T
here are many influences in our lives that shape who we become; perhaps one of the first is where we spent our childhood. Artist Will Barnet (b. 1911) grew up on the North Shore of Massachusetts, where history abounds. In My Father’s House (pages 164–171), art historian Martica Sawin focuses on Barnet’s most personal paintings: a series of nine images that delve into the mind of his late, older sister Eva. Set in the house where Barnet grew up and where Eva lived her entire life, he has related her solitary and vulnerable figure to local literary and historic individuals, “creating a contemporary mythology of New England.” Sometimes later in life we discover a location that affects us profoundly. Such was the case for Swedish artist Sven Birger Sandzén (1871–1954), who was captivated by the American West when he immigrated to America in his twenties. As his daughter Margaret would later write, “His work retained a somewhat Scandinavian look about it, but Sweden could never have furnished him with the kind of subject matter he found exciting…the romance of the West.” Sandzén’s distinctive, assured brush strokes and intense, pure colors project the potency he saw in the terrain he painted for forty years (pages 159–163). The ocean is another subject that holds great emotive powers and is frequently rendered by artists. While many have painted the seas and their coastlines, a distinguished cadre depicted the vessels that pierce their waters. In Art of the America’s Cup (pages 128–139), Alan Granby and Lauren P. Della Monica present the work of artists who have captured the likenesses of some of the winning boats in the most famous yachting race in the world. In addition to presenting works by James Buttersworth (1817–1894) and Antonio Jacobsen (1850–1921), two of the most esteemed and prominent American marine artists, scenes by lesser known artists such as Joseph Otis Minott (d. 1909) and photographer James Burton, whose image relays the tension and intensity of a crucial moment in the 1903 race, are also included. Perhaps a surprise to many will be the 1899 watercolor scene by a young Edward Hopper (1882–1967). Coming full circle back to New England, a number of articles in this issue showcase the collections from this region. These include the Newport Historical Society (pages 180–185), The Nantucket Historical Society (pages 186–188), Plimouth Plantation (pages 192–193) and the Paul Revere House in Boston’s historic North End (pages 194–199). The latter, which celebrates its 100th anniversary as a museum, is one of the oldest historic house museums in the country and the only surviving seventeenth-century residence in the city.
