pure Makeover featuring Darrin Davis

Exceptional Extensions Pure’s Summer makeover candidate, Stephanie Tubbs, was looking to add length and fullness to her fine, shoulderlength dark hair. She wanted more than just the extra length most extensions provide, so Dallas-based hair-extension “guru” Darrin Davis transformed her tresses into a sexy and soft sweep with his signature extension technique. Developed exclusively after years of training under the masters in Hollywood, New York and his native Salt Lake City, the affable stylist experimented until he created a proprietary installation method that doesn’t damage a person’s natural hair, because it attaches the extension so that it "rests" on top of the natural hair instead of weaving, braiding, gluing or bonding – all of which can damage hair. His unique approach to Stephanie’s lengthy locks (a full 22”!) is further enhanced by using the finest quality human hair available (luxurious, soft hair with a natural cuticle and wave from Russia or Italy), and with Darrin’s deft installation, her new hair will last up to a year, with maintenance appointments to tighten the extensions approximately every 3 months. Extension hair comes in as many textures and colors as there are individuals,

so the right selection can seem daunting. Not so with Darrin; his expertise at choosing the best texture and shade to match each clients' mane leaves nothing to chance. An admitted perfectionist, Darrin’s used to hearing the words, “You would have never known! It looks like it’s your real hair!”, when people see the results. “Exactly.” Darrin smiles, “That’s the whole point." He adds, "I love to make people feel good about themselves. It’s crazy how adding length or thickness can transform a woman’s self esteem. People can now flip the hair they never had before!” Just don’t flip out at the cost, however…a new mane can set you back anywhere from $800-$3500, depending on the hair used, and takes about 4-5 hours to install. Stephanie‘s makeup was done by Ashley Salazar, using a bright palette of pop color to add a little glam and a whole lot of sophistication to Stephanie’s formerly bare face. Ready to go long and lush with a look like Stephanie’s? Call Darrin Davis Productions at the Neinast Salon, 214-850-8578 for an appointment. Located at 3622 Fairmount St. – Andrea Reich 20 pure

Style

Dallas Style with Darrin Davis Darrin Davis is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to artistic expression. You may have seen him in Willie Nelson’s historic “Cowboys” video that he directed, choreographed and was danced lead in. The video premiered on the Logo network in New York City and was named one of the top 20 country videos of 2006. Darrin also choreographed and performed for the local dance music radio station KDL, dancing with Deborah Cox, Rockell and the infamous Kristine W. In addition, he is also a NYC recording artist, and his song “Release” has been played in clubs across the USA, Paris and Japan. Here in Texas, Darrin holds the titles of Co-founder and Vice President of the AetheriA Foundation, which raises scholarship money for upcoming artists in the DFW area. Their latest gala garnered appearances by celebrities Jessica Simpson, Johnny Knoxville and Morgan Fairchild, just to name a few. Most recently, Darrin has made a name in Dallas as the "hair extension guru." (See the Makeover article on pg. 20) for the last two years, he has worked with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and has been on stage at all the major national hair shows including his own show. This Summer Darrin will be the featured "image guy" on a new reality series on A&E, where he'll be working with pure

young talented musicians as they enter into a music career. Rockstar maker? Exactly! The series will showcase his many talents, including makeup, photography, choreography, style, performance and image branding. Darrin Davis: I'm an “Image Control Freak” and I love to have as much influence over image as possible. Doing hair, makeup, wardrobe styling and photography is like playing in my playground. I love to bring out the inner diva and feel it's part of my calling to bring out the best in people. To do all of that and then capture it in a photo gets me all excited. I love sexy, hot confidence and I LOVE to bring that out in people. I’m thrilled to be on the Pure fashion team! In the coming months I’ll be giving fashion tips, creating style spotlights, doing makeovers and photoshoots. (See the fashion spread pgs 12-17) Style is very individual and variety is key to avoid stale fashion culture. So feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if you feel there is something fashionforward in Dallas worth highlighting in future issues. So enjoy some Darrin in Dallas– whether you enjoy fab image, killer photos, fun music and art or reality television. I can be reached by email at Darrin@PureMagDallas.com or give me a call at 214.850.8578. 25

