Happy Spring from Snowy Northwestern PA! This morning it didn’t feel much like spring, as I walked out the door and discovered that it was 10 degrees!! And it is almost the end of March!! Goodness I am ready for spring as I am sure that many of you are also. The last couple of months have been quite busy for AMSS and myself, with announcing the 2014 All-Americans and 2014 Jr. All-Americans, membership packets being sent and renewals coming in, to holding another successful Online Sale. In addition, we had Brian Pederson and his wife Trish attend the International Dairy Week held in Australia in January and I attended the USLGE conference to learn more about exporting in Missouri. While in Missouri, I took the opportunity to visit some of our breeders – look for my report in this issue. The coming months will be focused on various spring shows and sales and preparing for our upcoming convention in Black River Falls, Wisconsin! It will also mark my one year anniversary working with AMSS. It seems hard to believe it has been almost 10 months! Time has flown by. Recently a friend of mine was having an Origami Owl jewelry book party – this is a home sales party that was started by a 14 year old girl that allows you to make custom lockets, etc. There is a charm in the book that caught my eye and although I did not buy it this order – the message has stuck with me and I wanted to share it with you – “Find Joy in the Journey”. I find it ironic because long ago my high school class motto was “Life is a Journey not a Destination.” Then I think about all the travels that I have had in my life and I have discovered that I have been living a life full of joy especially over the last 10 months. There are definitely days when I am trying to figure something out that I think it is a pretty hard Journey, but then I call Dave Kendall or Casey Weiss and find out the answer and I am joyful that they are there to lend a helping hand. So new motto – “Life is a Journey full of Joy if you don’t view it as a Destination.” Isn’t this really what our breed, the Milking Shorthorn is about? Our breed is one that is ever evolving. Our breed has been on a Journey for hundreds of years tracing back to our roots in England. People forget that without the Milking Shorthorn’s ancestors, our beautiful nation might have failed from not having the family cow, beef and power. She was truly a remarkable cow in the past and is one now and will take us into the future. Milking Shorthorns are a breed Cont. on pg. 24

President's Corner Hello Milking Shorthorn enthusiasts! When the thermometer hits forty degrees in West Central Ohio the season of spring begins, which at my homestead means the children are without socks, shoes and sometimes shirts and the sale heifers are being tied up and broke to lead in preparation for the spring sales. Spring is always a busy time of year for us on the farm but nobody seems to mind the extra outside work if the weather is pleasant. It is easy to push aside the inside desk work for more enjoyable outside chores. This brings me to my point; don't miss our upcoming deadlines for our events this summer. We are publishing a booklet which will promote our AI sires that are available through the bull studs or private treaty from breeders. The deadline to be included in this publication is April 15th. We offer many national awards that will be presented during the annual convention this June. These include the Willard E. Gerner Meritorious Brood Cow Award, Hardy Cow Awards, Cow of the Year, Milk Quality Award, Red, White & Roan Club, Gold Star Dam Award, Harry Clampitt Young Breeder Award, Citizen of the Year, and the Dual Purpose Breeder of the Year Award. All of these have a deadline of April 15th. The National Convention registration deadline is June 1, 2015 and the National Sale entries are due May 1, 2015. After a long winter I am looking forward to seeing my Milking Shorthorn friends this spring and summer!

