enomics! A great tool for all dairy farms to be using and many are missing out if not being utilized. Some breeders are testing all their bull calves being born and make management decisions based on the results. My question is, why aren’t there more females being tested? Isn’t the goal of every breeder to improve the next generation? When you receive reliable information, you can make better mating decisions. Yes, management still plays an important role in the development of the animal and her production but do not ignore a tool proven to be more profitable. The more testing that is done and the more information and data that is collected, the more reliable the results become. Many of the proven cow families of the past are still very important and are showing great genomic results but there are new cows and cow families being discovered at the some time and this brings different genetics into the breed. Genomics is not only a way to improve your genetic base but also will improve the breed going forward. If you genomic test, before you register and use an 840 number at that time and then register the calf after the testing, you need to follow some steps to ensure your genomic results stay with the animal. One, use the same number for both genomic testing and registration. You may also enter the 840 number on the RFID line and receive a registration number from the Association. The registration number, and the 840 number being used on the RFID line will cross reference through Format 1 at CDCB. Please email or call the office to let someone know your animal has already been genomic tested if done before registration. We would like to thank Kathi Brown-Meier for the outstanding job she has done for the Brown Swiss Association. She has accepted a position with Sexing Technologies, and will be leaving in April. She will be greatly missed by the BSA staff and Brown Swiss breeders. We wish Kathi the best in her new venture and know she will always promote and have the Big Brown Cow in her heart. Until Next Month ~David

PRESIDENT Richard Sparrow, current District III Director is running for President of the Association. He and his wife, Renelle, and sons, Joe, Ben and Kirby, own and operate Fairdale Farm, LLC in Owenton, Kentucky. They milk approximately 50 head of Brown Swiss on 300 acres that is split evenly between pasture and cropland.

DISTRICT II Jeffrey Kennedy is currently serving his first term as Director for District II. He and his wife, Janice, own and operate Four Seasons Farm in Butler, Pennsylvania, along with sons Jordan and Justin and Justin’s wife Victoria. They have 400 acres that consists of pasture and 250 acres of cropland. They are milking 72 Brown Swiss with a few Holsteins and Jerseys for a total of 95 mature cows and 80 replacements on the farm. They have one full-time employee and two part-time teens that help on the farm. DISTRICT VIII Gary Overstreet is the current director of District VIII. He and his family operate the 3000-head Overstreet Dairy in Chillicothe, Texas. The dairy consists of 1,000 Brown Swiss and 2,000 Holsteins and crosses along with 700 acres that is made up of 300 acres of pasture and 400 acres of crops. The dairy employs a total of 34 people. Gary and his wife Glenda have three children and spouses Michael and Christine Overstreet, Steven and Valerie Overstreet and Rhonda and Dean Brown and eight grandchildren. DISTRICT IX Carol Regusci of Top diMark Brown Swiss in Modesto, California, has served one term as the District IX Director and returns to the ballot for another term. She and her husband John and three children, John Paul, Elisabeth and Elise, along with additional employees manage the 120head operation. The herd consists of 100 head of Brown Swiss with Holsteins and Red and White Holsteins making up the balance. They farm 650 acres of almonds, walnuts, alfalfa, corn, oats, pumpkins and beans.