Weight Loss With Dr Ozzie One of the biggest health concerns in America today is the obesity epidemic that is affecting young and old people alike. America is one of the unhealthiest nations in the world and obesi-ty has a direct and indirect connection to almost every known chronic disease we suffer today. Most women focus on dieting for weight loss. However, the constant com-

plaint about most diets is we lose the weight, but it comes back as soon as we stop dieting, and in many instances we gain more weight than what was lost. Now, there are surgical procedures for becoming thinner, which in some cases may be necessary and even life saving, but in the majority of cases surgeries set you up for other debilitating or life threatening disease process-es. By 28 pure

only concentrating on your weight and becoming skinnier, diets fail in the long run. The primary focus for weight loss is body composition. Body composition is the ratio of muscle, fat and water. It is impossible to sus-tain weight loss when we increase fat and decrease muscle and proper body water. This process happens with all diets on the market today and it is the reason diets fail. At the Functional Medicine &Wellness Center (FM&WC), we use modern diagnostic testing to make sure you are losing fat, not muscle and water. What does this mean to you? With more muscle mass your metabolism increases and constantly burns calories at a very high rate. With less muscle and water and increased fat your metabolism is much slower, burning calories at a slower rate. At the FM&WC, we use BIA testing that measures your body composition. Once this is calculated, Dr. Ozzie will provide a natural wellness program to help you lose weight. A major contributing factor to obesity is environmental toxicity. If you are toxic, your body will increase the fat to store the toxins causing you to gain more fat. Remember, more fat = slower metabolism. You may work out all the time and have a healthy diet but still can’t lose weight. Why? Because your body is toxic. If you are too toxic you cannot burn fat because the toxins will enter your blood stream and make you very sick. The body’s wisdom is to minimize pure

its ability to burn fat preventing you from losing weight. How do you fix this issue? DETOX naturally at the FM&WC. Another reason for obesity is due to increased stress which raises your cortisol levels which in turn slows down your fat burning potential. There could bea number of reasons why you may not be able to lose weight. At the FM&WC, we focus on the individual patient and determine what their issues are and fix them naturally, so that you can be happy with your natural self. Dr. Ozzie will have a special section that features the latest health topics and a Q & A section to address all your health concerns. Send your questions to DrOzzie@PureMagDallas.com and look for your answers in the next issue! 29

Band interview

Pure Magazine recently caught up with Dallas-based promising new act Ishi. We sat down with guitar/synthesizer player Brad Dale and newest member and female vocalist Taylor Rea before they went onstage to captivate the crowd with their uniquely infectious sounds. Be sure to check out their debut CD, Through the Trees, at www.myspace.com/ishiisound. Pure: How would you describe your music? BD: Electro-folk...or folk-tronic dance. Pure: Well, that’s almost like a whole new genre, isn’t it! Who are your influences? TR: Michael Jackson, Herbie Hancock, Gary Numan. BD: The classics, like Simon & Garfunkel, Kraftwerk and of course, Daft Punk. Pure: Why the name “Ishi”? BD: Well, it’s actually a Japanese name that shows up in many cultures. The word describes a perfect union between a man and a woman. Pure: Are you signed to a label? BD: We are indie... we already have digital distribution through all major outlets like iTunes, but no hard distribution just yet. Pure: What about touring? BD: We just returned from Oklahoma and Austin and we’ll be doing a West Coast tour this summer…and of course we’ll be opening the main stage for Edgefest this year Pure: Great! A lot of people are very excited about your live shows. What makes them so special? pure

BD: We really draw from the energy of the crowd to create positive universal forces. We’re very rawenergy driven…and we also create a lot with each other. We have a young demographic as far as our fans, but also a very broad appeal – from high school students to my mom! TR: It’s whatever brings people together. Pure: Your sound is very eclectic and fairly sophisticated; are you trained musicians? BD: Well, I was a jazz major at University of North Texas…but I’m also a composer and sound designer by day at Dallas Audio Post. TR: I’ve been singing all my life! Luckily, my mom really encouraged me and I’ve played violin, piano, flute and guitar. Pure: What’s in store for Ishi fans to look forward to in the future? BD: The doors are wide open for the future! We ended up with a holistic sound, so it’s going to be a natural progression – the only consistency is that it’s not consistent! TR: Our music makes you laugh, cry, dance! BD: Our debut CD, Through the Trees – the title is sort of a play on not being able to see the forest for the trees – is really about us breaking through the limitations of our minds and surroundings and breaking through with positivity. —interviewed by Andrea Reich 47

Splitsville Luxury Lanes A New Spin On Bowling

Bowling is being reinvented with the grand opening of Florida based Splitsville Luxury Lanes and Dinner Lounge in the Arlington Highlands development on March 5, 2009. Featuring a contemporary design, a full-scale restaurant and bar, and the world’s only permanent outdoor bowling lane and fire pits for colder weather, Splitsville caters to everything from children’s birthday parties to high-end corporate, sporting, and celebrity events.

