The Executive Report

Hello Milking Shorthorn Breeders, It has been quite cold in my part of our great nation and as you know that is not fun on the farm. Frozen water pipes, frozen manure spreaders, frozen gutter cleaners and frozen farmers, do not make for fun days. But as you know, we get through it and always pray for warmer weather. We all do it because 1. We love Milking Shorthorns and we believe in them or 2. We are just crazy! Some days, I think we all wonder which one that is. A large part of my job is talking on the phone and over the past several weeks to start off any conversation it has been “How is the weather where you are?” It is funny that even non-farm folk ask that question first especially in the winter. The other part of that question is unique to me because many times, people think that I am in Beloit, Wisconsin, instead of Northwest Pennsylvania! That definitely takes the conversation in a different direction. Following up the weather, our conversation turns to “How does that work with you being in Pennsylvania and our registrations go to Wisconsin?” or “Is there still an office in Wisconsin?” or “Where do I mail things then?” To answer some of those questions. I think it has been working quite well me working in Pennsylvaia and having an office in Wisconsin. I do work from home and I have done that with past employers and for me if it is a good fit. I have been heading to Wisconsin about once every two or so months – although with this weather it is a longer stretch. When I travel out to Wisconsin, I spend about a week or so working in that office. Only registrations, transfers and payment for that work should be sent to the Beloit, Wisconsin office. If you are being billed for any work done, that payment should be sent to the Union City, Pennsylvania office along with all other mail. In addition, Allicia who has been doing our registrations at the Brown Swiss office in Beloit just had a baby and is on maternity leave. Kathi at Brown Swiss is handling Allicia’s work, however it may take a few extra days for phone calls to be returned or paperwork to come back. Please be patient during this time, as Allicia recovers and enjoys her new baby girl. She will be back working with us in a few weeks. If you need to talk to someone immediately, please call me at 608-365-3332 Ext. 102 and I will try to help you. I have spent most of January sending out membership packets. There was a small error in the mailing of the membership packets, when the labels were printed, the associate memCont. on pg. 32

President's Corner Hello Milking Shorthorn enthusiasts! 2014 was a good year for Milking Shorthorns. Last year we registered 2,795 animals which is an increase of 232 registrations over the previous year. This is an 8% increase in registrations from 2013 to 2014. At first glance, one would assume this increase is because of the six-month registration moratorium we offered from January to June, but when you dig deeper, animal sales and transfers were at a five-year high. In 2014, we transferred 938 animals, which was an increase of 231 over 2013. This is an astounding 25% increase in animals transferred in a single calendar year! The demand for quality Milking Shorthorns is very strong and this demand is creating additional registrations for the breed. The Cortland plan was developed by the AMSS leadership at the 2001 New York Convention and it serves as a blueprint for the long-term success and growth of the breed. The cornerstone of this Cortland plan is reaching and maintaining 5,000 registrations per year. At our winter Board of Directors meeting, I asked the directors if they believed the 5,000 registrations was still an achievable goal and they unanimously agreed that it was. So, how do we get there? My answer is to sell more good cattle. We have to get good Milking Shorthorns into new herds and let them produce and reproduce. A bad cow that is culled in her first lactation has less than a 50% chance of producing a daughter to replace herself whereas a good cow who lasts six lactations can replace herself with multiple daughters and can more easily establish a cow family and a new Milking Shorthorn breeder for generations to come. Since the demand for our cattle is so strong, I don't think we currently have enough cattle offered for public sale to fill this demand. I think it should be our goal to have a Milking Shorthorn sale at every national show every year. When we have a sale at the World Dairy Expo they are very well received, the sale average is high and most of the animals go into herds that are new to Milking Shorthorns. This past year's sale sold six lots for an average of $4,567. Hosting a sale at a multi-breed show is a great opportunity to reach new buyers who currently have other breeds and are Milking Shorthorn curious. In years previous, the Kansas Milking Shorthorn Society held an annual Dual Purpose

