Making the Earth sustainable may just be the most daunting task of the 21st century – but thanks to our technological innovators, we might just be able to create a happily functioning world that doesn’t destroy the environment. WORDS JESSICA GLIDDON
When it comes to energy and our use of the environment, innovation is key. “Achieving sustainability is fundamentally a technical challenge,” Jeffery Immelt, CEO of GE, recently said. With carbon dioxide at record levels in the atmosphere, it’s more crucial than ever that we find efficient, convenient and smart ways to go green – and technology may be the key. Sustainable energy is perhaps the key component, with innovations in fields such as solar or wind power, carbon capture and hydrogen power offering appealing options for future alternative energy sources. New developments are constantly taking place in the field of sustainable energy: at the Abu Dhabi World Future Energy Summit, amazing gadgets were unveiled such as the AREVA Near Fresnel Reflector, which uses rows of flat and curved mirrors to track sunlight and concentrate it into a receiver. in Abu Dhabi recently produced a solar cell using printed electronics. These are amazing achievements, but technical innovations are also appearing in much simpler and often more effective guises. For example, one of the most inventive ways technology is being used for sustainability is through mobile phones. Africa now boasts 650 million mobile phone users. This means people living in rural areas have increased access to resources, so that assistance can be brought swiftly to areas that might otherwise be held back by a lack of infrastructure. Solar technology has been particularly important for Africa, where it has helped with basic tasks like pumping water or keeping health facilities running. There are projects such as Power Up Gambia, which uses solar power to provide power to Gambian health

care facilities, or Energy for Opportunity, which has a similar purpose for schools and clinics in Western Africa. Neither of these would have been possible with conventional energy. Perhaps the most important developments have come from the internet, which allows information to travel rapidly, spreading education about
“Achieving sustainability is fundamentally a technical challenge” how people can live in more sustainable ways, and holding companies accountable that don’t. With R33.8 billion set aside by the South African Government for 17 clean energy projects in South Africa in the coming years, it’s obvious that sustainable initiatives are important to us all – and technology makes it that much easier for us to do our bit.

SERVER SMART With Gmail, Google Plus, Google Maps, Google News, Google Books and much more, Google handles an immense amount of data on a daily basis. This means it needs huge servers to keep it all going, which require a massive amount of energy. In keeping with its reputation as innovators, Google has worked hard to ensure that its impact on the environment is minimal despite massive energy needs, having managed to cut down its data usage to 50% of that of other data centres. Google’s customised systems evaluate every bit of electricity use its servers generate, including pumps, cooling towers, humidifiers, supporting power and office power usage.
There are several ways the company has accomplished its lean output, such as using outside air for cooling, extensively customising servers to maximise their efficiency, and monitoring every bit of the server’s performance. Google even recycles everything that leaves its data centres. The company’s cloud servers are also a valuable part of energy efficiency. Lawrence
“CLOUD COULD REDUCE THE ENERGY USED BY INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY BY UP TO 87%”
Berkeley National Laboratory recently published research indicating that moving all office workers in the United States to the cloud could reduce the energy used by information technology by up to 87%. In this way, Google even makes the businesses that use its services more efficient, with products such as Google Apps and Gmail drastically decreasing environmental impact.

SMALL CHANGES,
BIG IMPACT The first step to a more eco-friendly you is finding sustainable solutions for day-to-day activities. WORDS MICHELLE MARAIS
At first light If you can’t bring yourself to give up the warm glow of incandescent light bulbs, well, you have to. The savings in energy are enormous. Trading just one incandescent for a compact fluorescent (CFL) prevents greenhouse gas emissions equal to that of about 800 000 cars.
Raise your glass Teach yourself to wash out your glass jars in order to make them recycle-ready. When you’re doing the dishes, pour some of the hot, soapy water into your lightly scraped jar, put the lid back on, and give it a couple of good shakes. For mayonnaise, that should do the trick. For peanut butter or jam, let it soak – by the time you’ve finished the dishes, you should be able to clean it easily.

