To be organic your entire herd has to be fed 100% organic feed, and your crops, pastures and hay are grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers, therefore making feed prices more costly. Management styles are sometimes different and more regulated. Calves are only fed the raw milk from your organic cow. The vitamins, minerals and supplements that you may feed, cleaning agents, and health care products have to be on the approved list for organic use, and antibiotics are strictly forbidden. Depending on the weather
conditions all animals have to have access to the outdoors, and animals over six months of age have to have pasture access during the growing season. The welfare of the animals is overseen, and certain procedures like tail docking are prohibited and procedures such as dehorning must be done to minimize the stress to the animal. Records are a key factor to a successful organic farm and must be kept sufficiently to verify the compliance with the standards, and be ready for organic inspection and auditing every year. Organic farming is not for everyone, and depending on your land, goals, or setup, it may not be an effective way for you to operate. With more restrictions and regulations to follow, it means being proactive rather than reactive. It requires a different kind of patience, persistence and willingness to try new things. Your ability to plan and have strict management of both the cows and employees is vital. Your pastures have to be managed and rotational grazing systems up to par. Managing and breeding for reproduction is incredibly important without having the ability to use synch programs or hormones. While flushing is possible, your results tend to be less admirable as it is typically done with the cows who are headed out the door, and buying animals is not an option, unless from another certified herd. It does cost a significant amount more to be organic but you are also being paid on a contracted base price to do so. You are then given the ability to plan long term and are able to make improvements to become more efficient. Many New England breeders will tell you that Ayrshires and organic farms are a perfect
match. Mary Castonguay of Castonguay Ayrshires in Livermore, Maine cites the breed’s hardiness and adaptability as essential to the organic way of raising cattle. She also loves their grazing ability, maternal instinct and superior health. Henry Hardy has similar things to say. He loves the excellent udders, low Somatic Cell Count and vigor of the Ayrshire breed. Dean Conant of Pineville Farm in Randolph Center, Vermont sums up what most Ayrshire breeders would tell you: “Ayrshires fit the profile. You need a cow that’s low-maintenance and trouble-free.” While switching to organic was a financial decision for most breeders, many have become passionate about the practice. The Castonguay herd is a member of the co-op Organic Valley, and Mary Castonguay has been a tireless promoter for the brand as well as organic dairying. Castonguay has assisted with tastings at grocery stores and the organic Common Grounds Fair, spoken at schools, and even travelled to Washington D.C. for the Organic Trade Association, visiting representatives to promote the importance of organic. To Castonguay, this “importance of organic” means giving consumers more options and allowing them to find what more and more are now looking for – GMO-free, antibiotic-free products – in one simple carton of certified organic milk. She also appreciates the benefit of increased prices for dairy producers. Pineville Farm, who supplies to Horizon Organic, promotes their milk in a local setting. Every year, they have a 4-H float in the Randolph Fourth of July Parade that incorporates elements of Horizon Organic.

Henry and Teresa Hardy are also advocates of organic dairying. Both are involved in several various committees to represent their practice – although Henry is a firm advocate in all dairies, and does not like conflict between conventional and organic farmers. The Hardys have also visited local schools and conducted farm tours to portray a positive image of organic farms and dairies in general. Due to their efforts in advocating for and teaching about organic dairying, the Hardys received Horizon Organic’s Producer Education Award and won a trip to Horizon’s annual producer awards. Henry speaks well of the organic lifestyle, stating, “Being organic means being proactive instead of reactive. It also takes some out-of-the-box thinking and willingness to try new things.” It’s hard to overlook the huge benefit of value-added milk as well. An increased milk price means an ability to improve facilities, which in turn increases production and results in a bigger milk check. In the last five years, the Hardys have made some significant changes, including converting their tie-stall barn into a parlor, putting in a motorized cow brush, and building a compost-bedded pack barn, just to name a few of the improvements organic has allowed them to make. Castonguay also speaks of the improvements to their facility, including the ability to purchase new equipment. The Castonguays were in the process of converting in the summer of 2002, when milk prices were reaching new lows. “If we hadn’t been in the transition to organic, we probably would have sold out,” says Mary Castonguay. Hardy echoes this sentiment, and adds: “We sign a contract for a minimum base price. We’re not riding the roller coaster they are on the conventional side.” Dean Conant also mentions the stable milk price as his top incentive for transitioning. Cow comfort and health is essential to organic dairying, and that’s where the Ayrshire emerges as the champion of the organic farm. Henry Hardy speaks of the ease in raising Ayrshire calves and heifers. Mary Castonguay says her expertise in raising calves has increased since switching to organic. “You have to be very attentive to small changes in a calf,” she said. “It’s made me a better manager of my calves.” A big question of organic farming is treatment of sick animals. The Castonguays have experimented with homeopathic treatments, and claim they work well as long as you catch the illness early. Says Hardy, “We have to train our employees to be able to pick up on early signs of illness as we can’t just give them something for a quick fix… There has to be a lot of preventative care and willing to keep immaculate records.” Conant claims the obstacles in treatment have actually improved his herd. Cows that relied
