The Exec Report By Cory Salzl I hope this Spring issue of the Milking Shorthorn Journal finds you with Spring weather in your area! The Spring issue has always been one of my favorite and most anticipated as it includes the winners of the All-American contest. I have always enjoyed researching the pedigrees of the winners and using that information to fine-tune my knowledge of the breed. I want to congratulate all of the winners and participants – whether it is your first, or you’ve had a number of them, it is always a truly rewarding experience. Time sure has flown by this past year as your Executive Secretary, and it is with mixed emotions that I write my last edition of “The Exec Report”. We have implemented many changes and improvements over the past year. The Gold Star Dam Award was launched, the first edition of the On Farm Milking Shorthorn Photo Contest was held, and we hosted our first Online Milking Shorthorn Sale. We are in the finishing stages of developing a new True Type Cow Painting among many other things. There have been a vast array of changes to the technology and office functions which have hopefully improved service to our members. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members for the opportunity to serve you this past year. It has been a pleasure to get to meet so many of you while on the road. Many of you have taught me things along the way – and I am thankful for everything. I am sure our paths will continue to cross as I will continue to be an active member and breeder of Milking Shorthorns.

From the

President

By Susan Lee Challenge and Opportunity As most of you know by now, we are again looking for an executive secretary. Cory’s last day is March 21. Ads have appeared, the deadline has passed, and interviews will be taking place the last part of April. People have called me to ask “What are we going to do in the couple of months without an executive secretary and with the national meeting soon?” We will do what we need to do! Cory has offered to help as much as possible. In the last year, he has better organized the office and transferred our finances to Quickbooks and wants to see us continue to move ahead in these areas. Whether we have to hire someone interim or all of us do a little more – work will continue to flow. Having said that, people need to be patient, and, most of all, get things into the office in a timely manner. Let’s not have many rush items to handle during this period. Let’s be part of the solution and not the problem. Our Society, being small, depends on our members volunteering to do whatever they can when needed. Whether it be on a committee doing research for the board, helping to put together a national meeting, helping someone get caught up on their registrations or at a time of transition, doing whatever you can, everyone is important! We all have different strengths and should make sure we use them to the best of our ability in helping our Society. As we look back on situations that happen, challenges always offer new opportunities. Most of the time we grow and prosper from these changes. One way everyone can assist is to completely fill out your registration and transfer forms so we won’t have to play phone tag and your work can be delivered back to you in the shortest period of time. As the small breeds continue to visit about cooperation and working together, Brown Swiss has presented a proposal to us to do registrations and transfers for the group. Becky Payne, Ayrshire Executive Secretary, is helping everyone with USLGE to be sure we get our information in on time to obtain monies to travel around the world promoting U.S. genetics. The national meeting and Ssle are fast approaching. Please make sure you get your sale consignments in before the deadline. This is a great opportunity to show off your best and let everyone know where you are heading with your breeding program. Many new members are enjoying one or two Red, White, and Roans. Advertise so an interested buyer can visit with you before the sale. Communication is the main ingredient in almost all we do in life and must be continual. Satisfied buyers always return. Remember any one of the board members are in a leadership role and are there to visit with – give them a call!

Spring 2014

2014 Call to Annual Meeting To: All members of the American Milking Shorthorn Society You are hereby notified that the Annual Meeting of the American Milking Shorthorn Society will be held Friday, June 27, 2014 at 9:00 am at the Westwood Restaurant, 94 North Elm Street, Westfield, Massachusetts. To be eligible to vote, you must be a paid Adult or Associate Member thirty (30) days before the meeting. For 2014, the date is May 28, 2014. The ballot to elect delegates will be mailed separately. Delegates are chosen from the ballot to represent you and your districts with the right and duty to vote on all matters that are presented at the annual meeting. Remember, you may vote individually if you are present at the annual meeting. Business to come before the membership at the Annual Meeting includes: 1. Reports from the President and committees on programs and policies of the society discussed by the Board of Directors and subsequent action. 2. Proposed by-law changes from the Articles and By-Laws Committee: AMENDED ARTICLES OF INCORPORATION OF AMERICAN MILKING SHORTHORN SOCIETY Article XIV. Treasurer The Executive Secretary or Operations Officer or his/her designee shall perform the duties of Treasurer which shall be to receive all moneys of the Society and account for same, and pay all expenses of the Society, keeping adequate records as prescribed by the Board of Directors of the financial affairs of the Society, and shall make a complete financial report at the annual meeting. The Executive Secretary or Operations Officer acting as Treasurer, shall also mail to each director a monthly financial report giving such information as the Board of Directors may require. The books of the Society shall be audited each year by certified public accountants des-