DanSal Farm Milking Shorthorns
In mid-February, I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the USLGE (United States Livestock Genetics Export, Inc.) annual meeting and training conference to learn more about exporting. I spent three days networking with other livestock exporters, in particular the key people in the six other dairy breeds. This was held in St. Louis, Missouri. Since I was in that part of the country, I received the okay from the board to do some herd visits. So after sitting in meeting rooms in business attire, I pulled on my jeans and put my cowboy boots on and dressed warm to begin visiting some farms in the great “Show Me State” of Missouri. I drove southwest from St. Louis to the town of Graff, Missouri, to visit the DanSal Farm owned by Dan and Sally Burd. When I arrived, Dan met me with a welcoming grin and asked the question that I probably won’t ever forget – “Why is it when someone comes from the national office whether it be a herd visit or classification – do we have such cold and horrible weather?” He was referring to that being the week that the temperatures were well below normal including in St. Louis being around zero. Being a Pennsylvania girl – I laughed and asked Dan, “Here I thought you were trying to make me feel at home and trust me – I thought that it would be warmer here!” We became quick friends after teasing each other as I proceeded to climb into his farm truck that truly was just like home. We drove over to the pasture and drove around looking at various cows and heifers in four different pasture areas. I was even treated to some cows getting out through the gate that we had left open and had to chase back in – just like home! Dan and Sally are milking just over 80 head of Milking Shorthorns. These were some of the first two-year-old GE Panorama Royal Trebles and Kundes Golden Logic Adventures that I had seen in their natural setting. The Trebles have a district color of slightly red-orange that makes them stand out. These were smaller-framed cows and Dan stated that they are milking quite well for him. He has also had some adult Hard Core Othello Moonshines that I was

impressed with. Other bulls Dan has been using over the past two years include Mookin Brunos Zeus, GE Kulp-Gen PJ Cowboy, North Stars Presto ET EXP, Spungold-R CD Playboy ET and Zena Kourt Zippo. He has used a lot of Cowboy and the calves are on the ground and he is looking forward to see what they will bring to his herd. The Burds do raise some of their own bulls for breeding. DanSal is a commercial herd and Dan’s breeding choices are focused on milk production, components and in particular maintaining a low SCC. I quite enjoyed my first official farm visit with Dan being my tour guide. My second stop on my visits was about 20 miles away at Ernst Roth’s Lorreda Swiss Farm in Grove Spring, Missouri. Ernst has a herd of Brown Swiss with 20 Milking Shorthorns mixed in. When I arrived at the Roth farm, I found Ernst out feeding calves. I love looking at young stock and Ernst had some sweet heifers in his pens. Currently most of his young heifers are sired by GE Panorama Royal Treble and Spungold R Frolic Poker-ET. Ernst is looking to develop his cows to be high in milk production and is extremely concerned about what his components are. Ernst moved to the United States from Switzerland 14 years ago. His operation is a commercial herd with the cattle being on pasture with a bunk and parlor. He has used extensive crossbreeding, Australian Bulls, GE and herdbook Milking Shorthorn bulls. Bulls being used on the farm include GE Bosgowan BonJovi, Gold Mine Frost Kourt, Blissful Teds Spurgeon ET and GE Gold Mine RT Badger. Ernst views his Milking Shorthorns as being a

dual purpose breed that can milk. He likes his cows to be strong, larger-framed and dairy. He wants them to not be frail cows and is concerned with not enough Milking Shorthorns staying more dual purpose. We did talk about the Syndicate Committee and AMSS Board looking at getting more full herdbook sires into the stud companies. My next stop was crossing the border out of Missouri into Oklahoma to visit Diane Cook at Hilltop Farms. I arrived just as Diane and her worker were finishing milking. Diane and I jumped on a four wheeler and went out into pasture to look at her cattle. Hilltop has a dairy operation and a beef operation. In recent years, Diane has sold more of her older Milking Shorthorns for various reasons. She still has around 20 – 25 head of Milking Shorthorns down from her near-60 head in 2013. More of her cows are now Brown Swiss and crossbreds. Diane loves big-framed dairy cows that milk. She has purchased a few cows from the Clayside dispersal sale. She is a fan of the Clayside Academy Rebel bull which she had on her farm at one point. Diane normally raises a bull for some breeding on the farm. I enjoyed my visit with Diane and discussing how she loves big-framed cows that will milk. To Diane, her animals are her life and they are family. She has several cows that are no longer producing but are in their late teens and she tells me they have been good to her and they deserve to live their life out in a comfortable environment with plenty of feed. We had quite a discussion regarding having more full herdbook bulls available for breeding and she is concerned that our breed may be getting too far away from our roots. Interesting to me is that two of the three farms I had visited so far had this thought. By now it was getting quite dark and cold, as Diane and I stepped

