hile many are united in friendship because of the Brown Swiss breed, a select few are able to find their family in the brown cow. That’s the story of Glenn and Jean Laird of Everson, Washington. Both Glenn and Jean grew up on dairies with Brown Swiss, and frequently competed against each other at local fairs. Glenn farmed in the 80s and 90s with Holsteins and Brown Swiss, while Jean departed the industry. They were re-acquainted through the 4-H program years later, when Jean’s children leased a Brown Swiss calf. After some persistency on Glenn’s side, they were married, and have now been together for 15 years. Together, they have nine children and seven grandchildren. The Lairds began farming together in 2009. Previously, they had kept their cows at various different herds. They steered their kids towards exhibiting Brown Swiss in 4-H – and with so many kids, “before we knew it we had 20 head of Swiss milking in another herd!” They then made the decision to farm on their own. Their love for the Brown Swiss is evident – “No other breed can touch ‘em,” says Jean. Currently, they milk 45-50 registered Brown Swiss in their double-8 parlor. The Lairds have begun passing their love along to their grandkids, two of which are now in 4-H and showing Brown Swiss. Glenn and Jean view the dairy as “selfsustaining.” While the dairy supports itself, their livelihood is supported by their livestock hauling company, Lairds Livestock Hauling, Inc., which covers the state of Washington with four truck and trailer sets. “The dairy is for the love of the breed and love of the dairy farming way of life,” says Jean. The Lairds focus on type, milk and breed improvement when mating their cows. Additionally, they strive to maintain breed characteristics, which Jean summarizes as “Strong, durable, productive cows with longevity [that are] beautiful to look at!” They work together on all mating selections and use primarily AI bulls from Select Sires and New Generations. Some of their current favorites are Seaman, Tequila, Hawk, Braiden, Winning Formula, Double Dare, Magic, GPS, Richard and Twi6

light. They also run a bull with their heifers in the summer. The Lairds’ focus on milk production has garnered them recognition within Washington. Their herd was the top DHIA-tested Brown Swiss production herd in Washington in 2014, with an average of 21,934 ECM in 305 days of 2x daily milking. Their herd health is also held to a high standard, as they held the title of second-lowest somatic cell count of Washington herds with under 100 milking cows. The milk is sold to the Northwest Dairy Association, also known as Darigold. The Lairds’ focus on type results in an impressive classification average of 87 points. Currently, they have eight Excellent cows, the best being ‘4E92.’ Another reason the Lairds focus on type is their passion for exhibiting their cattle all over the state of Washington. They enjoy attending the Northwest Washington Fair, Monroe Evergreen State Fair, Puyallup, and various 4-H and local shows. Jean and Glenn both raised their kids in a 4-H and FFA-positive environment. Beyond their children and grandchildren, they also lease several animals each show season to 4-H and FFA youth. Jean has been a 4-H dairy leader since 1998. Glenn has always been an avid exhibitor of Brown Swiss and the Lairds believe it is a very good way for their children and grandchildren to make lasting friendships – just take them, for example! The farm is truly a family affair. Many of their children still balance helping on the farm with “living their own lives.” Two of their daughters, Allison and Rashelle and son Glen Jr. are what Jean calls “fair buddies” and help out with the show string. Another “fair buddy” is Jean’s older sister, Maryanne Wood, who lives in West Seattle. Maryanne often comes and helps out with the farm when she needs a “farming fix.” Glenn is also very knowledgeable with veterinary work, which is great for herd health and saves money. Additionally, Glenn does the outside chores, feeding, manure management and breeding. Jean keeps the books along with doing all of the milking and calf care. Friends help out in times of need (including need of a vacation). Other family members, including Jean’s siblings and moth-