Milking Shorthorn show and sale. When this event was discontinued it left a void that is currently unfilled. I would love for a state or regional Milking Shorthorn group to restart a dual-purpose, cow-calf, and native show and sale. I think it could be very successful with the current demand and price of beef. Maybe this is an AMSS responsibility and opportunity? Food for thought... We are having our 2nd Annual Online National Sale this year March 11-14. We think this is a great opportunity for breeders to market their animals, embryos, and semen with a minimal amount of work and a very low commission rate. All Milking Shorthorn registered animals are eligible for this sale including bulls and Genetic Expansion

animals that might not otherwise be eligible at other sales. How do you move a mountain? One rock at a time. And it is not a mountain, it is a small hill and we have a great product which is easy to sell. We can get there and we will get there. For the love of the Red, White and Roan, ~ Casey

The Kuszlyk Cattle Co. ads in the last issue incorrectly listed Poppy as the Intermediate Champion at the International Show. She was the Res. Int. Champion and HM Res. Grand. Also, North Stars Mega Peanut-EXP-ET did not list Cory Salzl as owner on the Megadeth ad. Purebred Publishing apologzies for any inconvenience these errors created.

bers were mistakenly left off the list. That error has been corrected and their packets have also been mailed. By now, everyone should have received their renewal packet. If you have not received a packet, please contact me. When you looked at your packet, you should have noticed that there were new forms and updated forms in the packet. For the updated forms, especially the registration applications, you can continue to use the old form if you already have them. If you are making copies of the form to fill out, please use the new form. There was also a form to be listed in AMSS’s special directories, please consider having your farm listed in this, there is no cost and it helps being able to know who to call on if I need information or where to send people looking for Milking Shorthorns. If you have any questions regarding any of the paperwork, please call me. I have been working for all of you for eight months and I have learned a lot (and I have a lot more to learn) and I have tried to get things organized and getting work done on a timely basis. I am still working through

32

various items, but I do feel that I am making headway. Unfortunately it all takes time and there never seems to be enough time in the days. In the coming months, I hope to be able to attend some of the state and regional meetings to meet more of you the breeders. If there are any groups that would like me to attend your meeting, please let me know when it is and if my schedule allows, I would love to attend. I do have some visions that I would love to see happen in the future. I would like to see more commercial herds owning and registering Milking Shorthorns. I would like to be more involved with the Native, Calf/Cow and Grazing segment of our breed. Finally, I would like the United States Milking Shorthorns to become more active in exporting to other countries through live animals, semen and/or embryos. I know that I won’t see that all happen in one year, but it is a future that I think as a breed we can strive for. These goals are ones that move our breed forward on all fronts. I have been asked by many breeders

Milking Shorthorn Journal Winter 2015

about my background and will I be around awhile. So I want to end my column this issue with my thoughts on that question. I hope to be with the American Milking Shorthorn Society for the long haul. This is not just a job to me. I believe in the Milking Shorthorn breed – I have since my Dad gave me that wrong-age all-white calf. I believe that the Milking Shorthorn cow is the most beautiful cow and I shed tears when a Milking Shorthorn leaves our farm. I remember doing a 4-H demonstration on the Milking Shorthorn breed when the slogan was “The breed that fills every need” and to be honest we may not use that slogan but today that slogan still applies. Milking Shorthorns are for the commercial dairyman, showman, cow/calf operations, grazers and Native herds. Folks, we have it all – we just have to convince others what our breed has to offer. To do that we have to BELIEVE that it is POSSIBLE. I believe we can grow our breed’s popularity, do you? Milking Shorthorns – Breeding for Tomorrow Junia Isiminger, Executive Secretary

