The Exec Report

There is one thing that is constant in life, and that is change. Whether personal or professional, life is always changing. Are you embracing it or letting it hold you back? How one handles change can be the difference between a great opportunity and utter chaos. The Milking Shorthorn breed is going through many changes, and we are taking every opportunity we can to make progress and advance the Red, White and Roan. One of the most exciting projects currently in the works is the development of a new true type model cow painting. Breeders from all breeds have recognized the significant advancements the breed has made in the last 10-15 years in the show-ring and bulk tank while maintaining their longevity, making them a truly profitable cow. So, it is time to show off where the breed has come. The Board, Type Committee and AMSS Office are excited to unveil this project and use this new model cow to represent the breed. There have been many changes at the office in 2013 – starting with David Kendall resigning and the opportunity I was given to take over leading the breed this Spring. As of July 1, I have been working from my home office in Minnesota. The phone and fax numbers will remain the same, but the new mailing address is: AMSS, PO Box 409, Eden Valley, MN 55329. AMSS will be keeping the office in Beloit and I will be spending some time there. Any mail that gets sent to the old address will be forwarded to Minnesota. For fastest processing be sure to send it to the new address. We have made some technological advancements in the last few months as well. All of our electronic files and pictures have been moved to a cloud-based server. This change comes at a good time as it will reduce overall cost and helps ensure a smooth transition

In July, Vince and Rozanne Ruzic, Katie Agnew, Sharon and Elizabeth Fleming and I had the pleasure of attending the Canadian Field Day at the Oceanbrae Farm on Prince Edward Island. Graham Madeley, former President of the English Dairy Shorthorn Society was also in attendance. The first evening was a time to view the sale animals, enjoy drinks and deserts, rekindle old friendships, and make new ones. This was also the start of a small tag sale with Oceanbrae being the host. Nine head sold with an average of $2172. The next morning started with viewing of their animals. What a beautiful sunny day with just a hint of a breeze to cut the blazing sun as we walked through the pastures viewing the Barretts' animals! We had the opportunity to view several Jurist daughters and see Oceanbrae Ironman. What a great herd of cattle! They have dairy capacity along with the strength that we need for the breed to have success in the future. Next was the start of “How well do you know animals”. Contestants had to guess the weight of one cow. Next there were four cows and three calves and participants attempted to determine if they could match which calf belonged to which cow. Then there were two judging classes; a two-year-old and a four-year-old class. U.S. people fared quite well with these challenges. Sharon Fleming guessed the weight of the cow within one pound while Katie Agnew and I placed the animals closest with the judge, who is an Ayrshire breeder. Lunch was then provided by the Barrett family with about 80 people extending our discussions and learning about each other’s dairies and the economies of their countries. After lunch there was a fun auction held to make money for Junior activities. Yes, all of us left some U.S. dollars for a good cause and came home with some useful and delicious items. The CMSS Distinguished Service award was presented to Mike Sullivan of Maple Inn Farms. The Cow of the Year Award was Valley Crest Alice 39 EX 93 – 4E owned by Ivan and Diane Naylor. Alice was one of the cows that the Naylors purchased when they bought Harold Patterson’s herd when he retired. For those who attended World Dairy Expo in 2008, you may remember Alice 39, who placed fifth in her cow class that year. The annual meeting was opened by President John Knox. With Graham Madeley, Ryan Barrett and I visiting about our respective countries’ dairy industry and agriculture in general. It seems that all of us are pretty much in the same situation. But there are also some bright spots that we share in common. Each county has welcomed several new breeders into their societies. Mostly these are people who have others breeds and start with a couple of MS.

The

Making of

Legends

E

very legend has a beginning – and this October the Legends of the Fall will feature a long standing tradition of Milking Shorthorn greatness that is based on fact, not fiction. In 1914, two women set out to establish a dairy farm on Grizzley Island in the San Francisco Bay delta region of California. Miss Alexander and Miss Kellogg set their sights high from the very start, selecting the herd and farm name of “Innisfail” – an Irish term meaning “Isle of Destiny”. Backed by family wealth, Alexander and Kellogg were able to purchase quality foundation animals from around the U.S. and England. In 1915 they began to exhibit their show string at western shows and by rail in Chicago. After WWI, the herd was relocated to Davis, California, where the cows were first put on official test. And, as they say, the rest is history….. The current Innisfail operation consists of 300 head of which 150 cows are on a limited acreage dry lot operation in Orland, California. The cows are milked in a three-sided herring bone parlor and housed in an open-sided free stall barn with access to dirt lots. Divided into three groups, they are fed a TMR. The rolling herd average has peaked around 17,000 pounds of milk.