on antibiotic treatment or lutalyse to get bred quickly left the herd, and in turn, herd health has vastly improved. All three breeders cite the Ayrshire’s low SCC, hardiness and vigor as ways these concerns can be minimized. Indeed, the revenue from organic dairying can actually be extremely beneficial to cow care. The Hardys have won multiple awards for their excellence in dairying, but the one Henry seems most proud of is the Green Pasture Award. This award compares all dairies in Maine – conventional and organic – and judges them based on a multitude of categories, including production, involvement, and cow care. The Hardys won this due to their advancements that increased cow comfort and showed a “positive path for the future.” This is key to the Hardy’s success – “You wanna take care of your cows, and they’ll take care of you,” says Henry, whose herd has seen increased production as a result of infrastructure improvements. New England certainly seems to be the hotbed of organic dairying, but why? Ask any Ayrshire breeder in the area, and they’ll tell you the same thing – small family farms who were already extensively grazing due to the nature of the land needed a financially viable option to stay in business. Mary Castonguay also attributes the organic boom to a huge demand in New England, but also nationwide, and says the demand is actually larger than the supply, thus creating the huge value of the product. Lin Huntington of CR Farm in Vermont, a conventional Ayrshire herd, witnessed many of his peers converting during the milk price crisis. He also saw many of those who converted still fail to stay in business. However, he is full of praise for “good farmers” who were able to be successful due to their quality of cow care. Some of his neighbors he cites as being successful organic

herds include the Conants at Pineville Farm, the Spauldings of Good Oak Farm and Ted Hoyt. Dean Conant certainly fits this bill, as he has become an even more vigorous records keeper and shifted his breeding strategy to accommodate organic cattle. Some of the best improvements from his switch to organic, he says, are to himself, claiming he’s become “a better steward of the land.” He now focuses on a medium-sized cow with high components. Although switching to more functional type, as opposed to show ring type, has lowered his classification average, he sees huge improvements in longevity and quality of milk. The ease in transitioning is also a huge incentive to New England farmers, particularly those who raise the hardy, healthy Ayrshire. The Castonguays’ cropland was easily certified because they were already utilizing totally organic processes, and the cows were transitioned in a matter of months. Of course, it is more difficult now, and in Maine the minimums are a three-year transition time for crops and one year for cattle. Henry Hardy claims that most New England dairies were already grazing, as the hilly landscape and small acreage made it difficult to raise crops. The Conants were one of these dairies who were already grazing, and said that made the transition “easy.” Castonguay and Hardy both cite the price and availability of organic grain as one of the challenges of the switch. Castonguay was also very cautious about herd health, saying it was a “learning curve” on how to treat sick animals. However, this is less of an issue when raising Ayrshire cattle. The large numbers of organic dairies in New England mean an increased demand in organic replacement heifers and cows. It can be challenging finding certified organic animals to purchase, due to strict regulations. The Vermont Ayrshire Club listened to several requests for organic cattle and answered the demand by incorporating certified organic animals into their New England Fall Quality Sale. The sale has been certified organic for almost as long as they have had organic consignments, about 10 to 15 years. Randy Allen, a sale director and the manager of the sale cattle, lists the guidelines to having a certified organic sale: first, Tina Spaulding, an owner of the organic Good Oak Ayrshire Farm in Vermont, contacts the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) to let them know about the sale. NOFA asks questions to ensure that the sale meets standards. “We always tell them they’re more than welcome to come and see how they’re taken care of,” says Allen, but the phone call has been sufficient. Consignors donate organic feed and hay, and the organic animals are separated from the conventional Cont. on pg. 9

Queen’s Corner
Hello everyone! Spring is just around the corner as most of you are picking out this year’s show string. It is sad to think that this year will be my last as a Junior member. My best memories have come from the show barn and the show ring. The first time I actually showed at a national show was in Louisville six years ago; and to be completely honest, I was scared to death. I had never been in the ring with so many heifers before than when I was showing my March calf. To think now as I walk into the ring in Louisville, it being my last show as a junior member is a thought I don’t want to process quite yet. Those doors will be closing, but new ones are bound to open. I want to encourage you younger junior members to embrace every show and opportunity you get; because if they are anything like mine were, you are going to want to keep them forever. To conclude, I would like to remind all the Junior members of all the youth contest applications that are due. Convention is rolling around the corner and we Okies have been working hard to put on the best possible convention we can. I hope to see all of you down here this coming summer. As convention is coming up, I encourage all of you to be working hard on those projects. If anyone has any questions, please email me at leannev@okstate.edu. I’d be happy to help! I would also like to ask those wanting to support the Ayrshire youth to bring items for the Fun Auction. This is one of the few times we fundraise to keep the program going. Until next time, Leanne Van der Laan, Reigning National Ayrshire Queen