Junior Spotlight by Nicholas Achen

Jaydyn Isiminger is the 15-year-old daughter of Junia and Michael Isiminger. She has one sister Jordanna who is 9 years old. Isiminger attends Union City High School in Pennsylvania near Erie, where she is a freshman. Jaydyn is active in her 4-H club, Junior Holstein club, school sports, and is the treasurer for her freshman class. The Isimingers own six out of seven dairy breeds. The only breed missing from the representation is Guernseys. The majority of them are Milking Shorthorn and Holsteins. On Jaydyn’s family farm, they milk about 25 cows, with an additional 35 heifers. As soon as calves are born they put them in a calf hutch for a few months, and then they move them into the heifer pasture after weaning. Jaydyn’s responsibilities on the farm are milking when needed and calf chores like watering, feeding, bedding and feeding hay. As soon as newborns are born, Jaydyn is the person who starts right away and takes care of them. Jaydyn is involved in a lot of stuff. She states, “honestly sometimes too much.” Jaydyn is the president of her 4-H club, Townville Champs 4-H dairy club. This year will be her eighth year. She has been the vice-president for her Junior Holstein club and this year is the secretary. At school, Jaydyn plays on the junior varsity and varsity basketball teams. She is also a peer educator and has been on the Student Council. To top that all off this year she is the treasurer for her freshman class. Isiminger’s mother is the one who introduced her to the Milking Shorthorn breed. Her very first cow was traced to her best and favorite cow in the barn right now, Wind Swept MorningAfter Mickey who was nominated All-American Spring Calf in 2010 and Reserve All-American Junior Three-Year-Old two years ago. Jaydyn’s mother, Junia, is the current executive secretary for Milking Shorthorn, giving Jaydyn many opportunities to go outside Pennsylvania and meet other kids and see other breeds across the United States. Jaydyn’s experience with the Milking Shorthorn breed has been the real thing. She has more experiences with the shorthorns than any other breeds. She has won many firsts, champions, grand champions and best bred and owned awards. Isiminger has owned Milking Shorthorns her whole life and has been everywhere with them from county fairs, the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Winter National in Louisville, Kentucky, and

the big World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. She has learned a lot from the smallest populated breed. Isiminger states, “I learned to work hard because sometimes when you don’t expect it you may win supreme over every other breed.” The Milking Shorthorn breed is so special to Jaydyn because of one animal that started it all, Wind Swept Picasso Sara who died in 2012 after calving. She was a big old red cow that Jaydyn would hang on and hug every day. She gave her three beautiful red heifers, Minnie, Mickey and Mulan. But the one that is Isiminger’s favorite is Wind Swept MorningAfter Mickey. She was born in March of 2010 and she has meant the world to her. “Mickey has been to 22 shows with plenty more to come,” Isiminger stated. Every day after school you will find Jaydyn out walking Mickey. So now Mickey is an ideal showmanship animal since she was dragged around so much. Because of that one cow family, the Milking Shorthorn breed just became so special to her. Isiminger’s future plans with the breed are bigger than ever. She plans on continuing to show them still. But Jaydyn’s future plans honestly don’t have anything to do with cows. When she was younger, she always wanted to be a vet but now in high school she realizes her plans may have changed. She has been accepted in the Stem Academy where she takes more advanced classes which she thinks will help her make up her mind about the job she wants to do. Jaydyn wants to do something that is business related or in the medical field. She is leaning towards being a Radiologist or an Athletic Trainer. This Pennsylvania resident's most memorable time with her Milking Shorthorns was at the World Dairy Expo and AllAmerican Dairy Shows. She has won classes that have been close and has won Best Bred and Owned ribbons which she thinks is the best award to win. She has made very good friends and one in particular is the Rhoades family in Ohio. They have helped each other out and even rescued them when needed, and that’s a story she must tell: "It was the National Milking Shorthorn Convention last year in Massachusetts. I was riding home with the Rhoades; Doug, Hannah, Sam, Sarah and me. We weren’t even on the road for five minutes and the truck breaks down. But let me also mention the truck had a flat tire on the way there and then stopped working about 5 minutes before we arrived at the fairgrounds. John Anderson had to come save us because we

