always anticipate our ABA Board of Director meetings, for several reasons. It’s good to connect as a group and renew our focus on goals, both long and short-term. The Directors meet in person twice per year. In between, we communicate by conference calls, mail, email and telephone calls. We had our winter meetings at the ABA office not long ago. The committees and board of directors had some tough decisions to make. There were frank discussions and plenty of differences of opinions. We acknowledged there are things that we can do better, Becky Payne there are things that we are really doing well, and there is a lot of work to be done. After everyone went home and the dust settled, I felt energized and excited about the possibilities for the Ayrshire breed. We spent considerable time evaluating finances, and not just the current financial position of the Association. Current milk prices, cull prices, market trends and much more entered into the discussion. We worried about how some of our members are coping with drought conditions and lack of feed. We debated over program rules, fee schedules, capturing more registrations and transfers, and so much more, with the ultimate outcome being how we can guide the Association and the Ayrshire cow to thrive in an uncertain dairy economy. One of the greatest changes in the coming year will be with the classification program. We will continue our current arrangement with Select Sires through June 30, 2013. We are appreciative of Select Sires for their many years of service to the Ayrshire breed with our appraisal program. Please continue to schedule your classification with Select Sires for the next six months just as you have in the past. Effective July 1st, we will be working with Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association classification system. We will continue to use the same linear scale for type traits and follow our own rules. Breeders will receive a print-out with final scores while the evaluator is on the farm. We are very excited about this opportunity and will be announcing more details on the schedule soon. The ABA will conduct a classification workshop during the National Ayrshire Convention later this year so that our breeders will have the opportunity to learn more about this program. The ABA announced changes in the REWARDS program for 2013. Registrations will continue to be free with the program as long as animals are registered by four months of age. The primary reason for this change is efficiency. This will help even out the flow of registration activity throughout the year while keeping registrations on the farm current. If you are on a quarterly automated DHI report registration system, this change will not affect you. If you use PC-Dart computer software with your production records, the ABA can access information from the dairy records processing center and prepare an Excel spreadsheet where the owner can add the name and identification for the calf to the file and send it back to the ABA. Contact the ABA office to enroll in this easy registration process. Five ownership transfers per REWARDS herd are included with the program fee. Additional transfers throughout the enrollment period are at a reduced rate. The ABA’s fee schedule was reviewed in depth. Many of the fees had not increased in over five years. After considerable discussion, a modest fee increase was made in most program areas. The most significant area of increase is for overaged females and males. A complete schedule is printed on page 23, is available from the ABA office or online at www.usayrshire. com. A hot topic for a portion of our breeders has been the upcoming national show change. As you know, beginning in 2013, the unfresh fall yearling class will be eliminated from all U.S. national shows and the All-American contest. Please note that this change only affects national shows, not regional, state and local shows. Animals in this class are two years old, or very close, by the time they show in national shows and are often not bred. Some breeders have come forward and voiced their concerns about this decision, so I want to provide some background information for you. There was considerable discussion, on several different occasions, and research done before the decision to eliminate the fall yearling heifer class was reached. It was brought to the directors by the Show Committee, who unanimously passed it in their own committee meeting. After further evaluation, the Board of Directors voted unanimously in December 2011 to eliminate the fall yearling heifer class from all fall national shows and the All-American contest beginning with the 2013 show season. Since the decision was made, several members have asked the board to reconsider their action. The members’ concerns were considered. On two separate occasions since that time, the Board of Directors has voted unanimously to stand by their decision. Another important point to make is that many members have also come forward to voice their approval for the action taken by the board. Continued on Page 12

