Members of the Iowa Brown Swiss Association are excited to share our beautiful state with you. We are proud of our heritage of hard-working Iowa families who have developed the Brown Swiss breed here for more than a century. And we are equally delighted to showcase the outstanding herds, farms and people who continue to advance Brown Swiss cattle in Iowa today. For several years, we have worked together to plan this week’s activities. We hope you will enjoy the fabulous scenery, hospitality, food, spirits and – of course – Big Brown Cows – we have in store for you. From the interesting tours, social events, and junior activities; to the Fun Auction, National Youth Heifer Show and National Sale, it promises to be a fun and relaxing four days. This tradition has been raising funds to support Brown Swiss juniors for 36 years. We've got some exciting items committed to this year's sale, like a set of wooden benches from the Pfeiler's of Holy Cross, Iowa, and a paperweight depicting Silver Bell registration #9322, donated by Jodi Porter, Denver, Iowa. “Silver Bell” was the 1928 National Champion Female developed , by Dr C.F. Osborne from Hampton, Iowa, and sold to Walhalla Farms for $5,400 in April 1928. 2018 National Brown Swiss Convention June 27 – Wednesday All day until 8:00 p.m. -- Registration at the Hotel Cattle check-in at the Johnson County Fairgrounds

June 28 – Thursday 6:30-8:00 a.m. -- Breakfast at the Hotel Chores 9:00 a.m. -- Heifer Clinic at the fairgrounds. From Bottle to Show Ring, we will explore and review things like choosing your heifer, haltering, feeding, bathing, clipping, proper show ring etiquette, herdsmanship, and much more with pros from all around Iowa. Noon – Lunch at the fairgrounds 1:00 p.m. -- Judging Contest for all ages. See how well our officials do when they choose their top animals. 3:00-5:00 p.m. -- Free time, chores and head for the hotel for the Junior Banquet and Fun Auction. June 29 - Friday 6:30-8:00 a.m. -- Breakfast at the Hotel Chores 9:00 a.m. -- Fitting Contest. Groups will be created as you work together to fit animals for the imaginary showring. Those not fitting will be the judges along with a panel of officials. Noon – Lunch at the fairgrounds. Free time in the afternoon. There will be some barn activities for the Juniors during down time. Brown Swiss Association members from across the country will be displaying their photography talents at the 2018 National Brown Swiss Photo Contest. All entrants must be adult or junior members of the National Brown Swiss Association. All of the photos must be farm-related, with a positive portrayal of Brown Swiss animals preferred. Winners of the photo contest will be announced Thursday evening, June 28, at the Youth Banquet. A Best of Show and People’s choice award will be given in each age division. General Interest Tours Showcase Iowa Heritage and Technology By Maureen Hanson

Iowa recently was rated the 2018 overall “#1 Best State” by U.S. News and World Report magazine, and we Iowa Brown Swiss breeders are eager to show off a number of unique, interesting and exciting locations our state has to offer. Buses will depart at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 28 for these intriguing tours: #1 – Dan and Debbie’s Creamery, Ely, Iowa Owned and operated by Dan and Debbie Takes, this family enterprise embraces the farm-to-table concept by supplying retail dairy products from the Takes’ herd of 150 cows. In 2013, they purchased an old lumber yard building located less than five minutes from their farm. In between the morning and night milkings, the family spent all of their free time making the necessary changes to the building to have it ready to produce value-added dairy products. Nearly three years later, on July 20, 2016, the family made their first vat of cheese using the milk from their own dairy farm. Today, Dan and Debbie’s Creamery is a popular local source of squeaky cheese curds, handcrafted ice cream, and cream-top milk. The family has big plans for further product expansion in the future. The tour will include a behind-the-scenes look at their processing facility, along with their attractive retail space, and a chance to visit with Dan and Debbie personally. #2 – Kinze Manufacturing, Williamsburg Iowa The Kinze brand planters, grain carts and other implements operated on farms throughout the United States and around the world are the fruits a single man’s ingenuity and labor. Jon Kinzenbaw opened a small welding shop in Victor, Iowa in 1965. Since then, Kinze Manufacturing has grown into one of the largest privately held agricultural manufacturers in North America. One early Kinze innovation – the first-ever single-axle, lowprofile grain cart with giant, high-flotation tires – was introduced in 1971, and revolutionized grain-handling during harvest. Based on input from his farmer friends, Kinzenbaw invented a rear-folding planter toolbar in 1975, which changed the way virtually every brand of row-crop planters was designed from that point forward. The morning at Kinze will feature a factory tour of the massive Kinze manufacturing facility, along with a tour of the impressive Kinze Innovation Center, which showcases Kinze’s rich heritage and highlights technology shaping the future of farming. Amana Colonies Both of these non-farm tours then will converge for a joint lunch and tour of Iowa’s historic Amana Colonies. Lunch will be served at the Ox Yoke Inn, located in Main Amana. An Amana Colonies tradition since 1940, the Ox Yoke Inn features traditional, family style meals made from timeless Old World German and American recipes. Following lunch, guests will take a twohour motor coach tour of the Amana Colonies, a settlement of seven villages established in 1855 by a group of German immigrants escaping religious persecution. They brought with them the food and customs of their homeland, and embraced communal-style living. Farming and the production of wool and calico supported the community, but village enterprises – everything from clock-making to brewing – also were vital, and well-crafted products became a hallmark of the Amanas. The communal model of living was abandoned during the Great Depression. But the Amana people strove to preserve their heritage by establishing the Amana Society, Inc., which manages the farmland, fabric mills and other enterprises, and preserves the Amana Colonies as a tourist destination. Now a National Historic Landmark, the Amana Colonies attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Following the tour, guests will have an hour to shop in the Amanas before returning to the convention headquarters hotel in Iowa City at 5:00 p.m.

