The Exec Report
I am very excited and honored to fill this space with my first edition of the Exec Report. The last few months have been filled with a whirlwind of challenges and lots of fun and interesting new things along the way. The opportunity to lead the Milking Shorthorn breed will be very rewarding and I look forward to continuing to improve, promote and expand the demand for the Red, White and Roan. It has been a busy few months as I settled in to this new role and fill the “large” shoes of my predecessor. My first day at the office was March 14, which began my two-week training period with David Kendall. Those two short weeks were crammed with information to operate the AMSS office. Fortunately, David has continued to be available to offer insight and answer questions along the way to ensure a smooth and seamless transition. I am very thankful for all of the help and patience everyone has given along the way as well. After many weeks in the office and communicating with breeders, I was excited to get to meet and see the faces of many of you at the National Convention. The Kansas Milking Shorthorn Breeders hosted an outstanding convention in McPherson! I would like to thank them for their hospitality and for keeping the weather calm despite the nearby storms. I had a lot of fun getting to know everyone a bit more and I look forward to continuing to meet Milking Shorthorn enthusiasts in my future travels. The meetings in Kansas were very productive and there are many new things coming to our organization that will help lead us in a positive direction. Anyone who has been involved in the breed the past several years has heard the comments or seen for themselves how much progress the Milking Shorthorn breed has made in

I recently attended several important meetings. First was the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (PDCA) meeting in Lexington, Kentucky, the second week of May. At that meeting, two vital issues were discussed. First were the requirements for entrance into World Dairy Expo this year. Bob Kaiser, Interim General Manager for World Dairy Expo, visited with the group and explained that RFID tags will be the only acceptable form of animal identification, and no animal may enter the grounds without RFID. The “900” series tags will be available for purchase on the EXPO grounds for those who do not have RFID when they arrive. This is for entrance only and all usual registrations and tattoos/ tags will be checked for showing. Following our annual meeting in Kansas, Cory will have a link on our web page where RFID tags may be purchased. The second important issue discussed at PDCA was regarding the capitalization of Genetic Evaluations now performed by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) as discussed in my last President’s Post. All participants need to pay their share so that people can be hired and the transition period begun. PDCA has decided that this will be assessed on the basis of 2012 registrations. This will amount to about $1000.00 for Milking Shorthorns for the first half of 2013. While the Executive Secretaries for Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey and Milking Shorthorn were present for the PDCA meeting, we decided that would be a good time for a visit regarding items of mutual interest and benefit. There are several areas where costs may be shared to better serve our members. Our discussions were amiable and forward thinking. Later in the week, I attended the Type Conference in Ohio. Ayrshire and Guernsey will be joining Milking Shorthorn in the Brown Swiss Classification program. At this conference, we worked animals from all four breeds and the classifiers became familiar with the Ayrshire and Guernsey systems. Greater consistency and spread of scores was accomplished which will certainly benefit all. At the next Type Conference, we will hold a joint meeting to develop a more uniform program across the breeds. By the time you read this, the Annual Meeting in Kansas will have passed. I am sure all who attended have come away with renewed enthusiasm and energy. Thanks to Kansas for a great meeting and keeping the weather cooperative! I hope that everyone had a safe and uneventful journey home and found all well once they got there. Thanks to Clint and Jody for their invaluable service to the Society during their time on the Board of Directors. I am sure you found your time of service interesting and important and the breed has certainly benefited from your careful and reasoned decisions. The Society welcomes and expects your continued support and participation in the future.