AYRSHIRE O U T H Hello again! If your winter’s been anywhere as cold as mine so far, you’ll know why I’m happy to be headed back to college in a few days…I’m 90 miles away from having to get up early and go do chores in the cold. As much as I love being home, I certainly don’t miss the so-cold-youreyelashes-freeze weather when I’m at school. I don’t envy my siblings at all, even if they do get to call ‘dibs’ on the new heifer calves as they’re born. I figure it’s an even trade for having warm feet. To our Ayrshire youth: Have you worked on your record books yet? If you’re lucky, you might be able to work a trade out with your parents: Tell them you’ll work hard on your record book if they go out and do chores. You get an evening in from the cold, and we get another youth book entry! You can visit www. usayrshire.com/youth.html to download your application if you need a new copy. Don’t forget that we also have a great scholarship program for our older youth as well. It’s definitely worth your time to fill out the application! As the new year starts, I want to remind everyone to work hard in school and keep up with your studies. Older youth, fill out those scholarship applications. I know they stink, I really do, but as a person who didn’t have to pay a dime out of pocket for her first year of school, I’m telling you…it’s worth the few hours of tedium. dmund Els from South Africa had his work cut out for him as over 100 top quality Ayrshires paraded across the green shavings at the Southern National Ayrshire Show in Louisville, Kentucky on November 6, 2012. Champion heifers came from two very strong classes. Taking top heifer honors was the first place Intermediate Yearling, Don Haven Laro Tina, the 2011 Honorable Mention All American Winter Calf owned by Mike and Julie Hemp and Steve McDonald, of Chebanse, Illinois. This Laro daughter also stood third at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s International Show in Madison, Wisconsin. Reserve Junior Champion honors went to the winning winter heifer calf, Mill Valley Supreme Lorraine. She is a Mill Valley Sakic Supreme daughter bred and owned by Mill Valley Farms of Sidney, Ohio. The Grand Champion banner went to the 91-point Intermediate Champion and firstplace Senior three-year-old cow, Muellers M Legue Caylee owned by Halls Ayrshires of Cushing, Oklahoma. This Major Legue daughter has 14, 470M 486F and 439P in 365 days at 2-07. Her dam is the Excellent 2007 Honorable Mention Junior All American Jr. Three-Year-Old Harmony Claretta. The Reserve Grand Champion award went to the 92-point first place five-yearold and Senior Champion, Mowrys Wilton Trista. This previous All American and Jr. All American has a current record at 4-3 365D 29.460M 995F 942P, sired by Wilton and is backed an 85-point Dinomire dam. She is owned by Jared Helsley of Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania.

Designer Genes Olivia, owned by Seth Whiting, of Slippery Rock, PA was also part of the winners circle as Reserve Intermediate Champion. This winning Sr. two-year-old was also first at the MidAtlantic National show. Mill Valley Rosels Ginger, shown and owned by Mill Valley Farm of Sidney, Ohio took Reserve Champion Honors. This first-place six-year-old was also Grand Champion of the Junior Show. Impacting One Life At A Time

id you ever think you’d see the day when a camp full of adolescent girls and Ayrshires would add up to the experience of a lifetime? It has for Audrey Gay Rodgers of Belleville, Penn. In an era where we’re bombarded with coined phrases like ‘think outside of the box’, ‘niche markets’, ‘make a difference’, and ‘do what you love, love what you do’; many of us have given up on the idea of living our dream. When you meet Gay Rodgers, you just know she’s found her calling. She is an insightful, energetic woman who loves life. Gay credits reading the book, Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow, as a moment of truth for her. When she pondered over the things she loves in life, she came up with Ayrshire cows, summer camp and traveling. From this inspiration, Gay decided to turn her farm and passion into a camp for girls. Each summer, she offers three, twoweek sessions for girls aged 8-14, with a maximum of 30 campers per session. After age 14, girls can extend their experience at Hameau Farm by becoming a counselor-intraining, or a full-fledged counselor after they turn 21. Gay has found that a 4:1 ratio of campers to counselors works best. The counselors-in-training work for one session each summer, while the counselors attend all three sessions plus a week of training. Gay loves to travel and seek out different cultural experiences. One monumental excursion resulted in the name for her farm. While on a trip to France, Gay visited the Hameau de la Reine, a farm built for Marie Antoinette in 1783. The French translation of Hameau is “a cluster of buildings in a

rural setting”. The fond m e m o r i e s and spirit of community she felt from that visit has yielded her very own Hameau Farm. Hameau Farm is preparing for Audrey Gay Rodgers its 18th season of camp, having opened in 1996. The campers’ livestock experience includes working with Ayrshire calves and heifers, pigs, goats and sheep. Each session has a theme, and there are six different chore groups that rotate so that each girl participates in a multitude of ventures on the farm. A typical camp day includes morning and evening chores, farm activities, cabin clean-up, group meetings, free time, and shared meals. Other activities include arts and crafts, canoeing, roller skating, bowling, attending Amish markets, hiking in Penn’s Cave, swimming, cook-outs and more. Each session ends in a grand finale farm show where the girls exhibit animals for their family and friends. This working farm consists of 110 acres while a neighboring farm produces all of the hay. The goats are borrowed from a friend for the duration of the camp sessions. The sheep trace back to the Jacob breed in the United Kingdom. Gay’s interest in the Ayrshire breed started as a girl with her father, John Rodgers’ Plum-Bottom Ayrshire herd. Gay’s first priority is the kids and teaching them life skills in their day-to-

