I

n May of 1995 Neil Jensen hired me right out of Virginia Tech for a job that I expected to take me many places and put me in front of lots of cows. I had never owned a Guernsey, nor did I have a close personal relationship with a single Guernsey breeder. I was just naïve enough to think that I knew enough about cows and people to do the job. Thanks to the support of the incredible people that make up this organization, I never had to doubt that initial assessment. My work for the Guernsey Association has taken me to 45 states (missing Utah, Louisiana and Mississippi in the continental US) and Canada, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, England and the Guernsey Island. I can count as friends, people from at least four continents, only because of our shared passion for the Guernsey cow. There are great Guernseys all over this world and certainly all corners of our country. The excitement at the prospect of walking into a barn down some back road and seeing a truly great cow is as strong today as it was 18 years ago. I have had the opportunity to score Guernseys, Brown Swiss, Milking Shorthorns, Red and Whites, Linebacks, Dutch Belts and Dexters. I’ve met truly interesting and enjoyable people that owned them all. The first Registered Guernseys I ever scored were a pair of Goliath daughters at Ed Watson’s in Michigan on the first weekend I worked for AGA. Neither cow scored VG and I remember wondering at the time why my boss thought it was a good idea to drive four hours to score two daughters of a bull that made them so average. I had a lot to learn about what made cows last. That is a continuing process for our breed as well. One of those cows calved three times, leaving three daughters, while the other calved five times. The more emphasis we can put on rewarding those cows that breed back, fight disease and stand the test of time, the farther ahead our breed will be. Some of my fondest memories of my tenure at AGA are of some of the great sales we had. Not necessarily the final result of a sale, but the process - the people that came

Guernsey Breeders’ Journal — October 2013

together to provide great genetics, those that came to prepare them to look their best and those that worked tirelessly to promote them. It may have sometimes looked like we were all just there for the party, yet I assure you, our sales team had one goal in mind – to get as much return as possible for the sellers and to put great Guernseys in the hands of the people that would achieve even greater success with them after the sale. I want to say a sincere Thank You to all those that I have had the chance to work with at AGA and Purebred Publishing during these 18 years. The one constant during that time has been Ida Albert, who has been a true jewel for our breed and for those of us that came to work for AGA straight out of school, young and in a new town without any family close by. Brian Schnebly has been a partner in many projects, road trips and escapades over the years. I shudder to think how many miles we have travelled together, but I can truly say I enjoyed them all. There have been others over the years that have given greatly to this breed and have been a pleasure to work with. I wish the best to, and thank our current staff of Ida, Brian, Cheri, Lindsey and Ashley. There are a great many of you that I would have liked to call individually to tell of my impending departure. So many of you are like family to me after all this time. I have eaten with your families, slept in your homes, agonized over the great one that was lost too early and debated the right mating for the ones still in the barn. I am leaving a job that I have truly enjoyed after 18 years in order to have more time for my family and their growing interests and activities. My son Zachary is 7 and my daughter Sylvia is 4. In the last year, the extended travel and heavy workload required of my job has become more and more of a burden to me and to them. I think this organization and the Guernsey cow are ready for new ideas, new leadership and renewed energy. I will hope and expect every day that the American Guernsey Association will continue to provide excellent marketing opportunities for genetics to our Cont. on pg. 17

umbers. They are a big part of our work and a necessary part of analyzing where we are now and where we are going. The list of numbers important to the AGA and our members is long. The importance of each will vary among members but our future depends on how they play out. Two of the most important numbers— the number of members and the number of cows are very vital to the health of our organization. All of us should be working at all times to promote good Guernsey cows to individuals interested in starting out in the dairy business or to existing herds who want to tap into the traits which our cows possess and which can add to their bottom line. Guernsey milk is delicious and customers are lining up! A number which I am still processing is the number of small dairies which are bottling Guernsey milk and marketing it directly to consumers. Of the farms we have sold cows to, the lowest price they sell their milk for is $10 per gallon. $16 per gallon is the record price so far. Is this a number that more of us should consider for the future? Genetic evaluation reports provide us with a wealth of numbers we can work with. Production values on the bulls we use. Type trait numbers that build a mental picture of a bull's daughters. These numbers are always the major part of picking what bulls go into my tank. While on the topic of sires, let's consider the number of active AI sires. Don't we all wish we had more bulls to choose from? Let's all work to expand the number of Young Sires proven to help our active AI list grow. Then we will have the choices we need to move our Guernsey cows into the future. Some numbers from the genetic evaluations are less obvious but still tell a story when we look at them. DPR (Daughter Pregnancy Rate) was a big topic at the Oklahoma convention. Looking at the past genetics it seems that we should have watched this number more closely. PL (Productive Life) is also another number in this category. As we move forward, lets consider these numbers as well when selecting bulls