ignated and employed by the Board. The Executive Secretary or Operations Officer, acting as Treasurer, shall give such surety bond as the Board of Directors may from time to time direct. Proposed Change The Executive Secretary or Operations Officer or his/her designee shall perform the duties of Treasurer which shall be to receive all moneys of the Society and account for same, and pay all expenses of the Society, keeping adequate records as prescribed by the Board of Directors of the financial affairs of the Society, and shall make a complete financial report at the annual meeting. The Executive Secretary or Operations Officer acting as Treasurer, shall also mail to each director a monthly financial report giving such information as the Board of Directors may require. The books of the Society shall be audited not less than once every other year and may be audited each year by certified public accountants designated by and employed by the Board, at the discretion of the Board. For the years in which an official audit is not performed, an accountant’s compilation report shall be completed. The Executive Secretary or Operations Officer, acting as Treasurer, shall give such surety bond as the Board of Directors may from time to time direct. Reason for Proposed Change Since Board members receive monthly financial statements from the Executive Secretary or Operations Officer, and it is assumed that members of the Board and the Financial Committee are diligent in their review of these documents, it is felt by the current Board that the expense of yearly audits is unnecessary. This change will potentially save the Society between $2,000 and $3,000 every other year. AMENDED BY-LAWS OF AMERICAN MILKING SHORTHORN SOCIETY Article IV. Notice of Meeting The Executive Secretary or Operations Officer shall notify by mail all members of

the time and place of meetings of the Society, not less than thirty (30) days prior thereto, or by notice published in the Milking Shorthorn Journal in an issue mailed so as to be received by the members at least thirty (30) days before the meeting The Executive Secretary or Operations Officer shall notify by mail, not less than ten (10) days prior thereto, all members of the Board of Directors of the time and place of all regular or special meetings of the Board. National Convention Tours The Pearson Family Elmhurst Dairy Farms, LLC 342 West Main Street, Millbury, MA 01527 508-865-2158 pearsmooland@verizon.net Elmhurstdairyfarms.com

The farm was established in 1934 by Oscar and Esther Pearson as a retail store and processing plant. In the 1960’s, their son Robert and his wife, Barbara, assumed operations continuing with the processing plant and retail store in addition to wholesale and retail routes. In 1987, with the help of their sons Bob and John and daughter Cindy, the farm purchased a neighboring farm and the milking facilities. Today, they milk 60 head of Milking Shorthorn and Holstein cows raising all their own replacement heifers for a total head of 120. Within the farm operations, they continue today as a producer/handler with the processing plant, milking facilities and retail store. In addition to bottling their own milk into whole, 2%, 1% and skim milk, they make 26 flavors of 16.5% butterfat ice cream with distribution through wholesale and retail routes. Additionally, they process maple syrup, a cut-your-own Christmas tree farm, a vegetable stand and sell cord wood. The farm consists of 300 acres of which 263 acres were placed into Agriculture Preservation Restriction Program (APR) in 1990. The farm is a family affair with Robert Pearson, as the processing plant manager, in charge of retail and wholesale distribution, as well as calf management; Barbara Pearson assists in the processing plant and runs the retail store; Bob Pearson works with the herd and crops, is the Christmas tree farm manager and also runs the cord wood business; John Pearson does herd and crops management in addition to helping with the processing plant and wholesale distribution; Cindy Pearson works at the retail store, processing plant and is the bookkeeper; Fran Pearson helps with calf management, works at the retail store, and helps with general part time labor; Brittany (Pearson) Gauthier helps part time at the processing plant, retail store, and is the vegetable stand manager; Robert Gauthier is a part time general laborer, along with Cody Pearson who helps part time with milking and crops.

