THE PERFECT DEVICE Manufacturers continue to warily feel out which device size is perfect for the travelling business consumer, straddling the gap between large smartphones and small tablets, regular laptops and tablets with keyboards. A tablet or smartphone needs to be large enough to properly see projects or presentations and work on them while you’re on that high-speed train heading to your meeting. Yet it also needs to be small enough to conveniently slip into your bag. Many are favouring the convenience of 10, 11 or 12-inch hybrid devices to fit both needs, such as the Microsoft Surface or the HP Envy, but the jury is still out.

BLACKBERRY Q10
SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 Apple has always been good at generating hype, but the flurry of activity over the release of the S4 may have just been enough to shake the mighty manufacturer. While it’s not earth-shatteringly different than the S3, the S4 is a beautiful phone. The white version has a fine diamond pattern beneath its gloss surface. It’s a definite improvement on the S3, with more screen space, a sturdier USB port and a responsive home button. Despite its immense 4.99” display, the S4 is light and thin; however the rounded edges somehow make it look a bit awkward. With the power underneath, its bright, glossy screen and impressive photographic abilities, there is no doubt this is one of the best phones on the market.

While the Z10 threw BlackBerry into the running for the all-touchscreen super smartphone market, it left some loyalists feeling alienated. Enter the BlackBerry Q10, with half of the phone dominated by keyboard. It runs the Z10’s BlackBerry 10.1, whose usability depends on if you’re willing to dive deep into the Q10’s layers of functionality. Even though it doesn’t have a giant display, the BlackBerry Q10’s selling point is its unique place as a top market smartphone with a good keyboard. For people who prioritise messaging above everything else, including good apps, the Q10 is a good buy. The swipe-driven OS provides plenty of new, exciting ways of interacting with the device, while keyboard shortcuts and Instant Actions add extra speed and flexibility. Considering the Q10 is a phone for loyal BlackBerry users, old habits will have to be broken.

HUAWEI ASCEND P6
Nokia’s flagship phone, the Lumia 920, married striking looks to a quality screen and great camera. However, there was still some room for improvement.
While it might not attract attention like the Samsungs and Apples of the world, the Chinese manufacturer has gone and outdone them at their own game with the Ascend P6.
The Nokia Lumia 925 is the answer to this. It’s a great looking phone; it’s slimmer and lighter than the Nokia Lumia 920, and the metal band running around the edge does wonders for it. The camera is superb too, not only in terms of its raw performance, but also in the sheer number of options, modes and effects. Nokia’s HERE Maps and HERE Drive navigation apps are brilliant additions. Like all Windows Phone 8 handsets, the Nokia Lumia 925 also does a great job of contacts, messaging and social network integration. While it may not reinvent the wheel, it’s a formidable addition to the top of the line smartphone world.

The phone’s razor-slim body makes it one of the thinnest smartphones on the market. Sure, there has been word of even thinner phones, but these were the kind of gadgets to give small-time Chinese makers their 15 minutes of fame rather than make a big splash globally. Huawei’s vision, on the other hand, goes well beyond the home market. What makes the Ascend so impressive is its powerful credentials. With a quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A9 processor, a 16-core GPU and 2 GB of RAM, the Ascend really offers a lot for a reasonable price.

HUAWEI MEDIAPAD 10 LINK Promising download speeds of up to 150 Mbps on 4 G networks, the MediaPad has plenty of potential. Some of its different features include a lack of physical buttons, and the fact the front-facing camera is located on top of the tablet when held in landscape mode rather than portrait. The Huawei MediaPad 10 Link is quick and responsive, with a Jelly Bean processor. Huawei has preloaded the tablet with a few of its own apps. There’s still 12.83 GB out of 16 GB available out of the box, which should be plenty for most people to get started with before needing to upgrade. It’s a decent offering for those looking for a simple tablet. SPECIFICATIONS OS Android OS Processor Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A9 Memory/Storage microSD [up to 32 GB]; 8/16/32 GB internal, 1 GB RAM Screen 1280 x 800 pixels, IPS LCD, capacitive touchscreen, 16M colours Data Speed HSDPA, 42 Mbps; HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps; LTE, Cat4, 50 Mbps UL, 150 Mbps DL

HUAWEI ASCEND MATE Huawei started out on the phone and tablet market quietly, going through a stage of copying and innovation before turning more ambitious and creating more unique models. The Ascend Mate is one of these copy-style tablets. The Mate is the Chinese take on the Samsung Galaxy Notes - low-cost but quite up to date in terms of equipment, for a midrange phablet. However, the Huawei’s customisation of the Android interface does slow it down a little. It’s aimed at those who don’t want to buy both a phone and a tablet, at 6.1 inches it does the job fairly well.

APPLE’S NEW NEXT GEN MAC PRO
#2
After seven years, Apple finally decided to spruce things up. Launching later this year is the new cylindrical style New Mac Pro. The most impressive feature is that it’s expected to measure in at only 1/8th of the current Mac Pro’s size. New architecture and design are responsible for optimising the hardware’s performance, both inside and out. The distinctly different shape comes compliments of a new thermal core; an air duct running through the centre of the hardware itself, along with a fan situated at the top. A beautiful addition to any office.