had a load of cattle on the back of the truck. Anyway, back to coming home, my mom was driving in front of us and Leslie, Carrie and their grandma were riding behind us. My mom called a tow truck to tow the Ford to a dealership to fix it because we needed to get home. Ridas came to get the trailer and took the cattle back to the fairgrounds until we figured something out. My mom called my dad and he brought our mighty Dodge to the rescue all the way from Pennsylvania. Then Hannah, Leslie and Doug stayed behind with the truck to get it fixed and the rest of us went on with the cows. We made it back to our place without any more truck problems. It’s been months and the Rhoades and us still joke around about it to this very day. But from these good times we are all close to each other and they are like just another mom, dad, sisters and brother to me. We all comfort each other and that’s what the Milking Shorthorn is about."

Native 'Heritage' Shorthorns By Robin Alden

Dotting the clover-filled pastures near Dallas, Oregon, you’ll find a rare gem: a small, yet impressive herd of “Native Shorthorns.” These roan beauties of Whispering Hills Farm are unique in several ways—the most important being their 100% pure origins. “The pedigree of the Native Shorthorn is pure in the sense that you can trace them back to the original Coates herdbook,” said Dr. Joseph Shallberger, who owns the herd with his wife, Dr. Susan Schallberger. Although the couple raises conventional Shorthorns for beef, they are passionate about their small herd of purebred cattle. To be designated a “Native Shorthorn” by the AMSS, an animal must have no outside breeding from the herdbook. Cattle can be certified either by having purebred parents, or through a pedigree check at the cost of the owner. Why breed Native Shorthorns? Native Shorthorns are most notable for their traditional dual-purpose utility. In the past 60 years, Shorthorn breeders have split in two—those who raise for the meat industry, and those who focus on dairying. In modern society, where one-cow farms are a thing of the past, breeding dual-purpose animals may seem pointless. However, Dr.

40

Schallberger knows there is a market—and he only sees it growing. Because his herd is fed entirely on grass and hay, he is able to sell to the ever-expanding “grass-fed” niche market. But it’s not just consumers who are interested in the Native Shorthorns—it’s breeders, too. While some breeders are looking to re-introduce the purebred genetics, others are looking for an animal that will perform well on grass. And there are still plenty of farmers out there who are interested in dual-purpose cattle. The Schallbergers aren’t just breeding purebred Shorthorns for the market, though. They are very passionate about preserving the bloodlines of the Native breed. “From a marketing standpoint, we can sell more effectively because of the rarity of the product…but we also wanted to preserve and improve the genetic base,” said Dr. Schallberger. He is disinterested in modern crossbreeding, which he fears will create a “cookie-cutter cow” that is suited to productivity, but loses all the unique aspects of the original breed. The herd is now totally closed, with only the help of semen from eight or nine bulls collected around 50 years ago, selected specially to improve their cattle while still preserving their Native status.

Milking Shorthorn Journal Winter 2015

Benefits for Milking Shorthorn Breeders Although going back to the dual-purpose nature of Native Shorthorns may seem like a step backwards to some Milking Shorthorn breeders, there are several things to be gained by re-introducing the original genetics to their herds. As both Drs. Schallberger are veterinarians, good health is of essence to their herd, and Dr. J. Schallberger believes that his Native genetics could bring back a sturdier, longer-living cow. As he sees dairy cattle evolve from those he grew up with on his family dairy, Dr. Schallberger is disheartened by the trend towards frailty in modern cattle—frailty that does not exist in the Native Shorthorn. As an added bonus, Native Shorthorns have the potential to increase components. “Many Shorthorns used to have higher components than Guernseys and Jerseys, even,” he stated. Although they have just begun plans to record their own cattle’s milk production, Dr. Schallberger has records on the dams of the AI bulls he is using, and he claims most have fat records pushing 5.5%. If Milking Shorthorn breeders are also interested in raising steers, there are even more benefits to the Native breed. “Native Shorthorns are far superior to any other breed on being able to marble up on a grass finish,” says Dr. Schallberger. He attributes