Calves are housed in hutches until weaned and moved to the Davis property. Heifers are not pushed for earliest age at calving as they are pasturebred and raised at Davis until they are in their springing stage. Stuart and Emily Rowe, along with their family, are the current generation continuing the Legend of Innisfail. Stuart’s son, John, and his sons help at the Orland operation. Emily’s sons Dan and Paul were essential in running the operation while Stuart and Emily were in Wisconsin when Stuart served as the Executive Secretary of the American Milking Shorthorn Society. Stuart’s father, John O., had worked for the Innisfail founding ladies as a teen. When he returned from the war, he, Stuart’s grandfather and uncle purchased the herd on a lease-purchase agreement in 1919. Later, after John O's brother left and his father retired, he became the sole proprietor along with Stuart’s mother, the daughter of an Indiana Milking Shorthorn breeder who was instrumental keeping records, raising six

children and feeding the hired help. In 1955 Stuart returned to the farm after graduating from UC-Davis and serving time in the military. Later, Stuart married Emily and they combined their families along with becoming more actively involved with the AMSS. The next several years saw them hosting two national conventions, doubling their herd size with the purchase of another dairy, and, with the help of family, traveling to judge numerous shows. Stuart also actively participated on various industry committees which all led to Stuart’s eventual hiring in 1997 as the Executive Secretary of the American Milking Shorthorn Society. After almost four years in Wisconsin, they returned to the family farm where, today, they continue to breed and develop their first passion – the Innisfail cows. The Innisfail Herd today still traces back to some of the founding families purchased from and developed by Miss Alexander and Miss Kellogg. One of these is Innisfail RO Lady 5086-EXP, the 2011 World Dairy Expo champion that traces back through the “Lady” family. The “Stellas” have three World Dairy Expo champions in their midst and descended from one of the cows that Stuart’s mother brought from Indiana with her when she married his father. The “Lobelia” and “Wild Rose” families came from cattle purchased from the California-based Foothill Herd in the early 1930s and have had seven World Dairy Expo championships to their credit. Over the years, other cow families have been added. At the pres-

ent time, however, every female in the herd is homebred and carrying the Innisfail prefix. In 2005, it was reported that there were Innisfail-bred cows on test in fourteen different states. Aggressive marketing and merchandising has contributed to the success of the Legends of Innisfail. Stuart provided this thought, “We recognized early on that without a large commercial base, the market for high production Milking Shorthorn cattle without good type was weak, so we tailored our program with that in mind. By utilizing pasture and homegrown roughages for economical production without pushing for maximum production, we increased the longevity of the herd, providing an increased number of females to merchandise.” Innisfail-bred cows have been Grand Champion over the years at the Chicago International, the National Dairy Cattle Congress, the World Dairy Expo, the All American Dairy Show, the Big “E”, the North American International Livestock Expo, several Western Nationals and some fifteen different State Fairs. This year already, Innisfail cows won four milking classes and were named Grand, Reserve Grand and Honorable Mention champions at the Iowa State Fair. Many Premier Breeder awards have been won over the years, several at large shows and even National Shows and some, that the Rowes were not exhibitors themselves.

One of the secrets to our success is recognizing our market The Rowes recently resumed scoring last year as they anticipated their retirement and upcoming sale. 22 cows scored Excellent. In 2013 nine more were added with five other Excellents raised in score. “This does not include some 15 cows around the country that have been sold and now carry the Excellent ratin,.” Stuart provided. “Admittedly, my interests have leaned more toward the breeding side of the business and I’ve been known to keep cows around with breeding, udder or age problems if I think they have genetic value.” This is one family that has created a Legend from a solid foundation and quality as evidenced by the Innisfail breeding around the globe that have provided production, type, longevity and a lot of satisfaction for their owners. Milking Shorthorn Journal