Test the water
Bag it!
Clear the air
Bottled water is very convenient but by giving it up you will save an enormous amount of waste. Install a filter under your sink at home, and lobby to have one installed at work. Buy a wide-mouth stainless-steel or BPA-free plastic bottle with a removable lid; wide-mouth bottles are easier to clean. At the airport, carry it empty past security and then fill it from a water fountain.
Remembering your market tote every time you hit the shops is hard. Especially when you’ve had a very busy day. Try folding a couple of bags into small packets that fit in your purse or pocket and make sure to always have a bag in your vehicle. The main thing is to have something you feel good carrying. Make sure you purchase a tote that you feel comfortable carrying around. As soon as you’ve gotten into the habit, you won’t think twice about it.
Air-conditioning uses a lot of energy. You can lower the temperature indoors dramatically by switching to CFL lightbulbs. Ceiling fans, double glazing and crossventilation will all help. If you are building or renovating, consider alternative ways to cool your house.
You can lower the temperature indoors dramatically by switching to CFL lightbulbs. Come clean
Throw in the towel
Cup runneth over
If you have used the same cleaning products all your life, now’s the time to change. For countertops, cutting boards and bathroom surfaces, scrubbing with a good cleaner is always the first step to remove visible soil. Then spray with hydrogen peroxide, a 3% solution, followed by plain vinegar. It’s inexpensive and is all you need to kill household germs.
Everyone loves a handy paper towel. However, the truth is that their manufacturing process has a huge impact on the Earth. If you can’t afford eco-friendly paper towels, buy just one roll to keep on hand for really disgusting cleanups, and use it like gold. Cut up old cloth towels, or buy a large stack of bar towels from a restaurant supply store. The idea is to have towels that aren’t attractive, so you won’t hesitate to use them. Use hydrogen peroxide-based bleach if needed and wash them only when you have a full load.
Billions of paper cups are used each year. They’re usually coated, so they can’t be recycled or composted. With a variety of beautifully designed thermos flasks the transition should be effortless. If you work in an office, get a coffeepot and have everyone bring a mug. If you travel by car, then you have no excuse for not carrying a commuter mug.
These easy and effective ways can truly make a difference. Remember that small changes can make a big impact when it comes to sustainability.

SAMSUNG ATIV The ATIV Book 9 Plus is the first truly flagshiplevel Ultrabook Samsung has released since Windows 8 came out. Like its predecessor, the ATIV Book 9 Plus is impressively thin, with an understated design and sturdy build quality. And thanks to a sharp 3 200 x 1 800, low-glare screen and a current Haswell processor, it rises to the top in terms of both display quality and performance. Even the battery life, which isn’t technically best in class, is still very good. Samsung already had the best Ultrabook on the market, and it’s managed to stay on top in 2013, even as its competitors have improved battery life and performance on their own models. While there are some other excellent, similarly priced options out there, the ATIV Book 9 Plus is a fantastic option in its own right.

LENOVO YOGA 10 After forging a formidable reputation for itself in the global market with conventional notebooks and tablets, Lenovo has taken a fresh leap into Android tablet segment and has launched the Yoga Tablet 10. As far as looks go, Lenovo’s Yoga Tablet 10 is a complete departure from the tablet norm and features a cylindrical end design at one end, which is reminiscent of a folded magazine. Much like other Yoga devices in Lenovo’s line-up, the Yoga Tablet 10 features multimode design and can be used in different modes. The Chinese giant has been touting the Yoga tablets as the company’s biggest launch of 2014 and it is said that the cylindrical design is more user-friendly when compared to other conventional tablets.