cattle so feed doesn’t mix. One of the other requirements is bedding – the sale uses shavings, but if they used straw, it would have to be organic straw. The key to the sale’s ability to be certified organic is the location. The sale is held at the Vermont state fairgrounds, which qualifies it as an exposition, meaning organic cattle can come and go without losing their certification. If the auction were held at a sale barn, the cows would automatically lose their organic status. In years past, as much as a quarter to a third of the consignments to the sale were certified organic. Certificates are held at the sale and provided to those who request them. According to Huntington, past president of the Vermont Ayrshire Club, about a third of the purchasers of organic cattle request this certificate. The organic qualification has also enabled the sale to introduce some other breeds, and Huntington notes that in particular more organic Jerseys have been added to the sale. According to Huntington, the addition of certified organic animals has drawn a few new buyers and also adds a little extra to the sale price of organic cattle. This is important, as the goal of the sale is to give small farmers a March/April 2016

good price on their quality cattle. “The sales are to provide a market for small farmers with just two to three head to sell,” explains Huntington. Otherwise, these animals would head to a sale barn, where they would achieve a minimum price, and any organic animals would lose certification. Allen says the sale has “definitely” drawn more buyers, partly due to the high quality of the group. Some of the organic consignments have even gone on to be named “Queen of the Sale,” a title voted on by sale attendees. The success of the organic animals in the
fall sale has encouraged the Vermont Ayrshire Club to incorporate them into their Vermont Spring Sale as well. This sale will be held on April 23 this year. According to Henry Hardy, organic certification has meant a huge demand on his young stock. He says their consignment to sales has gone down in recent years, as he is able to arrange private sales easily. On the opposite end, the Hardys don’t buy any cattle, and face little issue with lack of replacement heifers. While these New England breeders hold the tenants of organic dairying dear, they hold the Ayrshire breed even more dearly, and name her the key to their success as organic dairy farmers. “They may not give as much milk,” says Hardy, comparing them to his handful of Holsteins, “but the aggressiveness and the vigor are there, as well as the desire to eat pasture.” Both the Hardys and Castonguays hold their small milking herds (80 for the Castonguays and 50 for the Hardys) at around 90% Ayrshire because of their adaptability and efficiency in the organic lifestyle. Hardy believes that without a doubt, it’s been a successful venture for his herd. “Especially with the Ayrshires,” he says. “Our preferred breed is the Ayrshire.” 9
2016 Director candidates Cindy Crawford Whiting, VT Director Candidate Region 1 Cindy Crawford farms in Whiting, Vermont with her husband Kurt Anechiarico. The farm has been in Cindy’s family for over 60 years. Cindy’s parents, Bettelee and Robert, started the Scapeland herd in the early 1950s. The farm consists of 330 acres and they currently milk 50 cows. In 1997 Cindy and her brother Jim took over the reins when their parents retired. In 2011 Cindy’s husband began farming with her when Jim wanted to change careers. Kurt and Cindy have one daughter, Dacey, who is a freshman at the University of New Hampshire. In addition to farming, Kurt works for a local grain company as a dairy nutritionist. The farm had ventured into cheese making with some success and recognition. While they do not currently make cheese, they sell a large percentage of their Ayrshire milk to three local artisan cheese makers. The herd has had many excellent cows and has a herd average of 17, 750 lbs. of milk. The cows are grazed in the summer and fed mostly grass baleage in the winter. No corn silage is fed because the cheese makers prefer cows not be fed silage. Cindy graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from The University of Vermont. Her first job after graduation was field representative for the Ayrshire Breeders Association. In her travels she enjoyed meeting Ayrshire breeders and making lasting friendships. In 2001 she co-chaired the National Sale when the National Convention was held in Burlington, Vermont. She has served as a director in the Vermont State Ayrshire Club for many years. Scapeland Farm has supported many Ayrshire sales including the Vermont State Sale, the New England Quality Sale and National Sales. On the local level, Scapeland has leased and sold numerous 4-H projects to area youth. Through private sales many Scapeland Ayrshires have gone on to do well for their new owners in the show ring and the bulk tank. Showing Ayrshires has been a family activity since the farm started. Dacey is active in 4H, attending county fairs, state shows and national shows. Cindy has been involved with 4-H, child care and early education of at-risk children. She participates in many civic activities and has been a director on the local school board.
