Exceptionally Handsome Fine-Quality Full-Length Suit of Parade Armour, 19th Century Hand-hammered etched steel, H. 6 ft. 2 in., W. 31 in.

The entire armour is beautifully etched and decorated with the coat of arms of Elector Joachim II of Germany, full-length figures, birds, portrait heads, angels, vines, and foliage. The armour was possibly made for a wealthy patron or a museum as a copy of the original suit made for the Elector Joachim II of Germany, ca. 1560. Both suits of armour have a long, historically interesting provenance. This particular armour represents a mystery considering it is signed three times, PVS, 1560, by a yet-identified maker.

he arts are vital to our culture—in providing visual stimulation; promoting discussion and curiosity; instilling a sense of history and of place; building social bonds; and to our overall psychological well-being.

Museums are the backbone of the arts community in their education and advocacy of the treasures they hold and display. As with all other sectors of the economy, the current climate has affected these non-profit institutions, many quite significantly, and it is important that we all continue to support the arts in its many branches.* In response, museums are being creative and thinking outside the box, which presents opportunities such as joining forces through partnerships. There are also bright spots with new expansion projects, examples of which include the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida, and the St. Louis Art Museum in Missouri.

In speaking to the spirit of innovation we are very pleased to devote a portion of this issue to the reopening of the Charles Engelhard Court and suite of period rooms at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City (pages 133–145). American Wing Chairman Morrison H. Heckscher and curatorial colleagues Amelia Peck, Peter M. Kenny, Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, Beth Wees, and Thayer Tolles present articles about the rooms and the decorative and fine art on view, now interpreted and presented for the audience of today and into the future, with cutting edge displays and computerized access to information. In a separate article (pages 146–150), Ms. Frelinghuysen and Adrienne Spinozzi showcase the Robert A. Ellison Jr. Collection of American ceramics. This promised gift has been recently incorporated into the newly renovated courtyard.

The reopening of the American Wing’s Engelhard Court and room settings coincides with the 100th anniversary of New York State’s Hudson-Fulton Celebration. Initiated in 1909, this year many city-wide events are marking what are the dual 400th anniversaries of Henry Hudson’s voyage up the Hudson River and Samuel de Champlain’s discovery of the lake that also bears his name, as well as the 200th anniversary of Robert Fulton’s steamboat trip up the Hudson. Among the other institutions taking part in the festivities are Cedar Grove, the home of Thomas Cole (1801–1848), and Olana State Historic Site, home of Frederic Church (1826–1900). The two have joined together in coordinated exhibitions to celebrate Cole and Church and the Hudson River School of painting. In his essay in this issue (pages 124–129), John K. Howat discusses a number of the celebrated works on view into October of this year.

Many more articles are presented in the following pages, including an “Edgy” Lifestyle of dealer Frank Maresca’s Manhattan loft (pages 88–99). The creative combination of art with functional objects is brilliantly displayed, both for effect and enjoyment. As Maresca says in the article, “Art’s all about having a strong reaction…because that’s the beginning of the discussion.” May we all continue to enjoy, support, and discuss art!
