all is here and with that, one thinks of harvest and preparing for winter. Hopefully you also take the time to attend a fall Swiss sale near you. These annual sales always have something for everyone from adding milk to your bulk tank, to finding next year’s 4-H project. There are sales from mid-October through December and all will have quality consignments for your consideration. The most true statement to come from the auction box is, “you can sell a couple off the bottom and add a close-up or young fresh cow here today.” Even if not buying, promote these sales to fellow dairymen and let them know the value and profitability that come from milking Brown Swiss. Sell them on the advantages of the breed. Madison will be over as one reads this but there are still two national shows left with the Southwest in Stillwater and the show in Louisville in conjunction with the North American. The Southwest is the only self-supporting national show held each year. Although I have never attended, and hope to in the coming years, I have always heard the quality is really good and all are welcomed. Louisville has always had a really good show and has held their numbers throughout the years. As always, I hope everyone’s travel to and from the shows is safe. This is the time of year that Progressive Sires is taking nominations for the young sire program. The two released bulls for 2016 have been received very well with sales better than the last few years. Although there has been more emphasis put on production and genomic results, we are always looking for bulls from strong cow families. DPR, Productive Life, PPR, $Net Merit, Udder Composite, and plus on Fat and Protein are being looked at as the selections are made. It is important to have a balance of type and production and have a choice for everyone regardless of one’s breeding philosophy. We would like nominations to be one year old or older as it is important to have semen collected and released March 1. If interested, please send your bull’s information to the office before November 20 as the selection process takes place the first part of December. Progressive is a young sire program of Brown Swiss Enterprises for the purpose of making more young sires available to breeders and dairyman at a reasonable price.

Until next month,

David

tremendous second Northeast National Brown Swiss show was held on September 14th at the Big E in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Judge Joe Sparrow of Frankfort, Kentucky, made it an exciting, enthusiastic and energetic show that was enjoyable to watch. There were 91 head that went through the ring on show day of great quality all the way through the lineups. Elite Dairy had an exceptional day, coming out to the Big E Brown Swiss show for the first time and took home the Junior and Reserve Junior Champion titles along with Intermediate and Grand Champion. Ken Main’s grandson Michael Barton of Ancramdale, New York, exhibited Cutting Edge S Suri, the winning Summer Yearling and was congratulated with Junior Champion of the open and junior shows. Suri is a Streamline daughter of Cutting Edge P Sherry ‘EX92’ who is a five time All-American honoree while winning Junior Champion at the International show in 2012. The heifer who got the Reserve Junio Champion nod was Cutting Edge CP Tess ETV for Ken Main and Peter Vail of Copake, New York. The Chilli Pepper daughter was the winning fall calf from Cutting Edge L Taffy ‘2E93’, a two-time All-American honoree from none other than the well known Dublin-Hills Treats ’2E94’ who has a long list of show winnings, including being six All8

American designations. When it came time to select the Intermediate Champions, Judge Sparrow had a wonderful group of beautiful uddered young cows to choose from. The Reserve Intermediate Champion cow, bred and owned by Brooke Clark of Cornish Flat, New Hampshire, was GMC T Skygirl. This Junior Three-YearOld, with an impressive high and wide rear udder is a Titanium daughter that is scored ‘VG85.’ This lovely young cow, who Judge Sparrow hopes to see at World Dairy Expo, is the granddaughter of Blessing PR Shirlan ‘3E93’ with records to 31,740M and was the National Total Performance Winner in 2000. Being selected for Intermediate and then later Grand Champion was the Senior Three-YearOld with lots of style, length of frame and a beautiful mammary system, Groves-Sun Total Tartan ET ‘VG88.’ Tartan is the granddaughter of Timberline Jetway Toni ‘3E94’ who is a five-time All-American honoree, and owned by Ken Main and Peter Vail. The Senior Champion of the show was a well deserving seven-year-old cow who won the aged cow class, IE Maple Sugar Martha ‘EX90’. Owned by Chelsea Young of Tinmouth, Vermont, Martha was Grand Champion at Vermont State Show in 2014 and was also Grand Champion of the Northeast National Junior Show on Wednesday. While Martha is not a large cow she exemplifies Brown Swiss Bulletin

