Genomics Explained By Adam Oswalt, Select Sires, Inc. Ayrshire Sire Analyst

W

e are getting more information regarding genomic evaluations effecting Ayrshire animals. I’m taking this opportunity to give everyone a brief update on what we’re observing now with the completion of our Ayrshire bulls being genomic tested. In regards to NM$, the average difference between each bulls’ traditional evaluation and genomic evaluation was +7NM$. The largest difference after the genomic information was added was +109NM$. The largest decrease after the genomic evaluation was -68NM$. This difference from the traditional evaluation or parent average is a main component when analyzing an animal’s genomic evaluation. Animals with a boosted genomic evaluation are the progeny that are predicted to pass on more favorable traits. Finding the better calf of the full siblings will be the key advantage when genomic testing your Ayrshire calves. Selecting the better animal from physical attributes is just as important, but now with genomic predictions the better genetic calf can be discovered. Genomics allows us to see what’s on the inside and add to our evaluation of what we see on the outside. When trying to determine which progeny to invest the most time and money, this is a huge advantage. For females, the investment might be whether to flush or to use sexed semen. For males, it’s whether or not he should go into AI. Please take a look at the simple color diagram in figure 1. Each colored bar represents the genes of a grandparent in this two-generation pedigree. The yellow and green grandparent did not equally transmit 50% of their genes to the next generation. With the use of genomics, we can now quantify this in actual terms and better explain a truer gene transmission from one generation to another. The yellow grandparent had a profound effect on the

next generation; and in looking at the second generation, you can again see the dominance of that maternal line. Equally interesting is how some genetic lines have little to no influence characterized by the green grandparent. Once you get to the second generation (F2) of this pedigree, you can see how that green grandparent no longer had a genetic effect on its grand progeny. While this color schematic is overly simplified, the point is that not all parents contribute genetic information equally to their progeny. We are also learning what to expect in reliability gains from traditional to genomic evaluations. Unfortunately, the gains in reliability will be low for Ayrshires especially when compared to Holstein and Jersey genomic evaluations. Genomics are powered by data from proven Ayrshires that have been genomic tested. This group is referred to as the reference population

and is composed dominantly by 658 North American sires. Please see figure 2 which represents the four breed reference groups over time. The Ayrshire reference population is substantially smaller resulting in reliability gains around 20% of what Holstein young animals receive. An increase of the reference population will gradually raise reliability gains; and over time, the genomic predictions of today can be validated with data of tomorrow. This can be a slow essential process in the foundational period.

Figure 3 lists nine Select Sires young sires and compares the traditional type (PTAT) evaluation to the genomic type evaluation. Also included are the reliabilities for each evaluation. As you can see, the largest gain was 9% in reliability and the group averaged an 8% increase. Since the reliability change is small, we don’t expect large variations from the traditional evaluation. However, this 8% in reliability does allow for more confidence in our expectation for each bull. Another advantage to genomics is allowing breeders more confidence during the selection process. As selection accuracy increases, genetic progress accelerates. Going forward, Ayrshire breeders should be innovative and alert. How genomic evaluations are used will ultimately be up to everyone; but at the moment, it is a very small tool with powerful possibilities. Please watch for future updates in the next Ayrshire Digest. August proofs will certainly bring more useful data from the realm of Ayrshire genomics!

Distinguished Service Award - Presented by Executive Director, Becky Payne at the National Convention The Ayrshire Breeders’ Association Distinguished Service Award is being presented to a very special Ayrshire family. To those of us who have been blessed to know them and visit with them over the years, we have all experienced that special hospitality and feeling of friendship that is unique to this family. Our Distinguished Service recipients are siblings who come from a family dedicated to service – to each other, to their community and to the Ayrshire breed. It is my pleasure to recognize the Fenton Family of Winchester, Ohio, who opened their farm and their home to us for an outstanding convention tour. Today, the farm is owned in partnership between the Fenton siblings - brothers Doug, Tom Jr. and Ron, and sister JoAnn Jodrey. Their spouses and children round out the family unit. The siblings are quick to credit