Sires being used include Bar-D Cindy’s Clay, Spungold-R CD Playboy, Nixs LCD Lido ET, GMC Rebel Logic, and Ecufarm Kaiser Royalty. Some of the herd highlights include: Elmhurst Farm Clay Kandy, the first-place Spring Yearling and Honorable Mention Junior Champion at the Eastern States Exposition; Elmhurst Farm Logic Kookie, who was a previous firstplace Winter Calf at Eastern States Expo, first-place Winter Yearling at the New York State Carousel show and Eastern States Exposition, and a first-place ThreeYear-Old at the Eastern States Exposition; and Elmhurst Farm Logic Krimson, the first-place Fall Calf, and the following year, the first-place Fall Yearling at the Eastern States Exposition. In 2008, the Pearson family was chosen to receive a grant from the Massachusetts Technological Corporation to build solar panels on the roof of the barn to generate electricity for the farm. Currently, the photovoltaic cells produce 7,000 kilowatt hours per year which is 1/5 of the farm's annual energy use. The Dairy Farm has been consistently recognized for its high quality milk and dairy products and low somatic cell counts. In 2010, Elmhurst Farms was recognized by the State of Massachusetts as one of the top 1,000 places to visit in Massachusetts, or 1 of 136 in Central Massachusetts and awarded the Greener Pasture Award by Eastern State Exposition Expo as Massachusetts Outstanding Dairy Farm. In 2013, DairyLea awarded the farm for top quality milk production for 12 consecutive months. "We look forward to seeing everyone in June. Thank you in advance for visiting our farm." Ben Bemis Fine-Kine Genetics/ Gary Farm Milking Shorthorns 4 Wyben Rd., Westfield, MA 01085 413 563 5111 Mscowest1389@yahoo.com Search "Fine-Kine Genetics" on Facebook “I just started shipping milk just this past November after being offered a barn to rent near my house. I have had Milking Shorthorns all of my life and always dreamed of farming on my own. Currently I am milking about 30 cows in a tie-stall barn. It is about half Shorthorns with some Holsteins, Jerseys and Ayrshires mixed in,” said Ben. “I run the farm myself with some help during chores from the Norris family who own the barn. They have teenaged kids who really like the cows and own a few 4-H animals. My parents keep most of the heifers

at the barn in Westfield and the milk herd is in Westhampton,” Ben said. A herd highlight is Gary's Mo Seven VG87. She was nominated All-American Spring Calf in 2004. She has five daughters including an 86-point Megadeth and an 87-point Liriano, who was nominated All-American in 2012 and 2013. Her CD daughter is projected to produce over 19,000M and has an 84 at 2-02 Liriano daughter. Sires with calves coming this year include Prince of PA, Royalty, and Presto. Service sires include Liriano and RR Zues. One unique fact is that every shorthorn on the farm with a "Gary farm" prefix can be traced back to a Kingsdale Enhancer daughter bought from Billy Bartlett at the 1991 convention, the last time it was in Westfield. "We look forward to seeing you in Westfield in June!"

The Rida Family Morning Dew Farm 101 Cudworth Rd., Worthington, MA brida@hchcweb.org Morning Dew Farm began when LeRoy Rida purchased the farm located in Worthington, Massachusetts in 1942. Originally it was a 143-acre farm that eventually was reduced to 68 acres when part was sold off. LeRoy was a proud breeder of Milking Shorthorn cattle throughout his life. In 1992, the farm was purchased by his grandson, Jeff Rida, and his wife, Karen (Wickland). Once again, Morning Dew Farm came alive with Milking Shorthorn cattle. With the help of Karen’s parents, Glen and Nancy Wickland of Ever Valley Farm in West Chesterfield, the barn was renovated. At that point, all the cattle were moved to their new home so that Jeff and Karen’s children, Glenn, Jessie, Andy and Ryan, could raise cattle and show in 4-H. In 2005, a new milking parlor was built and the Ridas began shipping milk. Today Glenn and Andy, with the help of their father, Jeff, who also does the field work, milk Milking Shorthorns, Ayrshires, and Holsteins. Together with their families, they exhibit at local and national shows across the country.

Among the help is Glenn’s girlfriend, Kate Kelly, and her daughter, Lynny Adams, who is now part of Hampshire County 4-H Club. Andy and his wife, Bridget (Phelon), and their daughters, Madison and Kaleigh, are carrying on the family tradition into the next generation. Madison was given a calf on her first birthday in 2012 that

goes back to one of Grandma Karen’s first animals. Kaleigh will be getting a sister to that calf on her first birthday this summer. Great-Grandpa and Great-Grandma Wickland find a lot of joy in watching the next generation carry on what has been a life long joy of the Wickland and Rida Families.

