he 2012 All-American and Jr. All-American nominees are presented in this issue. I find the All-American contest to be a very fun activity that can provide interest and intrigue to many of our members and even those outside the breed. Your own level of interest in the contest results themselves may range from complete apathy to a total infatuation with the outcome. At any rate, this time of year does give us the chance to see photos of many of the Seth Johnson most visually appealing animals in the breed. We hope you enjoy the photos. There are always plenty of feel-good stories throughout the show season. While I don’t begrudge those that stand near the top every year, it is always fun to see a first-time winner. In 2012, Misty Meadow Farm in Wisconsin, Walnut Ridge Farm in Maryland and Warwick Manor Farm of Pennsylvania all claimed the top spot at a National Show for the first time. Both Jaci Peterson of Misty Meadow and Katie Moser of Walnut Ridge triumphed in the Jr. Show as well, showing that our youth really can compete at the very top level. Lauren and Cara Woloohojian of Rhode Island won Grand Champion at the NJS-Louisville for their own first taste of National Show glory. Jaci, Katie and Lauren all won in their final year of eligibility as an AGA Junior Member and all with homebred cows! Congratulations to those youth and also to the adults that helped them make what are sure to be lasting memories. The excitement of the culmination of the 2012 show season has been eclipsed by a production feat never before seen in the Guernsey breed. Eighteen Registered Guernseys have exceeded the 40,000M mark, almost all in the last ten years. Coulee Crest Nick Lorilyn, VG-89, has become the first second-generation 40,000M cow in the breed. She recently finished a record of 3-05 365D 3x 42,440M 5.3% 2,254F 3.1% 1,298P. Her dam, Flambeau Manor Decision Lori, EX-90, finished her second lactation with credits of 3-09 365D 3x 44,250M 5.9% 2,600F 3.0% 1,313P. This is an astounding accomplishment as both cows maintained high levels of milk components throughout these records. The best part of this story is that they boast a deep pedigree that will benefit the breed genetically. Lori is a maternal sister to Flambeau Manor Tiller Les-ET and is backed by three more Excellent dams with high components. Lorilyn has an American Pie daughter that was 10th Jr. 2-Year-Old at Madison last fall. Both she and Lorilyn have sons in AI. Lori and Lorilyn are absolutely massive cows. Their extreme production comes from their strength. I have visited them several times in the last couple years. They live with about 40 other cows on a composted pack and are part of a large herd of Guernseys and Holsteins. Their owner, Kurt Peterson, no stranger to high production, claims he has never seen a pair of cows with the will to milk that they possess. Congratulations to Kurt, his brother Scot, and the whole crew at Coulee Crest. I also want to recognize Gary and Steve Van Doorn and their Family of Flambeau Manor Guernseys. They developed the original cow family and were willing sell quite a few quality animals to Coulee Crest when they were expanding their Guernsey herd. I want to draw your attention to a new feature in the Guernsey Breeders’ Journal for 2013. Most issues will feature one geographic area of the country. We will profile a breeder from that area, write about interesting operations in that region and you will hear from the AGA Director from that area. I encourage you to take the opportunity to help showcase your region by choosing to advertise when your region is featured. Our staff at Purebred Publishing stands ready to help you develop an advertising

very once in a while during my travels, there will be stretches when I do not see many new young sire daughters. This has been the case lately and I also have not been scoring quite as much the last two months so that makes it difficult at times to come up with an idea of what to write about in my monthly column. However when I was preparing to write this month there was one bull that came to mind, not because he is a new bull, but because his daughters have impressed me from day one and they continue to impress me. Sniders Option Aaron-ET has daughters all over the country that continue to impress me with their high, wide rear udders, outstanding feet and legs and balanced frames.

8

There are many older daughters now as well as young ones continuing to come on as breeders have flushed some of their best cows to Aaron and continue to get great ones. I recently saw a couple of Aaron bred heifers and was reminded that in recent years the udder promise on Aaron heifers, in my opinion, has been the best of any bull around. Now that the Aaron semen is all out in the field, our attention has turned to the many Aaron sons that have been sampled. I think the best proof of breeder satisfaction of the Aaron daughters has been through the use of his sons. Aaron sons have been very well sampled. The first nine Aaron sons to be sampled average 55 daughters registered. This is above average for registered daughters per young sire. More than half of the Aaron sons are out of cows without Tiller or Royal Oak blood. I think this has helped with the sampling as well, as breeders focus more on improving reproductive efficiency. In 2013, I think we will see many daughters of Aaron sons begin to freshen and it will be fun to see how they develop and see how their udders turn out. I just want to mention briefly what I have seen in the heifers out of a few of these Aaron sons. First, the most heavily used was Springhill Jackpot-ET with 114 daughters registered to date. Jackpot daughters have appeared often in the show ring the past two years. They have lots of style and balance and correct feet and legs. The one thing I have noticed is that many could use a little more width through-