www.usguernsey.com

to use in our herds. I am hopeful then that we will see numbers we can be proud of. Some numbers we are very proud of. Eighteen is the number of years Seth Johnson has been an employee of this association. His decision to move on and have more family time is one I respect. In the time I have known Seth, I have always seen his Guernsey spirit as a given. I will indeed remember forever the tone of his voice when he announced the Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo,“It's the Guernsey!” On behalf of the AGA Board and all of us in the Guernsey family, we have one word: Thanks. Our appreciation for Seth's time, hard work and dedication to our organization could not be conveyed any better, no matter how many words I might use. Seth: Best Wishes in your future endeavors. Nine is the number of your Directors who now take on the challenge of finding an interim and then permanent replacement to fill the Executive Secretary position. I am personally very pleased with this group. I trust a good result will be found. At this time of transition we need to develop a vision for the future of the AGA and the Guernsey cow. We would all value your input into this important task. Please contact us with your thoughts and concerns. Even though numbers are very important to what we do, those last two paragraphs point out that numbers aren't everything. Guernsey people are special—from those I grew up with here in Oregon, those I met 40 years ago, those I have just gotten to meet as a Board member, to those I have only read about and look forward to meeting. As we go forward, we face a lot of choices and challenges. Some of you are bound to wish a different choice in one area or another had been made. But special people and our special cows are the glue that hold the pieces together to build the future. I'm looking forward to it!

Road Recollections

I

n last month’s column, I wrote about some of the non-Aaron sons that could be making an impact in the near future. This month I wanted to jump back to the Aaron sons again, and give an update on some of those bulls and how their daughters are looking. I just finished up a trip through New York and the Aaron sons are definitely making an impact already on many herds. I have seen daughters of no fewer than seven Aaron sons so far, and all of them have had one thing in common…great udders! The two Aaron sons with the most daughters fresh thus far are Springhill Jackpot-ET and Springhill Judgment-ET. These full brothers were the first sons sampled out of Dix Lee Tiller Joke. Both bulls received their first proofs in August and would rank in the top four for PTI but have not been released because of limited reliability, which will definitely change following the next proof run in December. The Jackpot daughters are stylish and very correct with a straight top line and great feet and legs. The udders are very well attached and youthful, being high above the hocks. The Jackpots could use more depth and openness of rib and could also be wider throughout. The other thing that I have noticed, which I may have mentioned in a previous article, is the teat length is a little long and the shape is a bit narrow. I don’t feel this fact is a serious problem, just a difference I have no-

8

ticed when comparing Brian Schnebly the Jackpot daughters to other two-year-olds. The daughters of Springhill Judgment-ET have good strength and width to complement their stature. They too are stylish and straight-lined cows. I would like to see them a little sharper over the shoulders with more angularity. The udders have been extremely well-attached and youthful. I also prefer the teat length and shape of the Judgment daughters when compared to the daughters of Jackpot. The next two Aaron sons I would like to mention, I will talk about together, because the daughters have been very similar to each other thus far. Jens Gold Aaron Crunch-ET and Marodore Aarons Levi-ET both represent new cow families that were introduced to the A.I. industry at the time these bulls were sampled. Both bulls are making daughters that are average for stature. They seem to have a great combination of dairyness and strength. I like the depth and openness of rib that the Crunch and Levi daughters possess. The daughters appear to be milking well and I feel they have the strength needed to sustain high production. The udders are high and wide in the rear and appear to have a lot of quality to them. They have an ideal teat placement and a strong udder cleft. Neither of these