their parents for their rich legacy on the farm and fondly remember their deceased brother Rick. Not only has the Fenton Family bred a successful Ayrshire herd, they have a hog operation, a commercial beef herd and Belgian horses. Haylage and tobacco crops round out the diversification on the farm. Emerald Farms has supported state, regional and national sales as buyers and sellers for many years. Exhibiting Ayrshire cattle has been an important part of the Fenton family’s lifestyle over many years, through several generations. Emerald Farms has become a mainstay at the Ohio State Fair. They started showing in 1962 and have not missed a year since. They made their debut at World Dairy Expo in 1976 and have shown every year since. Emerald Farms has participated in every Ayrshire show at the North American International Livestock Exposition. Emerald Farms is a strong supporter

of national Ayrshire Breeders’ Association programs. Family members have served on the ABA Board of Directors and different committees. Tom is currently treasurer and a director for Region 2. The entire Fenton Family is well known in all livestock circles for their friendship, spirit of camaraderie and high ethical standards. There is no better example of the meaning of service than this family. Please join me in congratulating Doug, Tom, Ron and JoAnn and their families for their Distinguished Service to the Ayrshire breed.

Industry Service Award

Pictured: (l-r) Bernie Heisner & President, Steve McDonald

- Presented by Executive Director, Becky Payne at the National Convention The Ayrshire Breeders’ Association is pleased to present an Industry Service Award to a person whose career has impacted the lives of Ayrshire breeders and dairymen across the nation. In the past 42 years his influence on Ayrshire breeders could have been through many different avenues. It could have been through his work as Extension Dairy Fieldman working with 4-H dairy youth, reading the materials that he prepared as Associate Editor of Hoard’s Dairyman, evaluating AI promotional materials on Ayrshire sires,

or being involved with 4-H and Collegiate judging team training or competitions. You might have exhibited at a show where he served as the judge, been involved in dairy and agriculture industry organizations with him, or used the products and service of the farmer-owned cooperative that he manages. Bernie Heisner’s effect on the Ayrshire breed has been even more significant for the past several years as the association has been a tenant at COBA/Select Sires. Under his tenure as General Manager of the cooperative which serves Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico , Arizona, and Mexico, the Ohio headquarters has been transformed into a dairy center by renting space to Ohio DHI, National Dairy Shrine, Ayrshire Breeders’ Association, American Guernsey Association and Purebred Publishing. He has not only served as a landlord, but is often a mentor, sounding board, reference person and industry contact for these organizations. In addition to his responsibilities as the General Manager of the $24 million cooperative with 132 full-time employees, Bernie Heisner has worked as a leader to

bring the diverse dairy and agricultural industry together. Heisner served as board member, Finance Chair, and President of National Dairy Shrine. He was a founding board member and leader in the development of the Ohio Livestock Coalition. Bernie has also been involved with the Ohio Dairy Producers Association and Ohio Dairy Industry Forum. His dedication to the dairy industry is limitless. Those involved in dairy cattle judging at the University of Illinois and the Ohio State University have benefitted from his expertise as Bernie has coached and worked with 4-H and collegiate teams. He enjoys accompanying the teams to farms and helping them with reasons. In 1988, Heisner co-authored with Dr. Sidney Sparr the book “The Dairy Cow Today” documenting history of the U. S. dairy industry since 1960. It is my honor and pleasure to present the 2013 Ayrshire Breeder’s Association Industry Service Award to Bernie Heisner, a truly dedicated leader and friend to the Ayrshire breed.

