The Executive Report

Hello Milking Shorthorn Breeders, The National Convention is right around the corner and I am excited to be seeing many of our members at the convention. A year ago, I was trying to learn many names and faces and trying to figure out exactly where I was to be when and with what. This year as I prepare for Convention, I am trying to figure out everything that I need to have in place to be sure that I am ready for it! I have lists upon lists to try and be sure that I am as prepared as I can be for that busy week. The best part will be seeing you the breeders! The past year has been a learning year for me and I have been fortunate to have many supportive people helping along the way. This organization does not run with just one person, it operates with many people helping and volunteering to get the job done. As I reflect over the past year, I find that I keep coming back to a list – a list of the top 10 things that I have discovered this past year. 1. AMSS has an excellent Board of Directors that are willing to help, give advice and lend their assistance in their specialties whenever I need them. This past year was truly a better experience because I have a 12-member board that wants to see the Society succeed and in turn, me be successful in my job. 2. The Milking Shorthorn breed is unique in that there is room for every breeder, whether they are breeding for commercial dairy, show ring, native, beef, grazing or cow-calf. There are also those that are interested in doing breeding for genetic expansion and those that are interested in breeding full herdbook. Our breed is special in that we have space for everyone depending on what their goals are in their herds. 3. From traveling around the country, we are fortunate to live in such a beautiful country with each state having its own unique landscape and farming practices. 4. My two most asked questions have been – how can I be talking to you if you are in Pennsylvnaia when I called the Wisconsin office? The answer to this is that the calls are forwarded to my cell phone. And secondly – where do I send ( fill in the blank here)? The answer to this is – we are making a change and everything will be coming to me at the Union City, Pennsylvania, address – payments, registrations, transfers, etc. I believe this change will be better for you, the breeders. 5. My biggest challenges in this job have been learning all the different computer systems that the organization uses and getting procedures in place to make sure that you, the breeders, are taken care of. There is still work to be done in this area, but I am in a much better position today than I was a year ago. 6. Accepting that I can’t always answer a question right at that minute, because I don’t know. Fortunately I have a great group of individuals that I can call on for help to find answers – not only board members but others as well. I am the type of person who wants to be able to help you right when you call so I feel bad when I can’t, but I do know more now and I can answer Cont. on pg. 20

President's Corner Make plans to attend the upcoming annual meeting of the American Milking Shorthorn Society. At the meeting we will be unveiling the new True Type Milking Shorthorn cow painting by renowned artist Gary Sauder. Gary has worked diligently with the AMSS Board of Directors over the last several years on the new breed standard. Gary will also be in attendance to unveil and elaborate on the cow's development. At the most recent Purebred Dairy Cattle Association Board of Directors meeting, the Show Ring Code of Ethics was revised and adopted. The rule change falls under Grooming and Preparation, with a new addition stating that “changing the natural color of the animal is prohibited.” The full rule now reads: “Changing the natural color of the animal is prohibited. However, external applications of cosmetics that affect only appearance may be used, including by way of example hoof polishes and false switches.” This change is effective June 1, 2015. While it has not been a major issue in our breed, this has been occurring in several other breeds. The full Show Ring Code of Ethics is available on the PDCA website.

Junia’s Journeys

Gold Mine Farm Milking Shorthorns

Recently I spent time in Wisconsin and while there was able to work in some herd visits. I was in Wisconsin to attend the Wisconsin Dairyland Sale and work in the Beloit office. I saw Jody Nus at the presale picnic and she asked if I was going to be able to come to Gold Mine Farm for a farm visit. After discussing it – we worked out for me to visit on Sunday, April 26th. As I approached Gold Mine Farm, owned by Nathan and Jody Nus, I entered Iowa expecting flatland and discovered that I was entering Arlington, Iowa, “Where the Prairie Meets the Hills” and it was quite hilly land. As I listened to my handy GPS, it quickly directed me to the local treatment plant. Technology isn’t always right, so I continued on the road I was on and came to an intersection where I could look up on to a large hill and see some red and white and roan cows laying in a pasture beside a barn – YEAH! Success in finding the farm. Jody welcomed me to the farm and we started our tour. The Gold Mine prefix traces back to 1887 and most recently to Jody’s grandparents, Maurice & Bonnie Meyer. When she married Nathan, they kept the prefix and began their herd with Jody’s Milking Shorthorns. The Nus’ have a tie-stall barn that holds 40 adult cows. Currently they are milking 39 head – most of the cows are Milking Shorthorns or Genetic Expansion Milking Shorthorns. They do have Jerseys and a Holstein in the herd. The Nus’ had the Top Genetic Expansion Cow in 2013,