Guernsey Breeders’ Journal — October 2013

bulls received an official proof yet in August but I anticipate some great things from both of them in the coming months. The last two Aaron sons I want to just briefly mention are Indian Acres Prada-ET and Spring Walk Sherberts Toro-ET. Both bulls currently have brothers on the active A.I. list. Prada is a maternal brother to American Pie and Toro is a maternal brother to both Bart and Mint. I have only seen a couple milking Prada and Toro daughters thus far but I am excited by what I have seen early on. The Pradas have the show ring style and balance. They are angular and dairy with good feet and legs. The Toros appear to maybe have a stronger frame, being shorter and wider throughout. I have seen two Toro daughters fresh so far and they have great udders! I hesitate to elaborate too much yet on either bull but I have high hopes for them based on the early results. Recently, in a presentation recognizing Berneta Gable as National Dairy Shrine’s 2013 Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder, Blaine Crosser mentioned that Sniders Option Aaron-ET has remained at the top of the PTI list for longer than any bull in recent memory and that it was unlikely he would relinquish that top spot until one of his sons came along. Well, so far it has been easy for me to see what Blaine was referring to as Aaron sons already show signs of the amazing consistency that has kept him at the top of the lineup for so long. I look forward to observing more of these daughters and reporting back to you in the coming months.

t was an unseasonably warm day outside of the All-American Dairy Show complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on September 11, but as cool as the AC kept the arena, it was one hot contest as 211 Guernseys paraded before the judges at the NGS-Harrisburg show. Judge Chris Lahmers and Associate Judge Jeremy Kohler had their work cut out for them as exhibitors from New England to Wisconsin to Texas and a total of 11 states brought out their finest Guernseys for the two Ohio judges’ consideration. Judge Lahmers and Judge Kohler had 137 heifers pass over the tanbark during the first half of the show. The Junior Champions came from two of the largest classes of the day, the Fall and the Winter Heifer classes at 30 and 21 respectively. Lahmers described his first place Fall Heifer, Springhill Mentor Jazzy-ET, as a “tremendous heifer, a handy winner of the Fall Heifer calf class and Junior Champion for me today.” Owned by Marshall Overholt of Springhill Farm, Big Prairie, Ohio, the Mentor daughter is out of Dix Lee Tiller Joke, EX-93, with a record of 31,350M 1543F and 1033P. The September 4 Fall Calf was chosen over the Reserve Champion for her style, balance and size according to Judge Lahmers. Misty Meadows Rebel Satchel, the Reserve Junior Champion, was exhibited by Beth Clark of New Paris, Pennsylvania. Lahmers did credit the mid-December Reserve Junior Champion for tracking a bit better on her feet and legs over his other first place heifers and praised her strength of line and dairyness. Sired by Sniders Challenge Rebel, the first place Winter Heifer Calf is out of Misty Meadows Landon Sadie, 91 points with over 27,500M 1250F and 835P. Pulled out for consideration and tapped for Honorable Mention was the first place Summer Yearling, Knapps Regis Tabby-ET, exhibited by Kaila Stoltzfus of East Earl, Pennsylvania. She is a Regis daughter out of a 91-point dam with 108,910M 4805F 3594P lifetime to date. A strong group of young cow classes followed the selection of the Junior Champions and the first place Senior Two-YearOld, Millborne Hillpoint S Fiesta-ET, exhibited by P. Morey Miller, City Slickers & Sarbacker of Granby, Connecticut was selected as the Intermediate Champion. This two-time All American is sired by Spider and backed by a 92-point Tiller dam with records over 23,000M. Reserve Champion honors went to Knapps Aaron Jade-ET, the first place Senior 3-Year-Old Cow exhibited by Marshall Overholt of Springhill Farm. This 90-point Aaron daughter has 17,680M 769F and 579P as a two-yearold. She is backed by a Very Good Til-