Susan Edwards West Grove, PA Director Candidate Region 1 Susan Edwards and her husband Bob reside in West Grove, Pennsylvania, on the family’s Timberlawn Farm. They have two children, Matthew and Melissa, both Penn State graduates. Melissa has a Master’s Degree in Animal Science and is an associate professor at Broome Community College in Binghamton, New York. She is married to Andrew Glenn and has two children, Ethan and Serena. Matthew, an electrical engineer, lives near the farm. The Ayrshire operation includes her mother, Ann L. Young, and brother Charles Young and family. The 150-acre farm includes 110 acres of tillable land that Susan oversees in crops. She and Bob purchased part of the farm in 1975; and in 1997, upon the death of her father, Nelson Young, she became an owner and trustee with her mother on the remainder. Susan shares the Timberlawn Farm prefix with her sister, Barbara Rudy, who lives in Indianola, Iowa. Her daughter, Jennifer, and husband, Wade Brunsman, Brone-Ayr Ayrshires, Dyersville, Iowa, help a great deal with Ayrshires purchased in the midwest. Susan’s loyalty to the Ayrshire breed is reflected in their family history. Her grandfather, George J. Laffey, purchased his first Ayrshires in 1930, with breeding from Penshurst Man O ‘War, and Strathglass, Neshaminy, Sycamore, and Masonic Homes Farm Ayrshires. His daughter, Ann Young, started to develop her herd from his breeding in the 1940s, and continued to improve her Ayrshires with national and international acquisitions. The purchase of Lippitt Roger in the 1960s produced some very successful cow families from line breeding. Fantastic udder conformity, longevity, and excellent milk production paid the bills for decades. A favorite champion owned and shown by Susan was Ardrossan Beau’s Nasturtium but her breeding never matched the production of the Roger daughters. In 1980, in addition to the farm, Susan started operating an insurance agency with a friend and remained licensed as an agent in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware for the next 25 years. She handled agricultural business and claims and served as a notary public. Susan has a lifetime membership with the ABA and has served on the promotion committee for the past two years. She has attended numerous national conventions and sales since 1970. She’s been a member of National Dairy Shrine since 1985. She
chaired committees for National Ayrshire Conventions in Pennsylvania in 1970, 1986 and 2005. As a lifelong member of the PA Ayrshire Association, Susan maintained an active role in the planning and operation of the National Convention and Sale in 2015 at Lake Raystown, Pennylsvania as the Finance Chairman. Susan served as a 4-H Leader for several clubs for 20 years and led several County Extension Committees overseeing the agricultural future of their county. She has served with several civic organizations including 20 years on the County United Way Board and as their president and 30 years with the Southern Chester County YMCA Board. Lynn Lee, Smyrna, TN Director Candidate Region 2 Lynn Lee of Smyrna, Tennessee, is a lifelong registered dairy cattle breeder with wide-ranging experience as a dairyman, auctioneer, classifier and show judge. Lynn and his family operate a 525-acre farm and have over the years bred numerous All-Americans and Reserve All-Americans bearing their Lee’s Dixieland prefix. In 2012, he and a partner formed Tradition Auction Services, LLC, a full-service auction company that is engaged in all aspects of dairy cattle sale management. Lynn has been involved with the ABA Board of Directors for 15 years, serving three terms as a director, one term as vice president and one term as president. He is the chair of the type committee and has served on numerous other committees. Outside of the ABA, he has served on local and state committees such as DHIA, Rutherford Farmers Coop. and the Rutherford County Farm Bureau. His judging assignments over the past several years have been prestigious, including national shows for many breeds at the World Dairy Expo at Madison, Wisconsin; All-American Dairy Show at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Massachusetts; Western National in Puyallup, Washington; and the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. He has also traveled to Australia, Colombia, Finland, Guatemala, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa to judge national shows in those countries. Jessica Peter Melrose, WI Director Candidate Region 2 Jess Peter is relatively new to the Ayrshire breed.

