hen I worked for Wayne Pratt Antiques years ago, people would sometimes ask me why they should consult with antiques dealers when considering or making a purchase. My response was to provide a personal analogy: When I buy stocks, I confer with a specialist. The same should be true for someone buying art or antiques. Dealers are experienced in evaluating antiques and art, their historical context, and market trends. It behooves them to have a thorough knowledge of their material because they are putting their money down each time they make a purchase and cannot afford to make mistakes. Why not take advantage of this experience? Visit galleries and shops, attend art and antiques shows, preview auctions, talk with the experts. It may be intimidating at first, but you are doing just what they have done—making a purchase—so they understand your perspective. As natural educators, they want to share their passion with you, will encourage you to learn, and will guide you in how to look at an object or work of art. You may be surprised at the world that unfolds before you—all because you asked. In this issue, investment advisor Irvin Schorsch brings into focus the potential rewards of acquiring the best of the best in whatever category you pursue (pages 205–209). As a collector, Schorsch also shares his views on the joys of collecting: from the friendships formed and experiences shared to the thrill of the hunt and pleasures of owning a piece of history. It is the opportunity to form bonds and enrich one’s life that makes collecting such a rewarding experience. A lovely individual, known and respected for her expertise was the late Elinor Gordon, who passed away this summer at the age of ninetyone. The doyenne of Chinese export porcelain, after fifty years in business she was still helping clients build collections, exhibiting at antiques shows, and supporting the trade. Her grace, elegance, and sincerity were complemented by her natural ability to establish and grow friendships with fellow dealers and clients. Thank you, Elinor, for leading the charge for so many years.
With appreciation,
Johanna McBrien Johanna@antiquesandfineart.com