Board Actions – Summer 2013 – McPherson, Kansas Motion passed that as of January 1, 2014, to be a member in good standing, individuals must have no outstanding accounts with AMSS of greater than 60 days as determined by the Board of Directors. Explanation: The AMSS Bylaws requires members to be in good standing to vote, etc. so the Board thought it best to clearly define this. Motion passed to charge monthly interest at 1.5% on accounts over 60 days, effective July 1, 2013. This will be charged retroactively. Explanation: The Finance Committee thought this is standard policy in our industry and is looking for ways to decrease the Accounts Receivable. Motion passed to accept the Gold Star Dam award proposal including 75% daughter status effective immediately (May 2013). Explanation: The Breed Outlook Committee developed this proposal to recognize cows for their maternal contributions to the breed. This award will be a permanent recognition on the cow’s pedigree and will be listed in the Journal. Motion passed to start the On-Farm Milking Shorthorn Photo Contest. Explanation: The Breed Outlook Committee has been working on this proposal as a way to promote and recognize AMSS registered cattle for conformation outside of the show-ring. This contest will open the doors for those breeders who do not compete on the national show circuit, a chance to showcase their cattle. Similar contests are run in other parts of the World. Motion passed to have Kylie Daniels set-up a Zazzle account with a few designs and a starting cost of $100. Explanation: The Breed Outlook Committee wanted to offer access to Milking Shorthorn promotional items in a way that is easy and convenient for the office and breeders. Watch for more details in future issues of the Journal.

Motion passed to move ahead with the Bull Book, to be published in time for World Dairy Expo, half of the cost to be covered by Foundation funds and half from Promotion funds. Explanation: The AMSS will be publishing a Bull Book including only bulls with semen available that will be available to breeders at World Dairy Expo and on a request basis. There has been a demand for this from breeders for a long time and the Board thinks it will be a good marketing tool for the breed. Motion passed to have an Internet National Sale next February (exact date to be determined) in which Milking Shorthorn heifers, bulls, embryos and semen will be sold. Cataloging fee for live animals of $25 and a commission of 7.5% on all lots. Travel on live lots will be split between buyer and seller – embryos and semen will be shipped at the cost of the buyer. Explanation: The National Sale Committee wanted to find another avenue for our members to market their cattle and genetics. The Board thought this would be a good option to pursue as there will be minimal overhead costs since most advertising and promotion will be done on the internet and through social media. Motion passed to work with Gary Sauder to negotiate a contract for a total of under $6,000 to develop the true type Milking Shorthorn cow for a painting and all rights Explanation: The Education Committee has recognized that the breed has made a lot of progress since the last true type Milking Shorthorn and want our model cow to be a true representative of what the Milking Shorthorn breed offers. The Board is very excited about this project as it will bring forth a new look to our organization. Motion passed to award a $50 gift card to the winner of the logo contest and a $50 gift card to the winner of the slogan contest. Deadline to enter contest will be November 15, 2013. Explanation: Going along with the changes that have come to our organization, the Board thought it would be a good time to come up with a new logo and slogan for the AMSS to use to improve, promote and expand the demand for the Milking Shorthorn breed.
JIM KING TRIPLE CROWN AWARD Start thinking about entering your animals for the Jim King Triple Crown Award! Animals born on September 1, 2013 and beyond will be eligible to be entered for $1 at the time of registration. To win the award, which includes a $2,500 premium, the animal must win Grand Champion honors at 3 National Shows (World Dairy Expo is required) in the same calendar year.

2013 Milking Shorthorn Summer Intern
My name is Elise Krause and I am this year’s Milking Shorthorn Summer Intern. My parents are Louanne & Curtis Krause and I have two sisters Mikayla and Theresa, and one brother Clayton. My family owns and operates Krause Farms. I grew up in central Minnesota where we were milking registered Milking Shorthorns until we sold the dairy in 2006. We then moved to central Illinois where we currently crop farm corn and soybeans. Now my family is starting a new adventure and has recently purchased a dairy in Northeastern Texas. Next Fall I will be a senior at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where I am majoring in Applied Economics with a minor in
International Agriculture. At college, I am involved in the Gopher Dairy Club, Lambda Delta Phi Sorority and the International Agriculture Club. Throughout the years I have been no stranger to the breed. The first animal I purchased was a cow on the Hauxwell sale in Canada. My parents always told me to save up for a car, but I bought a cow instead. This cow family would become the family that I would show for the rest of my years as a junior member. My family and I have shown at county, state and national shows. I have attended countless national conventions, state meetings and sales. I served as the 2010 National Milking Shorthorn Queen. I have been very active in the junior society and was the national junior society secretary for two years. I have truly enjoyed all of my experiences with the great red, white and roan so far and I am excited for this summer to see a different side of the breed! A few of the projects I will be working on this summer are ani-
mal registrations, helping with the bull book and helping organize the new on-farm photo contest. I look forward to hearing from some of you throughout the summer. Sincerely, Elise Krause

