Director’s Comments Greetings and Happy New Year!

In the spirit of out with the old and in with the new, resolutions for the New Year have been planned out and set. While trying to survive winter and looking forward to the green grass again, I want to discuss a resolution for the littlest members of our herds, the baby calf. These calves are the future of our herds and a lot of planning has already gone into making them genetically better by the semen we choose to breed their mothers to. We have also spent time vaccinating the dry cow or heifer prior to calving to reduce the risk of disease and sickness once the calf is born. Now that we have them on the ground, I want to discuss how to increase their value through feeding them, primarily with milk or milk replacer feeding frequency. Historically, these calves have been fed milk or milk replacer twice a day, a system that fits well into our work schedules. Unfortunately, research has shown that this system of twice daily feeding is preventing calves from growing as fast and efficiently as they could. Two of the advantages of feeding milk or milk replacer three times daily are more feed efficiency and improved average daily gain. This translates to calves growing taller and longer, with added pounds of lean growth. This type of growth is optimal for dairy calves to help prepare them for desirable breeding weights, leading to greater lifetime production. Think about other species. Beef calves generally nurse 4 to 8 times a day and human babies nurse multiple times a day also. Although we know it isn’t desirable to leave the calves with their mothers to nurse 4 to 8 times per day, think about how mother nature has designed them to require the extra nutrients and calories to grow. This is especially important during winter when perhaps the biggest downside to twice daily calf feeding is the extra stress they are under due to wet and cold weather. This stress can double the daily calorie needs of calves and lead to weight loss, increased sickness, and greater risk of death.

Mary Creek What is a major disadvantage of switching to a three times a day feeding schedule? Labor! 18811 Wagaman Rd., Hagerstown, MD 21740 I completely understand this. When I was in college in South Dakota back in 1996-1997, (301) 471-0726 Expires 2017 I did the third shift milking for a dairy owned by a gentleman who had immigrated from Lynn Lee Holland. This milking shift began at 11pm and ended around 3-4 am. On this dairy after P.O. Box 1229, Smyrna, TN 31767 each milking, we fed calves. Yep, at 3 am every night/morning, year round, we went out (615) 390-6312 Expires 2016 and fed the calves in hutches. It would be so cold we would put the bottles in the holders Mark Valentine for the hutch calves and crawl into an empty hutch until they were finished. Luckily, this 15621 B Kelbuh Rd, Thurmont, MD 21788 doesn’t have to be! Don Sockett, DVM, PhD, with the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic (240) 674-6092 Expires 2015 Laboratory, devised a feeding time table that is much more pleasant and achievable. The Region 3 three times daily schedule were fed at 8 am, 2:30 pm and 9 pm. During his research, Dr. Lloyd Machin Sockett showed this schedule didn’t add a lot of extra labor. He also showed that 97.1% of 6614 Iowa St., Newton, IA 50208 the calves fed three times a day entered the lactation herd versus only 80.0% of the calves (641) 792-9523 Expires 2017 fed twice a day. Thus, for every six calves fed three times a day, one additional heifer Darryl Keehner entered lactation. Calves fed three times a day also averaged 1,136 pounds more milk and 32057 Leaf Rod, Guttenberg, IA 52052 calved 16 days earlier in Dr. Sockett’s trial. l

So as we continue into the New Year, consider making a resolution to feed those babies three times a day. It can be done in an efficient and beneficial manner that will lead to great returns. Thank you for allowing me to serve on your Board of Directors and taking the time to read my ramblings. I am honored and privileged to serve. Have a great 2015!

Calf Raising Round Table Although a good dairy herd is measured by milk production and show records, it actually starts just prior to the birth of each of those animals and is established within the first year of a calf’s life. Genetics play a role but so does management. We’ve asked three breeders to answer a series of questions on calf care. Jessica and Brett Dixon and their son Diesel farm in Conway, Missouri, where their Stil Dreamn Dairy milks 35 Ayrshires, 20 Guernseys, 15 Holsteins and one Jersey. Their focus is on intensive grazing supplemented with haylage and corn silage. The 70 head herd has an average classification score of 88 points. Sharon and Jim Tentinger are from Remsen, Iowa. Their Ten-Ayr herd consists of 200 milking purebred Ayrshires. They and their son, Travis, and two outside employees handle all the farm duties. Travis is in charge of raising the steer calves. Andrew Evans of Sunny Acres Farm in Georgetown, New York is in charge of the calves on the family farm. Sunny Acres has been in the family since 1865 with Ayrshires raised since 1932. The farm has bred and owned close to 200 All-American nominations, has received numerous French Trophies and Constructive Breeder Awards. The 2013 herd average was over 27,000 pounds of milk. Currently in the herd there are 24 Excellent and 11 Very Good Ayrshires, 2 Excellent Brown Swiss, 2 Excellent Holsteins and 1 Very Good Jersey.