Fall 2013

President cont. from pg. 4

Exec cont. from pg. 4

We need to press forward and keep these people interested in increasing their holdings of Milking Shorthorn and Dairy Shorthorn cattle. In addition, this was the best year in several years for numbers of registrations for each organization. Dave Prinzen from Prinzville Dairy is the new president and Vice President is Don Richardson of Richford Farm. Interesting and enthusiastic discussions were had on several items where cooperative efforts will prove beneficial to each organization. One important area is in the identification, selection and proving of young sires. We need to share pedigrees and get as much semen used as quickly as possible. Canadian and English breeders have in the past and continue to use several US-bred bulls and we need to expand this international exchange of genetics which will be beneficial to all. Many U.S. breeders are using Oceanbrae Ironman whom we saw along with several calves sired by him. If you are looking for a polled bull, this might be a good choice as the calves are long-bodied and dairy.

to me working remotely. I will have easy access to any of our files from anywhere and it will eliminate the expense to maintain expensive hardware that outdates very quickly. In January, we will be switching our accounting program to Quickbooks Online – a change that I am excited about to make the accounting functions at the office a bit easier. There has been a change to the All-American and Junior All-American contests, as AMSS and Purebred Publishing have teamed up to bring you the 2013 contests. All of the entries, fees, and pictures will need to be submitted directly to Purebred Publishing (with the option to submit them online) and they have agreed to run the contest. All of the rules and fees will remain the same and the nominations and winners will be published in the Winter and Spring Journals, respectively. It is an exciting opportunity to work together to showcase the breed and make it the biggest and best contest yet! As the leaves on the trees begin to slowly change, we know the Fall Show Season is already here! I look forward to meeting many new and familiar faces in my travels to the Fall Shows. I wish everyone the best of luck. Remember to improve, promote and expand the Red, White & Roan. –Cory Salzl

SLOGAN AND LOGO CONTEST Here is a chance for you to put your creativity to work! AMSS wants you to send us your ideas for a slogan and/or a logo to be used to promote the Milking Shorthorn breed. The winner of each will receive a $50 gift card. Send your entries to: AMSS, PO Box 409, Eden Valley, MN 55329 or email: coryamss@outlook.com

– Entries are due by: November 15, 2013!

Fall 2013

AMSS Director Profile Kylie (Daniels) Preisinger Fayetteville, NC

Green Acres Milking Shorthorns (Vermont) is the home farm run by Craig & Joan Wortman (my mom and step-father), but I also own animals with the Monnat family (New York) under the SWAG prefix and I just moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina, after getting married in June to Peter Preisinger. Farm size: Green Acres is home to about 90 Milking Shorthorns with about 35 milking at any given time. We graze during the summer and supplement with some corn silage and grain. Cows are housed in a tiestall. Our RHA for August '13 was 14,257m 3.7% 522f, 3.0% 427p. Green Acres Titan Mascara - EXP, who is housed in NY with the Monnat family, was the top milk production cow in the AMSS for 2012. We average a classification score of 85.5 (36 of 55

animals scored - lots of 2-year-olds to get done this fall) with 9 Excellents. Other employment: I have been the Manager of Field Research for ADM Alliance Nutrition, Inc. of Quincy, Illinois, for 9 years. Favorite thing about MS: I am the 4th generation in my family to work with Milking Shorthorns, so there is a lot of tradition behind our cows. I've come to love the beauty of the breed and the amazing temperament of the cattle, but also the longevity of our cows and the fact that they are very easy to manage (calving ease, fertility and health). Why I ran for the board: I ran for the board because I wanted to help promote and grow our breed. Areas hoping to contribute while on the board: I hope to continue developing pro-

tocols and promotional tools that allow the AMSS to increase our numbers and involvement of our breeders. I would also like to strengthen relationships with foreign Shorthorn and Illawarra associations so that we can further improve the breed worldwide.

AMSS Director Profile Katie Agnew

Mapleton Valley Farms, Oconomowoc, WI Family: consists of my parents, Pat and Phyllis, my brother and his family, Tom, Keely and Bryn and myself Farm size: we milk 55 cows (Holstein, Red and White, Milking Shorthorns and an Ayrshire) in a tie-stall barn. We have about 60 head of youngstock. Current RHA for Milking Shorthorns is right around 17,500 with a 3.9%f and 3.2%p on 32 cows. We are on the Express program. We farm about 350 acres growing oats, wheat, alfalfa, soybeans and corn. Pat does quite a bit of custom work as well. Other employment: This year marks my tenth year teaching Chemistry at Nathan Hale High School in West Allis, WI. This past year, we began an Agriculture Club. We tried our hand at the Hoard's Dairyman judging contest and explored some local fisheries. This year, I am hoping to get the kids to Expo and the Wisconsin Farm Show.