out. Ripley Farms Aaron Cordell also has some older daughters that are showing a lot of strength and substance along with some style. Cordell’s dam was a Jens Gold Regis Z Special daughter and I think that is where the substance stems from. Sometimes they can be a bit coarse and need a little more angularity. One other bull I want to mention is Jens Gold Aaron Crunch-ET. Crunch has the second most daughters registered of the Aaron sons with 77 and his daughters began catching my attention last spring as I looked for sale consignments. The Crunch daughters as calves had a lot of strength, depth and dairyness and stood out to me in the calf hutches around the country. Hopefully all of the Aaron sons produce udders just as impressive as Aaron has done himself.

irst, let me congratulate all those with 2012 All-American nominations. The recognition is well deserved for your perseverance and promotion of the breed. As we look forward to the upcoming show season and sales, the nominees are a great representation of what the year has to offer. With the new proofs out and the resources available through the AGA, now is a good time to reevaluate sire selection. With the Association’s focus to improve reproduction, let me reiterate the AGA Genetic

Improvement Committee’s priorities: 1. reproductive efficiency, 2. percent protein with an increase in yield, 3. strength, 4. udder attachments, 5. foot angle, 6. percent fat with increase in yield, and 7. genetic diversity. Taking that into consideration and utilizing Production or Type Trait information, TPE, pedigree, and family background history, you have a strong foundation to overcome weaknesses and improve strengths. The ultimate goal should be an animal that represents what the breed is working towards whether it be in the show ring or in the milking barn. On a lighter note, The Wisconsin Guernsey Breeder’s State Convention will be held March 8-9 in the southwest corner of the State. We have secured 17 calves for the Video Calf Sale that will be held on the evening of the 8th in Darlington, WI. For further information about the convention and the posting of sale calves, go to the website www.wiguernsey.com. The calf sale is a great opportunity to find that show calf for the upcoming season and add a quality animal to your herd. In parting, the Wisconsin Guernsey Breeder’s Association is mourning the loss of four supportive members that made an impact with the Guernsey breed, Les

Peckham, Kathi Orchard, Mary Kirchner, and Howard Weisensel. (full obituaries on page 66). Although you may not have seen them in the show ring or their name replicated throughout the GBJ, these individuals founded interest, provided opportunities and resources, and reinforced the devotion their families have given to the breed. They will be greatly missed, but not forgotten, as their legacy lives on through their beautiful families.

All-American & Junior All-American Contest Summary

T

The All-American Contest

he 2012 All-American contest will provide lots of excitement and intrigue with the many re-rankings throughout the fall show season in most classes. A total of 14 animals made return appearances from the 2011 All-American contest. Six heifers nominated in 2011 are in contention again, including four of the six Fall Calves from 2011. One heifer from 2011 returns as a cow and seven 2011 nominees return in 2012 in the milking classes. Over 200 entries vied for one of the 123 nominations in 21 classes. The judges of the four National Guernsey Shows voted independently for their six nominees. Each class winner at Harrisburg, Madison and Louisville is awarded an automatic nomination. In the case of a tie, an AGA Approved Judge with personal exposure to all three big National Shows is asked to break the tie. Given that NGS-Harrisburg judge Stanley Chupp and his family had entries in 11 of the 15 individual classes, his associate judge, Kathy Yeoman, took his place on the nominating committee. The official nominating committee was: Kathy Yeoman, NGS-Harrisburg; Paul Trapp, NGS-Sacramento; Adam Liddle, NGS-Madison; and Ted Dement, NGS-Louisville.

The Owners The individual nominees in the 2012 All-American contest hail from 18 different states. Pennsylvania easily outpaced the rest of the pack with 21.5 nominees. Wisconsin was an easy second with 13 nominees. Ohio and Oklahoma tied with eight nominees each. They were followed by Illinois, New York and Connecticut.