Winner of the Pennsylvania Three-Year Old Futurity and second place Senior Three-Year-Old, Sniders Jester Bobrees, was pulled out for Intermediate Champion contention. Receiving Honorable Mention honors, this Jester daughter is out of a 90-point Adacka with records over 19,750M. Lavon Farms of Plano, Texas swept the Four, Five and Six and Over cow classes to take the Senior and Reserve Senior Champion honors with two of their cows. Praised for her beautiful mammary, Lahmers made the second calf, Very Good, four-year-old, Lavon Farms Gemin Jill, Senior Champion over the deep, open-ribbed, Very Good, Five-Year-Old, Lavon Farms Rowe Ready, the Reserve Senior Champion. She is backed by a 88-point dam with over 131,400M lifetime to date. Sniders Dollars Adeline won both the 100,000/125,000 Pound Cow class and the NGS-Harrisburg Total Performance Cow. elebrating 50 years, the staff of the All-American Dairy Show created an event for the youth that will not soon be forgotten. $35,000 worth of donated prizes were presented to youth ranging from clippers to donated calves. Snider Homestead, honored for their 50 years of commitment to the show, donated Snider GEO Watchout, a June Geo calf that was won by Hannah Wilson of Middletown, MD. The NJS-Harrisburg show was judged by Carrie Sears of South Deerfield, MA and Associate Judge, Richard Giddings of Brandon, VT. Youth from across the Eastern States paraded 142 Guernseys through the ring. Sears and Giddings worked through 106 heifers to find their junior champions in three of the yearling classes. Sears commented that “the more we look at this summer yearling, the more we really like her and she’ll be the junior champion today,” as Giddings tapped Eternal Flame Moonshine, owned by Owen Pieper of Walton, NY. A Kringle daughter from an Excellent Yogibear, she topped the large class of summer

yearlings. Reserve Junior Champion honors went to Emily Fisher of Pittsfield, NH with her Indian Acres Pies-ET mid-March Spring Yearling, Topline Pies Patty. Last year’s NJS-Harrisburg Junior Champion, and this year’s first place Fall Yearling, Hearts Desire Jackpot Sweet was tapped for Honorable Mention for owner Marshall Overholt of Big Prairie, OH. Overholt again saw the champion circle with Knapps Aaron Jade-ET, the first place Senior Three-Year-Old when Sears and Giddings tapped her for Intermediate Champion. She is a 90-point Aaron daughter from the Tom Dee family. Reserve Intermediate Champion honors went to the first place Senior Two-Year-Old Pies daughter, GR Willow Brook Pies Ronda, owned by Lena Aiken of New Wilmington, PA. Senior Champion honors went to the 92-point winning Four-Year-Old, Millborne Fame Pixels Pixie, owned by Logan Derickson of Middletown, DE. members and can also take steps to help our membership capture the value of Guernsey milk and all its unique qualities. There are so many people out there that truly wish to see this breed succeed. Success is but a matter of all of us pulling in the same direction. I don’t intend to walk away from this breed. My children and my sister’s children own Guernseys and I realize that no other breed can rise to their level. They are just at the beginning of what I hope will be many years of benefitting from the tremendous youth programs we have in the Guernsey breed and from the expertise of so many of you who are anxious to help the next generation. Feel free to contact me in the future if you want to talk Guernseys – there’s no topic I like better. Guernsey95@yahoo.com is my new e-mail address.

T

he Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder award is given each year by National Dairy Shrine to recognize an active dairy producer, who, through expertise in managing a dairy-breeding herd based upon sound genetic and business principles, serves as a model of success for contemporaries throughout the nation. There is little doubt that this year’s recipient meets all of these qualifications and more. Let me introduce you to Berneta Gable of New Enterprise, PA. This has been a week of recognition for the Gable family as they were honored along with four other exhibitors that have shown cattle here at the Pennsylvania All-American for all fifty years of the show’s existence. Snider Homestead Farm is indeed a family farm that has been operation since 1892 and has been the home of Guernsey cattle for nearly 100 years. Kids and cows have been the center of attention at Snider Homestead for seven generations. Here in

20

1952, before Berneta was even born, the Guernsey cows filled the barnyard on the farm. Each family member over the years has helped to develop the farming operation and dairy herd. Today the farm is operated by Berneta, her husband, Brad, and son, Aaron and his wife, Amy with support from daughter, Kendy. Granddaughters, Bella and Blaire, will soon follow in the family footprints with Guernseys! The Gables farm 400 acres with 100 acres of corn, 20 acres of barley, 200 acres of alfalfa and grass hay with the balance to pasture. The herd of 150 milk cows is housed in 55 comfort stalls and 54 free stalls plus a loose housing pack. Five box stalls are available for calving and special needs cows. Calves begin in hutches and are then moved to a Virginia-style heifer barn until breeding age. Berneta’s love for the Guernsey cow began at an early age and the show ring was a very special part of her family’s life. Berneta hit the tanbark at any early age and proudly showed Fireside Jesters Doreen, a four-time grand champion at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Nearly fifty years later, Berneta is still strapping winners with the junior champion heifer at the 2012 National Guernsey Show in Louisville. Over the years, Snider Homestead has earned more than 180 All-American nominations resulting in 27 All-Americans and 33 Reserve All-Americans.Here at the Pennsylvania All-American, Snider Homestead has won the coveted premier breeder and exhibitor banners for eight consecutive years beginning in 2006-make that nine years as they were awarded that honor again today! Last year, the Gables received 16 All-American nominations themselves and had three more animals nominated that they had sold to new owners. Four different