Young Leader Award - Presented by President Elect, Doug Evans at the National Convention The 2013 Outstanding Young Leader Award is presented to a young dairyman who has made significant contributions of his time, skills and expertise to the Ayrshire breed, dairy industry and local community. His involvement with Ayrshires began when he took the sole Ayrshire in the family’s dairy herd as a project for FFA. His passion for the breed developed, and today his Ayrshire herd consists of 35 milking cows and 20 heifers. Grade Holsteins from the herd are also being cross-bred to Ayrshires. Upon his graduation from high school, he became the herdsman for his family’s Mowry Homestead Farm. The multiple breed herd currently consists of 70 milking cows and 60 heifers. All of the feed is purchased as the farm’s tillable acres are rented to another farmer. Twenty-five acres of pasture are maintained for grazing of the herd. In the past 15 years, he has developed the Ayrshire herd by purchasing foundation cows, such as Plum-Bottom Soldier Persiphene and Plum-Bottom Trident’s Paris. Embryo transfer technology has been used to develop these cow families. The herd has participated in the ABA REWARDS program for the past 10 years. Summer 2013

Our Outstanding Young Leader has been involved in Ayrshire activities on the national and state level. He has served on the ABA Show and Marketing Committees. He is a past president of the Pennsylvania Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. He helped with the national convention hosted by Pennsylvania in 2005 and has assisted with the Pennsylvania Calf Sales held each spring. He is the chairman of Mid-Atlantic/ All-American Ayrshire Futurity. Mowry is also involved in many dairy activities in his local community. He serves as a member of the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association Board and the Morrison Cove Dairy Show Committee, Assistant Dairy Superintendent Bedford Co. Fair, and is a 4-H leader. Involving his seven nieces and nephews, ranging in ages from 7 to 16, in the dairy industry is an important part of the farm operation. Currently five of them, Chase Eller, Cody Eller, Jarod Helsley, Jordan Helsley, and Josiah Mowry, are showing Ayrshires. Animals from the farm have been shown at local, state, and the Mid-Atlantic, International and Southern National Ayrshire shows. Several championship banners and All-American and Junior AllAmerican awards have been garnered.

Pictured: (l-r) Jason with fiance, Holly Zembower

The recipient of this year’s award can be described as a hard-working, dedicated Ayrshire breeder and leader. Next spring he will be married to Holly Zembower. It is my pleasure to present to you the 2013 Outstanding Young Leader Award winner - Jason Mowry, Roaring Springs, PA.

QUEEN’S Corner Hello fellow Ayrshire enthusiasts! My name is Ashlie Hardy. I am 19 years old and from Farmington, Maine. I am the daughter of Henry and Teresa Hardy, and have been born and raised on the Hardy Farm. I am honored and blessed to be able to introduce myself as your 2013-2014 National Ayrshire Queen! It has always been a hope and dream of mine to be able to hold this position. I can still remember my first Ayrshire convention back when it was in Vermont. I could barely stay awake during the banquet to see all the pretty Queen contestants, and as soon as it was over, I fell asleep on my mom’s lap. Since then, lots of things have changed for me. I have started breeding my own Ayrshires, and even though I have had bull after bull, I will not give up. I plan to continue breeding high quality Ayrshires. I want to have powerful, stylish cows that will still milk for me. To

O

help me achieve this goal I enrolled in Farm Management and Technology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. I realize it is a Canadian school, but it costs me so much less to go to school there than in the states. So therefore I can graduate with very little debt and be able to get started buying, selling and breeding my herd. I currently own five registered Ayrshires, and had my first Excellent cow this year. I am so very excited about my cows and breeding the next generations. I hope during my reign as Queen I can help pass on some of my excitement and passion. I hope that I get the opportunity to meet many of you this year and build relationships based on and around our beautiful breed. I hope for all of you that show that you have a wonderful year of showing, and I hope to see you at some of the shows. In addition for all of you that do not show, I wish you a

prosperous year with Ayrshires and hope you are blessed with many heifers. If ever you have questions or just want to connect and get to know me, please feel free to contact me at hardyayrshires@gmail.com or on Facebook. ~ Ashlie

