e often hear about or know individuals who truly make a difference, whether within a small community or on the international stage. Such can be said of Ralph Carpenter (see Tribute, page 209). During his lifetime, he was an ardent collector, author, and enthusiast of history. His efforts within the community of Newport, Rhode Island, resulted in the preservation of some of its most important architectural and historic landmarks. His groundbreaking publication on the colonial furniture and craftsmen of Newport in the 1950s, The Arts and Crafts of Newport, Rhode Island, 1640–1820, paved the way for future scholars. Among his most recent projects, at the age of ninety-seven, was the publication of the tome Newport: A Lively Experiment, 1639–1969 (2007), for which he was the catalyst. Though he is no longer with us, we need to continue to carry the torch that he and others have kept burning so brightly. Though a cliché, without our past we have no future. In talking with collectors over the years, I have continually heard them refer to themselves as stewards of the material within their homes. They enjoy and take care of the objects they have acquired with the awareness that future generations will continue to live with the material they now possess, just as those of the past have done. This point was recently made in talking with one of the owners of the collection featured in the Lifestyle “Eagles & Tulips, Snakes & Weathervanes, a Pennsylvania Folk Art Collection,” on pages 126–139. In his enthusiasm for a Lancaster County dower chest, circa 1770–1790, which he and his wife purchased after we photographed the collection, he had the following to say: “So rarely does someone find an object that meets the impossible criteria of being over two hundred years old, having never been seen, and in absolutely untouched condition.” While in their collection, the chest and all of the other material will continue to be cared for and appreciated, not only by the current owners, but also by museum audiences who benefit from the loan of their objects. It is vital that we continue to explore and learn from the past as well, uncovering new information that leads either to different interpretations or supports existing thought. Our Spring issue has numerous “Discoveries from the Field,” in which the contributors share their enlightening findings (O’Brien, pages 180–183; Cooper, pages 184–185; Culp, pages 194–196). One author, Sumpter Priddy (pages 159–165), combines his background in architecture with his knowledge of furniture to explore the iconography on a Virginia desk. It is also exciting when a museum makes discoveries, as has occurred recently at Drayton Hall (pages 192–193). So let us continue to be shepherds of our cultural, decorative, and architectural history and continue to keep it relevant and fresh into the future. With appreciation,