cows have been named Grand Champion at National Guernsey Shows beginning with Sniders Telestar Heaven in 1993, Guerndale Fayettes Robin in 1996, Sniders Opp Georgie in 1999 and Cedar Fringed Altann in 2000 and 2001. At the PA Farm Show, only two cows have ever been twice named the supreme championship and both cows have been Guernseys with the Sniders prefix. The most recent winner was Sniders Perfecto Brenden (EX-94). Berneta and Brad always say “there is nothing better than kids and cows!” Son Aaron and daughter Kendy both showed successfully at the state and national level as juniors. Kendy was crowned as the National Guernsey Queen in 2004 and Aaron and Amy received the Outstanding Young Farmer award at the 2010 National Guernsey convention hosted by the state of Pennsylvania. Other family members and local youth have been introduced to the show ring with Snider Homestead animals while being mentored by Berneta. The show crew involves family and friends alike all working together to exhibit the best of Snider Homestead. The Gable herd is not just about showing Guernseys! The family makes its living from selling milk and marketing elite genetics! The 2012 herd average on 124 Guernseys was just under 17,000 pounds of milk, nearly 750 of fat and 580 of protein. Longevity is valued and a 2012 Guernsey Journal ad recognizes 12 cows with over 100,000 pounds of milk including a top ten breed living lifetime cow, Pleasant View Goliath Band with over 206,000. The breeding philosophy at Snider Homestead centers on building strong cow families. Any sire used in the herd must have an outstanding dam and strong maternal line. Proven and high genetic young

mating sires need to have a good combination of milk, components and type. Heavy emphasis is placed on udders and feet and legs which impact longevity. In recent years, more attention has been given to fitness traits like productive life and DPR. Embryo transfer has been a prominent tool for genetic progress with IVF work being used more predominately since 2010. Today, the harvest of the Snider Homestead breeding program is impacting the entire Guernsey breed in the United States and around the world. At the center of this genetic excellence are Altann and her offspring. An (EX-95-EX-95-MS) Gold Star dam National Grand Champion, no cow has had more impact on the Guernsey breed in the last decade through her sons. Sniders Option Aaron-ET stands at the top of the PTI list with high reliability and is likely to only give up the top spot to one of his sons in the next year. Sniders Ronald Alstar is the breed’s high net merit $ bull and the most elite health trait sire in the breed today while Sniders Deemand Adacka-ET was the leading sire of All-American nominations in 2012 and sire of the National Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo. Altann has eight Excellent daughters including an EX-93 point daughter that produced an EX93 point daughter that has an EX-94 point daughter. The Gables have successfully marketed offspring from the Altann family including the pick of their herd in 2004 for $20,000. Despite the demanding schedule of running a successful dairy farm, Berneta Gable has found the time to serve the breed and industry that she loves. She has served two terms on the board of directors of the Amer-

ican Guernsey Association and was President of Purebred Publishing. Berneta is also a member and past chairperson of the AGA show committee. Here in her home state, Bernita is a member of the PA All-American show board of directors and has served as a director and president of the Pennsylvania Guernsey Breeders Association. A Penn State dairy judging team alumni, Berneta has judged Guernsey shows across the United States and in Australia. Berneta has been recognized for her accomplishments and service to the dairy industry. She was the 2000 World Dairy Expo Woman of the Year, the PA Dairy Woman of the Year in 2001, and the Obie Snider Award winner at the PA All-American in 2007. This recognition is especially meaningful since it is named in honor of her uncle who was her mentor for many years. Brad and Berneta were named Master Breeder by the AGA in 2010 and received the Whitey McKown Master Breeder award at World Dairy Expo. While Berneta is most often the face of Snider Homestead, she will be the first to tell you that Brad and Aaron are the backbone of the success that they have enjoyed. Always humble, Berneta Gable and her family have built one of the leading Guernsey herds in the nation with hard work, attention to detail and integrity in everything they do. Her faith, her family and her cows are her life! Tonight we honor her as the 41st recipient and only the third Guernsey breeder ever to receive the Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder award. Congratulations, Berneta!