Ryan, the youngest, has purchased land in Cummington with the plan to milk there one day. Along with his girlfriend, Marjorie Hardy, he has started RidAle Genetics and together they own several Milking Shorthorns and Ayrshires.

Every generation has a legend. Every journey has a first step. Every saga has a beginning.

he purchase of one little calf by a registered Holstein family established a dynasty in the Milking Shorthorn breed. Now, with over 90 direct descendants and the merchandising of multiple additional bulls and daughters across the country, numerous All-Americans and a World Dairy Expo Grand Champion, there is no question about the transmitting ability in the strong maternal line that has established the legend of Lands-Brook Christina EXP ET. Larry Landsgard and his family have bred registered Holsteins in St. Olaf, Iowa, for over 50 years. The little Shorthorn calf that started it all was purchased when Larry received a call from their recipient heifer supplier for their Holstein herd. When the calf was delivered to the farm, the gentleman remarked that the calf could be registered if they were interested. He had purchased two springing Shorthorn heifers from the Gold Mine herd. Maurice and

22

Milking Shorthorn Journal

Bonnie Meyer of Gold Mine just happened to be best friends with the Landsgards and encouraged them to register the calf. When the calf was breeding age, she was bred to Innisfail Primetime. The resulting calf was named Christine. She scored 83 points and had a best record of 18,360M 734F. When Christine reached breeding age, Larry’s father wanted to continue with the Holstein tradition, versus pursuing breeding Milking Shorthorns, so a red Holstein bull, Grand Duc Prophet Red was used. The resulting calf, Lands-Brook Christie, was a fancy heifer that was later named Supreme Champion at the Youth Classic in Iowa. When she calved as a two-year-old with a phenomenal udder, it was no surprise she scored Excellent. Christie was shown at every local show where percentage animals could be exhibited and was never beaten; thus, the decision to develop a show herd of Milking Shorthorns was born. The decision was made to flush Chris-

Spring 2014

tie to Othello who had been named Premier Sire at the World Dairy Expo that year. Two flushes netted two heifers and two bulls out of each flush. The first flush resulted in Christa, who scored EX-91. The heifer from the second flush was LandsBrook Christina EXP ET, who eventually scored EX-96 4E. Sharp and dairy from day one, it was one of the things judges commented about Christina every year. “It was always about how sharp and chiseled she was. To me, she had a certain style about her. She had an awesome udder, calved nine years in a row and that udder never changed. It just got a little more mature. Lots of people thought she looked the best she had ever looked this year at Expo at age 10,” said Landsgard. He commented, “Throughout her 10 years, she was a trouble free cow, and didn’t see a vet, until after this past Expo. And she only saw a foot trimmer during show season. She bred back consistently every year.”

And year after year she won in the ring. Throughout her life, she garnered one Honorable Mention, two Reserve All-American and seven All-American awards, including this year’s Unanimous All-American Aged Cow designation. The one award, that continued to elude her grasp until this year, was the Grand Champion award at World Dairy Expo. When the judge tapped her for Grand there was thunderous applause from the crowd and spectators alike as she finally garnered the Grand Champion award, just fresh three weeks. And there was no bigger smile than Gene ‘Bambi’ Henderson’s as he led her to center stage. Bambi had led her in the ring exclusively for the past few years and was her biggest fan, said Landsgard. Unfortunately, the Landsgards lost Christina eight days after she was named Grand Champion. “The decision was made, a number of years ago, that, as part of the family, she would never be sold or leave the farm. After she was gone, she was buried in the pasture,” Landsgard said. “She was never treated differently than the other 50 cows in the herd. She was in the tie stalls most of the time, a box stall if one was available, but she was on pasture with the rest of the herd primarily.” Christina produced year after year, not only in the ring and with calves, but consistently in the bulk tank as well. She has

a lifetime record of 2,407 days, 113,260M 4,074F and 3,370P. Her legacy continues with a son, Cyclone, at Northstar Genetics that was collected and had semen available. Another son by Mudslinger, Clancy, is owned by the Halpin family, who collected him and are selling his semen. Landsgard said, “Here on the farm there are two Nitro bulls and a CD bull. We plan to collect one of the Nitro sons and the CD. Her oldest daughter is Excellent with over 23,000M. The next oldest daughter is an 86-point Rueben Dapper. She has two Nitro daughters, one due in June and a summer yearling that sold in the Iowa Spring Extravaganza Sale this year. “Christina also has a Gold Brook Parti-Time winter yearling, and a Parti-Time pregnancy due in the fall and one other embryo remains out of her. Landsgard’s nephew and friends bought embryos that were offered in the 2012 World Premier Sale sired by Megadeth. Christina’s dam Christie, established herself as a good maternal line brood cow. She eventually scored EX-94 4E and, no matter what bull was used on her, the daughters were good. “To date, she has 11 daughters and granddaughters that have accumulated 12 All-Americans, 3 Reserve All-Americans and 6 Honorable Mention All-Americans, 14 Junior All-American, 6 Reserve Junior All-Americans and 3