Introducing America’s Original Bowling Parlor, where stale nachos, tacky carpeting and retro shoes are a thing of the past. Splitsville Luxury Lanes & Dinner Lounge is a lot different than the bowling alley you remember. We’ve polished up the entire gaming experience with a contemporary design and a full-scale restaurant & bar. We’re talking fresh rolled sushi, champagne and dancing the night away.

60 pure

The first thing you’ll notice when you walk into Splitsville is the innovative design. The 13 lanes are built in clusters throughout the space, which allows you to view bowling from varying angles and perspectives, as well as, creating cozy nooks that are perfect for an intimate dinner setting. The décor combines hip and retro elements resulting in a playful yet sophisticated environment. Between their four chic bars, plasma TVs and gourmet menu, at Splitsville, you can have a blast with or without picking up a bowling ball. “Splitsville gives people permission to have fun, with or without picking up a ball,” said Guy Revelle, co-founder of Splitsville,“ and the Arlington Highlands seemed the perfect fit for this innovative concept.” Featuring a gourmet menu created by Tim Cushman, one of Food & Wine magazine’s 2008 “Best New Chefs,” and pure 61

Entertainment/Lounge review a sushi and champagne bar inspired by Kamehachi, a third generation sushi house from Chicago. Splitsville has assembled a team that is reinventing late night social gathering. “People love to bowl, but many don’t enjoy a ‘traditional’ bowling alley or its offerings beyond the lanes,” said Mark Gibson, co-founder of Splitsville. “We believed that a concept centered on bowling but with a greatly improved atmosphere, and upscale food, beverages, and service, would result in a surprising destination for people to meet and have a good time together.” To learn more about Splitsville Luxury Lanes & Dinner Lounge, visit www.Splitsvillelanes.com. —G.B. Sushi Axiom

Sushi Axiom is located on the ever growing and ever popular Henderson stretch. This Dallas location is Sushi Axiom’s it’s second location in the DFW metroplex in the new Shops on Henderson and has a rather inviting covered patio with a relaxing waterfall. Once you enter it is like you’ve entered a new ultra hip dimension of Japanese Fusion. The décor combines a variety of textures masterfully using light and dark wood, red leather and dark tiling to create a sophisticated and trendy atmosphere. There are little decorating touches all over the restaurant that can be appreciated from the unique blowfish hanging in between the glass of the private dining room to the ultra Zen bathrooms. Boasting the only flowing Kirin beer tap in Texas, plus 17 specialty martinis like their signature the Martini Axiom, a sweet mix of pomegranate vodka and liqueur, Cointreau, pineapple juice and Champagne---it would make sense their bar area would be so large it clearly knows how to draw a crowd. They also offer a sake sampler boasting an impressive selection of hot and cold sakes, including the ginjo and junmai. Size does matter at this trendy Japanese Fusion spot which would explain the

size of their sushi bar. Sushi Axiom has quickly made a name for itself by offering fantastic sushi. Sushi Axiom’s extensive menu of award winning sushi and sashimi is all skillfully crafted with the freshest ingredients and offers some of the more rare species like the Japanese red snapper or Aji, a salt-licked Japanese horse mackerel, is served whole and deep-fried. The signature Axiom roll is a beautiful rainbow of color made with fresh salmon, crab and avocado surrounded by soy wrap and topped with tuna wasabi cream. Edamame is a predictable starter, but their delicious, thinly sliced pieces of fried fish called flounder chips or their sweet and salty axiom wings better illustrate the restaurant's fusion bent. Their kitchen