Berneta thanked her family and friends for their support and expressed her faith in the future of Snider Homestead with the next generation at the helm.

As presented by Blaine Crosser at the Dairy Shrine Banquet Sept. 11

Snider Homestead once again takes home the Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners and the Total Performance Award at this year's NGS-Harrisburg, along with being honored for being a 50year participant of the All-American Dairy Show!

hree successive generations appear among the top 10 CPI Cows in August. Coulee Crest Nick Lorilyn, EX-91, is the #1 CPI cow. Her daughters, Coulee Crest AP Lorilee, VG-86, and Coulee Crest Adacka Lainey-ET, VG83, are tied at the #3 spot. Lorilyn’s dam, who has ranked as high as #2 in the past, is fresh again and is the #7 CPI cow this time around – Flambeau Manor Decision Lori. Lori and Lorilyn teamed up to become the first daughter/dam pair to each make over 40,000M. Lori has a top record of 3-09 365D 3x 44,250M 5.9% 2,600F 3.0% 1,313P while Lorilyn made 3-05 365D 3x 42,440M 5.3% 2,254F 3.1% 1,298P. Lorilee started out impressively with 1-11 303D 3x 22,680M 5.5% 1,243F 3.3% 759P. Decision Lori is a sister to Flambeau Manor Tiller Les-ET, being out of the EX92 Enhancer Lana cow. Lorilee has a Conqueror son ready for sampling at Genex. Lorilyn has a Blue Spruce son at Accelerated Genetics and a Grumpy son at Select Sires. Lorilyn has daughters on the ground by Pie, Prada, Gary, Turley, Adacka and Geo. Lori has daughters by Prada, Laredo, Crunch, Gary, Fame and Grumpy. Lainey had a Gary heifer in March. Lori was bred by Flambeau Manor in Tony, Wisconsin, and is owned by Coulee Crest of Cashton, Wisconsin. Coulee Crest bred and owns Lorilyn and Lainey and bred Lorilee. They sold Lorilee in the National Sale to Lily Lane and Trotacre Farm of Enon Valley, Pennsylvania. Three maternal sister from the “N Family” from Lang Haven account for three more of the top 10 CPI Cows. Lang Haven Grumpy Nettie-ET, VG-87, is #2. She has a first record of 2-03 304D 2x 19,990M 5.0% 990F 3.5% 697P. She had a daughter by Activate last fall. Lang Haven Alstar Nuance-ET, VG-85, who is the #5 cow. She was Nom. Jr. All-American Fall Calf in 2011 and had a Laredo heifer this spring. Lang Haven Christian Neena-ET, VG86, is the #6 CPI cow and was 4th Spring Calf at the NGS-Madison in 2009. Her first record totaled 2-02 310D 22,970M 5.1% 1,178F 3.4% 786P. She has a yearling daughter by Alstar. They have brothers by Alstar at Genex and Select Sires and a Prada brother at Accelerated Genetics. Their dam is Lang Haven Les Nicollette, EX-91. She made over 1,500F and 1,100P and 105,000M lifetime. The next dam was a VG-86 Decision with over 1,600F and 1,000P. The next dam was an EX-90 Perfecto with over 100,000M lifetime that is the granddam of both Neon and Natural via two different daughters. All