into her milk house to talk more. Leaving Hilltop Farms in the dark, I headed the 20 or so miles to Gravette, Arkansas, to stay overnight and visit Valley View Farm owned by Tim Crawley. Tim and Nicki were not home when I arrived, but their daughters Jessica and Brittany were and they made me feel at home after the long day. Jessica provided me with supper and by the time I was done eating, Tim and Nicki arrived home from their meeting. The next morning, Tim was scheduled to do breeding so off we went in the farm truck. The Crawleys have a herd of around 225 milking head with about 130 being Milking Shorthorns and the rest Holsteins. They have a freestall barn for the milk cows and milk in a parlor. The calves are raised in hutches before being moved to group hutches then pastures for the various ages. Tim’s brother Russell is back working on the farm with Tim and in May, Tim’s nephew will be coming back to the farm to be the herdsman. At the farm, I was quite impressed with Tim’s attention to detail on his breeding plans. He offered to let me stay in his medical/breeding room but I wanted to look at cows, so I was with him in the free stalls. We were able to talk about the different cows and bulls that he has been using. Sires in the Crawley herd include GMC Rebel Logic ET, Kulp-Gen Jurist Ace-ET, North Stars Presto ET EXP, GE Panorama Royal Treble, Mysha-Wo Advent Liriano-ET and Blissful Teds Spurgeon ET. In addition, he has had several herd bulls that he used. Tim is concerned with milk production and components when picking sires. Tim had a different view on the size of Milking Shorthorns; he likes his cows not to be over 1,400 pounds because he believes they are not as efficient when they are larger. I left the Crawleys around noon and headed north back into Missouri to Appleton City to visit Paul and Marian Wheeler of Ridge View Acres. By the time I arrived at the Wheelers, it had begun to snow and sleet some. Paul and I went to look at his 30 head of Native Milking Shorthorns. He focuses more on the cow-calf grazing herd and is quite proud of his cows. He raises bulls to use for breeding and currently has
Ridge View Candy Man 96-N-P and Ridge View RD Able 1003 N-P that he has been using. Paul and Marian were full of the history of the breed and excited about their cattle tracing back to the Coates herdbook. They are also quite proud of being able to donate beef from their cows to the local community to support a fundraising effort. Although their herd today is small in number, they are an outstanding group of cattle with a solid frame and good feet and legs. Their cows remind me of the cows that we had on our farm when I was growing up - a good solid cow, good udder that produces well with a good set of feet and legs. I was quite impressed with my first visit to a Native herd and look forward to seeing more of this segment of our breed. As I left the Wheelers', Marian called ahead to my next stop since the weather was turning quickly worse. A drive that should have been a nice hour and half turned into much longer as I had my first experience with freezing rain and accumulating ice in Missouri. Being a Pennsylvania girl, storms do not concern me to drive in, however this ice is not something I was used to. I did arrive safely in Sedalia, Missouri, at the Nile Valley Farm operated by Doyle and Alice Hendrickson. I think that I might have given Doyle quite a workout as he was pacing the floor concerned about my safety, which I greatly appreciate. The Hendricksons have 100 head of grazing Milking Shorthorns. Doyle milked his herd until the day he turned 65 when he stopped milking and turned the herd into a cow-calf grazing herd. Although the herd is not Native, Doyle has the records that trace his herd back to a grandfather that imported the Shorthorns from England and later sold the cattle to Doyle’s other grandfather. The second grandfather did not view registration papers as important, therefore the Native status cannot be traced. The Hendricksons have records on their cattle that rival any large business. I was very impressed with the various items that they track on their cattle. Beyond the normal pedigree information, each calf at birth is weighed, measured and tagged. A calf was born the morning that I was there and Doyle and Alice were right in the barn
taking care of the items that needed to be recorded. The various items recorded are repeated throughout the life of the animal at weaning, at yearling and mature. By recording these measurements they are able to track the rate of gain on their cattle. In addition, their measurements are used for culling out the traits that they do not want in their herd. The Nile Valley Formula for Working Type Animals includes vigor, udder quality, body condition, good feet and legs, calving ease and temperament (a necessity that cannot be overlooked). Another management practice that the Hendricksons use is testing their cattle by Igenity, which is a DNA test that allows them to understand and manage the potential for their animals to perform and transmit traits of economic importance. The profile includes: Caracass Composition, Carcass Quality, Maternal and Reproductive traits, average daily gain, feed efficiency, docility, coat color and horned/ polled. I found the wealth of information that the couple has amassed as impressive. Their cattle are quite impressive and I fell in love with a cow and her calf that I would have been willing to bring home to Pennsylvania. They are medium-framed cows with correct feet and legs and nice udders. I believe that if Doyle wanted to start milking again, he would be quite profitable. This was my last stop on my trip and I hated to leave, but I was flying out of Kansas City, Missouri, to go back home. On my three days of visits, I traveled 888 miles, visiting three states and six different breeders. As you can see, the range of what the breeders' goals are for their herds are quite different and all equally impressive. I can appreciate what each breeder is striving for on their farm and in what direction they are taking their cattle. This is another incredible thing about our breed, it definitely has a place for everyone whether it is commercial, Native or grazing. I want to thank all of the farms that I visited for their hospitality and to the Crawleys and Hendricksons for inviting me to stay at their homes. I am looking forward to the next set of farm visits that I will be able to do.

