on the go The portable office used to be the stuff of science fiction, but today’s mobilityaddicted world means that anything you need is available wherever you need it, whenever you need it. WORDS JESSICA GLIDDON
Modern life is all about portability. A rummage through the average person’s bag can elicit more computing power than the Apollo 11 Lunar Module had and this just in our phones. Wherever we are, we expect to have everything in our lives available with a tap or a click. Nowadays, managing your home life can be as complex as having an office job. Whether you’re a professional or just trying to keep a family together, the interconnected digital world is there to restore some order. It’s not even necessary to hire a personal assistant - today’s devices are kitted out with more than enough features to keep your life in line.

Despite all the challenges, it seems as if the implementation of tablets in schools is inevitable. Independent schools are already taking advantage of technology by making tablets available to their students and it’s believed that the two standards will soon be complementary in most schools.

MEET THE SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 MINI As marvellous as the S4 is, it’s quite a lot of phone to fit in your hand, which is why many are being won over by its mini-me version: the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is a scaled down variety of the Samsung Galaxy S4. The thin bezel and light weight is very impressive. Being smaller, the mini is also more affordable, pitting it against the Nokia Lumia 820, Sony Xperia SP and the HTC One Mini. The bright, vibrant screen is comparable in size to the iPhone 5, though actually offers 0.3 more inches of screen real estate. The camera is also impressive, with a 8MP sensor on the back, making this a perfect option for those looking for a powerhouse phone at a reasonable size. SONY XPERIA M
BLACKBERRY Q5
Sony has made some great entry-level Android phones, but it’s been a while since we saw a new model. Introducing the Sony Xperia M: a handset that injects new blood into the segment with both single and dual-SIM options.
If you’re looking for an effortless experience that helps you plan, explore, create and share on the go, you’ve found your perfect mobile match. The handset’s features and apps work seamlessly together, allowing you to communicate faster and with more ease.
Based on the trademark Xperia design, the Sony Xperia M scores high on both looks and build quality. The smartphone shares many of the design features that made its Xperia Z sibling such a hit, including the signature power key. It also has a hardware shutter key, removable battery and a microSD card slot - features that are becoming quite rare in the smartphone world. The Sony Xperia M hits the sweet spot for a modern budget Android smartphone and it has just the right amount of hardware that’ll keep it around for a long time.
The BlackBerry Time Shift mode enables you to capture the perfect pictures and videos, and by using BlackBerry Story Maker you can add music to your visuals and share your story with the world. NOKIA LUMIA 620
HUAWEI ASCEND P6
Electronics seem to be going through a colour phase, with most of today’s phones and tablets available in a rainbow of bright shades.
While it might not attract attention like the Samsungs and Apples of the world, the Chinese manufacturer has gone and outdone them at their own game with the Ascend P6.
The Lumia 620 takes things a step further by offering interchangeable fluorescent phone covers, meaning you can easily swap between covers. If you believe in that your smartphone is a fashion accessory, why not have a different colour every day of the week? The Lumia 610 is an affordable phone, aimed at those who want a basic smartphone for a reasonable price. It’s generally smooth and responsive, has a decent screen and a nice bundling of apps from Nokia and Windows. The storage is small, but it is expandable, making it a decent all-rounder.
SPECIFICATIONS
The phone’s razor-slim body makes it one of the thinnest smartphones on the market. Sure, there has been word of even thinner phones, but these were the kind of gadgets to give small-time Chinese makers their 15 minutes of fame rather than make a big splash globally. Huawei’s vision, on the other hand, goes well beyond the home market. What makes the Ascend so impressive is its powerful credentials. With a quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A9 processor, a 16-core GPU and 2 GB of RAM, the Ascend really offers a lot for a reasonable price. SPECIFICATIONS

APPLE’S NEW NEXT GEN MAC PRO After seven years, Apple finally decided to spruce things up. Launching later this year is the new cylindrical style New Mac Pro. The most impressive feature is that it’s expected to measure in at only 1/8th of the current Mac Pro’s size. New architecture and design are responsible for optimising the hardware’s performance, both inside and out. The distinctly different shape comes compliments of a new thermal core; an air duct running through the centre of the hardware itself, along with a fan situated at the top. A beautiful addition