menu continues down the fusion road offering a twist on many Japanese and other Asian favorites. Sushi Axiom takes traditional fried rice up a notch with their Hawaiian fried rice, made with pineapple and seafood and served in a hallowed out pineapple. The dancing rib eye is a delightful dish made with juicy cuts of beef tossed in a blend of Asian spices served with rice and vegetables. Not forgetting about dessert Sushi Axiom offers a variety of unique gelato’s they have created just for them. A popular combination is the wasabi and raspberry a delightful blend of sweet and a small touch of heat that surprisingly creates a refreshing and delightful taste. —G.B. South-of-the-border conviviality and the light-hearted laughter of lovers and friends fill the large, warm-hued dining rooms, VIP area and bright, glass enclosed patio at Trece, but this is not your average Mexican restaurant. Instead you’ll find yourself perusing a menu of over 100 tequilas and global Mexican cuisine choices while a steady stream of Dallas’ chicest and cutest strut by. 74 pure

The Mexicana, an 8-oz. cube tenderloin was deliciously prepared – seared on the grill, then roasted to medium-rare with Serrano peppers, red and yellow peppers, onions, roasted chilis, tomatoes, tomatillos, poblanos and queso fresco and served with rice. The meat was tender and juicy with excellent flavor, and the other ingredients lent the dish a robust taste not unlike a Mexican paella. the Mercantile Place A Dallas Icon is Reborn 88 pure

Mercantile Place on Main is more than a place to live. It's a place where history and the future converge to create a new landmark for Downtown Dallas. The Merc, a 31-story luxury residential tower, was formerly the renowned Mercantile National Bank Building, while its smaller sister The Element is a brand-new 15-story mid-century modern-styled residential tower that was inspired by renowned modernist architect Joseph Eichler. Mercantile Place on Main is redefining modern upscale residential living in the Downtown Dallas district. The Merc Completed in 1942, The Merc was Dallas' only major skyscraper constructed during World War II - the tallest building in the US west of the Mississippi. To this day, The Merc's clock and spire are treasured icons in the Dallas skyline. The construction of the Mercantile Tower created a monumental landmark to Dallas with an enduring legacy. Completed in 1942, the 523-foot Mercantile Tower was the home of Mercantile National Bank, founded and owned by Dallas powerhouse banker and civic leader, Robert L. Thornton. At the time of construction, the wooden Art Deco murals decorating the lobby were the largest in the world. In 1958, a new tower was erected and still remains crowned by an ornamental four-sided clock tower and decorative weather spire that told the time and current weather conditions. pure 89

Renewed, remixed and reborn into upscale rental residences in the heart of the Main Street District, this landmark building will now take its place of honor amidst the Dallas vibrant skyline. The Element The Element reflects the principles of Joseph Eichler's architecture and design. The 15-story mid-rise tower reflects highend sophistication with its "V" shaped profile in the Dallas skyline reminiscent of mid-century modern optimism. The design aesthetic of The Element is a reinterpretation of the principles of mid-century modern design. The Element expresses a forward-thinking Eichlerstyle architectural statement, similar in spirit to post-war modernism of the 1950's and 1960's. The Eichler homes featured open floor plans, clerestory windows, floor-to-ceiling glass, atria, angular roofs, integration of inside and outside features and a simple elemental treatment of architectural design. The updated sleek modern design of The Element also features glass walls and open floor plans with bold geometric lines. Eichler's signature sloping roof and glass windows - integrating outdoor and indoor spaces - come together in this extraordinary mid-century modern masterpiece. The Element offers 156 inspired one and two-bedroom apartments with penthouse suites available. Located at 1800 Main St in downtown Dallas. Please go to www.mercdallas.com for more details. —G.B. Lisa Linehan's "Project Husband" Lisa Linehan is a 35-year old Dallasbased singer/songwriter, vocal coach and marketing consultant. She graduated from the University of Virginia and worked in finance before pursuing a music career. She also graduated from UCLA with a Master's Degree in Social Work. Performance highlights include singing The National Anthem for the L.A. Dodgers, Lakers, Clippers and Galaxy, as well as for the Texas Rangers and FC Dallas. Lisa is the Director of Chick Singer Night, producing showcases at the House of Blues. Her music can be heard at www.lisalinehan.com and on iTunes. Lisa Linehan has everything she needs for her fabulous wedding next February – except the groom. Inspired by her participation in the wedding party of a good friend last year, Lisa decided she wouldn’t count on the proverbial catching of the bouquet to be next in line. Thus, Project Husband was born. She joined dating sites www. sugardaddie.com, www.millionairematch. com and www.match.com, and began her search for the perfect husband. Vivacious and warm, with sparkling amber eyes, Lisa is also ever-practical. “Life is short,” she proclaims, as she describes her endeavor, “If I plan this wedding, it will happen! My friend found a great guy — that gives me

