from the publisher & editor

n our Anniversary issue we look back over the past year and ahead to plans for our future. In 2006 we continued to expand our offerings and to respond to our readership, advertisers, and the market. Most prominent was our launching of the digital “e” version of Antiques & Fine Art (available on our website, www.antiquesandfineart.com), breaking ground as the first to accomplish this within the field of art and antiques publishing. Now readers can access our magazine online and flip through page-by-page just as if they had the issue in their hands; by virtue of the internet, readers can click on dealers’ advertisements and link to their inventory for further exploration.

SPECIALISTS IN ANTIQUE ARMS ARMOUR AND RELATED OBJECTS

We have big plans for 2007. Among them is the expansion and redevelopment of our website. We have just brought Erik Brockett on board to head up this division and manage this new department. We are very excited about further harnessing this potential and providing information unique to our site. We also plan to publish our first hard-bound coffeetable book. This volume will feature beautiful color images of collectors’ homes, showcasing collections that range from period furnishings and interiors to eclectic environments blending antiques with modern objects — the thrust of so many newer collections. Of course, we continue to focus on our print magazine. We have increased the amount of our editorial content while expanding the overall size of the publication. We continue to add editorial components for general readers while staying true to offering informative, scholarly articles for serious collectors. Our audience is responding with resounding enthusiasm, evidenced by positive feedback and the tremendous increase in our subscriptions. All of us at Antiques & Fine Art thank you for your support, interest, and engagement. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing many of you throughout the coming year and beyond.

Richard Clague (Southern, 1821–1872) St. Tammany Parish Landscape Oil on canvas, 18 x 22 inches Courtesy of Meyer Fine Art Text by Roulhac Toledano, author of Richard Clague (1974) Referred to as the “the father of southern landscape painting,” Richard Clague brought the academic traditions of Geneva and Paris to Louisiana. Trained abroad, his debt was to Theodore Rousseau and the Barbizon school. In 1862 he opened a studio in New Orleans and influenced young artists such as William Aiken Walker, Charles Giroux, and Joseph Meeker. Clague’s paintings capture the essence of the humid southern landscape, with its waterways and hanging vines. St. Tammany’s Parish is just such a scene. It was likely painted shortly after his arrival but — based on the tignon worn by the women as prescribed by Louisiana’s sumptuary laws — before the Civil War. In 1974 the New Orleans Museum of Art mounted a retrospective of Clague’s works. It was discovered that his cousin August de Brueys Hughes, had inherited the contents of Clague’s studio and, in 1873, had transported it to New York. St. Tammany is one of the works that was in Clague’s studio and is the first of those paintings to come to light in over 130 years.

MME Fine Art, LLC Sold to a private collector Summer Day, Portland Harbor Alfred Thompson Bircher (1837–1908) Oil on canvas 18⅛ x 39⅛ inches Signed lower left: A.T. Bricher Courtesy MME Fine Art, LLC, New York Bricher was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and spent his early career in New England. Although largely self-taught, he painted with the artistic luminaries of his time. When working in the White Mountains he was alongside Benjamin Champney and Alfred Bierstadt, among others; and while in his studio in Boston, with artists such as Fitz Henry Lane and Martin Johnson Heade. Bricher is perhaps best known for his paintings of the New England coast, where with ability equal to these artists, he recorded the crashing of waves or quiet inlet scenes such as those of Summer Day. This image is a quintessential example of one of Bricher’s favorite subjects, the coast of Maine. The painting is in pristine condition and the frame is of the period.

Modernism in American Silver 20th-Century Design The Wolfsonian, 1001 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, FL Through March 25, 2007 For more information call 305.531.1001 or visit www.wolfsonian.org During the nineteenth century, the American silverware industry became the largest in the world. By the 1930s, however, less expensive alternatives such as chromium-plated metal and aluminum had become increasingly popular. Faced with a shrinking market, silver manufacturers attracted progressive customers by introducing innovative designs reflecting contemporary fashion, art and architecture, and new technologies. This showcase of American silver between 1925 and 2000 reflects how designers have adapted designs to suit changing social, economic, and cultural currents in this period. Recognized designers such as Michael Graves, Elsa Peretti, and Richard Meier are represented, as well as a host of individuals whose names are less wellknown by the general public.

Cedar Swamps, Cape May County, New Jersey, Oil on canvas, 31 1/4 × 46 1/4 inches

In the 1850s, the swampy area around Dennisville in Cape May County, New Jersey was noted for an unusual industry called cedar mining. Huge cedar trees that were felled by age or storms sank deep into the peat and were found buried at various depths. The submerged logs—some estimated to be over a thousand years old—were quite sound and well preserved. Shingles made from these logs were in high demand among builders in South Jersey and Philadelphia, where the roof of Independence Hall was re-shingled with cedar mined from Cape May County.