Despite her primarily Holstein background, she has always been infatuated with the Ayrshire cow and admired her from afar. When she and her partner, Garrett Schmidt, decided to invest into the Ayrshire breed it took them about a year to find the right animal to start their herd. In 2013 they purchased their first Ayrshire heifers. They currently have a small herd of Ayrshires they enjoy working with under the prefix Domynaire. The Ayrshires reside at Garrett’s home farm, Indies-View Holsteins in Melrose, Wisconsin. Peter comments, “It has been an exciting and awesome experience so far, meeting great people along the way.” In her professional life, Jess is a Sire Analyst at Accelerated Genetics working with the Holstein, Ayrshire, Brown Swiss and Milking Shorthorn breeds. Peter attended Iowa State University where she was a member of the Iowa State Collegiate Dairy Judging Team, part of the Iowa State Dairy Science Club Executive Team, and held many committee chairman positions. Jess has attended national conventions, showed at multiple national shows and enjoyed connecting with members to discuss their knowledge and passion for the breed. She is involved in both the Iowa Ayrshire Association and the Wisconsin Ayrshire Association and enjoys working and being a part of those associations. She is working with the Iowa Association on the 2017 National Convention to plan a fun and engaging event! Jessica Gatton-Dixon Conway, MO Director Candidate Region 3 Jessica Gatton’s parents, William and Veronica, bought their first Ayrshire in 1998, adding her to a milking herd of over 100 Holsteins on a TMR ration in Crane, Missouri. In 2000 Jessica participated nationally at Louisville for the Southern National. Since then she has enjoyed many successes in the show ring that have included several championships, All-American nominations, and her favorite honor - Premier Breeder of the Southern National in 2009 and 2011. In 2011 Gatton and her husband (Brett Dixon of Dix Lee Guernseys) began their adventure as Stil Dreamn Dairy, located in Southwest Missouri on a farm of 120 acres. Currently they milk 70 head with an average classification score of 88 points with a RHA of 16,000M 4.0% 636F 3.1% 489P, with the dominant breed being Ayshires and remaining evenly split between Guernseys and Holsteins. Their future plans are to get down to around 10 Holsteins. They have been in the process of setting up their pastures for March/April 2016
intensive grazing and are making progress each year with production off of them. They also supplement with corn silage in the winter as well as wrapped rye grass and sudex. During the 2012 drought (and with a child on the way) Brent took a full-time off-thefarm job. He has recently been able to cut back at the job and focus more on the farm, but daily farming chores are still primarily Jessica’s responsibility. With no hired help and a small child, Jessica’s life is very busy! Gatton-Dixon also helps the DHIA association once a month with testing the largest herd in Missouri. She had worked as a DHIA technician for almost five years before returning to farm full-time with her mother in 2007. Jessica has been an ABA national member since 1998 and active nationally since 2000. She was elected to the ABA Board of Directors in 2013 and has served on several committees during this time. In addition, she is currently the secretary for the Missouri Ayrshire Association. She previously served as the treasurer. Her responsibilities include the organizing of meetings, people and paperwork and providing a resource to members and non-members seeking Ayrshires, which has been a tremendous step in growing the breed and association. She is also assisting in the planning of the 2018 National Convention. Jessica has also been involved with the Missouri Holstein Association activities. Stil Dreamn Dairy provides Ayrshires for judging contests when asked and have allowed several FFA, 4-H and collegiate groups to practice with farm visits. Janet Jarratt Los Lunas, NM Director Candidate Region 3 Shady Dale Dairy, the farm of the Raymond Jarratt family, is located in central New Mexico, immediately adjacent to the Rio Grande, about 15 miles from the southern Rocky Mountains. Janet’s dad, Raymond, is the patriarch of not only the family, but of the farm operation as well. They are currently milking about 320 head of Ayrshires, and planning to increase herd size to about 350 cows in milk. They have a closed registered herd, and raise all of their own replacements as well as raising bull calves as beef steers. The Jarratts have herd bulls of their own that are used in addition to AI breeding. Being along the Rio Grande, they are fortunate to be able to irrigate and raise their own hay for the cows. They farm about 400 acres of both owned and leased property, growing forage and pasture. Janet and her sister work full time on the farm, with their brother helping with technical repair work as they update the barn and
equipment. Janet lives in the original farm house located about 100 feet from the cow corrals, so the dairy is the primary fixture of her life. She has a son and daughter, both in college, with her son starting graduate school next fall. Janet also has a small area where she grows fruit for sale to local markets for a slight supplemental income. The commercial dairy has provided the sole income for three generations. Janet remembers seeing the photographs of her dad showing Ayrshires shortly after WWII, and touring Iranian visitors on the farm in the 1950s. When she was little, the dinner table conversation was about genetics, finances, and the comparative value of the breeds of cattle. At that time the Jarratts had a herd of registered Holsteins and registered Ayrshires that were kept genetically intact. Over the years, the Ayrshires took over as the dominant breed, with only a few individuals that are not Ayrshire left. For estate purposes the animals were all transitioned to ownership by Shady Dale Farms, LLC rather than individual ownership. With Janet’s father’s long-time involvement with the Ayrshire Breeders Association, the family always discussed the issues that arose over the years, along with potential resolutions. Her parents attended many meetings, always coming home with a lot to say about what was going on. Janet has attended a few national meetings over the years, but has not been privileged to serve in any official capacity. In the early 1980s the Jarratt