dairy strength and has a beautiful mammary system to go along with it. Being selected for Reserve Senior Champion was Kelly-View Boston Jet Silvr who was scored ‘VG86’ at 3-04. The Boston daughter was the winning Four-Year-Old for Signature Swiss of Hadley, Massachusetts. Spring Heifer Calves (5) 1. he Eastern National Show was held September 21 and 22 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Callum McKinven of Canton De Hatley, Quebec, Canada served as the official judge for the 143 head shown over the two days. After placing 97 head on Wednesday, Judge McKinven narrowed down his Junior Champion choices to the first-place Fall Calf, first and second-place Winter Yearlings and the first-place Fall Yearling. “I love the balance, frames and structure of these animals. Their style and femininity light me up,” said the judge. “But it comes down to sheer correctness on this beautiful Winter Yearling for me following her with the close reserve, the Fall Yearling,” he said. North Lanes Braid Present ET took home the Junior Champion banner for owners Leslie and Linda Bruchey of Westminster, Maryland. She is a Braiden backed by two Excellent dams. Jeff McKissick of New Castle, Pennsylvania, had the Reserve Junior Champion with Dochaven Braiden Desiree, another Braiden daughter out of a Bonanza from an 88-point granddam. Miranda Joins BSCBA Staff

Hello Brown Swiss Enthusiasts, I would like to introduce myself, my name is Stephanie Miranda and I am the new Superintendent of Records for the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association. I grew up on a registered Holstein dairy on the lush Oregon coast with my parents Nick and Myrna Steiner and my younger sister,

Melanie. One of my first show cows was a Brown Swiss, Wiser Lake Stretchy Sal, a heifer that I purchased in our local PDCA sale. She went on to be a 91-point cow. I was very involved in 4-H, FFA and breed associations. Upon high school graduation I worked on a dairy in France for six months, attended LinnBenton Community College and went on to graduate from Washington State University. After college I traveled doing classification clipping and working sales. During that time I was in Hilmar, California, and I met my husband, Mark Miranda. A couple of years into our marriage we moved back to Oregon and became partners with my parents, and eventually purchased the family farm, PremiumFarms. Mark and I milked 150 registered Holsteins with a couple Brown Swiss. My sister and I formed the prefix Sister Swiss. During that time I was a high school Ag Science teacher

and FFA Advisor for eight years. I then was an ET Tech for Evergreen Reproductive Services for 10 years. We continued to show at the local, state and national levels. Our pride and joy is Marks Ally Durham Africa ET, 95-points. She is housed and owned with MeDo Meadows in Orfordville, Wisconsin. In 2011, Mark and I downsized our herd and relocated to Juda, Wisconsin. In 2014, Mark and I downsized again and relocated to Janesville, Wisconsin. Currently, we have a handful of registered Holsteins on our 40acre farm. For the past two years I have been the Office Manager at the Green County Fairgrounds. My husband is employed at Larson Acres in Evansville. I am very excited to have this opportunity to work with the BSCBA staff and I am looking forward to meeting the members.

Junior Spotlight As Ambassadors, Christy and I would like to highlight Brown Swiss youth from across the nation. This month we are starting in my home state with the Pacheco family of Kerman, California, parents Brian and Alena and their children Anthony, Danielle, and Matthew. Enjoy reading about their Brown Swiss career and look for more articles showcasing youth in the coming months! -Elise Regusci, National Youth Ambassador 2016-2017 elise.regusci@gmail.com 1. Introduce yourself. Tell about where you are from, your family, and farm name. We live in Kerman, California, in the Central San Joaquin Valley near Fresno. Our dad is a fourth generation dairyman so that makes us the fifth generation in our family to have cows. We have been showing animals since we were old enough to show in 4-H. Pacheco Dairy Inc. is run by our dad and grandparents. We milk 1,400 Holsteins and 50 purebred Brown Swiss. Our farm is 1,000 acres and grows corn silage, wheat, alfalfa, grapes and almonds. 2. What are your chores and responsibilities on the farm or with your cattle? We do not have any specific jobs, but we fill in where ever our dad needs us. Anthony spends a lot of time with our grandfather, Jerry, in the fields growing the crops on our farm. Danielle is in the office helping our dad with the paperwork. Matthew is always with the show string and helping our employees with the calves. 3. How did you get started in the Brown Swiss breed? When we were very young our family went to the California State Fair. That was one of the last years that Ken Melville sponsored the Golden Bear All Breed Dairy Sale. Our first three Brown Swiss were bought at that sale. 4. What are your school and extracurricular activities? How can you advocate dairy farming during these activities and to your peers? We have all been involved in 4H, FFA and basketball. There are not a lot of dairies in the Fresno area any more, so our cows and especially the Swiss cows are a bit of a novelty. We let people take pictures with our animals and pet them. We have also helped our dad when he has given many guided tours of our dairy. 5. How would you explain Brown Swiss dairy cattle to someone who has no understanding of them? Many people are drawn to our animals at the local fairs that we attend because Brown Swiss are not very common on the west coast. We tell