Gold Mine S Lonox Stardust 776, who was fresh again in November with a bull calf and is milking over 100 lbs. a day. She is quite a cow to be proud of. Nathan and Jody raise all their own feed that consists of hay, corn and sometimes beans. They are farming 500 acres and the land is rocky and flat. Nathan’s family, his grandparents, parents, brother and sister are all farmers, covering three farms, and live nearby. The Nus’ make their own grain mix including their heifer feed. Currently, Jody is using the sires Abner P, C-Tie, Presto, Ironman, Pirelli, Cody P, Adventure, Patriot, Spurgeon, and Parly to name a few. They breed aggressively, taking advantage of the Genetic Expansion program. Their goal is to have good cows that milk. The Nus’ continue to develop their own bulls and do sell semen from them. Currently they have eight more on their way to see where their genetics can take them. They have sold bulls into the stud companies including Accelerated Genetics and Select Sires. The Nus’ aren’t only successful in breeding but also in winning numerous AMSS awards in 2014 including: Maurice Meyer Memorial Progressive Performance Herd Award for Group 2, Gold Milk Quality Award and several W.J. Hardy Lifetime Production Awards. Jody loves the Milking Shorthorn breed because there is a place for everyone and all are welcome, which makes our breed unique. Nathan and Jody breed for high production and good cows. I asked Jody about any suggestions she would have for AMSS and she feels that promoting crossbreeding in commercial herds by using Milking Shorthorns is an area that needs to be encouraged. As our tour was coming to a close, Jody suggested that I go and visit Larry Landsgard in Saint Olaf, Iowa. She

Milking Shorthorn Journal Summer 2015

was kind enough to make the call and I was on my way the 30 miles to Lands-Brook Farm. I arrived to find Larry quite willing to show me his cows. Larry is not the typical Milking Shorthorn breeder – his main breed is Holstein. He only has one family of Milking Shorthorns and it has been quite an excellent one. Larry is a true breeder of fine dairy cattle by having at one time the only 95-point Holstein in Iowa while also having a 96-point Milking Shorthorn at the same time. That great cow was LandsBrook Christina EXP ET, the 2014 Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo. She was 10 years old and had been chasing that prized banner for years – many times she was close but didn’t get that Champion banner until 2014. Unfortunately, she only lived eight days with the title and then was buried on the farm. Interestingly enough, the Milking Shorthorn family that Larry owns began from purchasing a calf and then discovering that it traced back to the Gold Mine Farm, whose owners just happened to be best friends with the Landsgards. Sometimes, fate steps in and brings people where they need to be. This cow family has bred numerous All-Americans and won repeatedly in the show ring. Larry, with his nephew, milks 45 cows in a tie-stall barn. At one point, Larry got out of the milking business by selling all his cows in 1994, then he began buying heifers to raise and that is when he came onto a little Milking Shorthorn calf that changed everything. As we toured

At Lands-Brook Farm - Christina's wall of fame

around the farm, I was able to see Cancun, Cherokee, Chippewa, Christlyn plus many others from the Christie (Christina’s Dam) family. Bulls being used, or have been used by Larry include Nitro, Pirelli, Zumba, Mudslinger, Cyclone (from the Christina line), Clancy (from the Christina line), Parti-Time and C-Tie. He has some interesting embryos to be born in September out of Othello and Cherokee – those calves are sure to be something special. The Landsgard family farms 450 acres and grow all their own feed including hay, corn, soybeans and make straw. Larry operates the dairy with a nephew who will be taking over the dairy. Crops are raised by his brother and two more of his nephews. Before I left, I was given a gift by Larry. He allowed me to enter his home and see the many awards he has on display – it is incredible to see what one cow family did for a well-known and respected Holstein breeder. Interestingly, the Landsgard family has only been showing for 15 years! What that cow family did was produce offspring that are still influencing our breed today and many of the cow family still reside on the farm. As I was leaving Wisconsin on the following Tuesday, I made a stop at the MikesDar Farm in Harvard, Illinois, owned by the Gregory family. Betty and David Gregory have two sons, Mike and Darrin. Darrin operates the dairy with David’s help and Mike’s son, Colton. Although this is the first time I had been to Darrin’s farm, I had actually met him before working for AMSS by being tied next to him and the Byer family from Iowa at World Dairy Expo in 2013. We started our tour looking at Darrin’s great group of calves in the hutches. The first calf that caught my eye is a September Storm out of a Prince of Diamonds – she is a fancy one and it will be interesting to see how she develops. The Gregorys milk 62 cows with an average of 74 pounds a day. The barn holds 57 with half being stanchions and half tiestalls. The overflow cows are housed in a section of the heifer barn. The heifer barn is a pack barn and they are fed TMR. All the cows are identified with RFID tags and