family showed an entire string at the New Mexico State Fair for a few years. It was definitely a learning experience, albeit a rewarding one. When her daughter was old enough for 4-H she wanted to show heifers. She began with two heifers, and over the years of 4-H and FFA, she showed at both the Valencia County Fair and the New Mexico State Fair in both youth and open divisions. She took complete show strings to the State Fair, where she did well. Janet was especially proud of her daughter earning numerous herdsman awards as she was her daughter’s only helper for 20 or so animals. Over the years, FFA dairy judging teams have come to the farm to participate in mock judging, giving the Jarratts an opportunity to discuss with them the attributes of the Ayrshire, and why they were their choice for a commercial herd. Each time Janet’s daughter showed at the State Fair, teams from across the state came to their cows to get a chance to view and learn about Ayrshires. In addition to the shows, Janet also took one of her daughter’s show cows to schools in the Albuquerque area as well as to parts of the state where no dairies exist. This allowed kids to actually touch and learn about dairy cows, and Ayrshires in particular. She also provides

calves for the county Farm and Livestock Bureau float each year, with the Ayrshires getting a lot of attention. Janet has been an involved leader in many of the agriculture organizations in her community and on state and national levels. She was the first woman elected President of the Valencia County Farm and Livestock Bureau. She has been a State Board member of New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau (NMFLB), serves on the Legislative Committee and was the first woman elected to the Executive Committee of NMFLB. She has served on the AFBF Dairy Commodities Committee and was selected as one of 12 members of the American Farm Bureau Federation Environmental Issues Advisory Committee. In addition she was the first woman Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District (MRGCD). The MRGCD is the irrigation delivery entity for 150 river miles in central New Mexico and the property owners within the district boundaries elect the Board. She has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Middle Rio Grande Endangered Species Collaborative Program (MRGESCP) and was the Non-Federal Co-Chair of the MRGESCP and chair of MRGESACP Water Acquisition and Management Subcommittee. Janet has also served on the Governor’s Eminent Domain Task Force and is a voting delegate for Dairy Farmers of America. What can we do as an Association to help breeders increase the profitability of their Ayrshires? Crawford - The ABA has always helped breeders increase the profitability of their Ayrshires by encouraging youth, keeping track of records and pedigrees, and promoting sales and shows. In 2016, through social media, we have the opportunity to reach out and connect with breeders from all over the world. If the association can keep the Ayrshire cow front and center, perhaps dairymen not familiar with Ayrshires will become interested. I believe the association should be fantastic promoters of the merits of Ayrshire cattle to the whole dairy community. In today’s world of social media and online magazines, it is possible to have vast exposure beyond the Ayrshire Digest. Stories can be shared on show champions, sales and meetings. We should be focused on the World Ayrshire Conference. What a great event to let everyone in the dairy business hear about all the great Ayrshires all around the world. We should be touting the prestigious American Cheese Society Awards that are consistently won by cheese makers who use Ayrshire milk. Why not market Ayrshires to cheese makers and other manufacturers? As we all know, there is “no better tasting” milk than Ayrshire milk. If we encourage demand for Ayrshire
milk, we encourage demand for Ayrshires. These things can all be accomplished through today’s vast social media networks. This probably could be done at little cost to the association. Perhaps some college internships or other avenues could be set up to help with this project. Edwards - Our ABA needs to continue the promotion of genomic education and the future of genetics as it relates to our Ayrshires. Milk markets and our banks make it difficult to drastically cull our animals as we study their traits, but we must pursue that goal. In this very stressful time for our dairy breeders, we can continue to communicate with our breeders that the longevity, productivity and feed expenses versus consumption should encourage them to see the profitability of their Ayrshires. Gatton-Dixon - Over my years involved with dairy I have experience with almost every breed and every type of operation. Personally, we have been through many ups and downs and are very much still a work in progress; but the one thing that has been consistent over the years and with the changes is the profitability of the Ayrshire! It doesn’t matter how you measure profitability, whether by income over feed, reproductive efficiency, longevity, health or ECM the Ayrshire ALWAYS comes out on top! After mom’s death in 2010, then drought in 2011-12 while my husband and I were trying to set up our own operation it was the Ayrshire that carried us through! I believe if it weren’t for the Ayrshire I would not even be in the dairy industry. I don’t believe that we need to increase the profitability, but rather just do a better job marketing it. Our cattle do not bring what they are worth at sales and increasing their value should be the focus not their profitability. Jarratt - Today’s dairy industry is facing tremendous challenges, and profitability is certainly a top tier concern. In looking at milk pricing formulas, components are important and provide an opportunity for Ayrshires to excel. There is a “sweet spot” where the higher components with slightly less production are more profitable than higher production alone because of the costs of hauling. I think the Association can promote the Ayrshire as a hardy breed with high components. The Association should work with breeders and AI organizations to move desirable traits toward components, strength, and longevity and away from the emphasis on stature. I believe that, if we don’t want Ayrshires to become a novelty breed, we must “move the needle” on desirable traits to those that affect the bottom line of commercial dairies. The profitability of Ayrshires bred for sale and those kept in a commercial herd must be closely related if we are to expand the breed. One of the most valuable characteristics of the Ayrshires is their vigor. This is invaluable in a commercial herd, particularly with the