Calf raising procedures – from pre-birth to weaning: Dixon: Healthy babies start before conception. Our cows are vaccinated with Bovi-sheild before breeding. They receive J-vac at dryoff and Muse at the time of entering the springer pen. Calves receive Calf Guard around two days old and Blackleg vaccinations at weaning. I raise calves in individual huts on gravel. They get fed whole milk (usually from a Holstein with low components) and the same grain as the older heifers. I feed no calf starter. I also use calf coats during the winter months. Tentinger: Our cows and heifers are kept up to date with their vaccinations. Scour shots, along with the dry cow treatment, are given to the cows so the immunity is passed along to the calf before it is born. This also helps increase good quality colostrum when the cow freshens. The calf is taken away from the cow immediately and put in individual huts. The calf is given an oral shot of Calf Guard and 4 quarts of colostrum within 24 hours of birth. If it is large calf, we will give more than 2 quarts if the calf wants it. When the calf is three days old, they are given an oral dose of Inforce and a sulfa calf bolus. At this time, they are switched to powder milk replacer and drinking out of a pail. After each feeding the pails or bottles are washed with soap and hot water. We monitor the calves several times a day and watch for any

signs of illness, such as droopy ears, nose discharge, scours and watery eyes. Any abnormal behavior is noted and treated. We use electrolytes and Vitamin B along with Baytril, Nuflor, Excenel and Excede, depending on the illness. We will use an antihistamine if necessary. The calves are weaned in approximately 42 days depending on their consumption of grain. The heifers and steers are separated at this time and have different feeding programs. The heifers are fed grain along with hay while the steers receive grain. Evans: Prior to calving we start slowly transitioning the dry cows for freshening with a small amount of grain and steamed flaked corn. At birth the calves are given as much colostrum as they will take along with an E. coili vaccine, a Rota Corona vaccine and selenium. At 2-3 days of age they are switched onto a 25/20 milk replacer and a 22% textured Ampli Calf grain and water and kept on that for around 3 months with hay being added to the diet around 2 months of age. At 3 months of age they are switched to an 18% fortified pellet and a dash of 40% on top and moved into a transition barn. Anything special that you believe adds hardiness to your calves: Dixon: In 2009 I switched from milk

replacer to feeding whole milk because of the economy. I stuck with it because I believe that feeding milk from your own herd helps provide immunity to diseases specific to the farm. I also prefer the individual huts opposed to a calf barn because they are easier to keep disease free and if one calf gets sick it does not spread through all of them as easily. Tentinger: We believe in putting the calves in outside huts during the winter. We keep them bedded, dry and out of the wind which helps them adjust to the environment. During the cold months, they get 20% more powder milk than they receive in the summer months. Evans: Depending on the weather and temperature we adjust amounts of grain fed and how long they are kept of replacer and how much bedding gets used. How does your region play into your calf raising techniques (weather, temps, area): Dixon: In Southwest Missouri we get dramatic temperate changes, which is one reason I love calf coats. They are easy to take off or put on. But we still battle respiratory issues frequently because of the temperature changes. Blackleg is also a huge problem in our area. There have been times in the past when it was necessary to vaccinate brand new babies. Tentinger: Our temperatures vary from 100 degrees in the summer time to 20 degrees below zero in the winter time. So we make sure there is plenty of clean water and shade

6 Ayrshire Digest

for the calves in the summer. In the winter we keep them out of the wind and dry. The newborn calf is dry before they are put in the hut. Any noticeable differences between breeds (if you have multiple breeds): Dixon: Ayrshires are definitely the easiest to raise. If they eat from the cow they will usually still eat colostrum from the bottle later. Ayrshires rarely miss a meal. I battle getting some of the other breeds to eat at all, along with fighting scours and pneumonia more in the other breeds. Evans: Of all the breeds we have, the Ayrshires tend to adjust the best to everything with the Swiss and Jerseys a close second. Have you had success with heifers and utilizing sexed semen – or any tips on getting more heifers? Dixon: The only sexed semen we have purchased in any of the breeds is some Burdette. We focus on high type and a lot of the sexed bulls available do not meet our standards. Years ago we started breeding during standing heat as opposed to the next

January/February 2015

milking but that no longer seems to help. We have had a terrible heifer ratio the last few years. Sexing the semen during IVF seems to be the most effective way to increase our heifer crop. Herd bulls, and bulls we have collected privately, have yielded us more heifers versus semen brought from AI companies. Tentinger: We do not use sexed semen. As any dairyman, we prefer heifers but raising steers has an economic advantage to our operation. We have noticed more heifers being born from young sires. Evans: We have not used much sexed semen as of yet.

heifer will be sired from a show dam/bull. The production heifer will come from a cow milking 28,000 pounds or more in consecutive lactations. Our cattle buyer notices a difference in the frames of steers that come from a show cow versus a steer from a production cow. In our herd we breed mainly for production. Evans: Our best marketing tools are Facebook and shows. With pictures that we post on Facebook and people getting to see the dams of the calves at shows, we do get some phone calls wanting to know if we have calves for sale.

