You walked 60 kilometres today. You consumed 1 800 calories. Your BMI is 22 and your is heart rate is 80bpm. These used to be the kind of measurements you got from a fitness professional, but today’s sophisticated fitnesstracking technology means that you can understand the most complex details about your level of fitness using only a handheld device. The key to the relationship between modern technology and fitness is awareness. With a tracking wristband, you know everything about your physical state: how long and how deeply you slept; how many calories you burned while vacuuming or taking the dog on a walk. Fitness in the digital age is with us every hour of the day. Understanding the level of physical activity in our daily lives helps us to change habits and squeeze fitness into everyday routines. Fitness gadgets are great motivational tools, giving you goals to work towards that are achievable through daily living. Tracking also gives a more accurate picture of your overall health. Sure, you might have gained a kilogram, but your BMI is still low and your resting heart rate is stellar.

Nowadays, these kinds of technologies are available in almost every fitness-related device on the market. Your scale, your treadmill, your watch or your phone are all becoming centres of health knowledge. Every device in your household becomes a potential fitness tool, from fitness games on your Wii to refrigerators that tell you your optimal diet. Fitness and technology are only going to continue to grow closer. According to a 2013 report from research firm IMS Research, shipments of fitness sensors, running and cycling computers and sport trackers will hit 56.2 million in four years. Already, most fitness technology is pretty futuristic: there are apps where you compete with runners in other parts of the world and apps that update all your friends on your current caloric intake; the possibilities are endless.

While the Air’s hardware is largely improved over the previous generation, the tablet’s battery life and processing power remain more than adequate. Hot on the heels of the power-packed HTC One comes the relatively lower powered, but also more pocket-friendly, HTC One mini. It’s a mini-variant, models that of late have become popular with handset makers. The display on the HTC One mini is one of the phone’s best features. The device definitely feels like a premium one and includes much of the full HTC Sense 5 experience. It also has premium hardware features like BoomSound, UltraPixel camera, and Zoe photos. Even though it’s smaller than a lot of the current high-end Android handsets, HTC hasn’t skimped on quality, which won’t leave anyone disappointed.

LIFESTYLE | the rise of the sports fan

THE RISE OF THE

SPORTS FAN It’s a few seconds before kick-off. You’re at the stadium, still clutching your ticket stub in excitement, having completed an arduous journey to experience this match live. You look around at your fellow spectators. Surely they are equally enthralled by the prospect, eager to not miss a second of the action right in front of them? WORDS HENRY JACK CLOETE ell, yes and no. A recent study by GMR Marketing in the USA revealed that up to 63% of sports fans check social networks while attending a match. This includes getting updates and, of course, interacting with social network connections about what’s happening on the field, circuit or court.

W

Purists may question the virtue of this fastgrowing tendency, but for sports fans who engage in social media interaction while watching a game, it’s simply a question of enhancing the experience. Unsurprisingly, the statistic shoots up to over 80% for sports fans

garding what game is on.

According to a similiar study by Catalyst on behalf of Sportsbusiness Journal (which, apart from US respondents, included soccer fans from the UK and Brazil), Facebook and Twitter are the networks sports fans are most likely to visit during a game, while Google + and Youtube use is growing equally as fast.

“It depends on the sport and where I’m watching. I’m a huge AC Milan fan, for instance, and the only one I know. So, if I want to talk trash regarding their games, I go to Twitter to connect with other Milanista. This I’ll do quite often.”

What are the main attraction points that enhance the game experience by using social media? Answers will differ, and for Leon-Ben (30) of Brackenfell, the allure even shifts re-

rugby to connect with friends regarding thoughts about the match.

enon, while only eight per cent indicated that they hate it.

“Sport isn’t merely tribal warfare, it can also get quite philosophical and academic, if you so choose. Basically, it’s a way to chat with someone as though they were sitting next to you on the couch. You get to bounce ideas and get feedback. Or sometimes you just enjoy a mutual joke.”

Marketers will have to be creative in this regard, though – sports fans engage in social media in this way to enhance the experience and gather information, and as soon as irrelevant advertisements detract from this, speculation follows that sports fans will flock to different outlets.

Of course, fans not only engage in this way during a game. In fact, the Catalyst study shows that respondents were as likely (64%) to engage in conversations on Twitter after the match as during, while 70% of this study’s respondents said they interact in this way on Facebook after the game, compared to 54% for during the game. Tellingly, these Facebook related numbers jumped up from 45% and 55% in the previous year’s study (2012). The accessibility to networks that mobile phone usage allows extends this tendency to a point that may hinder productivity in other areas – according to GMR Marketing’s study, up to 33% of respondents said they’d check social networks for sports updates during a work meeting, and nine per cent said they even do it during church. As is the case with any fast-growing tendency, this presents marketing agencies and advertisers with a golden opportunity. Seeing as it’s still relatively new, though, would exploitation in this regard detract from the experience and scare off fans?

Leon-Ben says his love for watching sports comes from “the on-field narrative, which can change at any moment”. Within this view, the rise of interactivity in the time before, during and after matches builds the narrative from a short story to a Tolkienesque novel, with new intrigues, plot points and analyses appearing for anyone willing to read. Will the formats and presentations continue to change? Absolutely. Will sports fans’ dedication to their teams be nurtured or diminished by the inevitable marketing growth surrounding this type of interaction? It’s all about the game plan…

SUPERSPORT APP Not to be outdone, Supersport has launched a free app to “take your experience of sport to a level never seen until now.” According to the Supersport website, the app’s main focus is on live sport. Live video streaming is the obvious attractive element in this

This is Leon-Ben’s main concern when asked about the future of the tendency: “Someone will probably find a way to combine it with advertising to attract revenue and ruin it for everyone.”

