M

arch is here which hopefully means winter is almost over and everyone is thinking about spring. This year, March is the start of the spring sale season throughout the country. These sales give every breeder/owner of Brown Swiss an opportunity to add genetics to their herd or pick that “winner “ for the show ring. It is most important to tell other dairymen the potential income from buying Brown Swiss, as many Brown Swiss producers are still receiving near or over $20/cwt for their milk. Swiss milk is worth more! The following sales will have something for everyone (for dates and locations, see page 29 or visit the website):

- Iowa State Sale - Midwest Revue Sale - Kentucky National Sale - Breeder’s Touch Sale - Wisconsin Swisstacular

- Washington Spring Calf Sale - Springtime Show Window Sale - Mid-Atlantic Calf Sale - Colors of Kulp Sale - Minnesota National Sale

March is also important for anyone wanting to participate in the BSA/PTPR programs as March 31 is the deadline to enroll. These programs do not need to be paid in full to participate. There are payment options. You can make nine monthly payments starting in April; make two payments with the second due July 31, or pay in full now. Speaking with breeders, it has been said these programs save money especially when milk prices are low because it allows them to keep registration up to date, plus classify and still have their milk records recognized. March 31 is also the deadline for the Young Breeder Award. There are many young breeders who are missing the opportunity to be recognized for their hard work and dedication to the Brown Swiss breed. You can find the application on the Brown Swiss website or call the office and speak with Kathi or Alicia. Until Next Month ~David

Double W Dairy A Total Program By Robin Alden

M

arc Wailes of Double W Dairy in Holyoke, Colorado, may make the modest claim that there’s “nothing unique” about their operation, but if you ask anyone who’s purchased a Double W cow, they would disagree. Despite being a 1300cow dairy (550 Brown Swiss, the remainder Holstein), they are consistent contributors to the show ring, all the way from Stillwater, Oklahoma, to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Marc owns the dairy with brother Gregg and brother-in-law Glenn Huwa. Cows are milked in a double-14 parallel parlor and housed in freestalls. The facility is operating at maximum capacity, and Marc doesn’t think there’s any room for expansion. That doesn’t prevent them from setting different goals, though. They strive to improve each generation and have steadily increased their Brown Swiss numbers over the years, thanks to their longevity. “They stick around longer,” explains Marc, “especially compared with our Holsteins.” Like most family-owned dairies, each partner has their own responsibility on the farm. Marc manages fresh cows, heifers and sick or treated animals. Gregg is in charge of the remaining milking cows as well as the feeding. Glenn handles the equally important cropland aspect of the business and manages the irrigation. Janel, Marc’s wife, is the record-keeper and works with the veterinarian on their regular vet checks each Wednesday. In addition to family help, though, Double W also employs over 20 people, including a few part-time high schoolers. Marc emphasizes the “hands-on” management style he and his brothers try to maintain as owners. They are on the farm every day. Farming in Colorado does come with some adjustments, and in many ways, Double W is a sort of “in-between” operation. Marc estimates their dairy is medium-sized for Colorado, where dairies are typically quite large. The climate is also a hybrid between the Midwest and West. “We definitely have four seasons,” says Marc, but extreme cold doesn’t last much longer than a day or two. The climate can also be quite dry, hence the importance of irrigation systems. The biggest challenge is being set up for many kinds of weather, including winter blizzards and summer heat. Production is the first trait analyzed when making mating decisions at Double W, which is no surprise for a large dairy. However, type traits are still improved with each generation, and this is where the show ring success comes 6

into play. Marc maintains an extremely balanced breeding program, using promising show-type sires such as Richard, Brookings, Thunder and Cayenne Pepper, but also others such as Kannon, Dundee and Bush to maintain equilibrium. Young sire programs and sexed semen are also incorporated into the breeding program to maintain high standards. It’s not just a great breeding program that makes Double W so successful, though; they are also great marketers of cattle. They are frequent consignors of large groups to sales; typically milking or dry cows. Occasionally, they will sell a cow privately as well. Double W usually only attends the Southwest National, but by selling cows, their prefix is read over the loudspeaker at nearly every national show. Three Double W-bred cows stood out on the tanbark in 2015. CIE Double W Em Favor ‘E92’ was undoubtedly the most successful for owners Elite Dairy of New York. After placing first at the International, Southeast National and the New York State Fair and second and Reserve Grand Champion at the Eastern National, Favor was Nominated AllAmerican. Another success was Double W Pepp Clara ‘V87,’ who was named Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Southwest National, then went on to be the high-seller at the Harvest Royal Sale to R-John Holsteins, Tammy Voegeli and Allyn Paulson of Wisconsin. Double W Thunder Than ‘V86’ is a great young cow, still owned in partnership by Double W with Goldfawn Farm of Texas, and

was first Junior Two-Year-Old at the Southwest National. Marc likes his young Thunders (like Than), as well as his two-year-old Bush and Cadence daughters. However, when asked about the favorite cow at Double W, one cow immediately comes to his mind: Double W D Starlite ‘2E91,’ a successful Dynasty daughter that is now on a flush program. Starlite has a long show record at the Southwest National, including being the Total Performance Cow in 2013 and the first Senior Three-Year-Old in 2009. She exemplifies the breeding plan of balance, being a great milk cow as well with 6-05 3X 305D 30,810M 3.8% 1,165F 3.2% 985P. Starlite has three classified daughters: a ‘V88’ Franco, a ‘V87’ Wonderment and a ‘V87’ Joel who was second Junior Two-YearOld at the Southwest National in 2014. The Joel would also go on to be the third-high seller at the 2015 Harvest Royal Sale to Stanley Headge of Texas. Breeders will undoubtedly be able to find more of Starlite’s offspring at future sales! When it comes to marketing, Double W isn’t overly aggressive, but will consistently advertise in the Brown Swiss Bulletin. They also have an active Facebook page, where they have posted photos of their sale consign-

ments in the past. Besides consignment sales, they will also sell calves to 4-Hers, which are quite popular in the area, as they are possibly the last remaining Brown Swiss herd in Colorado. While Marc doesn’t see big changes in the future of Double W Dairy, they will continue to strive for improvement. In the past, Double W has been a consistent name in the business – in fact, the top seven high-selling cattle at the 2015 Harvest Royal Sale were Double W-

bred. By utilizing the BSA program, as well as young sire groups, Double W will surely continue being a great source for top-notch Brown Swiss genetics in years to come. Pictured are cattle being prepped for the Harvest Sale