he milk tests monthly. The herd consists of Holsteins, Red and White Holsteins and about one-third Milking Shorthorns. Darrin is an aggressive breeder by pregnancy checking everything at 25-28 days bred, then ultra-sounding at 53-57 days. The vet is on the farm monthly keeping the reproduction in line. Darrin said ultra-sounding pays off because he is able to make decisions if a cow may not be performing well by knowing whether she is carrying a heifer or a bull. Darrin chooses bulls on his cows that are going to keep them larger. Having the Milking Shorthorns in with Holsteins makes having the larger-framed cows work better in his herd. As Darrin and I walked in his paddock to look at the cows, he pointed out a cow that was a Liriano out of Champagne (back to Larry Landsgard). She is milking around 25,000 pounds. She was an embryo that he purchased at the Wisconsin sale back a few years ago. He also was quick to point out some cows that he houses belong to Jerry King. Another case of Milking Shorthorn breeders helping each other out. The largest concern of David’s is to be sure that their breeding is producing offspring that have the components and milk production to make dairying viable. Darrin has been using one of his own bulls for breeding, Mikes-Dar Titan ET who sired the Jr. All-American Fall Yearling in 2014. He has also used Destry Lad, Prince of Diamonds, Lilyhill, Lothario and Lance. He has heavily used various Innisfail bulls. I can see that Darrin has a future in breeding some great Milking Shorthorn bulls and

A Kourt daughter at Boks.

I hope that he continues to sell semen to other breeders. The farm consists of 40 acres and the Gregorys rent 150 tillable acres and 180 acres for hay. One and half years ago, they switched to TMR feeding and have seen a 3,000 lb. rolling herd average increase. They plant corn, hay and winter rye which they make into silage. In early May, I traveled to Indiana to attend a conference and on my way home, I made a stop at the Samuel and Julie Bok farm in Defiance, Ohio. The farm is a 420head milking herd with 40 Milking Shorthorns and a few Brown Swiss with the balance of the herd being Jerseys. They are milked in a double-12 parlor and are housed in a free stall barn. Last fall, the Boks added a new calf barn to make Julie’s job easier – it is quite impressive with adjustable vents in the ceiling, paneled curtains and a heated floor. Julie and Sam were both raised on Holstein farms but Sam likes Jerseys and Julie’s grandfather and uncle had Milking Shorthorns, so they both have their dream in what breed is milked on the farm. The Milking Shorthorns have various lineage but there is one in the barn that is a Rosalyn cow that traces back to Casey Weiss’ grandfather. The Brown Swiss trace back to their new daughter-in-law’s grandpa's herd. Their children, Wendy and Andrew, both work on the farm with their parents and four additional part-time workers. Wendy is the herdsman and Andrew is the feeder. Cows are housed on six different farms. The milk cows and baby calves are on the main farm. They own 620 acres and rent an additional 450 acres. They do buy some corn but raise corn, hay, wheat and beans for use on the farm. Everything is bred Select Sires and the Boks concern is not having enough herdbook bulls that are improving the breed and not making enough milk to keep them in Sam’s herd. Wendy and Sam agree that having good milk bulls that have a calving ease and produce cows with good udders are important. Their most recent bulls have been Stanley, Blaine, Hal, Cowboy Cont. on pg. 8

and Logic. They feed TMR for the Jerseys and therefore prefer smaller framed cows. They prefer their Milking Shorthorns to be around 1,400 pounds. All their heifers are bred to Jerseys regardless of breed and are bred at 12 months of age. I had quite a nice visit with Sam and Wendy, talking about my job and different things that I have been doing since becoming Executive Secretary. We had a good discussion about the challenges of finding bulls to meet the needs of all of our breeders. When the Milking Shorthorn breed has room for all depending on their needs and goals, this creates a challenge for which bulls to develop. Thank you to all the farms that I visited. They were all gracious in welcoming me and taking the time to talk about Milking Shorthorns. I am already planning my next few farm visits.