Brown Swiss Bulletin

The BSCBA Board developed a series of questions for each candidate to respond to. Below are the questions and responses from each candidate. 1. As a board member, you will be required to make decisions (sometimes tough decisions) on behalf of other Brown Swiss breeders. What experiences, skills and strengths do you possess that will enable you to make decisions for the betterment of the breed? What will be your means of communication to the membership? Sparrow: Having worked 33 years as a manager in a milk cooperative, marketing milk to processors, helping members produce quality milk, and communicating with milk haulers, I have experience solving problems and making tough decisions. Additionally, serving on the Brown Swiss board the last four years has helped me become more familiar with many issues facing our association. I believe we need a section in the Bulletin and on the website notifying breeders of all board actions. Kennedy: I am a current Brown Swiss board member. I am a board member of the Western Pennsylvania Truck and Tractor Pullers Association and have served on my local FSA committee. That, and being a lifelong dairyman, has given me the ability to look at the facts and come to a logical solution. My phone number is listed in The Brown Swiss Bulletin and I answer or return all calls. Overstreet: I have 44 years in the dairy business with extensive experience growing children, A.I., doctoring and feeding cattle and growing crops. The phone and email are the best ways to communicate with me. Regusci: As a previous board member, I will use my past experience of being on the National Brown Swiss Board. I will take the skills and information I have learned from the past three years of my term to go forward the next three years. I have good listening skills and can make decisions quickly and confidently. I also try to listen to all opinions before making a decision. I will make an effort to report to the state boards in my district after meetings and solicit questions and concerns from them. I am open to emails, letters, and personal phone calls from members across the nation. 2. The use of genomic evaluations has become a reality. How important do you feel it is for Brown Swiss breeders to use this tool for genetic selection at the farm level? Sparrow: Genomic data should be used by breeders in mating decisions in order to increase the rate of genetic improvement. Kennedy: I believe genomics is a tool that could help advance the Brown Swiss breed. I think it is important in young sire selection and could be used in selecting replacement

heifers. I still feel that a proof and physically seeing animals are still best. Overstreet: It’s just one of the many tools that we have to improve the quality of our cows. Regusci: It is important to look at the genomics of the bulls to select those with the best milk production as this is essential for productivity of the Brown Swiss cow. With the limited amount of bulls we have, it is necessary to use genomics to sort out the traits we need to improve on. Other breeds have made monumental strides in their genetics by focusing on genomic testing and I feel that the Brown Swiss breed needs to follow their lead. The National Association should encourage more genomic testing of females at the farm level. 3. Besides Milk, Protein and Reproduction what is another performance trait the Brown Swiss breed needs to focus on in the next five years? Sparrow: Butterfat. In the fall of 2015, the dollar value of milk fat pounds accounted for two-thirds of the gross value on the average U.S. dairy farmer’s milk check. On high producing Brown Swiss herds this percentage was even higher. Kennedy: Moving into more modernized times, I think dairymen should focus on how well the Big Brown Cow adapts to new technologies. Overstreet: As the butterfat and protein price seems to be reversing, I think that we need to concentrate on this and on strength in the breed. Regusci: Reproduction is the most important trait we need focus on. I have seen this in my own herd as it can be difficult to get cows bred on the first, second, and sometimes even third cycle. It should be our #1 goal to improve Daughter Pregnancy Rate among our bulls. Breeders can utilize genomic testing to sort for high DPR bulls and those with other reproduction advantages.

4. With cull rates at 40-50% based on production, how would you encourage commercial dairies to incorporate Brown Swiss when longevity is not an issue?

and I view this as a positive for our association. This saves money on facility costs, staff, and supplies. Also I think it can be valuable to exchange ideas with other breeds.

Sparrow: The use of Brown Swiss genetics in a balanced cross-breeding program would increase milk fat pounds and, as I mentioned in question 3, this would increase profitability. Kennedy: Brown Swiss cows not only produce high volumes of milk, but also make milk with high percentages of fat and protein. In a solids-based market; this means more money in your pocket. Overstreet: Components and heat tolerance are two major factors to push. Regusci: I realize this is a major issue from talking with breeders across the nation. I would encourage commercial dairymen to first keep the lower producing first lactation cows in their herd as eventually with more calves their production will increase. The components that Brown Swiss have to offer make them more valuable in the milking herd on a long term basis, and once dairymen realize this they will keep them in their herds.