Farm Tours Feature Two Progressive Iowa Herds

By Maureen Hanson If you’re looking forward to an enjoyable day of seeing great cattle, beautiful scenery and state-of-the-art dairy facilities, the farm tours will not disappoint. We have planned an exciting farm-tour day that will begin bright and early on Thursday, June 28, with the buses loading at 6:30 a.m. The tour will include a picnic lunch at the second stop, with the buses returning to the convention hotel by 5:00 p.m. Along the way, you will enjoy visiting two outstanding Iowa dairy operations where Brown Swiss roots run deep.

Jo-Lane Dairy, Monona, Iowa

systems save labor, promote management consistency, and provide a wealth of useful data. An automated feed pusher, light sensors, temperature-controlled fans, automated alley scraper, and sand bedding all contribute to the Schuttes’ goals for optimal cow comfort, cleanliness, and milk production. The Schuttes also farm 250 acres of corn and alfalfa, all of which is used to feed their cows and young stock. They incorporate sustainable practices into their management systems that include strip cropping, terracing, re-using barn water and recycling feedstorage plastics. Just as the dairy has grown since their union started 12 years ago, so too, has the Schutte Family. Lance and Jonna are proud to be raising Blake, Briella, Breklyn and Brayton on the farm, teaching them the same values, family bonds and work ethic that they

experienced in their own young lives.

Hilltop Acres, Calmar, Iowa

barn for maternity and special-needs cows. The expansion allowed the Masheks to grow their herd to its current size of 400 lactating cows, all of which are Brown Swiss. Cows are milked in a double-12 parallel parlor, and all three barns that house adult cows have headlocks for easy, stress-free animal handling. Young stock at Hilltop Acres are reared in two facilities. The calf barn holds 200 calves up to six months of age, and includes two automated feeding pens for raising preweaned calves. Newborn calves are started in one of 15 individual calf pens, and weaned heifers are moved to one of six group pens. The calf barn features thermostatcontrolled sidewall curtains on the north side. Older heifers are moved to an open-front, 36 X 108foot heifer barn built in 2003, with individual runs dividing the barn into six group pens. The Masheks started shipping their own milk after the expansion. They

haul a tanker-load of milk every other day to Rochester, Minn. Milk production is of utmost priority, with Hilltop Acres achieving a current, 305-day herd average of 27,791 pounds of milk, 1,228 pounds of fat, and 1,008 pounds of protein. The operation also includes 470 acres of owned and 300 acres of rented crop ground, all of which is used to generate feedstuffs for the Hilltop Acres herd. This scenic farm, featured in Our Iowa magazine as one of the “Prettiest Farms in Iowa,” also will be the site of our catered lunch with two meats.

When a pair of “dairy kids” gets together, wonderful things can happen, as evidenced by the outstanding dairy operation and family you will meet at this stop. Jo-Lane Dairy is owned by Lance and Jonna (Worden) Schutte, and operates on the farm site where Lance grew up in the breathtaking, rolling hills of Clayton County. Lance was raised with Holsteins, while Jonna grew up with Brown Swiss and Ayrshires. Today Jo-Lane Dairy houses 130 lactating cows – about 100 Holsteins and 30 Brown Swiss. The Schuttes focus on developing elite genetics, and have sold several bulls from both breeds to A.I. companies. A farm transformation took place in 2013-14, when the dairy was equipped with two Lely A4 Robotic Milkers, and a GEA autofeeder for raising preweaned calves. Both

History runs deep at Hilltop Acres, an 8th-generation family farm in beautiful Winneshiek County. The farm was Homesteaded in 1854 and is owned and managed by the Mashek family – Dennis and Barb Mashek, along with their sons, Josh & Tanner. The Masheks also have a daughter, Kylie, who has autism and lives in a group home about 45 miles from the farm. Josh and Gina’s son, Parker, represents the newest generation of Masheks. Guests will have the opportunity to view both the excellent cows and facilities at Hilltop Acres. The Masheks pride themselves on the outstanding Brown Swiss genetics they have developed, with many bulls placed in A.I. over the years. Their current headliner is Hilltop Acres B Daredevil, whose semen is available from New Generation Genetics. “Daredevil” is the Brown Swiss breed’s #1 Udder Composite and Type bull, and is free of all haplotypes and recessives. Hilltop Acres underwent an expansion in 2014, which included the addition of a 120 X 278-foot free stall barn that includes 244 stalls; and a 40 X 60-foot bedded-pack Iowa National Convention Program | 10