2nd Annual Milking Shorthorn National Online Sale 2015 After a very successful National Online Sale, the AMSS would like to thank all of the consignors. Without you, this sale would have not been possible. We would also like to thank all of the buyers, without you this sale would not have been such a success. With five live lots of very high quality cattle and outstanding pedigrees consigned, only one of those lots sold. That was Lot #5 Twillow Zues Lilly- ET consigned by Michelle Upchurch of California. There was a lot of fast and furious bidding on this outstanding lot as the minutes wound down;
Carrie Ritchard of Wisconsin came out on top with a winning bid of $3550. We offered two embryo lots with the high seller Lot #6, GMC Rebel Logic ET X Mysha R-H Dimples EXP ET from Mapleton Valley Farms of Wisconsin. Carrie Ritchard was once again on top with the winning bid of $425ea. There were twenty-two lots of semen available from a wide variety of bulls; including native, milk and type bulls averaging $12 a unit. The high selling semen lot was Lot #17S Rovin Ali RRob Alrite EXPP consigned by Brian Pederson of Minne-
sota. Eddie Hatfield of Mississippi, was the winning bidder of this lot at $33 a unit. In conclusion we believe this sale was a huge success; we sold 86% of the lots consigned! As the sale continues to grow in popularity with over fifty registered bidders and buyers from eight different states including Wisconsin, California, Illinois, Mississippi, Texas, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and North Carolina going to show that the love for the Red, White and Roan is nationwide! that can suit many breeders’ needs today, whether it is the show ring, the milk tank, crossbreeding, grazing, dual purpose, cowcalf or Native. To that end, with the blessing of the AMSS Board, I have been ramping up the promotion of our breed as many of you may have noticed by the promotional advertising being done in various dairy publications. A new brochure has been created and several promotion items are in stock. I know that this is being effective, with groups contacting me to request promotional items to be sent to them to use at dairy days and at cattle sales. I was fortunate enough to have Shirley Wagner and her family and Suzanne Lois set up and man a booth at the Grazing Conference in Wisconsin back in January. Our presence there was well received. These breeders and supporters were able to promote without me having to be there. So a special thanks to them. Recently, a young lady from Massachusetts requested some copies of our recent AMSS ads with promo-

tional materials so that she could display the ads to help promote the breed. This is what we need! In Memorium Edwin D. Stoll Edwin D. Stoll, 75, of Chestnut, Illinois, passed away Friday, March 6, 2015, at his home. Edwin was born Feb. 6, 1940, in Lincoln to Richard and Reva Schmidt Stoll. He married Lorene Tendick on June 17, 1962, in Mt. Pulaski. She survives. He is also survived by his son, William (Julie) Stoll of Mt. Pulaski; two daughters, Debra (Tim) Smith of Houston, Texas, and Janet (James) Sampson of Pleasant Plains; sister, Barbara (Bill) Himley; nine grandchildren: Chelsea, Meghan and Jacob Stoll, Brendon and Ashley Gerdes, Ryon and Cody Smith, Britney Cowan, and Pam (Damian) Larson; and one great-grandson, Brayton Larson. Ed was a lifelong farmer and was active in the community serving on various boards including the Illinois Milking Shorthorn Society, Logan County Farm Bureau, Agland FS Board, Beason Grade School Board and the Chestnut Men's Club. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Chestnut where he served as trustee for several years. Ed was an avid bowler and bowled for over 50 years. He loved his family and enjoyed them being around. Services were held March 11, 2015.