6. How would you encourage young dairymen/women to continue in the Brown Swiss industry?

5. What are your thoughts on combining minority breeds to process work from one location in an effort to reduce long-term costs? Sparrow: We have made progress in interbreed cooperation (combined classification as an example), and we need to continue to lead interbreed discussions to find more efficiencies. Kennedy: This makes economic sense, because the overhead costs would be split amongst breeds. Just as farmers strive to become more efficient, so should the breed associations. Overstreet: It could work under the proper leadership and management. Regusci: We are currently sharing the office with the American Milking Shorthorn Society

Sparrow: I believe the Brown Swiss breed offers a young dairy farmer many opportunities in the show ring, sale pavilion, and the milk parlor. Perseverance and passion are the most important characteristics for success. Kennedy: I would encourage young dairy farmers to continue in the Brown Swiss industry by promoting the breeds high milk volume, high components, and docile temperment. Overstreet: If hard work and good management is your way of life then dairying can be good for you and your family, especially for your children. Regusci: Young dairymen/women should continue in the Brown Swiss breed because of their unique qualities that set them apart from other breeds. I would encourage youth and young breeders to get involved with their state associations by helping with meetings and activities. Showing their cattle at fairs and shows promotes the breed to the general public and is another great way to get involved. Any other information you believe the membership should know about you: Kennedy: I am proud to be a fourth generation Brown Swiss breeder and the third generation to be at this farm in Butler, Pennsylvania.

2015 All-American Contest

By Robin Alden

The States: The 2015 All-American Brown Swiss honorees hail from 12 states and three Canadian provinces, from New Hampshire to British Columbia and Quebec to Texas! The state with the most All-American, Reserve and Honorable Mention honorees was Wisconsin, with 13 titles. New York was a close second with 11, and Ohio boasts 10. The two states with the most AllAmerican wins were New York and Ohio, with five each. Other heavily honored states include Indiana, with five honorees, and Minnesota, with four. It should come as no surprise that Elite Dairy of Copake, New York led the way with nine total honorees featured in this spread. Five of these were All-Americans, easily the most wins for any herd. There are also five honorees with the Cutting Edge prefix, bred by Elite Dairy. Blessing Farm of Fort Wayne, Indiana, had five winners, including one All-American and four Honorable Mentions. Four Honorable Mentions also wear the Blessing prefix. Random Luck of Darlington, Wisconsin also achieved four honors. Top Acres was a premier prefix to carry as well, with five honorees, including the All-American and Reserve All-American Junior Two-Year-Olds! The Sires Thirty-two individual sires were represented by All-American honorees. Mort Legacy Bonanza *TM racked up five total honorees, more than any other sire in the contest. However, Pit-Crew Wonder Tanbark ET *TM is the only bull with two AllAmerican daughters this year. Tanbark, as well as Old Mill WDE Supreme ET *TM, boasts four honored daughters. Top Acres C Wonderment ET *TM follows with three daughters achieving titles. Blessing breeding prevails again on the paternal side, as three represented sires carry this prefix (Agenda, Legacy and Braiden). Four more prefixes had two sires each: Cutting Edge (Austin and Thunder), Sunnyisle (Total and Trump), Top Acres (Premium and Wonderment) and Mort (Bonanza and Java). Notes There were no ties in this year’s contest. All of the classes were unanimously won except two: the Summer Yearling class and the Four-Year-Old class. Additionally, only one animal achieved All-American status without having placed first at World Dairy Expo: Pit-Crew Tanbark Koko, the All-American Summer Yearling. Judges for the contest included the judges of the seven national shows, as well as BSCBA-approved judges for the country’s largest state and regional shows that had results submitted to the BSCBA and Purebred Publishing.

The upcoming National Convention in Owatonna, MN will be fun filled for all whether you are exhibiting at the M&M Youth Classic or just attending. Activities are local attractions so we can run a bus from hotel to fairgrounds to gather all and return to check on heifers, have lunch and then continue with afternoon tour. Some activities will be out at the fairground so all will have a chance to participate. Watch for details.
