pure Makeover featuring Salon W
A New Look for a New Year This month’s Pure Magazine makeover winner is Kari Bornhoft, who we took to Salon W on Western Ave for her new look. Kari works as a bartender at one of OKC's top restaurants, Deep Fork Grill, and knew she needed a more elegant, polished appearance to represent the establishment with more confidence. We took Kari over to see Jennifer Bass, who has 15 years experience doing hair and specializes in personalized color. The first stop was the dramatic coloring, which revved-up Kari’s Before dull mousey brown with a magnificent rich red — just in time for the Holiday parties. This was a marvelous complement to her deep-set eyes. Jennifer wanted to leave length and weight to her fine hair, at the same time create movement and volume. She created soft seamless layers that move and frame her face beautifully and accentuate her high cheekbones. After a quick blow-
out, Jennifer then applied Goldwell Double Boost at her roots to add volume and flexibility. Kari's final stop was to makeup artist Gwen Pettie for her makeup application. She used intense, romantic colors to complete her polished new look.
"Jenny gave me a dramatic new look that I never knew I could pull off!" To complete her new look we picked out a beautiful faux fur from Royce Clothing, just 3 doors down from Salon W. If you’re ready to go from plain-Jane to vivacious vamp like Kari, call Jennifer Bass at Salon W, 405.608.0692, 7304 N Western Ave. – G.B. Martin

Weight Loss With Dr Ozzie One of the biggest health concerns in America today is the obesity epidemic that is affecting young and old people alike. America is one of the unhealthiest nations in the world and obesi-ty has a direct and indirect connection to almost every known chronic disease we suffer today. Most women focus on dieting for weight loss. However, the constant
complaint about most diets is we lose the weight, but it comes back as soon as we stop dieting, and in many instances we gain more weight than what was lost. Now, there are surgical procedures for becoming thinner, which in some cases may be necessary and even life saving, but in the majority of cases surgeries set you up for other debilitating or life 28 pure
threatening disease process-es. By only concentrating on your weight and becoming skinnier, diets fail in the long run. The primary focus for weight loss is body composition. Body composition is the ratio of muscle, fat and water. It is impossible to sus-tain weight loss when we increase fat and decrease muscle and proper body water. This process happens with all diets on the market today and it is the reason diets fail. At the Functional Medicine &Wellness Center (FM&WC), we use modern diagnostic testing to make sure you are losing fat, not muscle and water. What does this mean to you? With more muscle mass your metabolism increases and constantly burns calories at a very high rate. With less muscle and water and increased fat your metabolism is much slower, burning calories at a slower rate. At the FM&WC, we use BIA testing that measures your body composition. Once this is calculated, Dr. Ozzie will provide a natural wellness program to help you lose weight. A major contributing factor to obesity is environmental toxicity. If you are toxic, your body will increase the fat to store the toxins causing you to gain more fat. Remember, more fat = slower metabolism. You may work out all the time and have a healthy diet but still can’t lose weight. Why? Because your body is toxic. If you are too toxic you canpure

not burn fat because the toxins will enter your blood stream and make you very sick. The body’s wisdom is to minimize its ability to burn fat preventing you from losing weight. How do you fix this issue? DETOX naturally at the FM&WC. Another reason for obesity is due to increased stress which raises your corti-sol levels which in turn slows down your fat burning potential. There could bea number of reasons why you may not be able to lose weight. At the FM&WC, we focus on the individual patient and determine what their issues are and fix them naturally, so that you can be happy with your natural self. 29

artist interview
Melissa Key We are very excited to have up and coming artist Melissa Key from Tulsa as our featured artist in our inaugural magazine! Melissa recently had an exhibition of her art at Deep Fork Grill and you can find photos of that event on page 35. We liked her art so much we have featured one of Melissa's pieces on the cover of this months issue of PURE! This is an excerpt from Melissa's interview with Lindley Welch: 32 pure
Pure: When did you discover your that you were an artist? Key: Since the first breath I took I have been an artist, its just the way God has made me. My whole life I have been creating in some way, shape or form. Pure: Over the years, how have you developed your creative talents? Key: I’ve studied visual art and photography at Southern Louisiana University, Louisiana State University, New Orleans Academy of Fine Art, Santa Fe photographic workshops and Maine Photographic & film school. I have been shooting photography professionally for 12 years all over the United States and in and around New Orleans, Louisiana area. Pure: Is that where you're from? Key: Yes, I’m from a small town on the North shore called Ponchatoula, LA. Yes it’s french and so am I. After hurricane Katrina I found myself more creative than ever, even though the times were hard and not so pretty I
seemed to find beauty in the colors that flowed across my canvas or photographs. People around me had lost everything, but I managed to keep my head high and my brush on the canvas. Two years after the storm I moved to Tulsa, OK where I found great inspiration and peace covering me. My days consist of God, Starbucks, children, my husband, designers, family, painting or shooting. Pure: So where do you get your inspiration? Key: I do love to travel, I find great joy and inspiration when I travel, I always come home with new ideas. Pure: Do you have special preference of media for your work? Key: I work in many mediums; oil, acrylics, pigments, acrylic ink, gold leaf, fiberglass, charcoals and many varnishes. I hope everyone enjoys my art and photography because a piece of me and my heart lies in every print and canvas.
You can see more of Melissa's art at her gallery at 14989 N Grant St, Tulsa and contact her at 918.943.6506

Band interview
Pure Magazine recently caught up with Dallas-based promising new act Ishi. We sat down with guitar/synthesizer player Brad Dale and newest member and female vocalist Taylor Rea before they went onstage to captivate the crowd with their uniquely infectious sounds. Be sure to check out their debut CD, Through the Trees, at www.myspace.com/ishiisound. Pure: How would you describe your music? BD: Electro-folk...or folk-tronic dance. Pure: Well, that’s almost like a whole new genre, isn’t it! Who are your influences? TR: Michael Jackson, Herbie Hancock, Gary Numan. BD: The classics, like Simon & Garfunkel, Kraftwerk and of course, Daft Punk. Pure: Why the name “Ishi”? BD: Well, it’s actually a Japanese name that shows up in many cultures. The word describes a perfect union between a man and a woman. Pure: Are you signed to a label? BD: We are indie... we already have digital distribution through all major outlets like iTunes, but no hard distribution just yet. Pure: What about touring? BD: We just returned from Oklahoma and Austin and we’ll be doing a West Coast tour this summer…and of course we’ll be opening the main stage for Edgefest this year Pure: Great! A lot of people are very excited about your live shows. What makes them so special?
BD: We really draw from the energy of the crowd to create positive universal forces. We’re very rawenergy driven…and we also create a lot with each other. We have a young demographic as far as our fans, but also a very broad appeal – from high school students to my mom! TR: It’s whatever brings people together. Pure: Your sound is very eclectic and fairly sophisticated; are you trained musicians? BD: Well, I was a jazz major at University of North Texas…but I’m also a composer and sound designer by day at Dallas Audio Post. TR: I’ve been singing all my life! Luckily, my mom really encouraged me and I’ve played violin, piano, flute and guitar. Pure: What’s in store for Ishi fans to look forward to in the future? BD: The doors are wide open for the future! We ended up with a holistic sound, so it’s going to be a natural progression – the only consistency is that it’s not consistent! TR: Our music makes you laugh, cry, dance! BD: Our debut CD, Through the Trees – the title is sort of a play on not being able to see the forest for the trees – is really about us breaking through the limitations of our minds and surroundings and breaking through with positivity.

Jazmo'z Bourbon Street Café “ Laissez Le Bon Temps Roullez !!!”
SoCo Hurricane
The size of Jazmo'z Bourbon Street Café is deceptive. Descend the stairs from the bustling street level of Bricktown to the canal level restaurant and bar below and you will think you have left Oklahoma City for New Orleans. We sat in the bar area which has 5 flat screen TV’s, each showing a different sporting event and a nice view over the canal. Ivan, the friendly (and award winning) bartender fixed us a SoCo Hurricane which would give Pat O’Brians signature drink a run for its money and a Green Gator (the perfect drink if you have a mouthful of sweet teeth). My favorite was the Cherry Tootise Roll – a drink creation that won Ivan the Absolut bartenders competition in June. Jazmo'z has a solid cocktail and martini list and beer lovers will appreciate the extensive offering of 30 plus beers, including three hard to find brews by Abita from Louisiana. The wine list, although not overly exciting, offers a variety of red and white wines over a broad price spectrum which will appeal to most tastes. 58 pure
The extensive (and I do mean extensive) new menu at Jazmo'z offers over 15 appetizers as well as soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees and desserts. We started with the Crab Cake with beurre blanc sauce and although tasty with good texture, its not the best I’ve had in town. The entrees that followed more than made up for this though. The Harmonian Trio of bacon wrapped shrimp, rock lobster tail and stuffed shrimp were all cooked perfectly and the side of dirty rice was a meal in itself and rivals that of Commanders Palace. The St Charles Grilled Chicken was a wonderful blend of textures and flavors highlighted by the Andouille sausage and coarsely grated parmesan cheese over a creole style cream sauce. Overall, we had an enjoyable experience. Its not easy to replicate true, “Nawlins style” fare or atmosphere – trust me, I know, having previously lived in Louisiana and still making my requisite annual trip to the Big Easy – but Jazmo'z does an admirable job for being so far from the coast.

Deep Fork Grill The Deep Fork Grill ranks quite easily as a favorite restaurant in OKC, and it's particularly well-suited for an evening out or a private reception. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable, with an almost rustic feel in areas built of wood and rock. Though certainly suggestive of a fine dining experience, there is also an upscale casualness. www.deepforkgrill.com

2011 Mercedes-Benz E Class Mercedes-Benz has always been at the forefront of automotive technological firsts since it debuted its first car in 1886. But the introduction of its new 2011 E Class cars raises the bar for all luxury car manufacturers to a totally new - and lofty - level. Mere pictures cannot do the allnew 2011 Mercedes-Benz E Class justice. From it's aggressively styled, Formula one inspired front end, through its sculpted side panels that make the car look like its in motion even when standing still, to its beautiful streamlined and curvaceous rear, the E Class commands your attention from the minute you lay eyes on it. Yes, the new E Class offers all of the convenience and safety items one has come to expect from
a luxury car manufacturer, like satellite navigation, a surround sound stereo system, a rear view camera, DVD screens in the headrests and a choice of beautiful materials with superb fit and finish, but it also has a host of safety features that set it apart from many other cars in this segment of the market. Yes, there are a choice of energy efficient gasoline and diesel V6 engines – and a monstrous 518 horsepower V8 that can go from 0 to 60 mph in jut 4.3 seconds! And yes, the E Class is now offered in 4 models – sedan, coupe, cabriolet and wagon – so there is an E Class to fit almost anyone’s needs.

But perhaps the most impressive feature of the E Class is tucked away under its sexy body — the optional, all new, ‘Pre-Safe’ system. Equipped with the ‘Pre-Safe’ system, the E-Class can stop itself to avoid a collision and will alert you should you wander from your lane. It can detect instability (sensing when a collision or rollover is imminent) and take steps to minimize or even avoid the impact! This is truly cutting edge technology and is one of the many reasons that Mercedes-Benz is once again at the forefront of innovation in the automobile industry. I drove the E350 version of this technological marvel and was impressed with its mid range torque and how quiet the car was. The infinitely adjustable (and very comfortable)
sport seats and the easy to use voice activated COMAND navigation / entertainment system made the driving experience a very pleasurable one indeed. The 3.5 litre V6 under the hood felt more like an 8 cylinder but was as fuel efficient as many 4 cylinder engines. The car garnered a lot of second looks around town - I was actually stopped twice by people who wanted to know what the car was! What would I change on this car? Very little actually, although I would advise Mercedes-Benz to fit the Pre-Safe system as standard equipment – that would TRULY relegate its rivals to a distant second place. Take note BMW & Lexus…. The New Mercedes E Class has arrived…. I suggest you visit Nick Williams or one of his very helpful and knowledgeable staff at Mercedes-Benz of Oklahoma City at 1225 North Broadway to set up a test drive to see for yourself. —Clarke Harris

Legal
Real Justice: Auto Insurance by Sarah Lee Gossett Parrish, Esq.
We hope it never happens to us, sometimes someone we know is involved in one, other times we hear vivid - and often sad - accounts of them. What are they? Car accidents. If you are involved in an accident, what do you do? First, let's look at a few things from the insurance and legal aspects. Oklahoma’s financial responsibility laws require minimum auto liability insurance limits. Oklahoma law also requires auto liability policies to provide uninsured motorist coverage (“UM coverage”). What is UM coverage? It is additional insurance that is tied to the insured person, as opposed to a particular auto, and it protects the insured from owners or drivers of uninsured autos and hit-and-run autos. Unless you decline UM coverage in writing, Oklahoma imposes minimum UM cov-
erage limits as a matter of law. Why is this important? Ask anyone rear-ended by an under-insured driver. Should the unthinkable happen, a catastrophic injury resulting from an auto accident, sufficient insurance is invaluable. What exactly is sufficient auto insurance? It includes automobile liability coverage, UM coverage and medical payments (“Med Pay”) coverage. What amounts of liability, UM, and Med Pay insurance constitute sufficient auto insurance coverage? This is a question only you can answer. Assess what you can, and cannot, afford to lose, should the unthinkable occur. What is the value of your auto? Do you have the gold standard in health insurance? What is your income, and how much per day would you lose, if injuries in an auto accident rendered you inca-
76 pure
pacitated for a day, a week, a month? Do you own several autos, and, if so, do your policies allow “stacking” of UM coverage? Finally, do you know what to do if you or someone you care about is involved in an auto accident? Whether you are the cause or the victim of an accident, there are certain considerations to keep in mind. Obviously, you never leave the scene of the accident. Call 911. Call someone you trust, and tell them where you are and what happened. If you have a cell phone with a camera on it, take some photos of the vehicles involved in the accident, including yours. If not, write down the license plate number, make, model, and color of the other auto(s) involved and your best description of the damage to the cars and to any injured people. Identify witnesses and ask for names and contact information. Obtain the name, contact information, driver’s license number, and automobile insurance information of the other driver(s). Wait for the police so that an officer can generate a record of the accident, issue any citation deemed appropriate, and verify the accuracy of any information exchanged between the drivers. If liability is later contested, the officer’s accident report may become a valuable piece of evidence. After the police release you from the accident scene, even if you do not believe you are injured, consider
checking in with your family physician or visiting a medical clinic. Sometimes injuries do not manifest until hours later, and early detection and treatment will save you time, money and, most importantly, unnecessary pain. Be sure to alert your own automobile insurer of the accident, and it never hurts to consult an attorney for legal advice, whether you are the cause or the victim of the accident. Stay safe and remember to secure sufficient automobile insurance coverage. Should the unthinkable occur, you will be thankful you did.