Kenneth Harold (Kenny) Korn Kenneth Harold (Kenny) Korn, feisty brother, favorite uncle, and caretaker of friends and animals passed away on March 7, 2015. Born on April 18, 1953 in Nebraska, Kenny was raised on his parents' farm in Nampa, Illinois, and helped build it into Korncrest Farms praised for its registered dairy cattle herd, high quality milk, farm fresh eggs and prize winning animals. He graduated from Vallivue High School where he was active in both 4-H and Future Farmers of America. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 3 ½ years from the University of Idaho and returned home to continue to work with his animals. His favorite time of year was spring and summer where he could incubate various fowl, grow poppies, and enjoy family get-togethers with swimming, fireworks and the latest adult beverage. He broke his neck in 1982 during one of his mischievous adventures but didn't let that stop him from returning to his work to help his dad and brother with the farm. As Pop's health began to fail, Kenny took on the primary responsibility to care for his parents and helped them enjoy their last years in the way they wanted. This was a great task for anyone who knew Mother! As the encroachment of the city moved in, Kenny moved to New Plymouth

where he continued his egg business delivering to several valley markets. He also raised Beulingo cows and sheep. Kenny supported FFA and 4H throughout his life and helped kids by producing and selling high quality animals for show, including Korncrest Pacesetter. He gave his time and expertise to choose the best and guide the next generation in animal husbandry, quality and showmanship. Though Kenny never married or had children of his own, he was definitely the favorite uncle in the family. He was the instigator of mostly legal "fun" in the family, but was also the one that each kid or sibling went to when they needed advice and guidance. Kenny is survived by his brothers, Jerry, Richard (Kim), Les (Carolyn), his sister, Paula (Casey) McMullen and multiple nieces and nephews. Kenny is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Lois, and his nephew, Mike. A funeral celebration of Kenny's life was held on Friday, March 13th. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Vallivue or New Plymouth FFA. Also, Kenny would have asked you to work hard, laugh often, avoid the norm and toast one to him!

Junior Spotlight by Nicholas Achen
John Achen is the 14-year-old son of Craig and Cindy Achen of Aberdeen, South Dakota. He is an eighth grader at Groton Area High School. He is the third youngest in the Achen Family household. John enjoys football and dairy judging. He has a passion for both Milking Shorthorns and Holsteins. He also loves the dairy knowledge competitions held at National Conventions. Achen’s responsibilities on the farm include helping his mom care for the young stock. John also likes to help his brother Jacob with miscellaneous jobs around the Warner Dairy Farm. His favorite thing to do, though, is to help get cattle ready for the show. The Milking Shorthorn cattle originated from his mother's 4-H project. John also has to give credit to his older brother Jacob for allowing him to have Mitzy as his 4-H project. By having a Milking Shorthorn as a 4-H project, it sparked his interest in this wonderful breed.
One of John’s favorite experiences with the Milking Shorthorn breed was walking on the wood shavings for the first time this past fall with Cherrywood Mitzy. The most memorable time for John with his Milking Shorthorn Mitzy was winning Reserve Junior Champion Milking Shorthorn of the 4-H Show. For John the Milking Shorthorn breed is special because of the breed's temperament, their great milk quality, and their durability. They also mean a lot to him because his mother showed them when she was a kid and he wants to do the same. Achen’s future plans are to be active in FFA. He hopes to one day have his own farm that has a show barn full of Registered Milking Shorthorns and Registered Holsteins. John also plans to stay involved in the dairy industry by attending national conventions and applying for scholarships.
Hey Juniors! There will be a Jeopardy contest at National Convention. All answers can be found in the Journal and the 2014 Virginia 4-H Jeopardy and Quiz bowl. Prizes will be awarded! The day is yet to be determined and will be announced at the Convention.