weather challenges faced in my area in recent years. Our cows have thrived in drought, heat, cold, 40 degree temperature swings from day to night in dry lot corrals. Not having to cull cows that fail in these weather conditions, as well as cows that respond to treatment is an important component to success. Lee – These questions are tough, and there are always good ideas that come from them. After you’ve had the opportunity to serve on the board, you understand the constraints the Association faces from the challenges of our industry. We provide good programs and services, but we can’t make breeders use them. Each breeder has to step up and do their part individually. We’re all going to have to find ways to co-exist with others in this dairy climate to survive. Peter - I believe creating profitability as a breed hinges on marketing Ayrshires in a commercially viable way. Ayrshires have the qualities and attributes that makes them a profitable cow in a wide array of management systems from low input/grazing systems to free-stall environments and crossbreeding programs. The worst thing for the future of the breed is creating the illusion or perception that the Ayrshire breed is a “show breed.” Creating a higher demand and market for the Ayrshire cow will ultimately have a cascading effect of genetic demand ranging in live animals, embryo sales/export, more semen sales, and more sires going to A.I. With a higher awareness of the breed, Ayrshires will have their own ground to stand on. As a breed we need to change the conversation from how Ayrshires compare to Holsteins or Jerseys, to what the Ayrshire cow excels at! With the wide geographic distances between Ayrshire breeders, and more activities competing for family time at home, many are not participating in state and regional Ayrshire activities. What can we do as an Association to help bridge that gap and get people to become more engaged in the Association? Crawford - To have more people engaged in these activities I think it is vital to let young people and new breeders have an opportunity to become involved and have some ownership in their state and regional club. All organizations have the stalwarts who keep things going year after year and they are crucial to keep the clubs going. It is also important to bring in new people with fresh energy and ideas. Maybe we need to rethink regional and state activities. Times are changing. With Facebook and other social media a large number of people are already discussing and sharing information, stories and photos. Edwards - Change has always been a part of our history. My thinking goes toward the suggestion of a public forum; possibly in the

future “online” issues of the Ayrshire Digest to learn how to bridge the gap between breeders from different regions. Gatton-Dixon - One simple step to get more to participate in National Convention would be to stop hosting it during the same week as the Guernsey and Holstein conventions, even though it is up to individual states to schedule the event. It has been a consistent problem making members choose which they want to attend and I believe we should make more effort to avoid scheduling conflicts. Ultimately we must convey to our many passionate members that participation is vital for success. As I mentioned in my director comment’s this issue, simply complaining will not make as much of a difference as showing up, becoming involved and making sure your thoughts are heard! We all have to make that personal commitment to secure our future by prioritizing time for these activities which in the grand scheme can have so much impact! Keeping information updated and easily available and leading by example are key to the Association involving more people. Jarratt - The best way to reduce the challenge of distance is to increase the number and distribution of Ayrshire cows. Of course that means innovative and aggressive marketing. One of the opportunities that I believe could be expanded is the ABA website. The pedigree information on the site is exemplary; the “why Ayrshires” section could use updating, with updated information regarding the resilience and efficiency of the breed, including in grazing and commercial operations. Participation is a challenge for many organizations, and that has led to making distance participation an option. Exploring webinars and other online activities might be worth consideration. Another opportunity might be information placement at general dairy and cooperative annual meetings. There is an opportunity to demonstrate the profitability of Ayrshires because they are hardy and able to withstand highly variable conditions as well, including those associated with climate change. Increasing marketing in the south and west using the assets of Ayrshires to demonstrate profitability over time could provide an increase in numbers of Ayrshires in commercial herds. An example is a conversation I had at an AFBF dairy meeting with a farmer who had looked to improve his Holstein herd. He crossed some of his cows with Ayrshires and was amazed at how much more vigorous the calves were and how his loss rate decreased immediately. Lee – This is all about keeping things in perspective. Times change and the needs of people change. We can’t lose focus on serving the core membership that we’ve got. We’ve got to engage young people when they become involved in youth programs such as 4-H, with the goal that some of them will stay involved in their adult years. March/April 2016