Minutes from the 93rd Annual Meeting
T
he 93rd annual meeting of the American Milking Shorthorn Society was called to order at 10:41 a.m. on May 31, 2013 in McPherson, Kansas by President Susan Lee. Merle Thiessen welcomed the group to Kansas and thanked everyone for attending. Credentials Committee chairperson, Karen Bodey announced the roll call of delegates. All districts were present. A motion was made to seat the delegates and seconded. Motion passed. A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes from the 92nd annual meeting with no changes. Motion passed. Amanda Smith, Associate Editor, from Hoard’s Dairyman was introduced. There were no other special guests present. President Lee gave her address, encouraging members to speak up about questions or concerns that need to be addressed. She also thanked David Kendall for his many years of service to the AMSS and presented him with a couple gifts. President Lee spoke of the enthusiasm, energy, and dedication of the board members. She also announced the resignation of board member, Jody Nus. The new Executive Secretary, Cory Salzl, was acknowledged. Cory will be working in Beloit until July 1, 2013. Thereafter, he will be working from home. Everyone is encouraged to contact Cory as necessary. Other highlights included: • The Brown Swiss have hired a new classifier, Jennifer Clark • The Convention Committee plans to make updates to the convention planning documentation • Upcoming changes at World Dairy Expo (RFID tags required) were discussed • President Lee would like to have email addresses of all state President and Secretary members • Members were reminded to enter eligible heifers for the Jim King Triple Crown Award • Heifers will show first this year at Louisville, Kentucky (NAILE) • The Endowment Fund Committee was thanked for the $1,000 donation to the AMSS Advertising and Promotion Fund Cory Salzl presented the Executive Secretary’s report, stating that he is very excited to be serving in this new capacity. Cory started working in the office with David on March 14, 2013 and plans to continue working in Beloit until late June. Cory briefly discussed highlights for the year and noted that registrations have continued to increase. Members are encouraged to submit creative ideas regarding a new Milking Shorthorn logo and slogan. Suggestions are to be sent to Cory by November 15, 2013 for a chance to win a cash award. Cory
would like to have a current and up-to-date membership list from all state associations. He also plans to start traveling soon (farms, shows, meetings, etc.) Please let him know of upcoming events and activities. Cory concluded his remarks by noting the breed’s advancement over time and encouraged everyone to continue to promote and improve the breed. The In Memoriam report was presented by Tom Landrum to honor those that passed in the last year. The following names were recited: Cindy Climer, Jim King, Linda Ritchie, Thomas Comer, Rhonda HeCoax, William Klaber, Caroline Graham, Joyce Hiibner, Alvin Roy, Mike Kahoa, Patty Laney, William Peterson, Don Beuch, and Arlene Mathwig. A motion was made and seconded to accept the report. Motion carried. Marjorie Kuszlyk made a motion on behalf of George Halpin to renew the L.D. Day Memorial trophy at all four national shows. The motion was seconded and passed. Kylie Daniels gave the Breed Outlook report and thanked the committee members for their feedback. The committee has designed some new awards and created an “Everyday Milking Shorthorn” contest. All rules and requirements will be available on the AMSS website and results will be published in the Journal. The committee plans to continue working on customized AMSS promotional material, which includes updating all brochures and print material. Casey Weiss discussed the publication of a bull book. The Genetics and AMSS Syndicates Committee would like to publish a full-color, promotional book of bulls with semen currently available, including pictures of the bulls or their dams. The goal is to have the book printed by September 1, 2013. Please contact Casey, a committee member, or Cory with questions. Clint Cribbet entertained the idea of an online national AMSS sale as another avenue for members to market their genetics. An online option to purchase animals would also benefit those who can not attend our national meetings. Semen and embryos could also be sold. Clint would like to start consigning animals later this year. He envisions an approximate $25 listing fee and hopes to include pictures of the animals as well. Please contact Clint, Cory, or a board member if you are interested in consigning an animal or if there are questions. Katie Agnew discussed some of the new World Dairy Expo rules and changes. All exhibitors should have received information in the mail regarding new RFID tags that will be required for all animals. Exhibitors are encouraged to visit the WDE website before heading to Madison this year. Brian Pederson gave the financial re-
port. He noted that: • The AMSS will be changing its billing system from Peachtree to QuickBooks • The AMSS will begin charging interest at a rate of 1.5% per month on all accounts over 60 days • Any request for work to be performed by the AMSS will not be processed unless payment is received with the work • An up-to-date asset list is being created. The AMSS needs to be more informed about what we own • Investment income was up in 2012 due to improved rates No questions were raised regarding the financial statements. A motion was made and seconded to accept the financial report. Motion carried. Sally Burd gave the report from the Presidents and Secretaries meeting. The nomination from the Presidents and Secretaries meeting of Mike Bodey was called. A motion to cast a unanimous ballot was made and seconded. Motion passed. Mike Bodey was welcomed to the board. The fourth position available was that of Clint Cribbet who was no longer eligible for re-election. The nomination from the Presidents and Secretaries meeting of Ellie Fleming was called. Mike Halpin, from Illinois, was nominated from the floor. A motion to cease nominations was made, seconded, and passed. Both Ellie and Mike addressed the group. Thereafter, Mike Halpin was welcomed to the board. The fifth position available was that of Steve Marak who was eligible for re-election. A motion to cast a unanimous ballot was made and seconded. American Milking Shorthorn Society Gold Star Dam Award This award has been created to recognize outstanding maternal contributions to the breed. Individual cow performance is currently monitored and recognized in multiple ways (classification, Hardy Cow awards, etc‌). Outstanding bulls are recognized through proofs and awards as well. State fairs and summer picnics were announced. Elise Krause was announced as the summer intern in the Beloit office. She is to begin her internship following the convention and will work through August. All past presidents were asked to stand and be recognized. All past queens were asked to stand and be recognized. Maureen Phelon welcomed the group to Westfield, Massachusetts in 2014. The convention is scheduled for June 26-28. A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. 2013 National Sale Report
here were 4 cows, 11 bred heifers and 12 open heifers represented in the 2013 edition of the American Milking Shorthorn National Sale. It ended with a successful overall average of $1,973 on the 27 live lots. The 23 embryos averaged $342. Gary Estes did his usual outstanding job calling the sale while David Kendall shared his knowledge reading pedigrees. Richard Lattire, Dakota Arthur and Jackie Huddleston worked the ring. Donnette Fisher, Kylie Daniels and Katie Agnew did an outstanding job clerking the sale. Topping the sale was the consignment of Halpin Farms of Cullom, IL. Sired by Kuszmar Alfairs Othello and a three-time All-American nominee, Halpins Elouise ‘E90’ sold dry and due in July to Kuszmar Mudslinger. Elouise’s style and elegance caught the eyes of many throughout the week! John & Marjorie Kuszlyk of Batavia, NY cast the final bid on Elouise for $4,200. The top selling heifer was a fancy fall calf consigned by Hard Core & Hillpoint partners and struck off for $3,400. HC-HP Royal Mocha is sired by Ecuafarm Kaiser Royalty and out of a ‘V86’ Rebel daughter of Viking-Valley Star Megg ‘4E94’. John & Marjorie Kuszlyk added another outstanding member of this tremendous cow family

Arthur Simpson Memorial Top Milk Award recipient. Crawley’s Valley View Farm of Gravette, AR added this young cow to their herd. Topping the embryo consignments at
$450 per embryo, was the consignment of GMC Farm. Sired by Innisfail Red Robin, the five embryos were out of Clayside Dairybell Oth Desiree ‘E92’. Desiree is no stranger to the tanbark trail and the next dam is the famous Clayside KR Dairybell 2A01 ‘E91’. These embryos headed back east with Katie Albaugh of Walkersville, MD. High sellers in the semen sale were Innisfail MD Sampson 3310 at $26 and B-D-F Diamond Sparkler selling for $22.50.

It is due time we showcase those efforts and I am thrilled to be part of the process of carrying out this project. The Milking Shorthorn breed is becoming more-and-more recognized by new breeders, so the Office and the Board is working on a new and reviving marketing approach to grow and advance the breed. A slogan and logo contest has been organized to get the help of our breeders to come up with the best way to promote our breed. See details in this Journal about the contest on page 13. You could win a $50 gift card if your idea is chosen. The new On-Farm Photo Challenge is being launched this Summer. The details and entry form are included in this Journal. This will be an excellent opportunity for breeders to showcase their cattle and
breeding program without the expense of attending a show. It also offers different categories including full herdbook, genetic expansion and dual purpose so all segments of our breed are recognized. Follow the contest on our Facebook page and vote for your favorites. Another new and exciting recognition program is the Gold Star Dam award. This award will be a permanent recognition on an animal’s pedigree and will recognize the maternal impacts a cow has on the breed. See details for entering your cows in this Journal. We will also be working on publishing a Bull Book this summer that will include information on Milking Shorthorn bulls with semen available. This will be a handy tool for breeders filled with useful information and will be convenient having everything in one place. If you have a bull to include, please contact the office ASAP. It is said that change brings progress. If that is true, the AMSS is shooting forward and I am proud to be part of this change. As always, our primary goal is to Improve, Promote and Expand the Red, White and Roan – and all of the change happening is definitely progress towards growing our breed and maintaining a competitive edge in the marketplace. ~Cory

American Milking Shorthorn Society On Farm Milking Shorthorn Photo Contest This contest has been created to promote cows that do not get to the show ring and provide an easy way for breeders to show off their best animals. It will also allow for Dual Purpose and Non-Show Eligible animals to be recognized within the breed. The contest will begin as an online only contest with all entrants posted on the AMSS Facebook page. Class winners will also be recognized on the AMSS website.

Entries will be due each year at the end of June to provide a contest during the summer months when there is a lull in promotion of show cows (no National Shows or AA promotions). This will also allow for a reminder for entries to be turned in at the Annual Convention and hopefully build up excitement about the contest. Judges will be chosen from the Board of Directors for the initial contest and then

randomly from breeders not entered in the contest. Dairy breeders will judge Herdbook and Genetic Expansion classes and Dual Purpose breeders will judge the Dual Purpose entries. An online voting will then be opened to choose the People’s Favorite from among all the class winners (1 PF from each group). National Convention 2013 Highlights
he Kansas Milking Shorthorn Society put on an outstanding convention that brought Red, White and Roan enthusiasts from across the country together in the heartland of McPherson, KS. Despite bad weather threats throughout the week, the Kansas breeders ensured all attendees had a safe and enjoyable time at the 2013 National Milking Shorthorn Convention. The convention kicked off on Wednesday evening with a movie night! Convention goers of all ages enjoyed the free entertainment at McPherson’s Historical Opera House. Scott & Jane Cailteux also began their duties as hosts of the Hospitality Room. Thursday morning began with a tour to the Salt Mine Museum in Hutchinson, KS, where attendees travelled 650 feet underground into the salt mines. Everyone enjoyed their experiences learning about the salt mines and seeing the history archived in the safe, climate-controlled environment of the salt mines. Next on the schedule was a home-cooked lunch at The Carriage Crossing in the Amish Community. In the evening, breeders enjoyed a trip to Sasnak Farms where they had the chance to see a great group of Milking Shorthorns owned by the Thiessen Family. M-K Keil Cattle Co. also brought over some of their favorites to display to the group. The day finished off with an outstanding meal at the Church Hall in Inman, KS.
The next day began with the much anticipated awards program. The National Production and All-American Awards were distributed. SWAG Milking Shorthorn partners, Kylie Daniels & Emily Monnat, won the W. Arthur Simpson Memorial Award for the Top Milk Record with Green Acres Titan Mascara ‘E90’. Dallas Butts won the W. Arthur Simpson Memorial Award for the Top Fat Record with a cow that needs no introduction Othello Rubys Jewel 3E93. The Top DHIR for production was won by Keil Cattle Co. of Russell, Kansas. The winners of Groups for the Maurice Meyer Award were: Group 1 – Hard Core Farms, Group 2 – Nathan & Jody Nus, and Group 3 – Echo Farm. The Willard E. Gerner Meritorious Brood Cow Award was won by Mapleton Valley Farms with Mapleton Vly MM Albany-P ‘V86’. The 2012 Cow of the Year Winner was Mapleton Vly Chance Francie ‘V86’. Sired by Bar-D Cindys Chance, Francie is also owned by Mapleton Valley Farms. For a complete list of awards check out the web page or contact the office. The awards breakfast was followed by the Presiden and Secretaries meeting and then the Annual Meeting. In the evening the annual Banquet was held. It was announced that Susan Lee will serve another year as AMSS Board President with Casey Weiss the Vice President. Others voted to the Executive Committee were Katie Agnew, Steve Marak and Brian Pederson.
In the junior awards portion, Liza Van der Laan was crowned the new Milking Shorthorn Queen and Roxann Achen won the Rachel Surridge Award. In the senior recognition Michael & Melissa Halpin were recognized as the Harry Clampitt Winner. The Citizen of the Year Award went to Shirley & Olin Wright. Beck Keil received the Dual Purpose Breeder of the Year Award. Finally, Clint Cribbet was recognized for his time serving on the Board of Directors. The Fun Auction ended the evening raising a total of $4,300 to support various AMSS groups and programs. Start making plans to attend next year’s convention – June 26-28, 2014 in Westfield, MA!

*NEW AT EXPO 2013 - RFID TAGS REQUIRED FOR CHECK -IN All animals entered at World Dairy Expo (The International) Show in October will required to have an RFID tag. Registration papers will be checked in as usual at Expo. No changes need to be made to the registration papers. The tag is specifically for use at check-in and does not tie to registration or production records. If you are registering a new born calf and would like to use the RFID tag as the registration number, this option does exist, simply make sure to enter the ENTIRE 840 number and select country code of USA 840. Only one button tag is needed to exhibit at Expo, but if the animal already has an RFID tag DO NOT cut out this tag. Prior to ordering tags, a Premise ID must be obtained from the state Department of Agriculture. These tags may be purchased on the Milking Shorthorn website at www.milkingshorthorn.com.

Alvin Dean Roy passed away April 3, 2013 at age 85. He was born March 24, 1928 at home on the Roy family farm west of Carlton, to Cullen Alfred Roy and Mary Rosetta (Hutchcroft) Roy. Al grew up on this Jersey dairy farm, and was one of the earliest members of the Homesteaders 4-H Club. He attended White Cloud School and Carlton Union High School as a member of the Class of 1946. He served two years in the US Army and was honorably discharged in March, 1955. Al married Carol Ann Rowland October 12, 1957. Al worked on farms and at farm-related jobs his entire life. Over the years, he worked for Compton and Rowell, Dr. John Manning, McMinnville Auction Yard, Rice Furniture, Moorman Mfg. Co. and Valley Feed & Supply, but his primary interest and occupation was always dairy farming. He operated a dairy west of Carlton before he and Carol moved to the dairy at Westerlook Farm in 1960. They purchased the Roy farm from his parents in 1966 and ran a small dairy there for more than 30 years. After "retiring," Al continued dairying but with fewer milk cows. He especially enjoyed his Milking Shorthorn cattle and was a regular exhibitor at fairs and shows for at least 20 years. His registered herd continues today after nearly 60 years. Al served as a

leader for the Homesteaders 4-H Club and was a member of several local agricultural groups and the state and national Milking Shorthorn organizations. He was also a member of American Legion Post 173 (Carlton). Al will be forever missed by Carol, his wife of 55 years; daughter and son-inlaw, Sue and Bob Baumgartner; daughter and son-in-law, Shari and Mark Sitton; and grandchildren Kraig, Mitch, and Nicole Sitton, and Will and Dan Baumgartner. He will be missed by nephew Steve Roy, Michelle and their sons Paxton and Tyler Roy, as well as the Roy cousins and many other family members, friends, and neighbors. Al was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Streeter. A service was held to honor him on April 19. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Yamhill Valley Heritage Center/Hutchcroft School in care of Macy and Son. George Michael "Mike" Kahoa passed away on April 17, 2013 at the age of 70 in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. He was born December 18, 1942 in Elk City, Oklahoma to Virgie Nina (Stevens) and William Conward "W.C." Kahoa. Mike grew up in the Sunny Point community and graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1960. He

received a Bachelor's degree in Poultry Science from Oklahoma State University. He then returned to the farm and raised turkeys commercially for several years. He also owned and operated a dairy, breeding, raising and showing registered "Oakridge Farm" Milking Shorthorn cattle. He was a pioneer in the Dual-Purpose registry in both American Milking Shorthorn Society and American Shorthorn Association. On July 15, 1978, he married Linda L. (Mills) Gragert, who had been Editor of the Milking Shorthorn Journal in Springfield, Missouri. They sold the dairy cattle in the early 80s and Mike then operated a beef Shorthorn herd (Kahoa Shorthorns). They hosted state livestock field days and club calf sales at their farm. Mike showed cattle in Oklahoma and throughout the United States, winning numerous championships at local, state(s) and national levels. He served on county, state and national cattle breeder boards including the Oklahoma Cattleman's Purebred Beef Council and the Roger Mills County Dairy Council, helping organize and hold county and state dairy shows, as well as the first Roger Mills County Bull Sale. Mike served on the Roger Mills County Fair Board that led in building the original county fair barn. He enjoyed being a ring man and sometimes an auctioneer
at the Roger Mills and Beckham Counties Spring Livestock Premium sales and other cattle sales. Mike and Linda received the American Shorthorn Association Builder of the Breed award in 1987. For several years, they managed Milking Shorthorn and beef Shorthorn auctions throughout the Midwest and South United States. Mike was a member of the original Board of Directors of the Sagebrush Workshop and Group Home in Sayre, Oklahoma. In 1984, Mike received an auctioneer diploma from the World Wide College of Auctioneering, Mason City, Iowa and Real Estate Broker License after attending classes at Sayre Junior College. He subsequently opened an auction firm, Kahoa Marketing & Auction, in Elk City, Oklahoma. He was also an Oklahoma Licensed Insurance and Trust agent. In the 90s, Mike became legally blind because of the ravages of diabetes and he opened and operated a flea market and auction until his health no longer allowed him to do so. Mike was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife and son, Erin Kyle Kahoa of Chicago, IL; stepson, Dennis Alan Gragert and wife Jennifer Vidis, of Chicago, IL and one daughter, Rebecca Susannie McKnight and husband, Mike of Powersite, MO; two sisters, Naomi Hagerman, Sweetwater, OK and Connie M. Jefcoat, Reydon; one brother, A.A. "Junior" Kahoa of Collinsville, OK; grand-
daughters, Crystal & Alicea Settlemoir, Lillian Gragert and Jessica McKnight and grandsons Sam Gragert, Brett, Brantley & Bren McKnight , and a host of other relatives and friends. Quinn, age 56 of Chadron, NE, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 25, 2013 at Divine Savior Hospital, Portage. He was born on September 3, 1956 to Kent and Dolores (Kasubaski) Quinn in Portage, WI. Don graduated from Black Hawk High School, South Wayne, WI in 1974. He has lived in the Chadron, NE area for the past 30 years and has worked as a heavy equipment operator. Don cherished his family and many friends across the United States and had a true love for the woods and nature. Survivors include his four children, Danny (Mary) Quinn and their children, Mikayla, Madison and Megan, all of Kansas City, KS, Ben (Rochelle) Quinn and their children, Ethan and Joshua all of Norwood, CO, Jennifer (Josiah) Smith and their daughter, Jaelyn, all of Douglas, WY and Jaime Quinn, Chadron, NE; parents, Kent and Dolores Quinn, Westfield, WI; four sisters, Rose Ann Quinn, Madison, WI, Kathy Quinn, Indianapolis, IN, Paula (Joe)