this to their breeding, as Native Shorthorns were developed for a total grass diet. At 18 months, his steers regularly finish at 12001300 pounds. Because of their grass diet, the Schallbergers are able to sell their steers at a premium price to niche buyers without having to shell out the extra cash on grain. It is no wonder they are so passionate about grass feeding! Worth the Search With only around 500 registered Native Shorthorns in the United States, breeders may believe it nearly impossible to break into this world. “There is diversity [in genetics], but you have to search for it,” said Dr. Schallberger. He himself had to do an extensive search for cattle to introduce to

his herd. However, there are Native Shorthorn breeders around the country, whose genetics are very unique to each herd. Some herds focus on beef, others dairy, and some enjoy the dual-purpose potential. While there may not be an abundance of genetics out there, breeders such as the Schallbergers ensure that Native Shorthorns will be preserved, improved upon, and hopefully multiplied. “I still feel there is a market out there for [dual purpose] cattle,” said Dr. Schallberger. “It’s not a big market, but it’s growing.” Certainly, with the increasing market potential and the added health benefits, Native Shorthorns are worth a second look.

Pictured is Millie and her calf, Snow White. She is due to have a bull calf April 14 sired by Meadowbrook Chieftan the 9th. Meadowbrook Chieftain the 9th is a Native 'Heritage' Shorthorn bull that is famous for siring tremendous females in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Upper photo is a group of the Schallbergers' herd.

Milking Shorthorn Journal Winter 2015

Jensen Joins Purebred Team Purebred Publishing is pleased to introduce their newest team member, Jade Jensen. As the sales executive, Jade’s responsibilities will include selling advertising space in the Milking Shorthorn Journal and other Purebred Publishing publications. She takes over for Lindsey Rucks, who has returned to work with her family on their dairy farm. Jade brings a strong background in dairy and great work ethic to the team. Jade is the 22-year-old daughter of Jeff and Mary Jensen of Four J’s Farm, Conway, Missouri. What began as a traditional 4-H project with a few calves eventually evolved into a 60-cow dairy over a span of a decade. They herd currently consists of about 50% Guernseys, 25% Ayrshires, and the other 25% are crossbreds. Until recently, Jade was very involved with the home farm helping on the weekends milking and with the essential jobs such as vaccinating and herd checks along with her sister, Jarica, when they were home from college. Jade’s responsibilities were to take care of the classification preparation clipping udders and making sure paper work was in order. She was also responsible to get any show prospects ready for shows and care for them at the shows. The Jensens are an intensive grazing herd who try to utilize

their grounds to get the most efficiency out of their cows. Jade also individually mates cows to bulls that possess the traits they are focused on and they also seek out a herd bull with a deep pedigree for production components, longevity, and type that can be used for a clean-up bull. Jade is a recent graduate of Missouri Southern States University with a BSBA in accounting and a degree in management. She currently lives in New Richmond, Wisconsin, where she is involved with Crisdhome Farms. Jade attributes much of her success and accomplishments to the number of well-known breeders and herds she has worked with over the past several years. She has worked on many show strings as well as on sale crews around the country. Her accomplishments are many, most recently named the Merle Howard Award winner at the 2014 World Dairy Expo and the Outstanding Youth at the American Guernsey Association National Convention in 2014. She has also won fitting and showing awards at both the All-American Dairy Show and World Dairy Expo in recent years. “I cannot wait to get started serving you all and having a good time while do-

ing it,” said Jade. “My passion and heart is in this and I look forward to helping your marketing programs succeed!” Contact Jade Jensen at purebred.sales@gmail.com or 614.339.5394. The Spring Journal deadline is March 6 The issue will feature the All-American winners & Spring Sales
