e are hearing more and more about the importance of being environmentally conscious, both on a global and personal scale. Our publisher, John Smiroldo, and I recently attended an antiques industry meeting where Marilyn Gould, show promoter and director of the Wilton Historical Society, suggested that people start thinking of antiques as being “green.” She had a valid point. After all, they fit the criteria of the slogan “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” Throughout their existence, antiques are passed from one owner to the next and from generation to generation; and think of all the natural resources that would be spared if more people were purchasing antiques rather than buying new furniture, much of which contributes to the harvesting and depletion of our forests. There is certainly a plethora of available antiques at all price levels for furnishing one’s home, and the range of styles is tremendous.

SPECIALISTS IN ANTIQUE ARMS ARMOUR AND RELATED OBJECTS
John and I decided to run with the idea of antiques being green. We enlisted the services of David Ruggiero, a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accredited professional specializing in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and green building design. The result: Green Your Home with Antiques, a new series (see pages 100–101) in which we will, as David says in the first installment, “provide clear information on green issues as they relate to antiques and the environment in which you place them.” The first topic he explores is the health benefits of living with all-natural antique rugs rather than the synthetic floor coverings so widely used by many of today’s home owners. We hope you will join us as we embark on our new campaign. Go Green — Buy Antiques!