three top-10 cows are bred and owned by Lang Haven Guernsey of West Salem, Wisconsin. The well-known Conni G family from Ripley Farm in New York accounts for the next two top-10 CPI cows. Ripley Farms Aron Coni Tina-ET, EX-90, is #8. She completed her third lactation with 4-03 365D 3x 36,150M 4.0% 1,459F 3.3% 1,193P. She was part of the HM All-American Produce of Dam in 2010 and was Nom Jr. All-American Spring Yearling in 2009. She has been in the top 5 at a national show in three different classes, including as a Spring Calf and Spring Yearling at Madison and as a Jr. 2-Year-Old at Harrisburg. Her dam is the original brood cow, Low Brook Goldfoot Conny, EX-90, that came down from Canada as a calf and started one of the largest families in the breed. Coni Tina is bred and owned by Ripley Farm of Cortland, New York. Idlemont Yogibear Ryanne, VG-84, is the #9 CPI cow and just finished a stunning record of 2-10 365D 2x 37,270M 4.9% 1,788F 3.4% 1,244P. Her dam is a VG-88 Royalty with 900F and 750P. The next dam was an EX91 Garrett with 1,100F and 780P. The Garrett was Nom. All-American 4-Year-Old and is out of the original Goldfoot Conny cow. Ryanne was bred by the partnership of Neil Jensen, Steve Sywassink and Dan Brubaker of Wisconsin, Iowa and Virginia respectively. They sold her as a huge bred heifer in the Upper Midwest Spring Sale to Emily Hellendrung of Ridgeland, Wisconsin. There are six more members of this maternal family among the top 50 CPI cows. Marodore Grumpy Lioness, EX-90, is the lone member of her family in the top 10, but can claim a very deep pedigree filled with well-known cows that have held top positions before. Her first lactation totaled 1-11 338D 2x 21,850M 3.6% 795F 3.0% 667P. Her dam was a VG-88 Tiller that made over 1,200F and 900P. She was 4th Winter Yearling at the NGS-Louisville in 2009. The next dam is a VG-85 Alstar that still is the #14 CPI Cow with over 29,000M, 1,500F and 970P. She is out of the famous bull mother and brood cow, Marodore Jay Lana, EX-91. Lana had over 230,000M lifetime, was Nom. All-American and had several sons proven in AI. Lioness has a son by Aaron slated for sampling and was bred and owned by Marodore Farm of Baltimore, Ohio.

Queen's Corner Greetings Guernsey friends, A “Congratulations” is in order for all those who represented our Guernsey breed at the AllAmerican Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. My first national show as Queen is one that I will certainly remember for a long time. I want to extend a special thank you to Seth Johnson who helped and guided me during the first months of

Princess Diaries There is nothing like the smell of Clear Magic and the sounds of clippers buzzing in the fall air getting ready to show our favorite brown and white cows. I am sure that everyone is busy preparing their cattle for all of the county, state and national shows. We had an outstanding turn out at the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, PA. I enjoyed visiting with all of the very prestigious Guernsey exhibitors and breeders. I wish everyone the best of luck at the other national shows. ~ Rachel Nance, National Guernsey Princess

my reign. As I sat and watched the shows (junior and open), I was so proud to be a part of the Association that couples passion for the Guernsey cow and friendship into a week of hard work and competition. Rachel Nance, the National Guernsey Princess, and I had the opportunity to see some great cows, pass out ribbons and beautiful awards to the exhibitors, and catch up with friends before and after the shows. To sum it up, I think everyone had a great time at the All-American. But what I thought was so special was the marking of 50 years of this national show. Traditions might be becoming a thing of the past. People say, “we used to do this,” or “it was once a tradition to do this.” You fill in the blanks. I’m still

reflecting on the fact that 50 years is a long time, and our Association is able to be a part of a tradition that is very much alive and prospering. The fall season has made its appearance, and I encourage all of you to think about some traditions or past memories you have experienced. For many of you, attending the World Dairy Expo may just be one of those traditions. I’m excited to journey from Pittsburgh to Madison, and I look forward to seeing all of you and your great Guernseys there! For those of you who are at home taking care of daily business, keep doing what you are doing. It is you who support these traditions with your investment in breeding and milking great cows. Enjoy this fall season, Guernsey friends! God Bless, Bethany Trotter, National Guernsey Queen

Upcoming Changes to the Appraisal Program The American Guernsey Association will be re-entering a joint appraisal program with the Brown Swiss Association effective October 1, 2013. In this joint program, classifiers will be scoring Ayrshires, Brown Swiss, Guernseys, and Milking Shorthorns. Along with this change, we will also be switching to an 8-month rotation as opposed to the current 9-month rotation. In the process of making this switch, some states may be classified more often than every 9-months and a few may go a little longer between scheduling. By March 2014, every state should have begun the new 8-month rotation. We apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused during this transition phase. Here are the states scheduled for the next 7 months:
