Meaning behind “Bruce”

The Traveling Bean

BRUCE (PLS 524)

PASSPORT (4921)

We have named PLS 524 after our beloved research farm dog, Bruce, who also preferred northern climates. Bruce was from the Northwoods of Wisconsin where he met his dad, our vegetable breeder Benjamin, in 2010. Bruce came to the research farm next year and spent the next decade there digging holes, chasing tractors, and eating peas. Bruce was a good old hound dog who loved to go hiking, sing the blues, and sway in the breeze. 2021 was Bruce’s last season on Earth. He will be dearly missed.

Just like a passport, this bean has a compact, small frame with a refined plant architecture that adapts to many locations, such as a container, small space gardening or an open field. This bean has fancy, 1-3 sieve dark beans that sit high up in the plant. Passport is resistant to BCMV, Curly Top, and Halo Top.