Ohio National Youth Heifer Show

n Saturday morning, June 29th, National Convention attendees headed to the Clinton County Fairgrounds to watch the “Honoring the Legends of Ohio National Heifer Show.” Youth from as far away as Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Maryland, Kentucky and of course Ohio had brought in their heifers earlier that week. Balancing between Convention youth activities and taking care of their heifers was made much easier thanks to Jimmy Barlow of Scottsville, Kentucky, who handled show string responsibilities for the youth during convention activities. Approximately 40 heifers paraded across the shavings that morning in front of the judge, Michael Creek from Palmyra Farms in Hagerstown, Maryland. A previous member of the Cornell judging team and currently an active breeder and judge, Creek praised the youth for the quality they were presenting throughout the show. After placing all the classes, the winners paraded back into the ring for the championship class in front of a large crowd of spectators. Creek pulled out the fancy winter calf, exhibited by Garrett Hageman of Sidney, Ohio; the big, strong, close-to-calving fall yearling of McKenzie Stanford’s from Cushing, Oklahoma; and the long, stylish winter yearling exhibited by Kristin Allen of Cecil, Wisconsin, for his champion contenders. Creek then named Hall’s Griggs Shazzy, owned by Allen as the Junior Champion of the show citing her length of neck, breed character, strength, style and width that carried all the way through her rib as the top pick for him

that day. He then chose the close-up fall yearling, Hall’s Dozer Ritzy, of Stanford’s as the Reserve Junior Champion for her strength and size. The Winter Calf, MillValley Jester’s Fireball of Hageman’s was named Honorable Mention for having the best feet and legs of the show as well as being more correct from end to end. The Best Bred & Owned award went to Hall’s Dozer Ritzy, bred and owned by McKenzie Stanford. The Reserve Best Bred & Owned was awarded to the Winter Calf of Hageman’s. Creek then judged four tough classes of showmanship, beginning with four young pee-wee showmen under the age of 8: Kelly Hawvermale, Meradith Hageman, Logan Topp, all of Ohio, and Gavin Valentine of MD. Garrett Hageman of Sidney, Ohio, won the junior showmanship class out of seven competitors. Trevor Greiwe, of Sidney, Ohio, took home the intermediate showmanship honors from a class of 12. Topping the senior showmanship was Tanner Topp of Wooster, Ohio against eight showmen.

Scholarship Recipient Hello, my name is Leah Caverly. I am the nineteenyear-old daughter of Donna Haynes Caverly and the late Edgar “EC” Caverly. I will soon start my second year at the University of New Hampshire’s Thompson School of Applied Science, where I am majoring in Applied Animal Science Dairy Management. I keep myself busy at UNH! During my freshman year I joined the Wildcat Marching Band, Beast of the East Pep Band, UNH Dairy Club and Sigma Alpha, the professional agricultural sorority. In Dairy Club, I was a member of the sale committee that organized the Blue and White Classic, UNH Dairy Club’s calf and heifer sale which was held in March. Last year I was also a member of Maine’s 4-H Dairy Judging Team and Captain of Maine’s 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Team. Both teams competed at Eastern States Exposition and did very well. The Quiz Bowl team also went on to compete at the North American International Livestock Exposition, where we finished third. I currently own four Ayrshires along with a Holstein calf that I purchased at the UNH Dairy Club’s calf sale. Last summer

my first bred and owned Ayrshire heifer was born. I established my own prefix and named her Robins-Nest First Lady. I look forward to showing her as a Summer Yearling this year. I show at the Skowhegan State Fair, Maine 4-H State Dairy Show and Eastern States Exposition, “The Big E”. Last year my Sr. Two Year Old, Caverly Farms 1790 SPBH Jayne, was Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Junior Show at The Big E and was nominated in the Junior All-American contest. Jayne was also nominated Junior All-American when she was a Fall Calf. Last fall both Jayne and First Lady’s Dam, Wilshore Outback Last Lady, were classified VG 88 during their first lactations. This past year has been pretty exciting for Robin’s Nest Ayrshires! I look forward to more “firsts” and exciting milestones in the future! I will graduate with my Associates’ Degree at the end of this school year. Eventually, I want to operate my own dairy farm breeding and milking a herd of Ayrshires. I would like to thank the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association and the National Youth Committee for making this scholarship available. I am truly honored to be this year’s recipient.

Vermont - a good place to buy good Ayrshires...

To encourage registry in the breed we need to make it easier and more affordable. DNA test requirements on barnyard bulls is not a step in that direction, and completely unnecessary, I might add.

Visitors always welcome at:
