nother World Dairy Expo is history and all Brown Swiss breeders should be very proud of the outstanding Swiss show. Congratulations to all of the exhibitors for putting their very best on display for the world to see. The Swiss show continues to grow, not only in numbers, but also in quality. When one watches all of the shows

and witnesses the ones that have juniors showing within the breed show, you should be very proud of our young people showing Brown Swiss. Many could have been shown by adults, but when you watch a young person on the halter giving it their best and seeing many place high in the class, you know the future is bright. It was a great show for many reasons. Congratulations to all!

Motion passed at the most recent Board Conference call that will go into effect January 1, 2016. All accounts over 90 days will not have work processed until the remaining balance is paid in full. This includes not only Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders’ Association balances but also Brown Swiss Enterprises/Progressive Sires balances. After asking other associations their policies for aged receivables, this seems to be the solution for BSA, BSE/Progressive Sires going forward. There will be notices sent with all statements in November and in December as a reminder of the policy change. Also, as was stated last month in this section, I believe everything has to be done to NOT raise the pricing in the fee schedule for at least another year or more. Your Board of Directors have not made across the board increases to the fee schedule for the last five years while other associations have. This has been made possible by you, the breeders, supporting your association’s programs and keeping your registrations up to date. THANK YOU! There are deadlines approaching for the All-Americans and National Bell Ringer Contests. You will want to make sure you read the entire entry form information carefully as there have been changes from years previous. We encourage all to participate in these contests. It’s also a great way to promote your animals to a broader audience not only by entering the contest but also by advertising in the upcoming issues of the Bulletin that the contests are printed in. Until next month, ~David

t was a beautiful fall day as exhibitors brought their heifers to the ring for the start of the International Brown Swiss show on September 30 to parade across the royal blue colored shavings. Judge Paul Trapp of Taylor, Wisconsin, and his associate Tom Foss of Cambridge, Minnesota, served as the officials for the two-day event. Approximately 350 total head were exhibited in Madison, Wisconsin, during the event. A very strong heifer show ensued on Thursday evening with 174 calves and yearlings gracing the tanbark. Two heifers sorted themselves to the top for the judge’s choices of Junior Champion. Judge Trapp commented: “Three heifers stood out from

6

the pack for us today. That Fall Calf with that big deep rib and that Spring Yearling with loads of style and the Fall Yearling a very, very complete heifer with her maturity.” After tapping Twin Elms VU Java Bree, the first-place Fall Yearling as his Junior Champion and Cutting Edge A Ruby as his Reserve, Judge Trapp continued with his comments. “It’s close and when it’s close I like to go with maturity. And this Fall Yearling has dairy strength, is a modern heifer, and straight and strong naturally and a very fitting champion. She goes over the Fall Calf with a hint more dairyness; she’s longer and cleaner through the neck than the Fall Calf. The Fall Calf over the Spring

Yearling is straighter and stronger over the topline, especially in the loin area.” Exhibited by Blessing Farms of Fort Wayne, Indiana, the Junior Champion is a September 2013 Java daughter out of an All-American nominated dam. She was bred by Mark Huebner of Iowa. The Reserve Junior Champion Cutting Edge A Ruby was purchased this summer in the National Convention Sale by John and Bonnie Ayars and Dr. Kenny Manion of Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Sired by Cutting Edge W Austin ET *TM, she is backed by a 90-point Party Boy dam with records to 30,380M and All-American honors. The Honorable Mention Spring Yearling, M &

M Total Shotski is sired by Total and bred and owned by Matt, Megan, Jake and Levi Stuessel of Alma Center, Wisconsin. Elite Dairy of Copake, New York, was again named Premier Breeder & Exhibitor of the Heifer Show. The following morning, Judges Trapp and Foss had an additional 170-plus cows to sort through as exhibitors from across the nation and Canada paraded the best of the best before them. Outstanding classes of young cows didn’t make the job easy, but in the end the judges chose the Senior TwoYear-Old as their choice for Intermediate Champion. “For Intermediate Champion, it’s no secret that we like the Senior TwoYear-Old. It’s no secret she makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. She’s long and clean [with] tremendous dairy strength. For me that’s what a Senior Two-YearOld should look like in the Brown Swiss breed - great open rib design and a fabulous udder with great veination. She goes over the Senior Three-Year-Old that will be Reserve. The Senior Two is just a little cleaner through the head and neck. Reserve over Honorable Mention is the advantage to mammary and two calves over that Junior Two-Year-Old that has so much potential.” Cutting Edge T Delilah is owned by Kyle Barton of Ancramdale, New York. The 89-point All-American nominated first-prize Senior Two-Year-Old was also Intermediate and eventual Grand Champion of the Junior Show. Having previously won at Harrisburg as well, this Cutting Edge Thunder *TM daughter is out of a ‘2E92’ All-American dam. Reserve Intermediate Champion honors went to Bittersweet

Legacy Daisy Dukes, bred and exhibited by Troy and Lindsey Nevil of New Glarus, Wisconsin. The 90-point Legacy daughter is out of a Very Good Etvei *TM dam backed by a ‘2E92’ granddam. Top Acres Garbro S Wish ET was the first-place Junior Two-Year-Old and Honorable Mention Intermediate Champion. She is owned by Larry and Jennifer Meyer of Chilton, Wisconsin. Senior and Grand Champion honors went to Brown Heaven Glenn Fantasy, bred and owned by Ferme Brown Heaven of Vercheres, Quebec, Canada. Reserve Senior and Grand Champion was Top Acres Supreme Wizard ET, bred and owned by Wayne E. Sliker of St. Paris, Ohio. “Like I said, when these Five-Year-Olds came in the ring they just lit us up. We both love these cows, they are tremendous cows, great representatives of the breed, tremendous uddered cows. This Senior Two-YearOld will have her day in the sun and she had a great day in the sun today.” The Canadian Five-Year-Old is a returning winner to the colored shavings with the 2014 All-American 4-Year-Old title and first-place 4-Year-Old at Expo in 2014. Sired by Schamaun BS Gordon Glenn ET and out of multiple generations of Excellent and Very Good dams in Canada, she has production records over 30,000M as well. The Reserve Grand Champion and second-place Five-Year-Old is a ‘2E93’ AllAmerican Supreme daughter with multiple records over 25,000M and 1,450F. From the ‘World of Whizzbang,’ she and her sister were also the winning Produce of Dam. The Intermediate Champion, Cutting Edge

T Delilah, was named Honorable Mention for owner Kyle Barton. The Total Performance and Nasco Type & Production Award winner was Jonlee Secret Langwathby, owned by Dalton Freeman of Bremen, Indiana. The Cutting Edge Secret ET *TM ‘EX91’ daughter has 4-00 300D 3X 40,820M 5.1% 2,080F 3.5% 1,444P and was a 2014 All-American nominated 4-Year-Old. Ohio won the State Herd banner with multiple high-placing winners. Random Luck Farm of Darlington, Wisconsin, took home the Premier Breeder banner and Elite Dairy of Copake, New York, was awarded the Premier Exhibitor banner. Old Mill WDE Supreme ET was once again the Premier Sire of the show. Spring Heifer Calves (32) 1. Topp-View Megatron Verity, Keaton & Kinley Topp, Botkins, OH; 2. Shiloh Dairy ~ working on the total package