Peter - With time being precious and lower milk prices making breeders stretch their dollar farther and farther, we as Ayrshire breeders need to focus on hosting quality events for breeders to attend. Examples of this would be putting on a sale that produces All-American nominations or high-indexing animals. Like anything, if someone has a success story from a sale, or purchase, they are more likely to go back to purchase from that sale or breeder again. We need to encourage and celebrate success of other breeders and Ayrshire enthusiasts. The same logic goes for hosting conventions, picnics, etc. Putting on quality events for breeders to attend will result in people wanting to attend the following year! What ideas do you have that would help identify new genetics to advance the Ayrshire breed? Crawford - The age old question - new genetics. It is a challenge in our small breed. We need to recognize all good Ayrshire records, whether or not they are on the REWARDS program. Genomic testing is another tool we should keep working with to identify superior genetics. I’d like to be optimistic and believe that we already have the genetics we need in our herd book to improve the breed and not look to other breeds for this. But what we really need is more Ayrshire cattle on more farms. Edwards - I should have studied harder in college sciences but my understanding of the question would be to collect more genetic criteria regarding metabolic problems, health traits info, faults in the build of the body in the daughters as to the transmitting abilities of our sires, etc. The prime way to identify new genetics seems to me to start a program to genetically test all of our Ayrshires. Gatton-Dixon - There are many cows out there that are classified excellent and have top milk production records all while being an outcross! I find it very frustrating that so many of these cows that could have an awesome impact on a national scale more often than not are overlooked by AI companies! Our AI companies must expand their fishing pond; we are all tired of seeing the same herds and crosses offered. Genomic testing may provide a resource to some, but it will not serve as well as the good old fashion way of using proven cows that have offspring and DHIA testing to back up the information! Self-promotion seems to be the only ready answer. I’m a firm believer in self-reliance and it certainly applies here. If the “people in charge” refuse to open their eyes to new avenues, we must take it in our own hands to make change. There are other breed organizations that select bulls from top cow families and contract them to AI companies. There is no reason ABA can’t do this as well. No one
knows what the breed needs more than those directly involved with it. Jarratt - I think we have to be careful of the absorption of the Ayrshire into the Red and White group. While I understand the temptation to cross breed, we have strived to maintain 100% Ayrshire bloodlines. This can be challenging as the genetics as identified today are limited. One reason is demand; the AI companies respond to demand, and they perceive the demand as being for show type or crossbreeds. If the Association can move demand to productive animals that may not have a show history, we can enlarge the genetic pool. Genomics is a possibility, but is currently expensive for whole herd application, and is somewhat limited in utility at this point, in part because a large pool of information is required to test predictive reliability. It does provide promise however for identifying under-recognized animals that can improve the breed. Lee – We have probably expanded our genetics more than we’ll ever know with the Ayrshire semen that has gone into grade and cross breeding herds. The problem with this scenario is that they’re benefitting from us as purebred breeders, but we’re not gaining anything back from them. We can and should continue to stress genomic testing on a worldwide basis. Peter - To identify and utilize new genetics, we as a breed need to embrace new technologies that are available. With the wide use of genomics in most breeds, the Ayrshire breed needs to utilize, promote and accept the technology. Having accurate genomic evaluations that can truly be used hinges on creating higher reliabilities, and the availability of the information. The breed needs to be proactive and take the initiative to educate and bring genomic information into the hands of the industry.

Get Your Nominations In For World Conference Sales
The U.S. Ayrshire Breeders’ Association is seeking nominations for consignments to the 2016 World Ayrshire Conference Embryo Sale. The sale will take place on Saturday, October 1st in the Wisconsin Dells as the finale of the World Ayrshire Federation business meetings. • Each member country is invited to consign four lots of embryo packages. The Sale Committee will confirm the final selections. • Embryos must be exportable. • The deadline to submit nominations to the ABA is May 1st, and embryos must be made at that time. • Each embryo must have at least 87% purebred Ayrshire genetics. • Early information on embryos consigned will begin appearing online at www.usayrshire.com June 1st and updates added as they become available. World Ayrshire Conference Chairman Steve McDonald of Princeton, Illinois, says, “This will be a great opportunity to showcase the world’s leading Ayrshire genetics. We’re excited about hosting this event and encourage all of our Ayrshire friends around the globe to participate.” In addition to the embryo sale, the World Ayrshire Event Sale will be held at the end of World Dairy Expo on Friday, October 7th at 2:00 p.m. This sale will be limited to a maximum of 20 live consignments, five embryo packages and three picks of flushes. All nominations for this sale must be made by August 1st to the ABA office or a member of the sale committee. The only exceptions will be draft animals. Only first and second place entries from the WDE show will be eligible for the draft. Please contact the ABA office with your nominations or questions.
World Conference Virtual Tour
Even though the Ayrshire World Conference attendees may not be visiting your farm, you have the opportunity to share your farm and herd with them. A virtual tour is being prepared that will be viewed on the bus as our guests travel across the eastern half of the US. The World Conference participants will also be given a copy of the tour to take home with them as a memento of their visit and to share with other Ayrshire breeders and enthusiasts. This will also provide a way to show the diverse types of farms and management systems in the US dairy industry. Each farm will have to opportunity to submit 15 photos and/or up to 3 minutes of video to showcase your farm, family, herd, outstanding animals, and market US genetics. The cost to participate in the tour is $150.00. The deadline to reserve your space is May 15. You can obtain an application with the information questions on the ABA website www. usayrshire.com or by contacting the ABA office. Don’t miss this chance to have the Ayrshire world virtually tour your farm and learn about your herd!