Native 'Heritage' Shorthorns ~ Nile Valley Shorthorns By Robin Alden

D

oyle Hendrickson is a goal-driven man who is just as passionate as he is knowledgeable about the Shorthorn breed. Doyle owns and operates Nile Valley Farm with his wife Alice and son John. Nile Valley has been a grazing cow/ calf operation since Doyle’s retirement from dairying at age 65. Now, the focus is on breeding moderate-sized cows who are excellent mothers. The philosophy at Nile Valley is very natural. The cows are grazed, and calves are raised on the cows. The Hendricksons moved to Missouri to escape the rampant pesticides of their previous home, Nebraska. Doyle is sensitive to pesticides and hormones himself, so it is important to him that his cows and land are free of them. The herd is also antibiotic-free and they test all calves for Tibial Hemimelia (TH). The Hendricksons usually have 75-80 cows on their pasture. They are Milking Shorthorns with some Holstein and Illawarra influence. Previously, Doyle tried to stay true to Native breeding, but he encountered problems as time went on. “I used Natives as long as I could, but the gene pool is so limited, I had hardly anywhere to go,” he lamented. He still uses Native genetics when he can. Sometimes he gets cattle from local Native breeders, and he still uses and sells semen from Meadowbrook Chieftain 9th, a classic Native bull, and Rojahns Iris NKT Lancer N ET P, a more recent Native

bull. In addition to herd bulls and AI, Doyle has used some beef shorthorn sires to increase muscling. Doyle raises some calves for market, and he claims his calves sell at the same price as the best Holstein calves. He attributes this to their increased growth, as well as his strict standards for raising cattle. Doyle measures every calf born on the farm, and he only raises those that meet his standards. This is a tradition passed on to him by his grandfather, and it has brought him success. Beef is not the only market for Nile Valley. When it comes to milk production, their biggest market is people looking for a family milk cow. “I don’t have to worry about the market,” says Doyle. “They come to me.” The Hendricksons also are able to sell to cow/calf operations like themselves. When asked about registering his cattle, Doyle laughed, “I have registered every worthy animal [with AMSS] since 1955.” Nile Valley also has eight cattle who are dual registered with AMSS and ASA, and plan on registering more this way. Doyle’s standards are not just for calves. “Every cow I have has a goal,” he said. On Nile Valley’s website, it states clearly: “Our cows must work for a living.” Doyle requires his cows to be healthy, aggressive, maternal and productive enough to raise healthy calves. “I want to keep the milking ability, because that’s the cheapest way to raise calves,” he said. All the cattle

are measured regularly in order to maintain a uniform group. Nile Valley has also dabbled in collecting semen. Doyle calls semen collection an insurance policy. “You don’t know how good a bull is until seven or eight years after he’s dead,” said Doyle. They are currently selling semen out of Nile Valley Magic Made P, whose daughters would “fit in anyone’s milking barn,” according to Doyle. It is important for the Hendricksons to be involved in the Milking Shorthorn and agricultural community. “I often say I’m involved in too many organizations,” joked Doyle. They try to attend the Milking Shorthorn National Convention every year. Doyle also belongs to the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association to keep up with current events as well as form an alliance with fellow cattle raisers. Doyle is passionate about his Shorthorns and is a firm believer that they are the ideal breed of cattle. Nile Valley has been an excellent source for red, white and roan cattle for decades now, but they only hope to improve. “This has been a learning program and always will be,” said Doyle. With their passion, high standards, and willingness to learn, Nile Valley is a shining example on how to successfully raise and market dual purpose Shorthorns. more questions right away. 7. My favorite part of my job is meeting and seeing breeders at their farms, shows and meetings. It is by far the best part – you, the breeders, make this job special. 8. My least favorite part of my job is letting a breeder down by an error that was made by myself or someone else, mistakes happening, me just not knowing something or a breeder being flustered for whatever reason. This is an area that I continue to work on and as #4, #5 and #6 above continue to be worked on – I hope that there are fewer #8’s to be concerned about. 9. That every day I learn something new and sometimes it is like a lightbulb goes on – OH! That is why this is that way. And I still have a lot to learn. 10. And the Top 10 thing is MILKING SHORTHORN BREEDERS ARE THE BEST!!!! I have had several breeders contact me recently and say “We are all FAMILY!” and isn’t that the truth - and I wouldn’t want to be in any other family than the Milking Shorthorn one! For the Love of the Red, White and Roan – Breeding for Tomorrow. See you at Convention. ~ Junia Isiminger, Executive Secretary

AMSS Questions of the Issue Do you enjoy reading Junia's Journeys? Do you think it is important for the Executive Secretary to visit farms? If your answer is yes to these questions, consider making a donation to the Executive Secretary's travel fund which goes directly to covering the costs of Junia's travel. Or, invite her to one of your upcoming shows, picnics or meetings and offer to cover part or all of her expenses. Not able to commit to that? Then offer to host her at your home when she is in the area. Every little bit helps to allow her to continue to be out in the field working with Milking Shorthorn breeders and promoting our breed. Call Junia to discuss possible ways that you can help in her travel efforts. Are you collecting a bull and want to market your semen, but not sure how to get it around the country? Consider placing some in the AMSS semen tank that travels with the Executive Secretary. As Junia makes herd visits, she has the AMSS semen tank with her and can sell semen to other breeders. For more information, contact the AMSS office.