day experiences on the farm. A brochure promoting the camp quotes, “Staring down the wet nostrils of a half-ton cow without the benefit of a fence could put fear in the heart of many a novice farm hand, whether eight or thirty-eight. But what’s to fear?” The girls are encouraged to get out of their comfort zones while at camp. They openly discuss a multitude of topics, and often agriculture and animals are in the mix. Gay says her camp days are filled with lots of singing, chit chat and giggles. She loves every minute! Ayrshires are vital to the camp’s success . . . Several years ago, Gay decided to build her Ayrshire herd and make it the focus of her camp culture. With her father’s input, she bought animals sired by proven bulls such as Trident, Soldier, Paragon, Shipley, Lennon, Wilton, Captain, Modem, Poker and Raven. Gay is currently milking close to 20 Ayrshires, with the majority of them just completing their first lactations. Her intention is to keep 20 milking cows and work towards marketing genetics and Ayrshire products. After her father’s herd dispersed, she maintained the Plum-Bottom prefix. John continues his involvement in the breed by helping with the mating and grazing needs of the herd, as well as other philosophical input. In addition, Gay employs Kyle Kulp full-time. The herd is managed on an extensive rotational grazing system from mid-March through early winter when snow covers the ground. While the Rodgers’ rely on getting their primary source of protein from grazing, they do utilize a 12 percent Continued on Page 10

She participated as a camper for three years; and then in her fourth year, was able to travel with the group to Scotland where she has great memories of visiting an Ayrshire herd, castles and more. Since then, she stayed on as a counselor while working towards her degree in architecture. Her favorite part of the camp is working with the animals. Amye Gulezion, 16, has grown up with the program. She originally learned of Hameau Farm at a camp fair five years ago. She started out as a camper, moved up to a counselor-in-training, and then asked if she could work in the barn. She likes the cows and milking, feeding, and watering, and earned the title of ‘barn apprentice’ for her efforts. Amye lives just 15 minutes from Washington D.C., and her parents both work for the Smithsonian Museum. From Winter 2013

How do we “enhance” an animal’s performance in the herd?

he goal of every dairy producer is enhanced performance of all animal’s in the milking herd. The very foundation of this premise begins at birth of the calf. Recent studies are indicating that early life nutrient intake – how the calf is fed prior to weaning - has long-term implications on future productivity and profitability. In this article we will focus on “accelerated calf growth” as well as early calf health to enhance our animal’s performance in the milking herd. The long-term benefits of feeding a highquality, high-protein diet to calves will bring both health as well as financial revenues for the dairy producer. Two main goals are: 1. Provide high-quality colostrum right away. This is an obvious statement. It is no secret that the foundation of any calfrearing program is good quality, ample amounts of colostrums fed in a timely manner. Research shows that calves that do not receive s sufficient amount of high quality colostrum in a timely fashion will experience lower average daily gains (ADG), delayed time to first calving and subsequently produce less milk and milk fat during their first lactation. 2. Provide more than the minimum requirements. By feeding calves at a nutrient level above maintenance requirements, we are setting the calf up for a better lifetime of milk production. Supplying a high-energy, high-protein diet through liquid feeds (milk/milk replacer) as well as starter grain enables the calf to reach her growth potential and herd goals of doubling weight by 8 weeks of age. Following the above suggestions can result in positive and profitable results. Studies by Dr. Van Amburgh of Cornell have found that calves fed an accelerated growth program produce an additional 1,700 lbs. of milk in the first lactation! Even in today’s age of increased feed costs taken into account, this increase in production can translate to an additional $231 per animal of financial advantage for the dairy producer (at $18/cwt milk). Looking back at the US dairy industry over the last century, economics and sanitary considerations have led producers Winter 2013

away from allowing calves to be raised by suckling the cow. Economically the incentive has been to wean calves as quickly as possible (without sacrificing health) from more expensive alternatives such as milk or milk replacers to feeding less expensive concentrate-based feeds (starters) and forages. It has been shown that health of the calves consistently improved once the calves were weaned from liquid feeds. This is most likely due to the extensive detoxifying ability of the rumen, the “bulking effects” of solid feeds in the intestines, and substantial improvements in energy balance. Another benefit of early weaning was a considerable decrease in labor requirements (as well as an improvement of mentality of the person feeding the bucket calves) when calves no longer had to be fed individually and were housed in groups. The first milk replacer was developed in 1951 and before that it was common for farmers to feed considerably more milk (as much as 4 qts./feeding = 8 qts./day) than is common practice today. The current convention of raising calves in North America has worked reasonably well while allowing producers to wean healthy calves by 5 weeks of age at minimal costs. We will call this the conventional method of limit feeding calves. Unfortunately, the dairy industry in the US has become accustomed and almost comfortable with an unacceptably high rate of heifer mortality (10.8%; National Animal Health Monitoring System, 2003). Therefore the increase savings of “limit” feeding calves and weaning earlier to decrease the amount spent on expensive milk replacers will be lost on veterinary expenses and treatment costs as well as decreased production later in life of those animals. Could feeding an accelerated program dramatically reduce the mortality rates and expenses related to treatments? Let’s look at the accelerated feeding programs. The main principal is the rate of milk replacer feeding (2 to 2.5 lb of powder) which is approximately twice that of conventional recommendations (1 to 1.25lb of powder). The milk replacer must also contain greater amounts of crude protein (CP), similar to the amount in whole milk solids, in order to meet the amino acid requirements of the rapidly