S

By Robin Alden

hiloh Dairy is a 2100-cow dairy operation in Brillion, Wisconsin, just south of Green Bay. Amongst the several thousands of Holstein cattle, you also will find 35 milking head of top-quality Brown Swiss, the favorites of Cathy Speirs, who co-owns and manages the dairy with her husband, Gordon. Cathy calls the Brown Swiss her “pet project,” as she is deeply interested in genomics and spends hours examining pedigrees. “We are painfully aware of inbreeding within the Swiss breed,” said Cathy, who will write out pedigrees with a pencil going back generations checking for linebreeding. The Speirs have been in Wisconsin for only 12 years, but they are the fourth generation to own the dairy. Before moving to the United States, Shiloh Dairy operated in Alberta, Canada. Gordon had always wanted a large dairy, but Canadian quotas made it virtually impossible to expand. Wisconsin was the logical choice for the Speirs, as Gordon’s family had vacationed there a few times, and they appreciated the dairy friendly state. Their first year in the United States, the Speirs milked about 700 cows, and have tripled in size since, thanks to the American business climate. However, Cathy hopes the U.S. government will get behind food producers even more to help enhance this climate. All of the animals owned by Shiloh Dairy live on site, which creates a large demand on infrastructure and land. The Speirs use a double-36 parallel parlor. They are also particularly proud of their state-of-theart manure handling system. This system is capable of recycling water so it is potable. At this time, however, the water is used for the washing of the sand bedding so it can be reused. Contrary to popular belief, Shiloh Dairy proves that a large farm is very sustainable. “Our economy of scale allows us to put in these systems, which then help us improve the environment,” said Cathy. This “economy of scale” also allows the Speirs to have a large staff on site. Their two sons, Travis and Tyler, are major employees of the dairy. Travis, who has always had an affinity for cows, works as the herd manager; Tyler, a trained mechanic, is the operations manager. Cathy calls these positions “instinctual” and what they were born for. Their daughter, Megan, is studying for her MBA in Scotland. In addition,

14

the Shiloh Dairy employs 36 dedicated workers, including a safety and inspection manager who ensures their compliance to various inspections. The first Brown Swiss were purchased approximately 10 years ago. One of the first employees at the Wisconsin site had a small Brown Swiss herd, and the Speirs fell in love with their beautiful looks as well as their calm personalities. Their herd has steadily grown ever since with a significant contribution due to an embryo-sharing agreement made with Sunshine Genetics several years ago. Many of the Speirs’ best animals come from this contract with Sunshine, including Sun-Made SD Wonder Buffy ET, the dam of Shiloh Brookings Cadence ET *TM, and Sun-Made SD Wondr Brenda ET, the Junior Three Protein Leader in her second lactation and dam of Shiloh Jackson Brady ET *TM. They also have a couple of crossbred animals who they plan on bringing into the Brown Swiss herd book thanks to the Identity Enrollment Program. Cathy’s priorities lie more in production and genomics than in showring type. “My first priority has to be productive, healthy cows,” says Cathy. She enjoys working with numbers and analyzing matings. Her second priority is then, therefore, genomics. “I love genomics – you never know what you get until you pull the hair,” said Cathy. She believes, though, that all three factors can work together – that high genomic animals generally get their numbers by being the “total package” and possessing good type, health and production traits. Essentially, the breeding philosophy is to focus on what will allow an animal to live a long and healthy life, while being mindful of genomics – and if an animal is showworthy, that’s just an added bonus.

Current bulls the Speirs use include Dundee, Anibal, and Kannon. Cathy also names Biver as a great outcross bull. Some of the favorite young cows in the herd include Payssli and Jackson two-year-olds. The Speirs don’t totally ignore type matings, though, as Cathy mentions a fancy Richard calf just born to a ‘VG’ Vigor dam. Shiloh Dairy is also a contributor to AI with bulls such as Shiloh Jackson Brady ET *TM (+150PPR +1168M GPTA) and Shiloh Brookings Cadence ET *TM (+162PPR), the former #1 genomic bull of the breed, and sire of many of the top genomic young sires of the moment. Cathy has several goals for her Swiss cows. She plans on increasing their numbers as well as their quality by producing healthy, good-looking, high-genomic animals. They plan on increasing their own embryo transfer work and possibly looking into marketing their own animals more. In general, the Speirs hope that Shiloh Dairy will continue contributing to the Brown Swiss breed as well as the industry by keeping up-to-date with advances on the farm and advances to Brown Swiss genetics.