Forty-six different owners account for at least one All-American nominee in 2012. That list is led by Snider Homestead Farm of New Enterprise, Pennsylvania. They easily outpace the field with 11 individual nominations and add six group classes for a total of 17 nominations. Chupps Farm of Inola, Oklahoma, follows with eight individuals and four groups for a total of 12 nominations. Morey Miller of Millborne Farm in Granby, Connecticut, owns all or part of seven individuals and five groups for a total of 12. Warwick Manor Farm of East Earl, Pennsylvania, notched five individual nominations and three groups for eight total. Knapp’s Guernseys, the leading herd in 2011, were awarded four individual nominations and six groups for 10 total, just one less than their 2011 tally. The Junior All-American Contest

he National Junior Guernsey Shows provided a great environment for friendly competition and the lifelong friendships and memories. The 84 nominees were selected from over 100 entries by the Jr. All-American selection committee consisting of: Chris Lahmers, NJS-Harrisburg; Paul Trapp, NJS-Sacramento; Adam Liddle, NJS-Madison; and Craig Padgett, NJS-Louisville. The Sires Twenty-nine sires accounted for the nominated heifers while 24 sires supplied the nominated cows. In all, 43 sires can claim a 2012 Jr. AllAmerican nominee. Edgewater Meadows Yogibear-ET produced six nominated heifers and four cows to lead both categories for a total of 10. Sniders Deemand Adacka also produced four nominated cows, as well as a pair of heifers for a total of eight. Indian Acres American Pie produced three heifers and cows for a total of six nominees. Valentine’s Day does not always have to be about your significant other, or buying him/her the most expensive gift. Something else deserves to be treated special on such a loving holiday, something that means so much to all of us. That’s right, our Guernsey Cows deserve to be treated extra special to fill their hearts with love. What more can you do to make your cows feel loved? Well there are three different ranks for how much you love your cows on Valentine’s Day! Are you a bronze, silver, or gold medal when it comes to how much you care about your cows? In the bronze medal category you only have to do a couple extra little things to show your Guernsey cows you love them. Make Valentine’s the day that you clean out the water troughs. Also you can add a little bit of top dressing to one of your feedings. That way the cows will be able to enjoy a gourmet dinner that makes them full and happy! Although you are not going

58

out of your way to prove to your cows that they are special to you in the bronze medal category, the cows will still be able to tell that you care! For the silver medal category you have to do a little bit more including the steps in the bronze medal. On Valentine’s Day take time to clean out the barns! After the barns are all cleaned out, and you are ready to bed down add some more bedding to the cows’ pens or stalls. That way your cows will go from laying comfortably, to feeling like they are laying on cloud nine. Make sure that your cows are comfortable and moving around freely. If you are truly devoted to your cattle then the gold medal has your name written all over it. Not only will you clean the water troughs, add a special top dressing to one of their feedings, clean out the barns, and add more bedding, but you will go the extra mile to prove that your heart is filled with love. Your cows may be what bring in your income, or you could own them as a hobby. Either way, we all still love and care for

Guernsey Cows. Cows react better in a non-stressful environment, and they can tell how their owner feels. On Valentine’s Day speak calmly in the barns. If you would do anything for your cows to prove your love then the next challenge is for you. While walking through the barn sing to your cows your favorite love song so that they can sense how you feel. “Love, love me do, you know I love you! I'll always be true, so please, love me do, oh, love me do.” This is a perfect example of what you can sing to be a gold medalist of love for our wonderful golden breed. Are you a bronze, silver, or gold medalist when it comes to how much you love your cows? On Valentine’s Day and the rest of the year, go above and beyond to prove your love to your cows! If you do end up singing to your cows please video it, and send it to the National Guernsey Association! Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day, and prove how much you love the Guernsey Breed. Love MOO!

Breeder's Round Table

W

e are right in the midst of the All American and Jr. All American contests with nominees listed in this issue and the winners named right around the corner. We asked several breeders a few questions regarding their experiences with the All American contest. Answering our round table of questions was: Berneta Gable of Sniders Homestead Farm, New Enterprise, Pennsylvania; Susan Woloohojian of Wee Acres Guernseys, West Greenwich, Rhode Island; Thomas McCarty of Rock Hill Farm, Hughesville, Pennsylvania Kristen Heitke of Knife Lake Farm, Mora, Minnesota

lar about hay, as much as the calf can eat from birth and high quality hay; 2. Network of people you have helping you, from the farm to the show crew. 3. You have to have that especially unique and great guy prepping cattle. Woloohojian: 1. Great genetics; 2. Timing at the shows for the animal looking its best; 3. Good fortune and a really good team. McCarty: 1. A well-bred animal; 2. A wellgrown and well-developed, good condition; 3. Proper preparation for show ring from leading to fitting. Heitke: 1. Genetics; 2. Nutrition: 3. You have to want it – you need the drive for the extra work it takes.

are theirs. It rewards hard work and it’s the validation that the animal really is good. McCarty: It can definitely help market animals with results listed on pedigrees. It’s also nice to see all the winners together from shows and if you put all the time and effort into the shows, you might as well enter. Heitke: It’s for the extra marketing opportunities that can come with the All-American.

1. How many All-Americans have you had or that you can recall: Gable: Through 2010 we’ve had 18 AllAmerican’s and 20 Reserve All-Americans. Woloohojian: We’ve had 2 or 3 plus Junior All-Americans McCarty: We’ve had many nominees since we bought our first calf in 2007 and we did have some in the Junior division. Heitke: We’ve had 2 All-Americans and several Junior All Americans when I was showing as a Junior. 2. Try to describe, in 10 words or less, what it’s like to find out you got a nomination: Gable: It’s satisfying knowing that what you are breeding is working. Woloohojian: Amazed and the thought “We finally made it!” McCarty: Great that all the hard work has paid off for the ongoing yearlong project. Heitke: Overjoyed that all the hard work paid off. 3. How much work is involved getting an All-American nominee? Gable: An extreme amount of work, especially when you send them to all three national shows. It’s not only that but it starts the day the calf is born. We don’t treat anything special – they all are because in the back of our mind, they can all be All American nominees. Woloohojian: Tons – its genetics, getting them to the shows and a lot of luck. McCarty: A lot with leading, special diets, constant maintenance and body care, along with fitting. Heitke: A lot with special diets and working with them beforehand. 4. What in your opinion are three key components to having an All-American? Gable: 1. Breeding, always breed from good cow family; Feeding: we are particu-

5. Why do you enter the All-American contest? Gable: Because that is the pinnacle of showing cows which we love and it’s a really good promotional tool for us in selling our cattle. It’s the pinnacle of all the hard work at getting out to the shows. When farming, it’s also the getting away to the shows and change of pace and the result is the All-American. Woloohojian: It’s for the kids, the animals

Guernsey Breeders’ Journal — Febraury 2013

Tom McCarty summed his thoughts up in this statement: “We need to remind ourselves sometimes that it’s not just about the contest but also being at the shows, looking at sires and potential for marketing. We feel very fortunate to be a part of the contest and honored that we had some that competed with the best of the best.”

Congratulations to all of the 2012 AllAmerican & Jr. AllAmerican Nominees

NATIONAL DAIRY SHRINE AWARD APPLICATIONS DUE MARCH 15

N

ational Dairy Shrine is again seeking nominations for its most prestigious awards: Guest of Honor, Pioneer, Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder, Progressive Dairy Producer, and Graduate Production Award. The Guest of Honor is given to a contemporary dairy leader for outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the dairy industry. It has been awarded every year since 1949 when Dean H. Kildee was named the first Guest of Honor. Each year, three to four living or deceased Pioneers of the dairy industry are honored by National Dairy Shrine for their service and leadership in the dairy industry. Meanwhile, the Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder is an award which recognizes active, progressive dairy producers who, through their expertise in managing a dairy breeding herd based upon sound genetics and business principles, serve as a model of success for fellow breeders throughout the country. All these award winners’ accomplishments are on permanent display in the Dairy Hall of Fame at the National Dairy Shrine Museum in Fort Atkinson, Wis. One of National Dairy Shrine’s newer awards, the Progressive Dairy Producer Award, is given to producers ages 21 to 45 who have introduced and applied effective management and business practices that

72

help achieve more profitable dairy businesses. Two $2,000 awards for education and travel are given annually, one for herd sizes with 300 milk cows or less and a second for herds with over 300 milk cows. The Graduate Dairy Production Award recognizes and assists qualified two-year and four-year agricultural college graduates efforts to pursue a career in commercial dairy farming and to gain ownership of dairy cattle with the intent of growing their dairy herd. The applicant must be employed in a herd management role on a commercial dairy when completing the award application. The winner will receive a $2,500 award from National Dairy Shrine. Nominations or applications must be submitted on official forms by March 15. If you know someone who should be nominated for these awards, please visit the NDS website at www.dairyshrine.org and click on “Adult Awards” to view a complete listing of each award form. Then you can download the application for the respective award desired. You can also request an application for the respective award via email at info@dairyshrine.org or by mail at PO Box 725, Denmark, WI. 54208. The annual National Dairy Shrine awards banquet will be held on September 11th during the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. For more infor-

mation about the banquet please contact Dr. David Selner, Executive Director, at (920) 863-6333. National Dairy Shrine membership information is also available online at www.dairyshrine.org. Dairy enthusiasts are encouraged to become a part of this important organization to help honor our heritage, inspire future leaders and promote the dairy industry.