people they are one of the six breeds of dairy cattle. They don’t give as much milk as a Holstein but they are widely known for Swiss cheese. 6. What is the wackiest name you ever used to name a cow? We named one Big Brown after the famous race horse. 7. One word you would use to describe Brown Swiss? Friendly. 8. What local, state, or national Brown Swiss contests have you competed in? We have shown our Brown Swiss at the Big Fresno Fair, the California State Fair (which is also the location of the Western National Brown Swiss show) and the World Dairy Expo. 9. Favorite memory from a show? Favorite memory was being in the Parade of Champions at last year’s Western National Brown Swiss in Sacramento. The colored shirts and Swiss music are always a highlight of the Western National show. 10. Future plans? Anthony is a freshman at UCLA majoring in business/economics. Danielle is a senior at Kerman High where she is ranked number one in her class. She hopes to one day enter vet school after getting an undergraduate degree. Matthew is in the eighth grade at Kerman Middle School and is excited to wear an FFA blue coat next year.

Kennedys Receive Obie Snider Award

James and Rita Kennedy of Valencia, Pennsylvania, received the Obie Snider Award at the 53rd All-American Dairy Show, September 18 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg. The award, established in memory of Obie Snider of Bedford County, a founding father of the All-American Dairy Show, recognizes an individual who places significant value in service to the industry and community, and displays high standards of conduct. “Jim and Rita have lived a life of service, especially to the agricultural industry on the local, state and national levels,” said Agriculture Secretary Russell C. Redding. “Their commitment to the dairy industry and the All-American Dairy Show is parallel with the goals and vision set by the namesake of this award – Obie Snider.” Together, the Kennedys operated Four Seasons Farm in Butler County where they raised their five children – Jeffrey, Jill, Janelle, John and Jason – milked Brown Swiss cows, and row-cropped 700 acres. Jeffrey, his wife Janice and son Jordan now manage the home farm; Janelle and husband Ted Callen also operate a dairy in Butler County; and Jason and wife Jessica dairy in Crawford County. John and wife Valarie manage Four Seasons Game Farm and raise beef cattle, hogs and sheep. Jill serves as the payroll accountant at a local high school. Jim and Rita also have 16 grandchildren and

their first great-grandchild is on the way. The husband and wife team have both served the National Brown Swiss Cattle Association, National Dairy Shrine, Pennsylvania Grange and Farm Bureau, Farm Credit, Farmers Cooperative Market of East Liberty, Butler County Extension and 4-H, Butler County dairy promotion, and are members of the Mars Presbyterian Church. A pioneer for women in agriculture, Rita has served on many local, state and national dairy organizations. For 24 years, she has been on the Pennsylvania Dairy and Allied Industries Association board, serving as president of the All-American Dairy Show for 10 of those years, and is a member of the All-American Dairy Foundation. She has dedicated nearly 30 years to dairy promotion organizations including American Dairy Association and Dairy Council Mid-East, the Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program, and the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board, along with the Pennsylvania Dairy Princess and Promotion Services. She is also a member of the Pennsylvania Dairyman’s Association and Friends of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Foundation. In 2001, Rita was named the All-American Dairy Show Image Award winner and Pennsylvania Dairywoman of the Year, and the World Dairy Expo Dairywoman of the Year in 2002. Jim was a Butler County Commissioner for 15 years, and was committed to protecting, pre-

serving and improving the county’s agriculture industry, in addition to promoting agriculture statewide as part of the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania. He also served as a local school board director for 17 years. On the state level, Jim was a charter member and held leadership positions in the Pennsylvania Dairy Task Force, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Center for Dairy Excellence, and the Dairy Policy Action Coalition, or DPAC. He also served as the state agriculture department’s regional director for 32 counties in western Pennsylvania for two years. The Kennedys join a group of outstanding recipients who share Snider’s visionary leadership for a stronger dairy industry.