What are your keys to successful marketing of calves for public and private treaty sales: Dixon: Full age show calves, especially March babies are always in high demand. Ayrshire and Guernsey show calves are hard to find in our area. We typically have people calling us looking for them but when we consign a good one placing at least one ad in the Digest or Journal is desired. Tentinger: When it comes to selling heifers, it depends if the buyer wants a show animal or production animal. A show

oe Gibbs of Epworth, Iowa, was the judge for the 2014 Southern National Ayrshire Show, held Tuesday, November 11 in Louisville, Kentucky. The heifer show started off strong, culminating with the first-place junior yearling Mowry’s Soldier Ambrosia being named Junior Champion. This Soldier daughter is owned by Jared Helsley of Roaring Springs, Pennsylvania, and is out of the 2005 Reserve Junior All-American Spring Calf, Mowry’s Tri-Star Amber. Ridge View Dozer Camo, of Ridge View Farm, Lancaster, Missouri, was chosen as the Reserve Junior Champion. The Dozer daughter was the first-place intermediate yearling. Achieving the title of Intermediate Champion, and later Reserve Grand Champion, was Maplecrest Potter Gold Medal, the first-place senior three-yearold exhibited by Michael Maier of Stitzer, Wisconsin. Gold Medal was nominated AllAmerican in 2012 and 2013. Gibbs chose his first-place junior two-year-old, Klein’s Poker’s Teah as his Reserve Intermediate Champion. Teah is bred and owned by James Klein and Family of Milton, Indiana. Rounding out the show, judge Gibbs named the first-place aged cow, Lone-Elm Modem Lady EX-92, his Senior and Grand Champion cow. Lady, who was nominated All-American in 2013, is owned by Daniel

Hoppaugh, Columbia Cross Roads, Pennsylvania. Onword Wilton April, the first-place four-year-old, was named Reserve Senior Champion for Jason and Kayla Steinlage, Eric Lang and Dave Koss of Lanuler, Iowa. Most recently, April was Reserve All-American in 2012. With their titles as Reserve Intermediate Champion as well as Premier Breeder, James Klein and Family helped secure Indiana the title of State Herd. Hall’s Ayrshires of Cushing, Oklahoma, not only achieved the title of Premier Breeder, but also exhibited the Total Performance Cow, Muellers BBBK Calista EX-93. Calista, the first-place 100,000 Pound Cow, has multiple records over 28,000M and her LTD is 1688D 130,560M 5405F 4630P. Listed are the top six in each class Junior Calves (16) 1. Jensen Joins Purebred Team Purebred Publishing is pleased to introduce their newest team member, Jade Jensen. As the sales executive, Jade’s responsibilities will include selling advertising space in the Milking Shorthorn Journal and other Purebred Publishing publications. She takes over for Lindsey Rucks, who has returned to work with her family on their dairy farm. Jade brings a strong background in dairy and great work ethic to the team. Jade is the 22-year-old daughter of Jeff and Mary Jensen of Four J’s Farm, Conway, Missouri. What began as a traditional 4-H project with a few calves eventually evolved into a 60-cow dairy over a span of a decade. They herd currently consists of about 50% Guernseys, 25% Ayrshires, and the other 25% are crossbreds. Until recently, Jade was very involved with the home farm helping on the weekends milking and with the essential jobs such as vaccinating and herd checks along with her sister, Jarica, when they were home from college. Jade’s responsibilities were to take care of

the classification preparation clipping udders and making sure paper work was in order. She was also responsible to get any show prospects ready for shows and care for them at the shows. The Jensens are an intensive grazing herd who try to utilize their grounds to get the most efficiency out of their cows. Jade also individually mates cows to bulls that possess the traits they are focused on and they also seek out a herd bull with a deep pedigree for production components, longevity, and type that can be used for a clean-up bull. Jade is a recent graduate of Missouri Southern States University with a BSBA in accounting and a degree in management. She currently lives in New Richmond, Wisconsin, where she is involved with Crisdhome Farms. Jade attributes much of her success and accomplishments to the number of well-known breeders and herds she has worked with over the past several years. She has worked on many show strings as

well as on sale crews around the country. Her accomplishments are many, most recently named the Merle Howard Award winner at the 2014 World Dairy Expo and the Outstanding Youth at the American Guernsey Association National Convention in 2014. She has also won fitting and