Favorite thing about MS: I don't have just one...primarily it is the longevity. These girls can produce and reproduce in any setting, from grazing to confinement. They have the components. They are very tolerant of the surroundings, from -20 in the winter to hot and humid 90+ degree days in the summer. The health traits are wonderful as well. And they are pretty! Why I ran for the board: After teaching all of these years, I knew I wanted to work closely with juniors. They are such a driven group with so many fantastic ideas! I also wanted to continue to be a voice in policy and decision making. Our board is quite diverse in our backgrounds and involvement with cattle. Even during the school year, I am milking cows every day and enjoy working closely with them. Knowing the little nuances about production, health and conformation on a day-to-day basis helps give me another view of our breed. Areas hoping to contribute while on the

board: Juniors and working on the convention checklists...we really all have input on all committees...also like looking at breed outlook, education and milk production. It is certainly an honor to serve on the AMSS board, now for a second term...the people on the board are wonderful and it is an honor to represent breeders to help in decision making to help to expand and promote the red, white and roan.

National Milking Shorthorn

We interviewed our 2013-15 National Junior Milking Shorthorn Treasurer, Jessica Crawley, 16, who is the daughter of Tim & Nikki Craweley. She lives in Gravette, Ark. where she is home-schooled by her mom, Nikki, along with her younger sister, Brittany. Jessica's preference for the Milking Shorthorn breed came from her Grandpa and Dad, who have been in the Milking Shorthorn business for sixty years. She has been involved through showing at county and national shows for the past seven years with her family. Jessica’s most memorable Milking Shorthorn experience was at the 4-States Dairy Days Show where her Milking Shorthorns, Jaclyn and Maddie, won Champion Cow and Heifer. Then, the next year, Maddie won Supreme over all breeds! Over those seven years, her herd has grown to more than half of them being Milking Shorthorns. Jessica’s responsibilities on the farms include feeding calves every weekend. When the employee has the day off, she also helps with herd health, milking, moving and vaccinating. Outside of the show-ring Jessica plays softball in the spring and fall at the local school. She is also active in her local church group. As the 2012-2014 Arkansas State Dairy Ambassador, she has been busy educating consumers about the dairy industry. Her future plans include continuing her

family farm and exhibiting her animals at the shows. Milking Shorthorns are so special to her because they’re the breed she grew up loving and there are no flaws in the breed in her eyes! A 17-year-old that you will see in the show ring this fall handing out ribbons is Liza Van der Laan. She is your 2013-2014 National Milking Shorthorn Queen, She is the daughter of Pieter and Anita Van der Laan, of Fredrick, Oklahoma. She will be a Senior this fall at Frederick High school. Liza's Milking Shorthorn influence grew from her involvement with Clayside Farms. In the summer of 2007 her older siblings each bought a Holstein and Brown Swiss show heifer. She found herself looking in the Summer Journal for Milking Shorthorn breeders around the area. Clayside was the closest to her farm. She has been showing at the state level since 2007. In 2010 she attended her first national convention. Ever since, she has been hooked on the breed, and now you can see her showing even at the national level. That first year she received a Jr. All- American award. Along with applying for awards, she filled out the application for National Milking Shorthorn Queen this past summer. Other activities Ms. Van der Laan is involved with are the Holstein and Brown Swiss society. She is an active member of her FFA chapter com-

Fall 2013

peting in the CDES, Public Speaking, and winning two state Proficiency awards. She was a Page in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, and Liza found it a true eyeopener to state politics. Liza’s most memorable experience with the breed is at the age of 12 she showed her first Milking shorthorn at a county show. She won supreme heifer, and has yet to replicate that 5 years later! When it comes to responsibilities on her farm, Liza is in charge of feeding her show cattle. In the summer she helps more with the calving pen and feeding calves. She also helps with the summer harvest weighing in the trucks in the scale house. Her future plan after graduation from high school is to attend Oklahoma State (OSU) and major in Animal Science. She plans to continue to develop her Milking Shorthorn herd to increase overall production and continue showing. Liza finds the Milking Shorthorn special because they breed back so fast. At the beginning people told her “they won't milk as good as a Holstein” but the breed has proven these folks wrong - they milk great. She also finds them an incredible animal for a 4-H project. Get ready to see your 20132014 National Milking Shorthorn Queen in the ring, Miss Liza Van der Laan!