Honorable Mention Junior All-American awards. Plus this year, her daughter and two granddaughters were Reserve AllAmerican Best Three Females. Christie’s offspring have won numerous Produce Of Dam classes at Expo, plus a few times, the best three head were all offspring out of Christie,” said Landsgard. Many breeders have gotten semen from sons of this maternal line. A Reserve All-American Winter Yearling, owned by the Agnews of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, is sired by Cancun, the last calf out of Christie. Mike Maier, of Stitzer, Wisconsin, has a Cyclone sired Reserve All-American Fall Calf, who is Christina’s son. The Honorable Mention All-American Four-Year-Old is a maternal sister to Christina, scored EX90 and owned by Lee Harris of London, Kentucky. Agnews Junior Three-Year-Old Reserve All-American is out of a 91-point maternal sister to Christina and their VG87 Lands-Brook MVF L Cassidy is a threetime All-American. The Landsgards didn’t sell all of the good ones. He said, “There is such a strong maternal line. One of our own, an EX-92 sister to Christina, has multiple All-American awards and her daughter Lands-Brook Chippewa is this year’s Unanimous All-American Junior ThreeYear-Old and was Intermediate Champion at World Dairy Expo. The legacy of this family is just beginning. Lands-Brook Farms has established themselves as breeders of All-Americans with this cow family. From the black and whites to the red and whites, Landsgard said, “We would never have met and made so many friends with Shorthorn people had it not been for her and her siblings doing so well. Developing the cow family has been more than a dream come true. It has been unbelievable. We have met some wonderful people. We had people contact us from across the country when she died. Who could have known that buying a calf from a commercial herd and not knowing what it was and then finding out it was from the Meyers at Gold Mine Farm, who were close family friends….it’s an amazing beginning to a cow family that is having a huge impact in the breed.”

American Milking Shorthorn Society On Farm Milking Shorthorn Photo Contest 2013 Class Winner - 3-Year-Old, Full Herdbook Dairy MAPLETON VLY ACE RAJI Mapleton Valley Farms, Oconomowoc, WI She had the most likes on our Facebook page to be the People’s Choice Overall Winner of the 2013 AMSS On-Farm Photo Contest.

This contest has been created to promote cows that do not get to the show ring and provide an easy way for breeders to show off their best animals. It will also allow for Dual Purpose and Non-Show Eligible animals to be recognized within the breed. The contest will begin as an online only contest with all entrants posted on the AMSS Facebook page. Class winners will also be recognized on the AMSS website.

Farm Name: Address: Contact:

Entries will be due each year at the end of June to provide a contest during the summer months when there is a lull in promotion of show cows (no national shows or AA promotions). This will also allow for a reminder for entries to be turned in at the Annual Convention and hopefully build up excitement about the contest. Judges will be chosen from the Board of Directors for the initial contest and then

randomly from breeders not entered in the contest. Dairy breeders will judge Herdbook and Genetic Expansion classes and Dual Purpose breeders will judge the Dual Purpose entries. Online voting will then be opened to choose the People’s Favorite from among all the class winners (1 PF from each group). Following is an entry form which includes the rules and entry requirements.