er and Glenn’s parents are also very passionate about Brown Swiss and enjoy helping at fairs. Farming in the Northwest presents many challenges to the Lairds. Jean cites the wet climate as one of the biggest trials they face. The climate prohibits any style of open-air shelter. The high population of the area also makes land worth a “premium price.” This prevents them from farming their own crops – the Lairds purchase 100% of their feed. Despite these challenges, the Lairds have built a successful operation based on their beloved Brown Swiss. The family is very supportive of the Washington Brown Swiss Association, where Jean has served as Secretary since 2008. Glenn is also a past Regional Director. In addition, the Lairds enjoy working with BSCBA, and have recently begun using the genomic testing program. They agree that genomic testing is a good tool, but hope to see proven bull methods persisting in the future. They also both feel strongly about purebred Brown Swiss and do not like to utilize crossbreeding. A love for the big brown cow brought Glenn and Jean together, and the quality of Brown Swiss has kept their operation alive and well despite the challenges of dairying. The Laird family is a great illustration of what Brown Swiss can do! Brown Swiss Bulletin

he Southeast National Brown Swiss Show was held on Tuesday, November 11 in Louisville, Kentucky. Gerrit DeBruin of Lake Mills, Wisconsin, served as the official judge. After judging the heifer classes, Judge DeBruin narrowed his choice for Junior Champion down to his first-place Summer Yearling, Spring Yearling and Fall Calf. “This Summer Yearling overpowers everything out here,” said DeBruin. “She’s a jump-out Junior Champion for me. Then that Spring Yearling has the advantage over our Fall Calf for Reserve Junior Champion with more style and breed character about the head.” Pit Crew Tanbark Koko was named Junior Champion of the show for owners Pit Crew Genetics of Cambridge, Minnesota. She is a Tanbark out of a ‘VG88’ Zeus backed by a 90-point granddam. Sun-Made HP WNDT Tobie-ET, exhibited by Fairdale Farm LLC of Owenton, Kentucky, was tapped for Reserve Junior Champion. Sired by Wonderment from a 91-point Supreme daughter of Tonis Tessa, she was purchased by the Sparrows in the National Convention Sale in Pennsylvania. Hylight Tanbark Prefection was named Honorable Mention Junior Champion for owners Elite Dairy of Copake, New York. She is another Tanbark daughter that is out of the Random Luck KB Phoebe ‘2E93’ family. DeBruin declared it an easy choice when it came to naming his Intermediate Champions. Cutting Edge T Delilah, the first-place Senior Two-Year-Old and Intermediate Champion from Madison and Eastern National was tapped for champion honors. “She has the best udder so far that I’ve seen,” said DeBruin. She is a ‘VG89’ All-American nominated Cutting Edge Thunder daughter out of a ‘2E92’ Agenda. DeBruin followed her with the Senior Three-Year-Old winner for Reserve Intermediate Champion. “She is the most similar to that Senior Two in width and openness of rib,” he said. Cutting Edge Stratus Sue is an

Excellent Honorable Mention All-American with over 20,000M. Elite Dairy swept the Intermediate Championships with Bittersweet Victor Roxanne ET ‘VG89’ the first-place Junior Three who was named Honorable Mention Intermediate Champion. A pair of Aged Cows took home the Senior and Grand Champion honors for Elite Dairy and Pit Crew Genetics respectively. Grand and Senior Champion of the show, Eloc Wagor Kandid was a two-time winning Aged Cow with her previous win at the International Show earlier in the season. The ‘2E94’ 2014 All-American Aged Cow is sired by Hannys Swiss Ace Wagor and out of a dam with milk records over 117,000M. Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion was multiple All-American winner, Old Mill RL Wonder Sizzle, a ‘2E92’ Wonderment daughter of the ‘5E94’ Snickerdoodle. “Champions today are the pair of Aged Cows that were so close in class. They are a wonderful representation of the breed,” said DeBruin. Total Performance Cow and Nasco International Type and Production Award winner was the first-place Five-Year-Old Jonlee Secret Langwathby ‘EX91’ owned by Dalton Freeman of Bremen, Indiana. She made 4-00 300D 3X 40,820M 2,080F 1,444P with a 50,681 ECM. She was also the Total Performance winner at Madison. Premier Breeder and Exhibitor of the show was Elite Dairy, Copake, New York.
