lassic design is timeless. Take, for instance, Biedermeier furniture. Considered to be at its peak between 1815 and 1825, objects in this style exude a graceful, geometric line of design—as contemporary today as nearly two hundred years ago. In her article Biedermeier: The Invention of Simplicity, Laurie Winters brings together varying viewpoints to present a clear definition of the period, illustrating the cultural influences that shaped this “cult of simplicity” (pages 140–146). The emphasis on purity of form and utility put forth with the Biedermeier style was heralded later in the century during the Arts and Crafts movement. Author and dealer John Levitties discusses how these principles are among those that are nowhere more fully realized than in the craft workshops of the Cotswold School in England (pages 188–191).
C
SPECIALISTS IN ANTIQUE ARMS ARMOUR AND RELATED OBJECTS
The expression of oneself through objects—whether simple or elaborate, successful or otherwise—is perhaps most evident and personally revealing in folk art; the art of the people. In Expressions of Innocence and Eloquence (pages 192–198), author Ruth Wolfe illustrates a sampling of works from the Katcher collection of Americana, which will be forthcoming in a book of the same name. Among the selections, chosen from over 200 works, many previously unpublished, are idiosyncratic sculptures, weathervanes, quilts, furniture, and paintings that, even though diverse in subject and materials, share a classic timelessness. The paintings of the Hudson River School artists of the mid-nineteenth century present perhaps the most recognizable visual imagery of our country’s landscape. These classic scenes, with their dramatic, often idealized vistas, reflect a purity of the natural world, sometimes encroached by man, yet always portraying the captivating beauty of the countryside. In her article on Jasper Francis Cropsey (pages 148–149), author Lisa Bush Hankin discusses the work of one of the most sought after artists of this school. One of Cropsey’s autumnal scenes, for which he is largely known, is a new addition to the collectors featured in Gladys Montgomery’s Lifestyle article A Houseful of Friends (page 152–165). The couple, who live along the Hudson, have devoted a large part of their collection to paintings that capture the timeless beauty of the region. Enjoy,