growing bone and muscle. Therefore the goal of the accelerated program is to capitalize on the rapid and efficient early lean growth potential of young calves, allowing for greater frame growth without fattening. The target rate of growth will obviously greater than the conventional and may reach 2 lb per day by the end of the second week. This is not to say that under exceptional management practices calves on conventional programs might reach or approach that growth rate by the third or fourth week as starter intake increases. Calves that are allowed to suckle their mothers typically consume 6 to 10 meals per day and may consume 16 to 24% of their body weight (BW) as milk after 3 to 4 weeks of age (Hafez and Lineweaver, 1968). A study done in Canada showed that calves left with their dams for 14d after birth were almost 29lb heavier at 14d of age than calves removed from the dam on d 1 and limit-fed milk (conventional feeding) whole milk at 10% of BW daily (Flower and Weary, 2001). Therefore, what I have been referring to as “accelerated growth” is actually biological normal growth. Isn’t this what Mother Nature had intended for these animals? Let me touch on two non-issues with accelerated calf growth that producers may have. Some producers may have concerns with increased scouring of calves as well as the myth of negative effects on mammary development with the accelerated program. 1. Increased scouring and unthriftiness of calves. Feeding more milk or more of a high-quality milk replacer does not cause scouring (Mylrea, 1966; Huber et al., 1984; Nocek and Braund, 1986). The occurrence of scours, unless a poorquality milk replacer containing damaged ingredients is fed, depends more on the pathogenic microorganisms in the calves environment (Roy, 1980) and the degree of environmental stress on calves (Bagley, 2001). 2. Negative effects on mammary development and subsequent milk production, or on reproductive development. Danish researchers have recently found NO evidence for effects of high growth rate during the first 2 months on mammary development (Sejrsen et al., 1998, 2000). If growth rates of 2 lb/d on starter are considered healthy and not a problem for subsequent milk production, there is no reason to expect that growth rates of that magnitude on milk replacer should have any different! Research from Michigan State University has shown that improved early nutrition actually stimulated mammary tissue development (Brown et al., 2002). Finally let’s get down to the nuts and bolts of the issue, economics. Continued on page 22 19

The total rearing costs are similar between the programs. However the accelerated program leads earlier age at first calving as well as additional milk in first lactation. Bottom line – greater production capability = increased return on investment! This leads to early age at first calving which relates to my previous article and the benefits of calving animals before 24 months of age. This is a current hot topic but once one sits down and thinks about the theory behind it, doesn’t it make sense. Humans try to improve on many things, but Mother Nature has been doing things right for a lot longer.

Nearly one thousand more transfers than the previous year, or an increase of 11% were recorded, which indicated the strong demand for Ayrshires throughout the country. In fact, in only one previous year, had more animals been transferred. Further evidence was the fact that during the year, more than 14,000 registrations were recorded in the office of the national association, equaling those of 1936.

Windrow Silver’s Lucinda, 1st prize three-year-old cow, Senior & Grand Champion and best udder of show, 1962 International Dairy Show – Windrow Farms, Metamora, Michigan One of the interesting highlights of the Ayrshire show was the production records of Judge Delbert Kingston’s winning Dairy Herd. It is further proof, dispelling the misconception that show ring winners do not produce. This strong dairy herd class was won by Windrow Farm with an outstanding group, whose actual average production was 15,453 lbs. of milk and 700 lbs. of fat. Oak Ridge Stock Farm’s ad in the January 15, 1963 Ayrshire Digest lamented a challenge. The headline read, “If You Had 15 AllAmerican Nominations and had space for only 7 pictures – Well, it’s a happy problem.” La Franchi Bros. solution was to list the 15 nominations with their placings and feature the photos for five animals and a Junior Get of Sire and Senior Get of Sire.