he World Premier Sale was once again held in conjunction with the International Brown Swiss Show at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. The sale began the afternoon of October 1, 2015, after an impressive show. The sale continues to boast deep pedigrees, show winners, top production and quality animals that keep buyers coming back to this sale year after year. The sale averaged $5,398.25 on 28 live lots to owners from 13 different states and two Canadian provinces. The sale was managed by Brown Swiss Sale Service, LLC, with Norman Magnussen managing the sale and reading pedigrees. Darrell Worden served as auctioneer and Leonard Johnson, Lee Barber, Gary Magnussen, Dave Sprengeler, Brian Garrison and Dan Gilbert served as ring men. Traci Magnussen clerked the sale. A special piece of the International Show’s winner’s circle made its way to the sale ring to start the sale. Topping the sale at $10,100 was a Winter Calf sired by Chilli Pepper out of the most recent Reserve Grand Champion of the International Show, Top Acres Supreme Wizard ET ‘2E93.’ Wizard has a pedigree lined with All-Americans and high production that goes back to Whizzbang. Top Acres HP Peppy Wyza ETV already has an AllAmerican full sister who was second in a top-notch Junior Two-Year-Old class earlier that day. She is the consignment of Wayne Sliker and Hillpoint Partners, St. Paris, Ohio, and will now make her home at Elite Dairy for Ken Main and Peter Vail, Copake, New York. Another Winter Calf sired by Chilli Pepper was struck off as the second-high seller. Brown Swiss juniors Ally and Hadleigh Jones of Glasgow, Kentucky, took home a fancy Winter Calf that was 2nd at the Indiana State Fair. Blessing Mort Osborn Penny

Coming in as the fourth-high seller was Lot 4, a stylish Fall Calf that will now be making her home in Hennessey, Oklahoma, for her new owner Tyrnie Talley. In Memoriam

Shirley Manz Bellinger of Howes Cave, New York, and Palmetto, Florida, died on August 21, 2015. Born on January 25, 1937, she was the daughter of Ella Mae (Mather) and Harry W. Manz of Schoharie, New York. Shirley was raised in Schoharie, graduating from Schoharie Central School in 1954. She then attended Hartwick College on a scholarship, graduating from its Baccalaureate Nursing Program in 1958. She married Duncan M. Bellinger on February 1, 1958. After graduating she established a home with Duncan on the Bellinger farm, later renamed Dairyland Sales & Service, on Junction Road, where she spent the rest of her life. Shirley and her husband chose to raise their family on the farm, where they also raised purebred Brown Swiss cattle, market hogs and 500 acres of feed grains. Their Brown Swiss included many state and national champions and their field crops received many production awards. Shirley’s community activities have included involvement in Catskill Area Hospice, Schoharie Co. Historical Society, Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4-H Leader,

and Schoharie Co. Farm Bureau. She was also a member of the Schoharie United Presbyterian Church, where she served as elder, deacon, financial secretary and treasurer. Shirley took great pleasure in being a host mother to many foreign exchange students, 19 at last count, from around the world; many of whom still call her “Mom” and visit whenever possible. Shirley enjoyed travel, and many of her travels included visiting some of her former exchange students. Later in life, Shirley and Duncan enjoyed traveling in their motor home throughout the US, Canada and Mexico. They made many friends in their travels. But, Shirley’s greatest joy was music, which she shared with her children, church and community. While at Hartwick, Shirley played oboe in the college’s symphonic band. One of her proudest musical accomplishments was playing with the symphonic band which was invited to play for the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) All-Eastern conference. Shirley was a charter member of the Depot Lane Singers and sang with the group for 25 years. She played in the church’s bell choir and eventually became

Bellinger; her brother, Lynn (Midge) Manz of Orange City, Florida; daughters, Ginny (Mark) Collins of Quaker Street and SaraJane (Todd) Cipperly of Central Bridge; grandchildren, Paul Collins, Kathryn Cipperly, Alexander Cipperly and Bridget Cipperly; as well as a niece, Katrina (Jeff) Dental of Auburndale, Florida; and nephew, David (Cora) Manz of Monteverde, Florida.