hope that I will too!” Not even a truckload of protests from her traditionally-minded Greek mother could deter her. With the help of a videographer friend who taped her every date, she soon caught the attention of the local CW33 News. Now every Thursday at 9pm you can watch her segment “Project Husband” and track her progress as she dates eligible bachelors from all walks of life, ranging in age from 26 to 50 years old. The CW33 is also a partner with Bridal Shows, Inc. and is helping to organize the many sponsors lining up to underwrite her wedding. Lisa has already reserved her venue – the Piazza in the Village in Colleyville - for February 15, 2011, incidentally also her grandparent’s wedding anniversary. What does she look for in a potential husband? “A soul-mate. Age, race, it really doesn’t matter… I listen to my heart,” she states. “I’ve had 30 dates in the last 3 months! And I’ve met a few people I really like, so it’s good to compare and contrast…it makes me appreciate a strong connection.” Interested in a date with Lisa? Read more at www.projecthusband.com; or email her at projecthusband@gmail.com. We here at Pure are looking forward to the wedding, Lisa! —interviewed by Andrea Reich

Living Your True Life With Ashley Berges

You Are What You Eat— You Are What You See & Hear Our senses are bombarded daily with information from many media sources. We can’t always choose what we are exposed to, but most of the time we can. What you allow yourself to view, read, and listen to are very important choices, which, should be chosen wisely. We sometimes give little thought to the music we listen to and the television programs and films we watch. Our minds are very absorbent and tend to cling to things that we see and hear. Even if you aren’t paying attention to something on the television or the

radio, your subconscious mind always is. Our brains never stop working; they pick up everything and keep it in our subconscious. Scientists have learned that our subconscious stores everything we come into contact with; it controls much of what we do and how we feel and act, and it contains the knowledge and thoughts that drive us to do what we do and feel how we feel. That’s why, in our spare time, what we allow ourselves to view, read, and listen to are very important selections and should be chosen wisely. 100 pure

When you listen to the radio, your brain is picking up on all the lyrics of the songs, so if the songs you are listening to are violent and negative in nature, your thoughts will be as well. If you are watching violent television programs and films, these violent thoughts will seep into your mind and contaminate your thoughts and feelings. These negative and violent images DO NOT help us grow in a positive way. Negative images and thoughts can reside inside the subconscious mind and in order to remove them we must fill the mind with the positive instead of the negative. Lets think of the mind as a glass of water, this glass of water may have some clean drinkable water inside of it but some of it might be murky and discolored. With a glass of water, it’s easy enough to empty the glass in the sink, wash it really well, and refill it with clean water. Our subconscious minds are a bit more challenging to “clean.” Think of the subconscious minds as the glass of water, but this glass is affixed to the table, and because you can’t move it to empty the murky water, you must bombard the glass with clean water so that the murky water flows out and the glass now contains good healthy water. Ways to cleanse our subconscious mind. 1. Don’t leave the television or radio on when going to sleep. The problem pure

with leaving one of these devices on is that eventually you do fall asleep and anything can be invading the mind. It’s like having no guard at the castle. 2. Pay close attention to your heart rate and breathing. Sometimes the best notification for what we need to be watching or listening to comes to us in the form of what our bodies are doing while exposed to these stimuli. When you are paying attention to your heart rate and breathing, you are also paying attention to yourself and not giving all of your attention and energy to an outside stimuli, thereby monitoring your intake of said stimuli. 3. Music is a powerful stimulus. Music has the ability to lift us up or put us down. There are neural correlations to the oftenpowerful emotional responses to music. We all realize that when we listen to music, even if we aren’t trying to, we can quickly pick up on the lyrics and possibly begin singing along. Whether we are watching television, reading a book, or listening to music, we need to select our viewing and listening choices wisely so we create and live that true life we want and need.