Junior Spotlights

This young man enjoys the show circuit, and more so when he takes home the gold. Sam Rhoades is a twelve-year-old son of Doug and Lesilie Rhoades. He goes to school at Ansonia Middle School in Greenville, Ohio. Sam was introduced in to the Milking Shorthorn breed by his older sisters Hannah and Sarah. Both of who were showing the breed at local, state and national shows. His dad, Doug, had a Milking Shorthorn cow that was getting ready to calve and he said that if the calf was a heifer, he would give it to Sam. This is how he got his Milking Shorthorn breed started. He is an active participant in the Milking Shorthorn breed by attending the state and national shows, meetings, and conventions. He has his Buckeye Knoll Phenomenal EXP heifer due to calve this March, and hopes she will have a heifer so he can keep building his herd. Activities Sam participates in are the junior high football team and recreational soccer through the school. Out of school Sam is a member of the Ansonia 4-H Club and the Darke County Dairy 4-H Club. He is also a member of the Brown Swiss and Holstein junior societies. Along with all of these activities, Sam has responsibilities on his family farm. They include feeding cows and the heifers. He also takes his turn milking. In the fall, outside of the show ring, he can be found in the field planting and harvesting on the family’s 185 acre farm. The most memorable experience Sam has had with his Milking Shorthorn animals is when Hannah, Sarah and Sam were showing at World Dairy Expo and their heifers won the title Junior Best Three Females. Another experience happened this past fall at the All-American Dairy Show when his heifer was named Honorable Mention. His future plan is to continue showing his Milking Shorthorn animals and building his herd. Sam is excited about attending the National Convention in Massachusetts this summer and invites everyone to come to Ohio in 2016 for the Milking Shorthorn National Convention. The Milking Shorthorn cow is special to Sam because he was made so many friends

through showing Shorthorns. Sam states “that we have so much fun at shows because we are tied with such nice people. Sarah Rhoades is the fourteen-year-old daughter of Doug and Leslie Rhodes. She is an eighth grader at Ansonia Local Schools and from Greenville, Ohio. She loves her Milking Shorthorns and also loves to exhibit them throughout the show season. Sarah loves being part of the Milking Shorthorn society. She anticipates a bright future with them. Sarah was introduced to the Milking Shorthorn breed by the Cindy Climer and Casey Weiss families. She bought her first Milking Shorthorn at the Bearcreek sale. Outside of the show arena, Sarah can be found playing basketball, softball and cheering for her school. At church, she participates in the hand chime choir. She is also involved in numerous other breeds: Holstein, Brown Swiss, and Ayrshire. In her free time Sarah barrel races with her horse “Charger”. Her responsibilities on the farm include milking cows and feeding calves. She also takes care her horses and gets show cattle ready for the shows. Sarah’s future plans with the breed is to continue to build her herd by using high genetic bulls. One day, she hopes to represent the breed by being the National Milking Shorthorn Queen and represent the breed by being part of the foreign exchanged program to Australia. The most memorable experience Sarah had was the truck ride to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The seven hour trip turned into a twenty-two hour trip in minutes. They had a flat tire, engine trouble, and then a loose lug nut. She was thankful for Cindy Climer and her humorous stories. Sarah looks back now and wishes the repairs would have taken longer. Another experience she had was winning Junior Champion with her heifer Buckeye Knoll Plmamzing EXP ET at World Dairy Expo. The Milking Shorthorns are special to Sarah because she has met so many people who share the same passion as her. Only being in the breed for a short time, she has found that the breed has welcomed them with open arms. The breed has also aided

Spring 2014

her in developing lifelong friends and she is looking forward to what the future has for her. Carrie Rhoades is the youngest of the four and now it is her turn to shine! She is the ten-year-old daughter of Doug and Leslie Rhoades. She attends Ansonia Elementary School in Greenville, Ohio. She was introduced to the breed through her family when they started showing around six years ago at the county level. Now they are active at the national level. She participates by attending meetings and shows. The activities Carrie participates in are the Brown Swiss and Milking Shorthorn at the state and national level. At Ansonia Elementary she is in the T.A.G program and is starting to play basketball. She also plays on the Darke County Soccer league. She also plays the chimes and sings in the youth choir at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Carrie’s responsibilities on the farm are to feed the baby calves, which includes milk, grain, and water. She also helps her Mom cook food for the hay help. Carrie’s most memorable Shorthorn experience is the Arkansas Convention in 2012. The laser tag and the go carts along with making friends and meeting so many nice people were the highlights. The Milking Shorthorns are so special to her since her parents gave her a heifer. Carrie runs to the barn when she hears a Milking Shorthorn has calved. She never knows if the calf is going to be red, white, or roan. The markings are always a surprise to her. Her future in the breed includes staying active at the state and national levels for Milking Shorthorn and Brown Swiss. Carrie wants to be a future Milking Shorthorn Queen as well as be honored to represent the breed as the President of the national American Junior Milking Shorthorn Society some day.