tips to green your cellphone 020
SYNC MAGAZINE, ISSUE 4 | www.autopage.co.za
Recycle your old phone If your old phone is still in good condition, don’t dispose of it. Give it to a family member or a friend who needs a mobile. A large number of major retailers and charities participate in recycling programmes. By taking part in these programmes, you are helping the disadvantaged and saving on waste. Win-win situation. Every step you take to make your phone more eco-friendly can have a significant effect on your carbon footprint and can inspire others to do their part in going green.
Use a solarpowered charger These chargers are becoming increasingly popular as people are thinking about energy conservation. Solar-powered chargers work equally as well as electric phone chargers and you won’t notice any difference in your cellphone’s functionality.
Power off your phone when not in use Teach yourself to turn off your cellphone when you are at the movies, on a flight or out for dinner. Turning off your phone conserves your battery life. Not only will this help you minimise your carbon footprint, but others will appreciate your full attention.
Download green apps If you have trouble keeping track of things, download apps that will automatically reduce your carbon footprint by turning off your GPS function and Wi-Fi when you are not using them.
Choose a good phone and stick with it Upgrading your phone constantly is a huge temptation but it does have a very big impact on the environment. If you are in the market for a new smartphone, consider one with great functionality and a beautiful design that you could keep for a number of years. With new phones emerging on the market seemingly every day, it is easy to be tempted. Holding onto your phone longer means less waste later.

Qualcomm’s Toq smart watch has made its debut… The recently launched Toq smart watch features a Mirasol Display (originally demonstrated in e-ink-style e-readers), a first in the smart watch market. This technology allows the watch to stay on for lengthy periods of time without draining battery life, and supports an impressive screen refresh rate. It also features a backlight and a 1.55-inch, 288x192-pixelresolution display, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 450mAh battery. The watch is able to screen incoming calls, show text messages, connect to the internet, play music, store your calendar and a fair amount more. Apps do exist on the Toq, but it’s also designed for use (specifically) with Android devices. And it’ll set you back about R 3 800.

Tonino Lamborghini’s smartphone is expected to be a key player in pioneering a new tech niche; techno-luxury. The phone operates using Android 4.2 (Jelly bean), and features hardware that struggles to compete with regular smartphones such as the iPhone 5s and Samsung Galaxy S4. The specifications include a 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, a built-in Yamaha amplifier and a 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front-facing camera. All this for the steal of roughly R 42 300. It will be available in Italy, the UK and the USA from early 2014 onwards.
Samsung unveils the Galaxy Grand 2… Samsung has unveiled its latest large screen smartphone, the Galaxy Grand 2. The 5.25-inch screen offers improved HD viewing in comparison to the smartphones 5-inch predecessor, and is being punted as ideal for media consumption and gaming. It features some impressive specs, including dual SIM capabilities and expandable storage capacity of up to 64GB, and runs Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean). Pricing has not yet been confirmed, but rumour has it the phone will be available in classic black or white as well as pink.
Microsoft Xbox One arrives eight years to the day after the Xbox 360… The Xbox One has finally arrived, and apparently it was worth the wait. According to Microsoft, the company is seeing an unprecedented demand for the console, and recording-breaking sales. The console integrates live TV within its range of functions, and is able to control the users satellite cable box, TV and receiver. Games released for the Xbox One also offer improved graphics. To make this console your own, you can expect to fork out roughly R 5 400.
The Klipsch Gig demands you listen up... This ultra-portable wireless speaker has been making waves in the sound arena. Compact enough to slip into a briefcase or backpack, it’s surprising that what this gadget lacks in size it makes up for in bass. It features 1-inch full-range drivers, two 2-inch passive radiators and DSP equalisation, a 3.5mm input jack, microphone and speakerphone options and 20 watts of power. Battery life lasts up to 12 hours and the speaker will retail for about R 2 200.
Google brings the voice activated “OK Google” command to Chrome… Although Google voice search isn’t a new concept (having been available on Chrome via desktop browsing for a while already), it certainly is new to mobile. Google have recently released a hotword extension for Chrome, which prompts the Chrome browser into listening mode when the user chimes “OK Google”. This allows mobile users to browse the web hands-free. Currently this extension is limited to the English, and is only functional in the US version of Google.com.