ANNUAL MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT 2015 TO: All members of the American Milking Shorthorn Society You are hereby notified that the Annual Meeting of the American Milking Shorthorn Society will be held Friday, June 19, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the Best Western Arrowhead Lodge, 600 Oasis Road, Black River Falls, Wisconsin. To be eligible to vote you must be a paid Adult or Associate Member thirty (30 ) days before the meeting. For 2015, the date is May 20, 2015. The ballot to elect delegates will be mailed separately. Delegates are chosen from the ballot to represent you and your District with the right and duty to vote on all matters that are presented at the Annual Meeting. Remember, you may vote if you are present at the Annual Meeting. Business to come before the membership at the Annual Meeting includes: 1. Reports from the President and Committees on programs and policies of the society discussed by the Board of Directors and subsequent action taken. 2. Election of Directors to fill seats vacated by Casey Weiss, Billy Lattire, Brian Pederson and John Anderson. Casey Weiss, John Anderson and Billy Lattire are eligible for re-election. Quilting with a Passion
Jaylene Garbig of Greenville, Ohio, wears many hats – she is a grandmother, a longtime employee of her county’s board of education, and a quilting enthusiast. Many National Convention goers may remember the two beautiful quilts that were sold in the Fun Auction last year to benefit the 2016 National Convention in Ohio. Those quilts, adorned with famous Milking Shorthorn heifers and cows, were Jaylene’s handiwork. This year, at the National Convention in Wisconsin, two more quilts of Jaylene’s will be auctioned to again benefit the National Convention in Ohio next year. Jaylene is the proud grandmother of Hannah, Sarah, Sam and Carrie Rhoades of Buckeye Knoll Farm, also of Greenville, Ohio. She also has many “grandcows” that she enjoys playing with. She likes being near the farm so she can visit the calves – but, “I let the kids handle the big ones!” Jaylene has been quilting for 15 years now, when she took a quilting class. While in the class, she made a quilt with a barn. However, the quilts she donated last year were her first cow-themed quilts. Her
daughter, Leslie Rhoades, helped her with the idea of the cow quilt to benefit the convention. She is very appreciative with the tightknit Milking Shorthorn community. “Last year we had a lot of problems going to the National Convention,” she recalls. There were several roadblocks, including flat trailer tires and more. “All we had to do was make one phone call, and we had help on the way.” The community has been equally helpful in the design of Jaylene’s quilts. Jaylene herself does not come from a dairy background. Leslie met Doug Rhoades in high school, and they began dating after college. They now operate Buckeye Knoll with their children. Jaylene has consulted many breeders to decide which cows should be on the 2015 quilt. She worked with Junia Isiminger to come up with the final theme: Grand Champions, Junior Grand Champions and Junior Champions of National Shows and National Junior Shows in 2014. The quilt will include Innisfail ST Emily 864 EXP (Northeast National), Innisfail RO Lady 906 EXP (Northeast National Junior & International Junior), Kuszmar Megadeth Poppy (Eastern National), Buckeye Knoll Phenomenal EXP (Eastern National Junior), Redien Acres JR (Winter National) and Halpins IH (Winter National Junior). The quilt will also feature GMC DL Dairybar EXP (Northeast National), Hard Core Premium Fire Maid EXP (East-
ern National and Winter National) and Lazy M Pirelli Got It EXP (International), a total of 10 animals on one quilt. This year’s quilt will be of the same pattern and colors as last year’s. Jaylene gets her cow patches printed locally, and they are specially done so they won’t fade in the wash. Jaylene’s days of cow quilting aren’t over with this convention. She is already planning a famous Milking Shorthorn Bulls quilt for 2016. To be sure she chooses the correct list of top ten bulls that have been influential in the breed. She is asking for help from Milking Shorthorn breeders. If you would like to help Jaylene, please send your top 15 list of favorite, famous and/or influential bulls of all time to the AMSS Bull Quilt, 23515 Range Road, Union City, PA 16438 by September 1, 2015. National Convention Tour Highlights! Jerry, Shirley & Brandon Wagner and family