Interestingly, though, GMR Marketing’s research shows fans are generally not averse to finding sponsored tweets or sports personalities’ punting of products in their feeds. Up to 68% responded that they love, like or have no opinion about this phenom-

INNOVATION | mhealth technologies

PAGING DR IPHONE mHealth technologies are transforming the world of healthcare WORDS MICHELLE MARAIS It used to be that a patient visiting the doctor’s office might come away with a drug prescription, care instructions for how and when to take their meds, and a pamphlet explaining their condition or disease. Today, however, due to the growing presence of smartphones, tablets and other portable devices, patients are just as likely to walk out of d a medical their doctor’s office with instructions to download mobile application to their phone.

The mobile health (mHealth) industry is responsible for this shift, and it is contributing to a new delivery model focused on care that is patient-centered and value-based. When a patient downloads a medical application, for example, and uses that app to better manage a disease, it can lead to better health. This means fewer office visits, reduced care costs and a lower burden on the healthcare system.

Following are three more examples of how mHealth applications and devices are benefitting patients and improving care.

01 / They engage patients and motivate them to be more active participants in their care. Mobile health apps are an important and rapidly growing component of mHealth. In fact, there are currently more than 13 000 healthcare-related apps in the iTunes store – and many more on application platforms such as Amazon and Google Play. Most patients download apps of their own accord to monitor eating habits, count calories, and track fitness and training goals, but it doesn’t make the tools any lesser than ones recommended by physicians. They still accomplish a purpose, which is getting patients to care about their health. One app for tracking fitness goals and motivating patients to exercise is Endomondo.

018

SYNC MAGAZINE, ISSUE 3 | www.autopage.co.za

The app allows users to track things such as time, speed, calories burned and heart rate for a variety of activities – and best of all, users can share the data on Facebook and even compete against friends. The social media aspect is a driving force behind the use of products such as Endomondo, as it motivates users to keep on working out so that they can show off their accomplishments.

02 / They facilitate the tracking and management of chronic illnesses. Patients with chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes are one of the groups that stand to benefit most from mHealth technologies. By using disease management apps, patients can monitor vitals and symptoms, for example, to ensure that worsening conditions are caught early on. Apps geared towards children, on the other hand, can make disease management informative and fun. The iBGStar iPhone glucose meter is one example of a mobile health device and application designed to help patients monitor a chronic illness or disease. Plus, it’s the

03 / They contribute to patient understanding of their health. After a visit to the doctor, patients often come away with handouts and other paperwork explaining their condition and how they should proceed. These leaflets can be easily misplaced, leaving patients in the dark. If the patient has access to a mobile device, however, a physician can just as easily point them in the direction of a reference app or a mobile-friendly version of their organisation’s patient portal. The Our Journey is the hospital application used by the Phoenix Children’s Hospital and is a great example of a

first device of its kind to be cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. By using iBGStar, patients can monitor glucose, insulin and carbs anytime, no matter where they are. The app charts individualised glucose patterns over time and allows easy sharing of data so that patients and providers can make informed decisions together.

tool that helps parents keep track of what can be an overwhelming amount of information. The app guides parents through the care process their child will go through while at the hospital and even suggests questions they should ask their child’s doctor. It also has a resource tab with educational content and helpful links.

These are just a few examples of the mHealth resources that are available to patients. There are tens of thousands of mobile applications available, and the list is sure to keep on growing – and the tools improving – as the mHealth industry continues to evolve.

The LG G Flex revolutionises smartphone design The first smartphone featuring a vertical bend (yes, that’s right), the LG G Flex is has certainly raised a few eyebrows. The screen is a plastic, 6-inch OLED screen with a 720p resolution. But while the phone is curved in structure, it isn’t actually bendable. However, it does boast some pretty impressive specs. The LG G Flex is equipped with a 32GB internal memory, a built-in micro SD card slot, and it runs on Android 4.2.2. The phone’s rear has been coated with an elastic “self-healing” product, which allows the phone to heal itself of small scratches collected throughout the day.

The Apple iPad Air has been launched Apple have released its latest iPad – the iPad Air – weighing in at 28% less than the previous model (the iPad 3rd gen). But with almost a third of its weight shaved off and a impressive 9.7 inch display, Apple has still managed to make noticeable performance improvements. The iPad Air is equipped with Apple’s new 64bit A7 processor, a 10-hour battery life, iOS7, a highly anticipated 2048 x 1536 resolution display (retina display), up to twice the Wi-Fi performance thanks to two antennas and MIMO (multipleinput multiple-output) technology, and dual microphones. And it’s not bad looking either.

That call you never made We know, you never made that midnight call to Amsterdam’s red light district. Good thing you can cover yourself against fraudulent and unauthorised use of your phone for R1 000 up to R2 000.

Spilt milk and serious matters Cover for mechanical problems and water damage is included, and if you lost your job or, heaven forbid, your life, your insurance will cover your subscription fees for up to R3 600.

Privacy matters Should your private information fall into the wrong hands… your SIM card can and will be blocked and rendered useless. That’s if you have AutoSIM – the smart insurance option that’s almost not an option. For a very small monthly premium of R4,50 p.m. your lost, stolen or damaged SIM card is replaced right away.