Wagner Family Farm N5228 Cloverdale Rd. Black River Falls, WI 54615 (715) 284-2606 clvrvly@centurytel.net The Wagner Family Farm is a Certified Organic grazing herd that takes pride in its out-of-the-ordinary practices. The Wagners consider themselves “Minnesota transplants,” having bought the farm in Black River Falls in 1987. A few Milking Shorthorn heifers were purchased at a state sale in the interest of finding a better-grazing breed. The Wagners began breeding all of their Holsteins to Milking Shorthorn bulls about 15 years ago, and now the milking herd consists of around 85 Milking Shorthorns and crosses. They chose to grade their Holsteins up into Milking Shorthorns because they “wanted a good grazing animal…with better components.” The farm is 211 acres, with an additional 185 acres rented, about 109 used for grazing. All animals at all stages of life are grazed at the Wagner farm. The Wagners like to take a low-labor approach to farming. All calves are raised on surrogate dams, which are out on pasture in good weather. This means growthy calves, and the surrogate dams teach the calves good eating habits, which is only exponential to their growth. “The health of the calf is amazing [on a surrogate],” notes Shirley. The Wagners very rarely use AI, preferring to use good-pedigreed herd bulls purchased from either state sales or notable herds. They have used sons of Zeus, Red Robin and Lothario from herds such as RoVin Acres, Landsbrook, and Mapleton Valley.
Wagner cows primarily graze, with TMR and hay supplements as well as a very small amount of grain. They eat at bunks, again to minimize labor. The cows switch pastures twice a day. The Wagners began grazing because they felt the farm was ideal for such a management style. They also enjoy the reduced labor and vastly increased health of their animals. After experiences with several breeds, the Wagners believe that Milking Shorthorns are the ideal grazing breed. Jerry and Shirley and their son Brandon are the primary employees of the farm. Jerry does the milking, Brandon is in charge of pasturing as well as feeding, and Shirley feeds heifers and trains them to get used to the lifestyle of rotational grazing. Brandon’s wife Mindy and their four children also participate in relief milking and chores around the farm. Jerry and Shirley’s daughters Holly and Amy live close and pitch in when they can. Jerry and Shirley and Brandon and Mindy make sure that each other gets every other weekend off. The Wagners also compost, and Brandon has begun an on-farm composting business. The Wagner’s unique style of farming and grazing earned them a feature in Country Today, a well-known farm paper. The Wagners enjoy showing at county fairs as well as the Minnesota State Fair. Their expert ability in raising calves earned one of their April 2014 calves, Nymans Kiner Sylver, a 2nd place win at the Minnesota State Fair in 2014. This special calf was sired by a Lothario son from the RoVin herd and bears the prefix of daughter Holly. “We want to welcome everybody to the farm to stroll through the garden, walk through the pastures, and enjoy lunch with us!”
The Ruzic Family RoVin Acres W14584 St. Rd. 121 Hixton, WI 54635 (715) 984-2211 Vince and Rozanne Ruzic established RoVin Acres in 1974. Their Milking Shorthorn herd began with a single cow, ClaraBell, owned by Rozanne. ClaraBell’s easy temperament lead Vince and Rozanne to purchase more Milking Shorthorns from the Woodward family to develop their own herd. Since 2008, RoVin Acres has been managed by Vince and Rozanne’s son Pat with his wife Carol and their children. The family maintains a milking herd of around 40 cows, all Milking Shorthorn with the exception of two Ayrshires. Carol Ruzic describes the family roles as entirely collaborative, with “everyone help[ing] out to get all jobs done.” The Ruzics have achieved several honors in their 40 years of Milking Shorthorn dairying, including RoVin Lira Allison-EXP-P EX-91, the top-producing Polled cow in the country in 2013, as well as Snowhite, the only cow in the breed with 10,000F lifetime. They are also proud of RoVin Alise Clay Ali-P, who produced over 100 embryos in her life. Another shining example of the Ruzic’s excellent herd is RoVin Lacy MTitan Lucy-EXP, the junior champion of the 2013 Winter National Show. Some of the Ruzic’s current favorite sires include Disney, Liriano, Abner and Alrite. “We hope to see you at the 2015 National Convention, and we welcome you to our farm for a tour and lunch.”
